I gotta be honest, I used to hate Collins with a firey passion, but I've come round on at least some of his stuff now - Easy Lover is one, couple of the early singles are pretty crackin as well.

Still prefer Genesis by a mile tho.

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/police-subdue-rogue-cabbie-after-crash-20110902-1jpmf.html

A taxi driver had to be subdued with capsicum spray after he crashed his car into six vehicles in Melbourne's west this afternoon.

The cabbie smashed into the cars on Pascoe Vale Road in Roxburgh Park shortly after noon, police said.

The 42-year-old Werribee man collided with the cars near Shanklin Boulevard.

The man was taken to Northern Hospital for treatment after being sprayed with capsicum spray by officers.

It has been reported the bomb squad were called in to investigate the boot of the man's car.

Ed if anybody starts talking to you in German just nod and say 'genau' at appropriate intervals. It's possible to to have conversations for hours this way.

Circlework de Soleil (S-), Tuesday, 20 September 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

I have had a number of successful conversations auf Deutsch already:

1. Explaining that I don't know where a certain street is
2. Telling someone on the U-Bahn that the station they want was the next stop (which I knew because it was my stop)
3. Buying a sandwich and a hot chocolate

I have been asked for directions about ten times today. People, I'm the dumb tourist, not you.

NB I have not mentioned unsuccessful ones because I'm trying to make out I am better than I am. "Genau" and "Ja, naturlich" seem to be the most common words/phrases I've overheard in conversation. I have peppered my first day with a few "entschuldigung"s as well.

Entomologists Dr Darryl Gwynne from University of Toronto Mississauga and Dr David Rentz, an adjunct professor at James Cook University in Queensland, received the biology prize for their 1983 study that showed male jewel beetles copulate with empty, discarded beer stubbies. Their study was published in the Australian Journal of Entomology.

Confused by the colour and reflection of the small bumps on the bottom of a glass beer bottle, male Julodimorpha bakervelli beetles mounted the bottles and attempted to copulate with them.

Opera House spam subheads "WAY TO BLUE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE" with "FEATURING GREEN GARTSIDE" in a larger font than the actual event, and the following blurb:

Mercury Prize nominee and front-man for British post-punk turned pop chart-topper’s, Scritti Polliti, Green Gartside performs as part of Way to Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake. Miles Davis was a considerable fan, covering one of Scritti Polliti's three top 20 hits.

‘joint-holder with Brian Eno of the title Cleverest Man in Pop’ The Guardian

That's the blurb, for the NICK DRAKE TRIBUTE CONCERT Featuring Danny Thompson, Vashti Bunyan, Green Gartside, Lisa Hannigan, Scott Matthews, Krystle Warren, Robyn Hitchcock, Shane Nicholson and Luluc, in full. Any bets on whether this means "people dig Green! Someone will want to put a solo show on at the Basement!" or "youse are fucked, no Treacherous Three, anyone who wants to hear him has to come to this snoozefest"?

Shit yes they did! "Woodbeez", "Absolute" and "Perfect Way" were all huge, played-on-Countdown level hits in the 80s.

But that was thr 80s. They're long forgotten now, so bigging him up (over say, Vashti or Robyn Hitchcock) seems bizarre.

I took Mimi to the vet for a check up as she seems to want to drink all the time and she has a kidney disease and has to go on a special diet and medication she's 15 which is about 85 for a cat.She is still very sprightly as the other day I was out the front watering and she attacked a little dog and some passers-by. They ended up in the gutter and she attacked them about 5 times.Calling her was useless and I had to pickup her up and she was furious. Apparently they go to the same vet as she scratched the dogs face. Very embarrassing.

I think at one point I got off the couch, went to hunch down next to someone else to talk to them, and tipped over sideways drunkenky onto the floor.

Dare I ask, was this set off by Painfully Annoying Interactions w/Rellos?

No! Quite the opposite. In amongst the rabble of bogans there's a whole family in Sydney that everyone had written off as "snobs". Turns out the "snobs" are the only academic achievers in the family, which is why the bogans have been calling them "snobs" . My 70yo aunt (who I've met maybe six times ever) made a bee-line for us, told me that I am like her children (one of them is a leading ec0l0gist and director of important things at harvard ffs) and nothing like the bogans, and begged us to leave Aus and ~do things~. We have been talking about exactly that for a while anyway, so that basically cemented the deal.

~~mysteries of the orient~~ = 1. see above 2. we are bored as hell with #firstworld atm 3. I has been learning Chinese for a goodly while

I have teh shingles :(

triple word score rite

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:04 (fourteen years ago)

I couldn't go straight to doctor as I first noticed an itch while I was out and about, but it went away and I thought nothing of it. Then the rash appeared while I was in Poland. I did get to a doctor which was in and of itself quite a traumatising experience but by then I was already in agony with burning and itching. It does appear to be weakening, but I'm going to an Australian doctor now as I have an ASSORTMENT of other complaints :(

BBC Cornwall said that Cubs are one of the most exciting young bands in Cornwall right now. They were formed just over a year ago and have already produced some great gigs and music. High profile gigs around Cornwall and in London have included opening the Penzance Powerboat P1 back in May 2010 and playing as supporting band to Foals DJ set at the Brixton Jam, London.

Guitarist Eliot Allison and keyboard player Louis King started writing jazz infused tracks and then developed their sound when drummer Jamie Hall joined them. At this point the upbeat indie sounds became their hallmark. When Toby Jones, the bassist and vocalist, joined them, Cubs were formed.

‘We’re heavily influenced by bands such as The Maccabees and Bombay Bicycle Club. In the last year our influences have been all over the place and the music we write varies on what we are listening to at the time. However bands such as: Foals, Local Natives and even Wild Beasts creep into our inspiration.’

CUBS - Indie band

‘We’re heavily influenced by bands such as The Maccabees and Bombay Bicycle Club

melb equivalent: "we're heavily influenced by the Drones and Wagons"

ffs sorrow (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

I just read all that as "we're influenced by Pointless Comparison Of Bands NoOne has Heard Of So this Sentence is a Waste of Time"

Trayce, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

that would entirely depend on its audience now wouldn't it

those bands are relatively well known in their hometown

I have been known to frequent the triv night at the Mitre from time to time while in the Melbourne. Too many yuppie cunts but I beat them so who cares.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Thursday, 3 November 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

datelad has come over my house cos his housemates ex gf is a psychotic who keeps coming over screaming, calling police, threatening suicide in front of them all. He's trying desperately to finish his last grad essays due tomorrow, so he's come over here and I've put him in my bedroom to work. This is weirdass.

Trayce, Thursday, 3 November 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

Like, Ive known mentally ill ppl in my past but this is pretty intense, apparently this girl has come over multiple times, screamed bloody murder at everyone, tried to cut herself up, when the cops get called she accuses her ex of raping/beating her, they've had to apply for a restraining order and everything just this week. Wow.

Trayce, Thursday, 3 November 2011 10:50 (fourteen years ago)

7 day hangover

fungal guys (electricsound), Friday, 4 November 2011 03:14 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, yes that'd do it.

Friend of mine has been trying to catch up with me for months for a bevvy, and I was like "hows afer work today" even tho frankly I'm fackin exhausted, so he was all "ok come over my house, I have coffee and gin" ... yeah I dont feel like sitting in your tiny, server-crammed apartment in lonsdale st, thanks all the same dude. Its sunny out there!

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 03:15 (fourteen years ago)

xpoh - dry heaves all week dont sound like a good sign, mate! you seen a doc?

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)

no the dry heaves only come with the smell of beer

fungal guys (electricsound), Friday, 4 November 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)

fair enough! Certainly bin there. I always feel bad when Ive smoked up the house like a bastard but then ive so overdone it, the smell of a cigarette makes me want to rip my own head off, so I'm rude to nick and wont let him smoke haha. I'm such a hypocrite.

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

I also rly shouldnt smoke inside the house so much but ... eh. too late now.

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

I didnt use to smoke inside, Rob wouldnt allow it, so of course as soon as he left I did didnt I. I v regulary get the carpet steam cleaned and wash all the walls and windows, but ugh I'm probably gonna have to replace the living room curtain, it must smell like a tramp.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 4 November 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

I'd love to cut back to 4 days a week (rather than, say, get a payrise). Doubt I could ever convince the boss of it tho. In fact I think I'm about to get a payrise and be renamed manager, so I'll probably have to work even harder, meh.

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

omg that's awesome/horrible (circle the appropriate word)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 4 November 2011 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

Haha its kind of both! I've been agitating for this for like, 2 years now, so its well overdue.

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

(I run my dept on my own, so really, why am I not "manager"?)

Trayce, Friday, 4 November 2011 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

you should absolutely go for that

Oh hai Melbourne, why do you completely stop working properly when it rains even slightly. 55 minutes from Southern Cross to Elsternwick, wtf even IS that.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 00:28 (thirteen years ago)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

water falling from sky is an improbable event that only occurs 63.5% of the time, factoring such an event into transport planning would be expensive and unjustifiable

happily though, Apparat are now playing a sideshow in Sydney for half the price in a room half the size so kiss my face, Melbum

Trayce, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

I think I would actively love being down here if I had paid hotels all the time :( The things I dislike about Melbourne are, primarily, Tullamarine Airport and Southern Cross, and I have to see a LOT of those. Which sucks.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

tullamarine gets worse when you're a local and have to find a way of being there that doesn't cost $60/hr

sic I totally imagined you saying that Alan Partridge style

aaaaaahahaha

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

I'd love Melbourne more (and I already do love it tbf) if it would stop being so cliched and fcking RAINING so much, this is getting stupid. I am homesick for Canberra's dry sunny weather, which is a bit mental of me.

Trayce, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

lol, that's like saying you would enjoy antarctica if not for all the snow

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

I thought it didn't actually snow that often down there and it was just oppressively dry-cold. Or something.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

Okay maybe not. Sounds like a good place to go to die or something.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

Well we did have a run of some years with a lot less rain, hey. Not that that was good either with the lack of water and bushfires, but I find oppressive drizzle/humidity depressing.

Trayce, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:37 (thirteen years ago)

Well we did have a run of some years with a lot less rain

yeah there was ~10 yrs of stuff-all, served to help us forget how glum this place can be

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

I actually think we should ship people who complain TOO MUCH about the weather to Antarctica. The expense to the taxpayer would be easily offset by the decrease in unpleasantly whiney conversation.

unskinny blap (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

whoaaaaaaaa im trippin my nut sack into a frenzy of dik play

dogs in hot cardies (electricsound), Friday, 11 November 2011 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

I supped a cuppa tea at 11:11, just as I always like to do on my birthtime (which is also 11:11)

Lollll in other news, the fanstastic organisation of Harvest festival has sent an email out - now, at 11.30 - saying "oh btw the last shuttle bus is at 11.05pm so if you're staying for the whole flaming lips set you should prob get home by car. Or this other bus service. Which btw you need to book before 12 today".

The last 2 shuttle busses are before, and just on, the end of the last band's set. There's no other way to get back to werrribee on PT and its an hour's walk or more.

GOOD WORK GUYS.

Trayce, Friday, 11 November 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

are you attending said festival

dogs in hot cardies (electricsound), Friday, 11 November 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

Had psyched myself out of going as I'd misplaced my ticket. Found the ticket last night (after a perth friend said "i bet its in a book"... he was right, wtf!), and now Im not sure i want to bother. ONly rly 3 bands I wanna see (merco rev, pvt and mogwai but ive seen pvt and mogwai before). Do not give two tosses about portishead or flips tbh.

Trayce, Friday, 11 November 2011 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

Flips are always a massive good time live

I imagine P-head will be stunning if you ever liked them

Family Stone will either be great fun or a train wreck you wish you'd seen

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are dope

Death In Vegas are obv never going to tour again and that new album has had good word on the ILX and ILX0rs' other outputs

If yr really not bothering with Flips then you get to see Holy Fuck

and the DJ and comedy and vaudeville stages all look good up here - if they're similar there then you get lovely small fun places to hang and things to see if you rly aren't seeing any of the intl bands, so

٩(̾●̮̮̃̾•̃̾)۶ (sic), Friday, 11 November 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah must admit the sideshow alley bits look kinda dece. I'm gonna see how I feel tomorrow I guess. Def wanna see PVT again, theyre tops live, as are Mogwai (though I suspect a mid afternoon outdoor set could dilute their impact somewhat)

My main bugbear is the "no pro photography equipment" ban, fuckers. I wanted to take my SLR with me.

k1t, seems you guys got a better end of the Harvest deal than we did, if AJ's tweets are anything to go on (and who knows, the guy seems kind of incompetent to me - blaming the f&b staff he would have hired!) - after how Melb went down apparently they worked overnight to shove more loos and staff @Syd. So we were the guinea pigs :(

Still, it was a nice day and a great venue, I just wish I'd not been stupid and stayed in that beer queue before Mogwai, it ruined my mood (and crippled my feet)

Trayce, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

I would consider it again next year *IF* they'd relent and allow a small BYO drink/food allowance. Cant gougue the punters that way tho eh can ya. I mean $8 for a cup of cider and $12 for an even smaller cup of wine gtfo.

Trayce, Monday, 14 November 2011 02:58 (thirteen years ago)
