Defend the indefensible: Shots

Seriously now.

Like many things that are stupid and self-destructive, they are basically indefensible. And yet I occasionally still do them. It's sort of difficult to turn them down when someone has come back from the bar having voluntarily spent £30 on them.

doing shots is never my fault or a thing i actively decide to do, they just...happen to you. somehow.

they tend to bookend the same sort of night though - the precursor to those nights that tend to carry over well into the next day, and then at 2pm the following afternoon they seem to be a good idea again, and then the memories tend to end.

Pounding shot after shot is clearly daft but there's nothing wrong with shots of vodka punctuated by glasses of something softer.

What Matt DC said upthread is true. also - if you're not really feeling it after your third pint, you're guaranteed to be anyone's after a tequila slammer. it's a horrible yet sometimes necessary evil, although I find I only ever do these with, say, after-work drinks with colleagues. There's also the Greek thing where you're at the end of the meal and the waiter will come round with some kind of foul and complementary firewater and he has a shot with you. I've never worked out how those dudes stave off rampant alcoholism/collapsing on the job.

oooh, ice-cold vodka shots with apple juice chaser is actually the best way to get pissed though, as I learnt on my trip to Poland. We were invited by some Polish students to join them. Instead of buying pints, they order a bottle of Bolz (or similar) which is kept on ice. You get one shot and one glass of apple juice (I think they call this Jabberwocky or something, much to my amusement). The host pours a shot, gives it to his neighbour, who downs it, chases it with a nip of jabberwocky and refills the glass. It gets passed round like a spliff/bottle of poppers. I guarantee, it's one of the most sociable ways to enjoy group drinks and much more fun than everyone nursing pints.

I have a complex rule system worked out for when I take and when I refuse shots. In general, I don't take shots after 6pm on a weekend or holiday, unless shot is first alcoholic beverage consumed, or third if the first was a shot and the second a pint. On a weekday, I will tend not to do shots at all, but would have one (1) Jameson at the commencement of drinking, provided drinking commences less than three hours after leaving work.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy a shot of cheapy whisky without a mixer though. I'm fine with a Bells and coke, but wouldn't drink anythign like that straight.

My recovery time for a shot has increased from a few seconds in my 20s to like, a full half-hour now so I generally pass. Plus I pretty much never want to get that drunk anymore. <-- HUH. That is a revelation I just had right now, even though it's been quietly true for a couple of years, at least.

Tequila shots I will generally defend, though, but only if we're talking about really good stuff at a restaurant/bar with a wide variety. Tequila should generally be consumed in shot form. But if you're sitting anywhere but a dorm room doing shots of Two Fingers or some other grocery store bullshit, then you are a disgusting savage.

In Wisconsin we do the "bear fight", that's a Jaegerbomb and an Irish Car Bomb, and once you finish you clank the glasses together like a bear (that's the important part!). Also there is the "lunchbox" which is OJ, beer, and a shot of Amaretto, and whoever finishes it last pays. IMO those are way more fun than shots

tbh if we do shots here it's only to inflict pain on your buddies - either by getting something nasty (like Wild Turkey) or giving them the dreaded "Upside Down" (in which you have to snort a few drops of vodka)

What happens is the O.J. and Amaretto completely overwhelm the taste of the beer, which should be either Blue Moon or something like Miller Lite that has no flavor anyway. You actually don't taste any alcohol at all. It's a lot like cramming orange soda

Oh God. I just remembered this party these people I knew in college had. You had to go through all the rooms in the house and answer questions on which you were graded and then given a shot. There were probably 6 rooms so about 12 shots in all because we went through twice. Then there was a garbage can filled with punch that nobody told me was made with grain alcohol. When we got home I promptly did two bong hits, took off all my clothes, threw up in my then boyfriends bed and passed the out. Jesus Christ if I did that now I'd probably actually die.

Here you can get a Kamikaze shot for $3-4 but they'll give you an entire pint of the stuff for $6. Wild Turkey is $3 a shot and $5 for a glass that's usually about 4 oz.

When I was much younger I drank a whole lot of those foul lunchbox things the night before I was supposed to take a ~ 1,500 mile car trip with somebody and the morning we left, I had the kind of hangover that made being enclosed in a car with me (or with myself) it's own special kind of hell. I've only ever done them on holidays/'special occasions'. If a bar gives me free shots I put it in a vodka + lemonade, it makes both taste better. I've done Jagerbombs a couple of times. Last time was at a friend's wedding last month. I ended up happily drunk - enough to get me to pogo to "Jump Around" and such shit on the dancefloor with likedrunkminded guests, but not completely paralytic.
I wouldn't say never again, but probably never again.

I cannot be in the same room as a Jager shot anymore; after grad school my brain lost the ability to register them as something awesome.

One or two close friend's are prone to buying shots, it usually means a big night out or something, feels good. I like that thing where someone buys shots out of the blue, even though plenty times I'm thinking I don't want a shot.

That "oh no you didn't" thing is actually part of the buzz. I also love when shots are the signifier that things are moving up a notch.

Like you're out on a Sunday and IRS got a bit too drunken then someone buys shots at an opportune time and it just feels funny and wrong.

Also even one shot can tip everyone into really goofy behaviour.

Weirdly the work shots aren't that familiar to me, I've worked in really boozy places but people just drank pints or g and t or whatever else.

i've done this a couple of times, it's like the insanity workout (a ref for the late night infomercial watchers, perhaps?) of getting drunk - a painful slog from the halfway point to the end, but boy does it work.

my experience is that shots just happen to me too - not sure i've ever had the thought 'hey now would be a good time for some shots', but still, there they are.

It is very strange who started this thread, because I very much recall Tracer buying a round of tequila shots at the end of a night. I was done drinking so put the shot in my bag and jolilly ran home. My bag completely smelled like tequila the next day at work.

Oh, it usually totally spills. Especially since two of the times I started running home with it in my messenger bag. The other time my partner was with me and he chased me down and made me take it out of my bag because he knew of the other two times. He finished the drink a block from our house.

my shots rule is that first drink being a shot and a beer is good, then if you’re sipping drinks slowly perhaps a shot with the bartender as their shift changes, or accepting a shot from a bar regular who has ordered one for the group. no bar hopping with a shot at every bar, no accepting shots when you just got a fresh drink

xpost yeah, I don't know why they say to use hot sake in these videos. That seems counterproductive. Plus sake is usually served hot when it's just very average sake.

the sushi place I used to go to in my early 20s had a couple chill owners and if you were there on a slow weeknight, one of them would switch it up and just start handing people at the sushi bar shots of hennessy

In Wisconsin we do the "bear fight", that's a Jaegerbomb and an Irish Car Bomb, and once you finish you clank the glasses together like a bear (that's the important part!). Also there is the "lunchbox" which is OJ, beer, and a shot of Amaretto, and whoever finishes it last pays. IMO those are way more fun than shots
