Totally baffled by Tyrus love. Totally boring, scowling heavy, doesn't scare me. Agree with whoever said on other post that he looks perpetually like Madonna backup dancer. Totally missed casting opportunity IMO, should have complicated him w/ a sense of humor or really anything.

gr80 otm, Tuco was awful, although afaict that was as much how the character was written as how the guy played it -- really came close to giving up on the show entirely during that stretch in season 2

i didn't have a problem with tuco.. at the time his craziness was v effective at conveying how in over their heads they were, and how dangerous this game was. meeting somebody like gus at that point wouldn't have raised the stakes as effectively imo. also yeah he was ott but i get the feeling some drug kingpins play that kind of role as a means of intimidation, and it wouldn't be surprising to me if that role took on its own reality in the kingpin's persona

Raymond Cruz is actually a very nice man in real life, a very sweet guy. Plays one hell of a scary bad guy. Watching the dailies come in on this footage, I said to myself, “Wow, this guy is so damned scary. He’d be a great addition to the show; we’ve got to keep him around for a long time to come. We’ve got to think of more stuff to do with him.”

And right about the time we were having these discussions in the writers’ room, we found out from Raymond Cruz’s agent that he was going to be unavailable to us, because he was a regular on the TV show The Closer on TNT. The producers of The Closer were very nice and very helpful, but they also needed him day-in and day-out to do their show. So they were very magnanimous in helping us work out the opportunity to do one last episode with Raymond Cruz, and that turned out to be the episode that introduces Tio, his uncle, and the one in which Tuco dies.

All of this long-winded explanation is a way of saying the initial plan was to keep Tuco around for a long time, but we were left with no choice but to kill off the character. And, in the absence of Tuco, and the vacuum that that left behind, we thus came up with Gustavo Fring. Gustavo Fring is as button-down, and as business-like, and as cold-blooded as he is because Tuco was not. Essentially Gus Fring was everything Tuco was not. That’s where that character derived from, and that’s why he became the character that he became. You try to think ahead when you do a show like this, and yet so many of your best inventions stem sometimes from bad luck and happenstance.

I thought Tucco was pretty effective. He was ott for sure, but he conveyed the sense of "fucked up person who could snap and be very dangerous to you any second" really well. So well that I couldn't watch some of his eps when they first aired because he reminded me of a real methhead I was once in close quarters with. The guy I knew was not a murderous drug kingpin - just a hillbilly tweaker and small time dealer - but there was that same sense of instability and irrationality that felt very disconcerting in a small space. Since that level of realistic menace wouldn't really carry on TV, you get Tucco.

right i just mean the way delivered lines while he was screaming or getting high or doing a maniacal laugh made me rmde half the time

tuco reminded me of actual tweakers. but the difference was that a guy like walt doesn't actually get to get over on crazy tweaker tuco. he gets himself killed, or his arms broke, or something. that was the problem w/that character for me: there are characters like that, but they're immune to your clever getaway plans and shit.

yup - pretty much what Jenny & mr aerosmith bootleg said. reminds me a crazy not-so-much-meth-but-whatever-was-around-head i knew. he could really jack up the crazy sometimes, he was uunpredictable and occasionally scary and every one in a while he could be really logical and rational. but that would last only as long as it needed to before his next plunge off the deep end.

Listening to Springsteen tonight. I always found the first line of "Atlantic City" to be kind of unintentionally funny: "Well they blew up the Chicken Man in Philly last night." After the last season of Breaking Bad, though, I wonder seriously if Gus, and his final adios, is an homage to that line that was planned all along.

Tuco was certainly not the most subtle character in the show's history, but it was necessary for W&J to face a threat like that at that stage of the overall storyline.

gus is a pretty cool antagonist and a great performance from g-espo but i do think the inscrutable quiet dude who also is capable of emotionless and vicious violence is such a cliche it made his unpredictability a bit predictable, like is S4 ep1 i knew what was going to happen in that scene the instant he started putting on that raincoat.

yeah you're otm about that character type. i overstated my case, he is a cool character and i dig esposito's performance, its just so hard to make a character who's always the cool quiet badass not seem tiresome and mechanical (i know there was more to gus than that but i never found the cracks in the facade compelling)

Best part of the Gus arc was seeing him as an apple-cheeked youngster, ready for the world and wanting to make some meth for the Cartel with his boyfriend.

took me awhile to not see Bob Odenkirk Playing a Kooky Lawyer and to see Saul Goodman, broke the spell of the show for awhile. But he's great in this.

There was one scene where Saul visits Walt in the hospital while Hank's recovering from being shot. The two of them are in a dark, empty waiting room. I can't remember what exactly they were discussing, but it was after that scene that I realized I wasn't seeing Mr. Show anymore.

Feel like this show is about one thing and one thing only, really: being addicted to the tension that comes from high risk behavior. This applies to the major characters, who all engage in dangerous behavior against their better judgment under pretexts of varying degrees of flimsiness, but also to the viewers, who are jerked through one long intense standoff after another. It's fun and it's interesting but it feels very self-contained and almost RPG-ish in it's construction and the way the characters are constantly being played against each other - it doesn't seem especially concerned with versimilitude or finely developed characters or anything really beyond OMG WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT/WHICH SUPPORTING CHARACTER IS GOING TO DIE

liked it best when Jesse and Walt were low-level losers and there was some tension between Walt's extracurricular activities and his "normal life", before the question of whether or not he was doing this because he was going to die/had cancer had been so clearly resolved - by the time we get to season 3 it's essentially an OTT crime dramedy and while it's fun I find it sort of less engaging

xpost I agree with Shakey to some extent -- but I do have kind of a fascination with Walt's megalomania, and how it's affecting his relationships. Kinda like watching poison spread through a body on time release or something. I've always enjoyed that kind of Richard III character arc, maybe I'm a sadist at heart lol.

That tension is still there IMO, obviously it's ramped up by now but there are three family members who are still completely in the dark.

Maybe the final scene will show him staggering out of a burning house, his dead family members laid out on his rocky lawn, Walt laughing manically into the night sky, embers rising up into the darkness, as we fade back to Walt sitting in the police SUV, watching Jesse scamper away after climbing out the window, and then saying to his brother-in-law, "Take me home, Hank."

I'm watching season 4 of The Shield, and none other than Tyrus has popped up as a probably serial killer.

Having watched most of Homicide (we're finishing up the last season now), and all of The Wire and The Shield, I feel like I can ID at least one actor in any subsequent TV drama that was in one of those three shows.

For example, Giancarlo Esposito plays a major role in the last season of Homicide, which just reinforces my opinion of him as a great actor because of how wildly different the roles are and how convincingly he played them both.

The first time I really took notice of Esposito was as the heavy in Fresh. Although, tbh, this was probably the real first time I saw him:

Dunno, I never really saw Saul as much else other than GOB as lawyer rather than magician. Maybe it's because they look a bit similar, but yeah the buffoonishness too I guess. I guess the difference is that Saul's actually good at his job, but they have a lot in common.

I think it's an extremely odd comparison. They inhabit utterly different kinds of fictional universes for a start.

Must just be me then. Saul Goodman always felt like a comedic character breaking through from one studio into another during BB. I was never too keen on him to be honest.

Five more episodes to go. My favourite character at the moment is Lydia--I guess this poll pre-dated her. Mike was great for a while; he became a little mannered toward the end. Excepting his time in recovery, Hank is often my favourite. Gustav, Badger, and Saul, of course. Skyler's amazing at times, and Marie has her moments too. I like Walt Jr. a lot.

Badger and Skinny Pete are a bit like BB’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern- it’s a bit odd having them spit up as they mostly show up as a team.

I think it was Jane who spit up, seconds before she died.

Surprised Gale got no votes here--one of the most intriguing characters I can think of from any series.

I no doubt mentioned this already in one of the BB threads, but the ending to S3/E12--Jesse buying meth off the kid who shot Combo, being told to "Bounce" by him (just like Combo had said to the kid), and then Jesse walking away enraged and staring straight ahead--was one the best.

S3/E11 that should read. S3/E12: somehow forgot crash, bang, "Run."

Read something that called the S3 finale one of the greatest cliffhangers ever. Great finish, but is it a cliffhanger? What are we left wondering?

Quaint reminder of the internet circa 2008 that kills me every time: Skyler using Wikipedia to read up on money laundering, no big deal.

The scene where Skylar tries to get Walt to rehearse the gambling story they're going to tell Hank and Marie is one the series' funniest, I think--Gunn treating it like they're gathered around a table for a full-cast read-through ("You should look down at the ground right here"), Cranston's droll mockery.

Okay: Sky-ler.

There's an early episode where Walt and Jessie meet up in a supermarket, pretending to browse as they discuss plans; positive this is an homage to Double Indemnity. I also wonder if Skyler's great episode-closing "Someone has to protect this family from the man who protects this family" is an homage to Sydney Greenstreet's "I'm a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk" from The Maltese Falcon.

Hank methodically laying out for Gomey and Merkert how Gale's murder traces back to Fring at the end of S4/E7: masterful.
