Mandatory market response time:

Treasurys are up a little bit, with the 10-year yielding 2.09%. That could also be due to a strong 2-year Treasury note, but the talk is that it’s at least partly because of the quake.

The stock market dipped just a teensy bit, but the Dow’s still up 175 points. The quake apparently shaved a little bit off the market.

They’ve evacuated the Pentagon and the Capitol Building in DC, so it is kind of a big deal.

Z S, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

Outside > Sturdy table > doorframe or some other structurally sound piece of the building.

C-L, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

there was like a 10-15 second pre-earthquake before the biggest part hit, and from the sounds of the flushing and minor shaking on the floors above and below me, i thought there was a major plumbing problem. my thoughts for the first half of the earthquake were basically "is the water going to shoot up the toilet and into my butt"

Z S, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

the doorframe to a bathroom stall prob doesn't count tbh

markers, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 August 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

my mom was 30 miles east of the epicenter... relatively mellow so I think the effects must have been confined to the fault line.

We just had a 5.9 earthquake, centered about 30 miles east of here, supposedly felt from Charlotte NC to Quebec. I'm at work, and we evacuated the building, then had to wait (even after being told it was safe to go back) until the fire dept came to shut off the alarm, because it is so piercingly loud that you can't function when it is sounding.

The only other earthquake I've been in was during the 2003-2005 time I was in an **** office in a different building while they were building the addition to our building, and that was like a huge sonic boom, no shaking. This one was a rising and then gradually falling noise and vibration over about 35 seconds. There have been guys working in the building today using a jackhammer drill to put in electrical conduit, and everyone's first reaction was, "What are those guys doing!"

So far, no reports of any damage - the photos on top of the credenza above my desk didn't even fall over, something they regularly do when I bump my desk (and not even very hard, at that).

When I got home to Annapolis after 4 hours of walking around dc, waiting for a commuter bus, then actually being on a bus, I got an email from the interim head of our department stating that everybody who left early would have to use Personal Leave to account for our absence on our timesheets.

I don't have much of a problem with this, except she wasn't in the designated meeting area for at least half an hour after the quake. We did a fire drill a couple months ago so I know she knows where it is. Also, the woman in charge of disaster coordination for the office toddled off with a friend for lunch after waiting outside with us for about 10 minutes.

It sounds like a perfect earthquake for those who would appreciate such events - strong enough to feel unsettling, and offer a break from the mundane day, but not enough to hurt people...except this who autodefenestrated for some reason.

Yeah, basically my attitude (after the initial shock of earthquakes as a wee child growing up in California) is that earthquakes are fun and awesome unless someone dies. Then they're sad. Nobody seems to have died, so basically we got a fun ride, and the expat Californians got to feel a lil superior cause we knew what to do, and everyone learned of the hilarious tendency of news to be like "We're gonna stay with this story for hours: to repeat, the earth moved. We do not know if it will happen again." I was always happy to see Dr. Lucy Jones from CalTech on my TV back in the day.

I got kind of annoyed that everything got shut down, though. I had stuff I wanted to do at school today! Rrrgh

I used to be jealous of my brother b/c he lived in LA in grade school and he got to experience earthquakes, which my dad said were special treats for him.

I get Jenny's mom hating it. I mean, people (except people who live places like LA or Mexico City) really do count on the ground to hold still, sort of by virtue the ground.

From Mt. Airy, NC (aka Mayberry): Did anyone else feel the aftershock around 8 o'clock this evening? Just looked at the usgs maps and it shows a 4.2 hit around that time. I felt the house shake...eeeeeeeeeek!!!

weakness for Cinnabon; rampant heterosexuality (Je55e), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 02:23 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't notice the aftershock here in Arlington. 4.2 vs 5.8 is almost 2 orders of magnitude different on a logarithmic scale though, right? So 5.8 is something like 50 times stronger than 4.2?

The UGH list:

Californians being dicks about 5.8 earthquakes in places that never get them. As if the reaction is about the earthquake itself and not the fact that it is ridiculously novel.

Deep Southerners being dicks about Northern heat waves. Yes, you live in the steaming armpit of our nation. Good job.

Cascading dickishness from north to south re the more southerly people's reactions of alarm and paralysis at snowfall and cold that is routine to the more northerly ones. Surprise, surprise: places that don't get much snow are less prepared to manage larger amounts of snow. Superiority of humanity increases as latitude decreases.

re: the Californians = dicks thing....i get it in some way, because it is rather novel on the east coast (i grew up in philly), but let's be honest— it wasn't that big a quake, and the amount of insanely shrill news coverage about it made me want to shoot all televisions and radios. also, some other major things happened in the news yesterday (LIBYA? HELLOOO) and all any news outlet could talk about was this teensy fucking earthquake that is a mere blip on peoples consciousnesses if they live on the west coast.

in short: i get why people were so excited and/or freaked out, but it didn't merit the amount of excitement/freakedoutness that it got. that is all.

(and btw, i was en route to baltimore, didn't feel a fucking thing. i never have felt one in my entire time in california, and we've had a few of this magnitude).

saw this sentiment pop up on my news feed a few times yesterday, hah

well, come autumn/winter you can laugh at us again for shutting down completely when it rains for like an hour

dickquake in the blogosphere!

The Golden Vagina Shines for You and Your Lucky Day (Latham Green), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

The news is going to be shrill about BS and people are going to be focused on spectacles of immediate interest to them and disregard matters of less gravity. It's not an excuse and it's not good, but then again, were the dickish Californians in question saying "How can these East-Coasters carry on about a trivial quake when big shit's going down in Libya and Syria!"?

weakness for Cinnabon; rampant heterosexuality (Je55e), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

Or were they saying "LOL our toddlers can apply eye shadow standing on their heads during a friggin' 5.8!"?

Hahaha. I don't even associate it directly with you anymore, but you really left some wounds that will never heal. Apparently.

Californians being dicks about 5.8 earthquakes in places that never get them.

god for real, but it's not just the novelty, it's the fact that people can live in not-california their entire lives (wtf, crazy i know) and then an earthquake happens. a lot of those people are going to spend the duration of the quake honestly scared for their lives and seriously freaked out afterwards.

when i was getting home from work yesterday about an hour afterwards, there was an older lady wandering aimlessly down the street with a blank look in her eyes, and she had her hands on her neck/cheeks area like she was holding herself. she told me "earthquake! they said 5.8!" and that she was too scared to go back into her house. i leave my house an hour later, and i see her AGAIN, walking down the same road in the same exact position.

today i talked to another older lady at a reception desk, i asked her how her day was going and she said she was feeling awful because she didn't get any sleep last night; she was up all night thinking about the earthquake. she was at least in her 70s and she had never experienced one before.

it's easy to be terrified bc even if it's obviously an earthquake, they're so unexpected here that your first eight thoughts might be about things that are a lot worse than earthquakes, like maybe aliens are lifting the building from the ground, or the USSR just dropped a bomb somewhere 30 miles away, or there's a giant shaking the building

so stop being a dick, california

dj roombahton (zachlyon), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

i never have felt one in my entire time in california, and we've had a few of this magnitude.

does this say something about a 5.8 or about your distance from the epicenter & ability to be aware of the world around you so to speak

in true tragedy news, i tried to get my cat to ride on my dog's back like he was a horse and she was a cowboy and they both just freaked out like idiots

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

yeah my first thought was "dc doesn't get earthquakes--what just blew up and how fast do i have to run?"

*steens furiHOOSly* (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

I am a californian and a dick but I don't see anything wrong with east coast people saying lolwtf, if there were a blizzard in LA it would be on the news too

I didn't feel it tho

iatee, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

being confused/scared/excited right after the quake is reasonable... still being rattled hours and hours later, wandering the streets, muttering to yourself after you know what happened is pretty pfft-worthy tho.

Kerm, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

I'm currently defecating in my boxer briefs due to this earthquake, a whole day later.
