Yeah, Carey is charming and adorable, but I respect Michelle more as an actress and person.

In interviews, Michelle is so serious sometimes that it comes off as haughty, but I think she's just someone who finds a lot of reward in acting and isn't as comfortable with all the other trappings of celebrity.

A very long time ago I watched a documentary about Dawson's Creek, there was lots of interviews with fans, all the fans hated the character Williams played. Why is this? I watched a fair amount of Dawson's Creek and I don't recall there being anything wrong with her character.

The writers seemed to hate Williams's character on Dawson's Creek (cf. the way they killed her in the finale) but I couldn't begin to guess what or why the Dawson's Creek fandom thinks.

I've only seen a few episodes and know very little about the show, but from what I recall of the pilot she was presented as the stunningly beautiful troubled girl who all the boys instantly fall for, setting up the fans to see her as a rival to relatable girl-next-door Katie Holmes.

I lived in Wilmington while it was shooting and hobnobbed a tiny bit. Also watched the entire series almost 20 years later to look for people and places I knew there. AMA! lol
Michelle Williams & her character are all time in my book. I couldn’t recount plot points bc it has been a few years but I remember liking her in general.

No idea why the girl next door trope persists. I don’t know any girls next door aside from the ones in tv/movies.

Yeah, the initial presentation as hot party girl could have haters I guess (ala Marissa on the OC... but no one on Gossip Girl) but that was undermined pretty quickly.

except that sadly that was a thing in almost every show of its kind in the 90’s

for sure - One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl were the first ones I can think of that broke the mold a bit on the "hot bitchy girl" and sex fronts

One Tree Hill was the second rate Dawson’s Creek that shot in Wilmington! The record store was my friend’s store!

I don’t disagree! And I don’t care at all about what Michelle Williams does - it’s just something that I remembered seeing on one of my feeds.

Michelle Williams is a marvelous actor.

I love her in all the Kelly Reichardt movies. I just looked and amazingly, of all the stuff she's done, I think I've only seen her in maybe one or two other things. Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island, Manchester by the Sea (lol all location titles!) ... Wait, I know I saw The Station Agent but don't remember her in it, same with I'm Not There.

The first time I noticed how great she was, was in Me Without You.

I recall that Dawson's Creek documentary having a fan reaction to each character and three or more fans said "I hate her" or something along those lines and I've been reeling in confusion about it for 20 years.

I think it's 2020 and we can let that go because it was petty and hurtful -- and Michelle Williams obviously deserves better

I've seen a few films I found very overrated recently, so I might have been all set up to overrate Showing Up myself, I don't know. But I liked the mood, found everyone interesting, and am an easy mark for wounded-animal stories. I even liked Judd Hirsch for a change.

I liked it quite a bit.

I find Williams performances powerful but a bit offputtingly flopsweaty - which makes her well cast in Fabelmans. Mulligan has some kind of blank screen non-charisma that for whatever reason doesn’t work for me. She’s fun in Blink.

I'd have to look at them side-by-side to explain why, but I found her different here than in Wendy and Lucy or Certain Women. I like Kelly Reichardt's contemporary films so much more than the two set in the 1800s.

A Promising Young Woman is on Netflix, so I finally caught up with that. Definitely not a good movie--didactic, and so far-fetched--but it did hold my interest just for being so weird.

Am surprised I was so out-of-the-gate in my dislike of CM itt. I was under the mistaken impression I came by that arrival gradually

Michelle Williams by a mile and also she did a great job reading Britney’s book. It was like a single chapter before I accepted the voice as Britney’s.

I find CM very cold and therefore much less interesting to me.
