We've not done it in a while, and there are lots of new Londoners, so why not. Next couple of weeks maybe, somewhere central. Anyone up for it?

Good reasons for this:

- Going home and back after work is a pain in the arse for a lot of people
- Also pointless
- Some people have to head home early so want to arrive early
- People might want to hang out with those people who need to leave early

Also I love how your post implies no problem with the falling over bit.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:38 (fourteen years ago)

I'm unlikely to be in the pub before 6.30 or so at any rate. Although I might favour a pub that serves food.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:39 (fourteen years ago)

pub in the Euston-ish area, Weds 19th, then?

pretty spoilt for choice - the Euston Tap might be too little, but there's the bree louise (beer!), the exmouth arms (universal jukebox!), the square tavern (estate pub!), the doric arch (um)...

Or do we want to be classic and go for a Sam Smith's (of which none nr euston iirc), in which case maybe somewhere like the Yorkshire Grey or the Fitzroy Tavern?

Mark G, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

what about the norfolk arms? food there was great last time i went

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's actually more the "leave work at 5pm" thing that makes me boggle. so early!

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

The first time I went into the Norfolk Arms the food was amazing but I went again recently and it's gone rapidly downhill.

I'm sort of a hater of Euston pubs and Euston in general, although I haven't been in the Exmouth Arms. The Bree Louise is great but I'm not sure what it's like on a weeknight, or whether it's FAP-friendly.

Would Bloomsbury or Kings Cross be in contention?

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:54 (fourteen years ago)

(also the norfolk arms does tapas-style food as well as proper dishes, which is handy for things like this)

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:54 (fourteen years ago)

It's a bit gastro though isn't it? I never thought of it as the sort of place where people just go for a few beers.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

the norfolk arms is barely a pub, there are better places to go on judd street alone.

(if we go somewhere on judd street i am so going for szechuan first)

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Friday, 30 September 2011 08:58 (fourteen years ago)

well if you want food gastro is the way to go...

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:59 (fourteen years ago)

if everyone wants food, and if everyone's comfortable paying over £10 for something they could probably make at home (unless they're you), sure.

Can't figure what is wrong with going to the pub straight after work (although I finish around 6pm not 5pm) but that might say more about my bad habits than anything else.

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 30 September 2011 09:01 (fourteen years ago)

i don't really think you can go to a gastropub in a large group, or for a session of shifting numbers over quite a long time?

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Friday, 30 September 2011 09:02 (fourteen years ago)

something they could probably make at home

is this yr thinking on gastro food in general? i know i couldn't. and even if i could, damn i'd be willing to pay someone else to do all the hard work.

ledge, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:05 (fourteen years ago)

A really good gastropub will usually be serving things you can't easily make at home. Not sure the Norfolk Arms counts as a really good gastropub any more, and in any case they're really not suitable for FAPs at all.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

ledge, depends on the place - a really good gastropub will obviously be over my skill/imagination/sourcing level. but middling gastropub food is just so... middling! (but then i am 1. cheap 2. grumpy 3. brought up by good cooks 4. turning into my dad.)

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Friday, 30 September 2011 09:11 (fourteen years ago)

Kings Cross / Euston is perfect for me.

dog latin, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

Would prefer, as Matt, somewhere a bit further South like Bloomsbury (or Fitzrovia).

Upt0eleven, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:14 (fourteen years ago)

But not really fussed tbh, just don't like the areas around train stations.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:15 (fourteen years ago)

i guess yr right about middling gastropubs but they're still light years better foodwise than yer average chain pub.

anyway totally up for pre-pub szechuan...

ledge, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)

The Calthorpe Arms on Gray's Inn Road has usually served us pretty well in the past.

Also what's the Queens Head in King's Cross like? Always looks great when I walk past, might be a bit small or busy for a biggish gathering.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:19 (fourteen years ago)

There's not been an official ILX fap for, how long?

Mark G, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:22 (fourteen years ago)

"food you can make at home" is not a concept i comprehend. gastropubs tend not to serve breakfast cereal which is my limit.

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:24 (fourteen years ago)

what about the pakenham? that has the advantage of space, which is the #1 factor in what makes a pub good for me.

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:25 (fourteen years ago)

Good shout imo. Thinking about it I retract my earlier generalisation, as there are perfectly nice pubs in Kings Cross / Euston.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:27 (fourteen years ago)

I am down with the Pakenham actually, it's easy to get a big group together there. Also there'll be football on the telly but non-intrusively.

Also I want to try the meatball place that's just opened in the old Quality Chop House on Farringdon Road, so that might be good for pre-pub food.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:37 (fourteen years ago)

but non-intrusively.

hope so... Not that I have a problem with people enjoying the football, but I'm one of those people who gets really distracted by TV in pubs, even if it's something I'm not remotely interested in. It's a kind of magpie reflex. I'll try to ignore it :-)

dog latin, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:43 (fourteen years ago)

don't think the doric arch is as awful as people make it out to be. the code thing is anonying i suppose.

euston tap nice drinks but we'd have to sit in that upstairs bit with no window.

norfolk arms is ok tried the tapas didn't blow my mind. maybe we can all go to chilli cool for steamboat/hotpot (left hand side entrance)?

lord john russell is alright but expensive beers.

the prince arthur on eversholt st is also alright.. table service may put people off though (i love it)

square tavern you'll get a seat but are young's pubs expensive or are they expensive?

they've done up prince of wales' feathers now it's poncey

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

you're too positive about the prince arthur! table service is the worst.

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Friday, 30 September 2011 09:54 (fourteen years ago)

table service in a pub, really?!

i've no opinion on that but a mad bar crush that you have to fight your way to the front of and then try to catch the eyes of dickhead bar staff intent on ignoring you and it takes 45 mins just to get a drink are the actual worst

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:56 (fourteen years ago)

oh god i was in the founders arms at bankside last night, queue for the bar was six deep all night long. it has a massive seating area and the bar is *far* too small to cope, would be a decent pub otherwise.

ledge, Friday, 30 September 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

Generally speaking a good pub in Zone 2 or 3 will be better than a good pub in Zone 1, but Zone 1 pubs need to fill slightly different criteria. If you transported most of these pubs we're talking about to Highbury or Hackney or Greenwich or somewhere they'd be fine.

Actually one of the reasons I like places like the Calthorpe and the Pakenham and so forth is that they feel quite local despite being close to the centre of town.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:00 (fourteen years ago)

i enjoy drinking so any pubs that minimises my need to be away from the table and maximise my time when i'm putting drinks down my throat is good in my books.

i'll happily drink in any of those pubs btw. for the above reason.

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Friday, 30 September 2011 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

it happens EVERYWHERE, at labour conference exactly the same thing happened and i reflected on the oddity of being reminded so much of music festival experiences in that situation. i've never had table service in a pub and the idea seems bizarre but it can only improve the situation tbh

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:02 (fourteen years ago)

hence most important criteria for central pubs = relatively quiet. can't be doing with the sardine-like ones.

lex pretend, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:03 (fourteen years ago)

The main problem with table service in pubs, especially in the Prince Arthur, is that they only come round irregularly, and never when you want them to. And there's a huge gap between ordering the drink and actually getting it. And if you're impatient and try to go to the bar then it's even harder to get served because they're dealing with table service orders.

Britain is rubbish at adopting continental things.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:04 (fourteen years ago)

Matt DC, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:09 (fourteen years ago)

Most important for me in a pub is my ears - I can't hardly hear over a hubbub, so sardine-like pubs are something of a solitary experience (not that I'll be attending, like).

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:13 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it's amazing how many pubs pay attention to everything except acoustics. A crowded pub can be fine if you can hear the people you're talking to, but those big high-ceilinged places tend to be echo chambers for background noise so you can only hear the person you're right next to.

yes, the whole thing of gradually turning the volume up and up as the evening goes on so that you can't hear anybody's chat in order to "raise the atmosphere" i.e. if you're over 25 eff off grandad you are not our demographic.

as long as the queue isn't too intense, i quite like the chance to get up and order from the bar. it gives me a little break, gives my legs a stretch and also i find the idea of table service in a pub a bit weird, like I don't need the subservience of the restaurant experience or something?

dog latin, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:27 (fourteen years ago)

Oh god, there's an otherwise lovely place in Hitchin with a low ceiling, big glass windows and cold hard flooring. I object to going there because all I can hear is the screech of chairs and bar stools scraping and echoing around the place. Plus in the summer it gets like a greenhouse. Shame really - the people there are nice and they serve decent drinks.

I was waiting for someone to suggest a Hackney pub that would be a ridiculous trek for everyone who lives outside East London.

i have always hated the "just after work" aspect of these. i still can't believe anyone a) leaves work as early as 5pm b) goes straight to the pub. TOO EARLY, SO WRONG, MAKES IT FEEL LIKE WORK DRINKS. i cannot be in a pub for evening weekday drinking earlier than 8pm.

i'd actually suggest trying local zone 2 pubs tbh. everything's pretty interconnected, it's going down the pub on a weekday so it's not like you'll be staying past the last tube anyway

not sure why we're having this great long discussion about which pub.. since we're only going to be there for a couple of hours anyway

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Friday, 30 September 2011 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, but people need to know which one, rather than trust to coincidence.

Mark G, Friday, 30 September 2011 13:37 (fourteen years ago)

isn't the pakenham still open until like 2am? staying out past the last tube isn't always intentional...

Yes, to lots of posts on this thread. Noise: I usually can't make out what anyone's saying unless they're right next to me, so I usually resort to grinning and nodding a lot and hoping that's an appropriate response. Table Service in pubs: terrible idea (for all the reasons already mentioned). This was the norm in Italy when I lived there and you could easily end up waiting half an hour between arriving and getting your first drink - not a problem for most Italians (who would only have one drink all evening), but infuriating for me. I once tried going to the bar and asking if I could have a drink while I was waiting for my drink, but was informed that this wasn't the done thing.

Ha, that's some classic British behaviour - regardless of circumstance, still got to get those eight pints in. My pal could never understand that rounds were a no-no too - he'd always make a point of being first up, spend £20 or whatever, then be annoyed all evening because everyone took it as an eccentric, extravagant gift, and he still had to keep on buying his own drinks.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 1 October 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)

I think we should make this M&T seeing as reaction seems to be largely positive. Has aweseome beer as well. Might chat to Tim about getting one of the bigger tables reserved as well.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 November 2011 10:14 (fourteen years ago)

I should be up for this, M&T looks to be near a 48 bus stop so easy for me to get home, only thing is I have a leaving do to go to after work, and this worries me slightly because last time I went to a FAP I also had a leaving do before it and I was slaughtered by the end of it and got lost on my way home! I think I can stumble to the 48 though.

octavio paz de la huerta (c sharp major), Thursday, 3 November 2011 10:36 (fourteen years ago)

good pre-FAP anti-slaughter practice is to get a nice beigel in nearby brick lane and wander through the market as you scoff it and it tidies itself up, allowing the lads outside the indian restaurants to try and entice you inside

mark s, Thursday, 3 November 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

Dangerous phoning ahead territory may be necessary in this case as parts of the bar aren't particularly large-group friendly, especially if the downstairs is closed.

Tim, Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

i now have a working phone! tracer has my number.

see you guys on tuesday, if not before!

geeta, Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

I blame that Gamaliel fellow. How come we've never FAPped in this Mason + Taylor place before?

Oh god yes, never been quite right after that FAP. Steer clear of the Spanish bar and I must on no account smoke.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

if you guys head to spanish bar afterwards call me.......

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

What's Spanish Bar? Got introduced to the Dolphin in Hackney for late night boozing last night.

Franz Kappa (S-), Thursday, 3 November 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

i fell asleep in dolphin this place is super awful

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 November 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

ha ha the spanish bar!!

i have some old-school ilx memories circa 10 years ago, about the spanish bar

geeta, Friday, 4 November 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

geeta, Friday, 4 November 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)

i'm one of the aforementioned new londoners and i should be able to make this! i am new to FAPing but i believe i am capable of drinking.

sunn :o))) (Merdeyeux), Friday, 4 November 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

I too do hope to make this, though I have to shepherd my parents around london this week. Also, do we have a time frame for this?

Hills Like White Broncos (EDB), Friday, 4 November 2011 07:26 (fourteen years ago)

Unless things go a bit crazy and I am late I'm gonna start drinking from around 5.30. I'll have a paperback on my table (or reading it if I'm on my own)...

Is this happening in the basement or ground floor bar?

xyzzzz__, Friday, 4 November 2011 08:39 (fourteen years ago)

One day I will make it to this Spanish bar...

xyzzzz__, Friday, 4 November 2011 08:41 (fourteen years ago)

v.sorry i will miss all my hackney-ilxor neighbours -- this house is empty and lonely, only the ghosts of old family pets to pass the time with

mark s, Friday, 4 November 2011 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

M&T is nowhere near the Spanish Bar sadly, although if a FAP were to end up there at some point that would surely cement this old-skool revival we've been having recently.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 09:42 (fourteen years ago)

is anyone still in contact with gareth? can we convince him to be there on tuesday? i haven't seen him in ages.

geeta, Friday, 4 November 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

it's pretty hard to convince him to do anything, but i might give it a try

octavio paz de la huerta (c sharp major), Friday, 4 November 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

i'm fairly sure gareth has read this thread but pinning him down to a commitment is as elusive as ever!

mark s, Friday, 4 November 2011 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

to get into my flat geeta had had to track down ex-ilxor norman phay, who was running a secret radioshow somewhere in hackney*, with special guest BILL NELSON, who was demonstrating his new synth, which is made of wood. To introduce him, norman played a bebop deluxe cover of lene lovich's "lucky number".

ha ha what happened to norman? i miss him!

geeta, Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

ok london GET PSYCHED

mark s, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

Bump.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

people who want food, when are you aiming to get there by?

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 09:49 (fourteen years ago)

I've had about 3 hours sleep and have also managed to pull something in my back, so I'm not really feeling brilliant about coming out tonight. That said, I've been looking forward to this so will try and make it down. I finish work in Kings X at 5:30pm and then I've got no choice but to kick around. Will anyone be around as early as 6:30ish?

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 09:55 (fourteen years ago)

I guess I'm going to this, and I guess I'll go for like, 7?

Noise II Men (EDB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 10:02 (fourteen years ago)

Will anyone be around as early as 6:30ish?

I work five minutes from it, so I imagine I'll be there early

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 10:13 (fourteen years ago)

Cool. Unless I'm dragging myself along by the lips by the end of the afternoon I'll try and be there (where is it again? Sorry, I'm Londonslexic). I look and feel like a dog's dinner today btw.

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

It's at Mason & Taylor at the Shoreditch end of Bethnal Green Road. Nearest station = Shoreditch High Street.

Will be there around 7ish I think.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

cool cool.

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 11:38 (fourteen years ago)

I have given 5 lectures today => I am looking forward to this. How to school teachers do it? Should be there around 7, too.

toby, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

So I've forgotten what the etiquette is here - do I say "Hello, I'm Charlie" or "Hello I'm Dog Latin"? The latter would be weird but the former might be less insightful.

Anyway, see you guys in about an hour or so. Looking forward to it!

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

I intend saying "Hello, I'm Charlie", even though it's not my name

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

I plan on saying "Hello, I'm Dog Latin", it's less embarrassing that way

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

cannot come to this after all because work - hope you guys have a lovely time!

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

stet is in london, now?

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 10:48 (fourteen years ago)

It was quite good, yes. It was good to see all those people. I found this slightly moving. I liked to see Colette for instance who surprisingly said she had moved back to England. I met Dog Latin. Three ILB specialists were present which made for an entertaining sort of fap within the fap, it appeared.

The beer was good, expensive and almost all unusually strong.

A great book called THE FOOTBALL MAN was examined and its author's provenance read out loud and then investigated online. Arsenal and Tottenham fans enjoyed their new reconciliation and mutual respect.

I liked to see Geeta and hope to see her again soon. She announced a gig that Mike said he would like to go to.

I asked Mike to name his 5 museum exhibits for the exibition after Postmodernism. They included

an old camera
Peter Eastoe, 1981
Ever Decreasing Circles

That's only 3. I don't recall if there were two more.

The l0u1s jagg3r fellow showed up late which I thought was a good effort. We managed 8 accents from around the British Isles on our way through the East London Line. Then we wound up on a late bus through New Cross. It is odd to encounter such places with other human beings. Maybe we will go to see a Charlton Athletic home match.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 10:50 (fourteen years ago)

I is
XP damn I missed j4gg3r? Boo

stet, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 10:52 (fourteen years ago)

The beer was good, expensive and almost all unusually strong.

Yes. I want to die right now.

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

I did not enjoy the weekly fire alarm test at 10:30 :(

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

This was great and we should do it again soon. Attempting to explain "bubble and squeak", "toad in the hole" and "scotch eggs" to Geeta was very entertaining, seeing as there was a lot of lolbritish food on the menu. Best ingredient in B&S is clearly the duck egg though.

That was probably the least steady I have ever seen Steady Mike as well.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

Mike stated that Everton would finish in the top 8.

Not sure if he now counts that as 'effusive'.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that was lots of fun, fantastic to meet geeta at last! mmm quail eggs duck eggs all the eggs.

i drank a lot of wine but am oddly unfragile and in fact think i may go for a RUN now.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 11:17 (fourteen years ago)

I got absurdly lost on the way home and ended up springing for a cab. The driver was adept at following 'the scenic route' designated for non-locals. Great time though!

Franz Kappa (S-), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 12:06 (fourteen years ago)

I was very proud that I managed to get home with no problems at all, and not being swayed by Colonel Poo's shortcut advice ;-)

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

So we're all going to see (ILMer) Milton Parker at Cafe Oto tonight, right?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 12:27 (fourteen years ago)

I would love to go to that but, alas, the pull of putting the kids to bed is actually stronger. Can't do two nights out in a row.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

I'm in. Meet somewhere first?

Franz Kappa (S-), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, great to see Geeta again.

Had to duck out of Cafe Oto unfortunately. Was fun the one time I saw Milton so have a gd time!

The Lexington! Excellent, can walk to pub.

Thomas K Amphong (Tom D.), Sunday, 27 October 2013 11:38 (twelve years ago)

By coincidence I'll be at the Lexington this afternoon anyway (gig upstairs) so will say hello for a bit.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 27 October 2013 11:56 (twelve years ago)

That was pretty good fun, with an excellent Dele Fadele cameo appearance! I doubt there will be a better Lou Reed obit than the Lexington sourced one tonight.
