i think i ate doritos for one summer of my adolescence before i realized i'd much rather eat unflavored corn chips w/ salsa and never looked back.

when i do eat flavored chips though i tend to opt for one of the spicy ones, though, so one of those. probably the jalapeno.

I had no idea that around half of the flavors (and all of the Nacho flavors) presumably include pork (I guess as an extract in the "natural flavoring").

The plain and the Salsa Verde are the other vegan options.

The Barbecue flavored ones gave me the worst stomach cramps, I am glad they are not on this list. NEVER AGAIN.

The best I've had were the Black Pepper Jack. That's the only flavor I've ever had an active craving for.

The cheeseburger ones are creepy because they managed to pretty accurately synthesize the flavor of a McDonald's cheeseburger. But in chip form. Which is weird.

I gave in to a sudden Cool Ranch craving last year at the supermarket and bought a bag. But after about two handfuls it started to taste like some kind of cleaning chemicals, so I threw it away. I can still get with the Nacho Cheese (especially in some kinda party snack mix), but beyond that I think this is one of those things that growing up has ruined for me.

I tried the Taco Bell Doritos tacos and they were not that good.

I had a craving for the Tapatio Doritos and looked to see if anyone in the UK happened to import them. Amazon is selling them at £16.04 (or $26.24 with the current exchange rate) for a single small bag. I've paid some crazy prices to scratch home-country junk food itches before, but that would be the record if I pulled the trigger..... (don'tpullthetriggerdon'tpullthetriggerdon'tpullthetrigger)

I got some of the new(ish) Simply Doritos, the RFK-compliant ones with less food coloring in them. The White Cheddar Nacho ones are...really good. They don't taste like Nacho or Cool Ranch, they're their own thing, and they're more corny.

When I was in middle school, my friend hosted a big party in his basement. We were still very innocent at the time - it was a soda and cookies and chips kind of affair. Cool Ranch Doritos, still a relatively new item, were on the menu and their aroma pervaded the room. Not sure if they were just that strong-smelling in their bowl, or if it was because so many people were eating them, or if someone had dumped out the whole bag all over the place in a fit of tweenage hijinks. The latter would be in character for us, to be honest.

Halfway through the party though, some new guests arrived. One guy who was in the same grade and was sort of known as a juvenile delinquent, accompanied by one of our girl classmates. They sauntered down the stairs and plopped on the couch. And ladies and gentlemen, they had just smoked pot! For the girl, it was her first time, and she could not stop laughing. They instantly became the center of attention. Some of us (innocents, I tell you) were very worried about her, but she assured us she was fine in between laughing fits. For a lot of us, this was our first known encounter with someone under the influence of drugs, and we didn't really know what to do with our D.A.R.E. training.

The scent of Cool Ranch instantly melded in my mind with the vision of the stoned 13-year-olds. Even now, when a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos gets opened at a party, I think "why couldn't pot smell like this?"

i would also like to echo what the classic sci-fi reference said: cool ranch is disgusting.

For some reason, I have an insatiable appetite for Doritos. If I buy one of those big bags, I could easily finish them in one sitting - I have to make myself stop because I won't stop from being full. Anyway, it's a big reason why I very rarely buy Doritos - I think I've gotten maybe four big bags since 2020 and finished each one in like two or three days.

My partner loves cheddar and caramel popcorn mixes. Garrett popcorn in Chicago is great too, I was surprised it became a thing tourists should try when they're in town. (This was even before they opened up a vendor at O'Hare.)

in high school there was a year or so where i used to lick all the cheese off of the doritos (front and back) and then place them in a pile on the corner of my lunch tray. once lunch was over and the licked dorito stick was tall (but held together by the dank wetness of my lick, ew!) i would smoosh together the pile and eat the powderly cheese-less stack. ew!!

during this same time dorito points were a thing, and i collected them every day from the whole cafeteria to save up to trade them in for something big. i had many, many dorito points, and was getting a reputation as someone who did weird thing with doritos in multiple ways. but i missed the trade-in deadline, and threw the worthless dorito points away!

also, i noticed that 3D doritos did not get a vote. makes sense! i ate a lot of 3D doritos during this time, late 90s, and they were bad

IMO the addictive element of traditional doritos (and lots of similar scientific marvel snacks) is that the duration and/or presence of the flavor is juuuust underwhelming enough to make you try again. here the tapatio-ness lingered enough to satisfy, making them... put-downable
