effing hipsters

Once Were Moderators (DG), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't used to think so but then I realized that hipsters aren't even the dominant life form in the early-20s children of the upper-middle-class demographic, and I'm a lot closer to a hipster than whatever the kind of person who has muscles and wears athletic shorts and plays volleyball is.

I ticked "yes", but I'm 31 next month, live in a UK commuter suburb and ride a mountain bike. I work in media advertising, but it's telesales more or less. I have a "vintage" TV (well, it's one of those ancient widescreens) but I use it to watch TV and not as a coffeetable. My clothes are mainly from Uniqlo and H&M. Basically I'm the worst hipster ever.

Yeah, I'd consider myself to have been a hipster in like 2003 or 2004, but I had nowhere near the depth of hip cultural knowledge. I feel comfortable saying that I became "no longer a hipster" when I got fat after quitting smoking.

true story: the word "hipster" means "panties" in Sweden and when you go there if you see a lingerie ad it has the word "hipster" right underneath the panties there

I'm skinny, wear thrift-store clothes only, collect vinyls, play a theremin, been called a hipster many times. Since 19 I've been playing music with people that are famous indie rockers, I'm constantly sharing living space with other artists, and I've been in the local free alt weekly probably a dozen times. I edit video and websites and love experimental film like you wouldn't believe.

Truth is, personally I think I'm too much of a nerd to really be a well-functioning social hipster. More often than not out at a party or show I would rather be sitting at home watching MST3K or Star Trek.

hipster panties are a thing in america too!

yes -- if you purchase your lady underpants in a cardboard 3-pack at target or walmart, you'll find that there are four different styles available: boyshort, brief, hipster, and bikini. also, while two of them will be a decent solid color like black or white or blue, one will invariably be crazily striped or festooned with paisley, leading you to stare morosely at the package and think "i'm a grown-ass woman, why can't my underwear purchase reflect this."

i don't know what actual hipsters wear for underwear, though.

Who carrrrrres. Most recognized hipsterdome is just aspirational BS for social climbers, people stuck in highschool (cliques based on external signifiers! is life still that scary for you???), and general nitwits. That is, if they're buying into it ... first sign: you take on qualities recognizable as "hipster". Why? Cuz I wanna be seen as a hipster! Or at a higher station in life! I think that's pretty silly when you hit a certain age (I dunno, 25?).

Most people are pretty cool though if they're just pursuing their own oddball interests. But, by and far, people are generally shallow along all cross-sections of life, so the whole "hipster question"(??!?) seems pointless. It's all the same crap no matter the name you give to it.

there's a certain obnoxious privileged tourism that is encapsulated by "hipster" that is certainly scornworthy, and I feel like this scorn could culminate in real social pressure to raise taxes on the wealthy, so it's a worthwhile thing.

dayo, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, maybe there are some interesting things to pull out of it. Say, hipsters representing the rising importance of consumerism and information/media know-how in society. I'm sure that's been covered a million times over, though. Frankly ever since I was a kid I thought it was stupid to place so much importance on buying stuff, and "being something" through objects you own (totally unnecessary), and I don't know, that seems pretty important in this whole hipster thing. Hipster = fulfillment of the 21st century mandate to buy, be what you buy, and to know (but not understand).

Lamp, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

spectrum sounds kinda socially aspie-ish but there is something abt Lamp's perspective here that strikes me as being a lil superior & ~builds wall~ about hipsterism. like, at some level its all imitatiev / masks ppl are putting on, & some do it more convincingly, and closer to a like 'actual art scene', and some do it in small midwestern cities & still aspire to be on the cutting edge or w/e, and when it comes down to it there's not much diff. i guess Lamp is arguing there's a social element to it that supersedes the signifiers. i think thats generally otm.

yeah this isn't really right tho, I mean by what metric is "understanding" measured. the consumer goods angle has definitely amped things up a bit, but y'know there were people who flaunted their personal style in previous, pre-industrial capitalist commodity eras as well

oh i mean im fine w/ firm boundaries for the term, i just think the "they only exist in SF/NY/LA" and similar is drawing a p tight line ... they exist on college campuses across the country for ex (& the fact that its colleges does mean a pretty strong class line obv) & I think that the boundaries are a bit looser in terms of geographics & origin ... its an aspirational thing for most ppl, and a socially adept kid from suburban st louis can easily end up a completely culturally fluent hipster in chicago but arent they kind of there already before they move here? i mean its an aesthetic sensitivity as much as it is a social thing ... idk im losing track of my thought process here trying to care about this lol

D-40, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

well that's what this boils down to, right? people who make outward displays of cultural preferences while eschewing more common and generally more established, populist styles (say, sports gear or business suits or mom jeans). this is all about appearances, "understanding" doesn't even figure into it.

xp

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

a town like Athens, GA can have as much of the fashion/style signifiers as well as the creative community/interconnectedness as one of the big three, even more so, imo. lack of large entertainment/media/fashion industries makes more room for more ~authenticity~ in those communities imo

I don't think a hipster doesn't genuinely enjoy sriracha, or is putting it on god damn everything purely as a fashion statement, but the appreciation operates more on a novelty level. the fickle tastes of the hipster can leave a sriracha-man in a precarious situation when he's on the wrong end of a sriracha bubble.

Assalamu Alaikum, dear brothers, sisters and all those visiting.

Thank you for visiting the site of Halal Pet Products Ltd, producers of the worlds first commercially produced meat based Halal cat food.

Non-Muslim visitors may at this stage need a short explanation, as to why the availability of a Halal cat food is important to a growing number of Muslims.

Firstly, there is of course no obligation in Islam on a cat to eat Halal food. The obligation is on Muslims themselves not to handle haram foodstuffs or feed it to either other humans or indeed animals. Muslims would also not willingly want to store haram food in their house.

Secondly, the growing importance of Islam amongst UK citizens and others around the world means that many people are attempting to adhere more strictly to their faith. Many are therefore horrified to discover that other cat foods on the market contain haram meat & meat derivatives. Those that have attempted to comply with their faith’s requirement by buying fish based products are doubly concerned on discovering, that even in this supposedly harmless product the coating used on the food itself contains haram meat and even pork.

Muezza Pure, our premium brand of cat food (minimum 39% meat content) is the UK’s first Halal pet food for cats. It gives Muslim cat owners the choice and opportunity of purchasing a 100% Halal pet food for their cats, thus avoiding the need to compromise their beliefs by handling Haram food stuffs in their home.

Research indicates that the UK has over 2 million Muslims with 20% of them being cat owners. Our product aims to provide a Halal option for this customer base and also others that wish to provide their cat with a tasty, nutritious and healthy complete cat food.

Absolutely all ingredients and methods used in the production of Muezza Pure complete cat food are 100% Halal. For more information visit why choose Muezza Pure.

Muezza Pure is more than a lifestyle choice for you, your cat and your home.

the conversation (the part i heard) was about how the woman's daughter liked things with owls on them.

Speck (get bent), Friday, 9 September 2011 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

as a female born in the mid-70s on the west coast, it is my birthright to freely like owls, imo, real or macrame or on a tshirt. and wolves and foxes and whales and dragons, all of the animals really!

i am not a hipster, i think that's pretty clear to all involved.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

i have a '70s macrame owl on my wall -- i bought it in a thrift store in st. louis six years ago, a few years before the owl-as-crafty/etsy-meme really came to fruition.

Speck (get bent), Friday, 9 September 2011 03:28 (thirteen years ago)

Most people these days seem to use "hipster" to refer to a certain type of fashion victim and with those people you can't really be ahead of the curve since it's always about being of the moment. You get no points for doing something before everyone else. It's not about actual cultural knowledge or creativity so much as latching onto passing cultural signifiers.

On the streets of Franklin and Nashville and almost every town throughout America now, hipsters scuttle by on scooters, zip around in Zipcars or Smart cars, roll by on fixed-gear bikes or walk about in snazzy high-top sneakers and longboard shorts. They snap Instagram photos of each other — in black skinny jeans and T-shirts with funky epigrams like "If You Deny It, You Are A Hipster" — and turn the pix into iPhone cases. They buy cool-cat snuggle clothes at American Eagle and down-market monkey boots at Urban Outfitters. They drink cheap beer, listen to music on vinyl records and decorate their lairs with upcycled furniture.

They follow indie bands and camp out at Occupy movements. They work as programmers and shop clerks, baristas and bartenders. They are gamers and volunteers, savvy entrepreneurs and out-of-work basement dwellers.

"In negative hipsterology, it is accepted that the hipster is ineffable, an abstract experience that can only be recognized or remembered—that is, human beings cannot describe in words the essence of the perfect hipster that is unique to the individual, nor can they define the hipster, in its immense complexity, related to the entire field of reality, and therefore all descriptions if attempted will be ultimately false and conceptualization should be avoided; in effect, it eludes definition by definition"

Which is not to say that I approve of someone 10 years younger dressing like that.

Fine says he tries not to worry too much about the way his shows - or his hipster identity - are perceived.

"Hipster or no hipster, the only sure thing is that we're all going to perish," he said. "And so we better have some fun and not care too much about what people call us."

people are too demoralized to be hipsters now. to be cool you need style, verve, ironic detachment, and there is no one like that now. everyone just argues.

Treeship, Monday, 10 April 2017 02:18 (eight years ago)

a hipster is someone with the coolest car in town. they snap their fingers and point all the time, and keep a pack of cigs rolled up in their sleeve. they enlist in the military on the first day of new wars because they're natural leaders, and they're great at dancing.

Once this middle-aged narrator was flying around the estate on a kick scooter like some unstoppable hipster panther, from a passing taxi a young lady shouted "Gangster!" at me with an outreached fist, with no trace at all of ironic ridicule.

Well fortified with the teachings of the wise,
Where we may look down on others as they stumble along,
Vainly searching for the true path of life

This is a tough one for me, I'm honestly not sure if i am or (more likely) was a hipster.
In the narrower sense of skinny jeans + ukuleles + ironic facial hair + sufjan stevens or w/e, then no.

Still true. The current cultural conditions don’t leave space for anyone to be cool.

treeship., Wednesday, 30 December 2020 15:00 (four years ago)

This reminds me of a book I received as a gift last year called Twee, by Mark Spitz, published in 2014. He takes a very loose definition of twee as an umbrella term covering hipsters, organic farmer's markets, indie music, etc. Reading it just five years after it was published, the complacency was astounding: "with Obama as president, we've solved all those social problems of the last millennium. Now, we can focus on curating our K Records and Postcard discographies, collecting Wes Anderson DVDs, etc".

It's a decent overview of the products of "twee culture", but trying to sell this culture as "the new revolution" looks spectacularly non-prophetic.

In the sense of "Too cool to live, let alone, like, shop at The Gap."
"Was into things before they caught on" - probably as a teenager.

Gonna say I'm an ex-teenager.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 23:39 (four years ago)

Hipsters are low cut trousers amirite.
That or 40s opportunists hanging around the jazz scene.

Not eejits with wacky moustaches and truck driver hats.
Does the current crop update it's trends with as great frequency. Did it ever become hip to be a recluse. Or would that just be opportunistic this year.
