They are practically the same person. They should play sisters. Do you have a preference?

Mulligan was the only thing in the Wall Street sequel that didn't make me irrationally angry

although there was so much TheBeef in that movie, TheBeefing all over the place, I might have given anyone a free pass in that role

In interviews, Michelle is so serious sometimes that it comes off as haughty, but I think she's just someone who finds a lot of reward in acting and isn't as comfortable with all the other trappings of celebrity.

otm everyone itt so far, but also she is a nice person. she kindly held a door for me at a show in chapel hill(bright eyes/grandaddy iirc lol had to have been at least 10 years ago) -- she was there b/c of dawson's creek and also she was dating some local musician dude -- and her beauty was like a dazzling bright light, no exaggeration

it's also hard to know how carey will age because she is 15

people who LOATHE carey are pretty fuckin weird. she has poor taste in guys i guess [off colour 'hope mumford guy kills himself, that way they'd be even more similar' joek] but enh.

voted carey bc she does better work in 'an education' and 'never let me go' than i've seen from MW. who i don't dislike, but i had to look at imdb to see what she's done. there's a few things i ought to watch but im not bowled over. and im somewhat more stoked for 'shame' than MW playing marilyn.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

Sillier than a movie that posits Skarsgaaaaaaaard (with that accent!) and Mulligan as a couple? Sillier than those scenes with her bickering parents?

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

I'd mind less if I didn't read a positive review which didn't praise the movie in the same terms over and over ("The debut of the next Audrey Hepburn"! "Quirky!" "British!" "It has Oscar written all over it!"). I'm sure I didn't read them all.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

Cracks > An Education, as far as movies about the debasement of upper class British dolls goes.

*ter jacket (jaymc), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

Deschanel's an okay actress who comes off worse because most of her roles are written as male-indie fantasies by and for men.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

Which must be why I don't hate her...

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

to whatever extent i've even heard of anyone discuss CM it seems like she's well liked by women, although she seems like one of those """"famous"""" types who gets an Oscar nod and a bunch of roles in movies that weren't necessarily big hits before people in America really have any idea who she is and is still in the middle of that process

I don't usually loathe celebrities until they do something egregious or have annoying voices or something. CM is at the very distant periphery of my consciousness (until someone mentioned 'An Ed' I wouldn't have put her together with the person mentioned wrt laBeouf) and that's all I know her from; a cute film that I barely remember. She's cute. We'll see if that turns into anything.

CM in her movies isn't an ingenue exactly (she's a gamine, if that's a noun), have no idea what her 'star brand' is, but it's not like zoey's whatever it is. zo-zo's is pretty toxic at this point.

h8 sensitive dudes tho

a hurrrr hurrrr (history mayne), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

Gamine is a noun not an adjective.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't followed Zooey enough to see the toxicity. I'm awfully sensitive but I'm kinda lazy.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

gamine can be an adjective

anyway, CM's brand probably more towards zoey's 'your highness'* co-star nathalie portman: small, short-haired fine-featured ladies who do the acting

I think we'll have a better idea about Carey later this year when we've had a chance to see both DRIVE and SHAME. But she's very good in AN EDUCATION and also NEVER LET ME GO.

Joan Collins has blasted Kate Winslet's "awful" hair and "dreadful" dress sense.

The 78-year-old actress is stunned by the Oscar winner's disappointing outfit choices and slammed her "ghastly" accessorising at the recent Venice Film Festival.

When shown a picture of the Reader star, Joan - who is famous for her glamorous look - said: "Oh, that's a dreadful dress. The worst dress. And ghastly shoes and an awful hairstyle. I'm sorry."

As well as being critical of Kate, Joan also blasted singer Adele, Gwyneth Paltrow - who recently described her late grandmother as a "****" - and admitted she is unhappy that An Education star Carey Mulligan is to star in a forthcoming production of My Fair Lady.

She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Is (Gwyneth) the one who called her grandmother a rude word on air? I thought that was pretty shocking.

"I don't want to comment on Carey Mulligan. I can't believe she's playing Eliza Doolittle in a new movie.

"Adele is a very good singer, very, very talented, but she has a terrible hairpiece."

1. she is v. talented, shining in otherwise shit movies (shutter island) or making otherwise dull ideas worth watching (wendy and lucy)
2. she is v. pretty
3. she seems chill, from the rare amount of interviews she does. none of that 'that girl so annoying that i want to fuck her' stuff, that girl is nice so ilx is in love.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 09:41 (fourteen years ago)

didn't she just get set on fire in 'shutter island'? i can't remember, and i even liked that film a little. emily mortimer actually shone iirc.

being pretty isn't that unusual among top-tier actresses, though id agree that vanity fair did her no favours with the marilyn thing. (well: sorta: it's not all VF: she has done a film playing marilyn. but they made emma stone look less than lovely which is a kind of achievement.)

i think someone told me carey mulls is an irl lovely person but i might have got wires crossed.

watching my swag like a hawk (history mayne), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 09:45 (fourteen years ago)

Is there actually any similarity between them other than the same haircut?

Carey is mostly good in underwhelming films (An Education, Never Let Me Go) but hasn't really got much under her belt yet. Going "there is essentially no point in her existing" is a fucking weird thing to say.

I've barely seen anything Michelle's been in actually, but I get the feeling Carey is several years behind her in terms of career.

I haven't seen a single Mulligan movie or performance, except the Bleak House miniseries apparently, in which I didn't recall her.

However, she has legit stage chops it seems -- I would've gone to the off-Bway version of Through a Glass Darkly if I had the cash. And I will be seeing Shame in about 3 weeks.

jaymc, it's A WEEK with Marilyn that M.W. is playing, so it's not a biopic.

Michelle recently opened up to Elle about her hair: “What [my daughter] Matilda would love is for her mom to grow out the cropped hair, though that’s unlikely to happen any time soon. I’ve really grown into it - I feel like myself with short hair. And it’s been a really long time since I had long hair, five years. Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!”

“Michelle Williams is in early talks to take on the role of rock icon Janis Joplin in a new biopic directed by Sean Durkin, the director of Martha Marcy May Marlene,” reports the Guardian‘s Catherine Shoard. “The film, titled Janis, is based the singer’s sister Laura Joplin’s book Love, Janis, which uses the singer’s letters to track her life from the coffee house roots of her career through to Woodstock, when she struggled with alcohol and drug addiction to cope with her sudden celebrity.”

I've only seen a few episodes and know very little about the show, but from what I recall of the pilot she was presented as the stunningly beautiful troubled girl who all the boys instantly fall for, setting up the fans to see her as a rival to relatable girl-next-door Katie Holmes.

I lived in Wilmington while it was shooting and hobnobbed a tiny bit. Also watched the entire series almost 20 years later to look for people and places I knew there. AMA! lol
Michelle Williams & her character are all time in my book. I couldn’t recount plot points bc it has been a few years but I remember liking her in general.

No idea why the girl next door trope persists. I don’t know any girls next door aside from the ones in tv/movies.
