Pointless is my absolute favourite. I want a I heart R O shirt the guy the was wearing yesterday.

danzig, Thursday, 5 January 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)

UC, motherfuckers. Though I'm always a bit gutted when the music round is about anything other then pop.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 5 January 2012 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

UC, tho i'm mostly gutted when the music round is about pop.

Nogood (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 09:37 (thirteen years ago)

UC. One great regret of my University years is not getting it together to try out.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Thursday, 5 January 2012 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

Pointless, by a long way.

Sugary pee is not normal (aldo), Thursday, 5 January 2012 09:48 (thirteen years ago)

UC over Pointless. Was an Eggheads stan but then I overdosed, watching it every day after work for a month or two. Mastermind is too dull if you know nothing about the specialist subjects. Million Pound Drop has far too many "which happened first" questions which always end up being a complete guess. Weakest Link has the fatal "vote the best person off" flaw.

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Thursday, 5 January 2012 09:50 (thirteen years ago)

most of these are functionally useless as quizes to play along with - too stupid or not enough questions or the presence of George Lamb stops you ever watching it in the first place.

Mastermind's longevity i think is interesting cos ledge has identified the massive flaw in the format - first half of the show used to be quite meaningless back in the day when specialist subjects were obscure. obv nowadays in the world of "the Harry Potter films but not the books cos too much work" as specialist subjects it's a bit less obscure, just dull in a different way.

Pointless is big fun, might apply at some point. The Weakest Link has the fatal "95 percent of the questions could be answered by a 10 year-old" flaw. love Only Connect, obv, and The Chase is often a decent quiz fix, just on at a wrong time. UC is head and shoulders just by sheer number of actually challenging questions within yr half hour.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

Eggheads question difficulty is pretty decent I think, a few no-brainers in there but it's actually quite tricky to beat them - yeah I used to take a running tally :/ The overwhelming annoyance factor for me ended up being the stupid contestants, I actually started to feel sorry for the Eggheads not getting a decent challenge. "You don't know that 'quid pro quo' means 'this for that'?! And you can't even work it out?" *throws shoe at TV*

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:15 (thirteen years ago)

yeah Eggheads questions are ok, they should do less multiple choice imo, main ish for me is slow pace of the show plus at least 3 Eggheads who u wdn't wanna be stuck in a lift with

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:18 (thirteen years ago)

Pointing and laughing at CJ is all part of the fun.

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:21 (thirteen years ago)

it's true he is fun to laugh at

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)

think I mentioned that an acquaintance had an OC team in the 'come and have a go' thread; in the end they won the series. V impressive to me, was just gawping at their final fill-in-the-vowels round.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:27 (thirteen years ago)

UC, because you feel smart if you get more than 10 right in any episode.

As opposed to "feel stupid because you got more than 10 wrong" in WeakestLink.

Mark G, Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:34 (thirteen years ago)

xp

yeah i remember u mentioning it woof, which series was it?

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:43 (thirteen years ago)

This one just gone - the final from last month.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Thursday, 5 January 2012 10:48 (thirteen years ago)

oh right! was it the team that didn't beat us who won the final, i can't remember now?

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:00 (thirteen years ago)

i think so - you played the Antiquarians, who lost the final to the Analysts, captained by the person I know (who also seems to be the Quiz League of London's 'Brain of London'.)

you don't exist in the database (woof), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:15 (thirteen years ago)

feel I should be amused by 'brain of london' but really i covet the title.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:16 (thirteen years ago)

xp

yeah that's right. Analysts seemed like pleasant peeps iirc

hardcore quizzers are a different breed tho, i'm happy to just watch the TV nowadays

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:17 (thirteen years ago)

Pointless by miles. My crowning achievement of 2011 was being called a clever clogs on Twitter by Richard Osman. I absolutely love it, it's my total favourite show, and the only one I'd consider going on.

I also love University Challenge and Only Connect, and am generally quite good at both.

I still like Countdown too (lol underemployed), and particularly like when Rachel can't do a numbers round and gets pwned by Jeff who is actually quite good at it. I await the Nick Hewer era with some trepidation.

Mastermind can fuck off and get a new presenter. I hate Humphrys on it with a passion - he keeps laughing at things and being annoying.

They should totally bring back 15 to 1 though. That was the daddy.

ailsa, Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

Saw Humprheys being ultra-annoying on Celeb Mastermind, if he's like that on the normal one too then ugh for sure. And he says "yes" not "kolekt".

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:33 (thirteen years ago)

15 to 1 was hardcore, true. Humphrys is a terrible host, his "so, your specialist subject was the life of Colley Cibber, do you like Colley Cibber?" shtick is agony

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:33 (thirteen years ago)

xps

yeah, i occasionally encounter the hardcore & that just isn't me. I am fascinated by their twilight world of sitting around pub tables, but I don't think I could join it.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:34 (thirteen years ago)

Never seen "Pointless"! Have only watched Mastermind a couple of times since Humphreys + dumbing way down occurred. Univ. Chall. is unassailable imo.

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)

Bear in mind Mastermind is wayy easier if "Celebrities" are involved, particularly for Round 2.

Mark G, Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:58 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I saw some of that, celebs are thickos.

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

Went for Only Connect, UC and Pointless also great though.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:59 (thirteen years ago)

1. University Challenge
2. Mastermind
3. Pointless

University Challenge and Mastermind are top because they're the best pure quizzes (although i pretty much ignore the specialist subject rounds on Mastermind). Pointless has a nice concept but it's just too slow moving. It was interesting to see the difference in speed on the recent Christmas editions of UC, i'd say they got through about half as many questions due to the doddery nature of some of the contestants. Agree with the 15 to 1 love, just a load of questions and and no bullshit.

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:05 (thirteen years ago)

(xp) I missed that one! You know the actor Paul Bradley (he's in Holby City at the moment)? I used to occasionally do pub quizzes with him and he did the Life and Work of Captain Beefheart and got *ONE question wrong, I didn't let him live that one down.

(*Who was the Alex in the Beefheart song, "Owed t' Alex". Jesus what a howler!)

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:08 (thirteen years ago)

(Had to look it up, was thinking "who *else* could it be?" (ans: nobod else)

Mark G, Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

i like the fact tom d is pals with nigel from eastenders

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

The questions may have been dumbed down on Celeb Mastermind, but Humphrys' annoyance levels exactly the same.

I don't think I've got a single general knowledge question wrong on this entire run of Celeb Mastermind. I've done pretty well on most of the specialist rounds too - they are way too general to be considered to be purely for experts on the subject.

ailsa, Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

I remember Myleene Klass was on one time an her specialist subject was "Season 3 of Sex and the City". I've often wondered what kind of restrictions there are on your choice for that round.

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

when the proper series was first resurrected under Humphrys there was a woman who took "the Harry Potter movies" as her specialist subject. I think there were 3 of them at the time. did the stress.jpg

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

tho i remember a documentary many moons ago when Magnus Magnusson was still doing it and one of the setters said that the narrower the subject a competitor chose, the more likely they were to get hyper-obscure questions about it, whereas a relatively broad specialist subject usually got relatively shallow questions

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

hooked on 'Pointless', love that show

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Myleene Klass

She got all but one question correct on her specialist round, and got all but one wrong on the General knowledge round.

Mark G, Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

ailsa is correct up above. 15 to 1 was the best.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

a friend of mine used to run 15 to 1 contests in the pub every few months. they were the best.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

My family got the Pointless board game for Christmas. The satisfaction of getting a pointless answer against your nearest and dearest is quite something.

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

idk anything about UK game shows, but is the Cube about an extra-dimensional box filled w/ rooms and each room is filled w/ death traps and a group of humans w/ different skills (math person, computer person, autistic person, politician person, old professor) are put in the box each season and filmed as they try to escape and die one by one?

Mordy, Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

close enough.

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

yeah except it's a group of humans w/ no skills

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

i hate The Cube with a vengeance btw

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

I have never seen the Cube, but it's on ITV so it's probably shit (as opposed to that Jeremy Kyle one which is *definitely* shit, even though I haven't seen it either).

I once beat that bloke who got full marks on 15 to 1 in a pub quiz once. Being recognised as a clever clogs by Richard Osman gave me a similar sense of sad bastard pride.

ailsa, Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty sure Duglas Stewart from the BMX Bandits was once on 15 to 1. Didn't do very well.

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

btw i voted pointless, and i want that Pointless game!

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Thursday, 5 January 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

bevis frond was a regular on Countdown iirc

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 5 January 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

Really? Missed that.

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 January 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

lol this is from his wiki entry:

In 1991, Nick Saloman was a contestant on the UK television station Channel 4's game show Countdown. He, other than pro footballer Neil MacKenzie, is probably the nearest the show has come to having a celebrity as a contestant outside of the occasional deliberate celebrity editions of the game. Nick has long hair. He is a supporter of Queen's Park Rangers F.C.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 5 January 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

My family got the Pointless board game for Christmas. The satisfaction of getting a pointless answer against your nearest and dearest is quite something.

OMG, this actually exists! Christmas present for the inlaws sorted already. Ta!

danzig, Thursday, 5 January 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Pointless has a high potential for annoying pricks to win annoyingly.

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Thursday, 5 January 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, tonight's guy was a smug annoying bastard. Also thought Jimmy Nail was in Reservoir Dogs. You should get money knocked off your prize fund for giving a stupid answer like that.

ailsa, Thursday, 5 January 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

Pointless would be better if they added more rounds and spent less time showing boring stuff like chatting with contestants, contestants dithering over answers, and the countdown meter dropping. None of those things needs to take up as much time as they do.

salsa shark, Thursday, 5 January 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

It used to be like that in the olden days on BBC2.

ailsa, Thursday, 5 January 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

Pointless wouldn't be the same without the chatting with contestants though. Also Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman are quite adept at it, especially compared with Anne Robinson, Davina McCall, and the absolutely painful George Lamb. I often wish there was time for Victoria Coren to chat to teams a little more, but Only Connect is lightning fast.

danzig, Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, the banter is a good part of it. Would kick it with Armstrong and Osman, def.

ailsa, Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

University Challenge over Only Connect.

I do enjoy Pointless from time to time too, mind you.

I have never heard of 'Perfection' or 'the Bank Job'.

emil.y, Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

I am upset at the lack of love for Only Connect in this thread.

"only girl in the kitchen" (boxedjoy), Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

Only Connect is cool but it's kind of its own thing. My talents lie in simple regurgitation of trivia so i prefer the shows that focus on that

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

Only Connect is v. cool but UC is the supreme ruler.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

had to turn off 'the bank job' just there. surely the worst of the list above. christ, it just goes on and on and on...

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 5 January 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

"Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" seems to be missing from the list - that's still on, isn't it?

I like The Chase. The more straight ahead general knowledge the better imo. 15 to 1 was indeed the daddy - no fucking around just question after question after question.

Pointless is ok but I'm not sure about the machinations of the "we asked 100 people" aspect - like Family Fortunes but always looking for the bottom answer. Do the 100 people asked try to give obscure correct answers or do they just rhyme off as many as they can remember? Who are these 100 people - randomers on the street? Online googlers?

Weakest Link would be good with less of the ritual between round humiliation of the working classes for not being gameshow presenters.

I hate that Eggheads presents the multiple choice answers on screen but not the questions - this stops you from being able to play it in the pub without the sound up.

I was otherwise very normal before I became (onimo), Friday, 6 January 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

The 100 people can be remarkably obtuse. Name a 20th century monarch, top answer was QEII, named by a stunning 59/100. idk maybe the other 41 got confused about which century or said "queen elizabeth" which was disallowed.

Quoth the raven "Nevermind" (ledge), Friday, 6 January 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

this is a truth bomb

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 January 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

"Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" seems to be only celebrity specials nowadays. Correct me if I'm wrong. I deliberately took those out of the list because
(a)celebs are thick, questions are too easy and they're boring to watch
(b)otherwise you get into things like All Star Family Fortunes, A Question of Sport, Buzzcocks which are not serious game shows.

danzig, Saturday, 7 January 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)

neither's Bank Job or Weakest Link tbf, but the point stands

I like Mastermind, Pointless and University Challenge. Haven't seen most of the others. Have the Pointless board game and it's brill. Here is a picture of my friends who were on Pointless and won!! Sadly some ppl won the jackpot the day before they did so instead of 12,000 some odd pounds they walked away with a respectable 3k.

I love almost all trivia (except sports and particularly questions about soccer and cricket which makes some of the pointless questions p tough for me) so I'd prob like the music quiz game tbh.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Saturday, 7 January 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

Would have easily walked away with £100k on Who Dares Wins tonight - Pointless without having to second guess 100 randomers.

ailsa, Saturday, 7 January 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't seen Pointless. More love for Only Connect here (and extra love for providing plenty of play-at-home boards online). Really, really miss UC as well.

kinder, Saturday, 7 January 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

I've noticed that when I play along with Only Connect at home I do far better if I have company to act as a team, helping me realise the connections I can't quite put together alone. Monday nights are very exciting in our house.

I can get several rounds of Weakest Link with every answer correct and think nothing of it, but I get very excited if I get anything by myself on Only Connect.

"only girl in the kitchen" (boxedjoy), Saturday, 7 January 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

unichal > oncon > pointless (haven't come up with a really cool contraction for that yet). the rest range between things i'll watch when there's nothing else on and abominations. i think i preferred the original format of pointless, the new rounds don't demand the level of ~knowledge~ i want from my tv quizzing.

who in london wants to watch / compete at quizzes with me? i have no one since i moved here. :'(

sunn :o))) (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 7 January 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

The new format of Pointless is because they are running out of finite lists to use.

ailsa, Saturday, 7 January 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

I miss the bang bang bang of Fifteen to One. My ex-husband went on it and got to the final three. William G. Stewart was extremably personable.
It's Pointless all the way for me, followed by University Challenge. Can't abide John Humphrys or Victoria Coren (unpopular, I know) so their shows are pretty much out, and there's something about the dead air of Eggheads that really puts me off it. Plus it annoys me the way they encourage everyone on it to SHOW YOUR WORKING OUT, even if they're obviously just guessing.

trishyb, Saturday, 7 January 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

danzig, Monday, 23 January 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

He's rubbish.

emil.y, Monday, 23 January 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

He's awful, yes. Pointless is the best thing on the telly.

I hate this new format on University Challenge whereby I thought we were through with that Karran chap ages ago and he keeps not flushing due to stupid endless weird round-robin thing.

ailsa, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

Any contestants who try making a joke on University Challenge should be docked 50 points. I don't understand the point of this knockout system. Are they just squeezing some extra episodes into the series or something?

Pointless is the only one of these I make any effort to watch.

oppet, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

i like the format on UC which is into at least its 3rd year just cos it means there's more shows of UC. On the other hand i wd like Karran to be eaten by Ounces yeah.

Pointless is great but got a bit silly. The here-are-all-the-answers-now-choose-one rounds are patronising.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

They have to do them because they are running out of finite lists. I do hate them though (except when I work out why a wrong answer is wrong, that's a nice wee side game).

ailsa, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 09:56 (thirteen years ago)

don't see why they can't recycle lists, i shudder to think what kind of dude wd have the entire run of the show memorised

summer sun, something's begun, but uh-oh those tumblr whites (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 10:02 (thirteen years ago)

You don't have to make much of an effort, I find. When they repeated a load of episodes of Pointless recently, I remembered a lot of the answers from the first go round, and I am by no means a quiz genius.

trishyb, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 10:20 (thirteen years ago)

There's "Memorising", and there's "remembering".

There's a lot of finite lists. Infinite, even!

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 10:48 (thirteen years ago)

I was visiting my grandparents last week and we were having dinner while watching Pointless, and when the two guys won the £7,000 maximum prize open to them they both started crying. It was bizarre and make me anxious for what they must be like watching Million Pound Drop.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 11:08 (thirteen years ago)

Has Pointless appeared on pub quiz machines yet? Not sure how the format would work but I'm getting bored of the same old shite on the itbox.

Million Pound Drop is terrible so no rush

summer sun, something's begun, but uh-oh those tumblr whites (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

Pointless couldn't work on a quizzer because it's not right or wrong answers so much as assigning a random value to right answers.

I have a pretty good return from Million Pound Drop on quiz machines though.

ailsa, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

Way more unemployed with more time.to kill, more like.

I still miss Weakest Link quiz machines. That was like free money.

They've totally changed the format of the Deal or No Deal one too, that used to be piss easy and now it isn't.

ailsa, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

i quite like the Chris Tarrant one with the coloured boxes, and i always enjoy that Around the World with That Posh Twunt one, but the other change in my habits is i play them more for the enjoyment (or not) of the particular game now rather than having particular ones i know i can smash

summer sun, something's begun, but uh-oh those tumblr whites (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, there's too fecking many of them now. Charley Boorman one (except for that pish balloon-flying game) and Blockbusters and Talksport or Match of the Day are my fallbacks. Never really been bothered learning the rules for the Tarrant one.

Now I want to go to the pub.

ailsa, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

I love the balloon flying game even tho it is impossible to go more than two gas tanks.

do you remember way back in the day the game where you had to shoot down balloons to win points? that was awesome fun and more or less money all day.

summer sun, something's begun, but uh-oh those tumblr whites (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

I can't handle the Boorman one at all. MOTD is easy money still. My local has the easy Deal too. I stopped playing the things for ages but have recently started again, tragically.

the biggest free money machines of all time for me were the early versions of Adders and Ladders and Monopoly, used to be able to play those until they were spitting air. pocket full of 10p pieces is a bit unwieldy.

When it comes to giving away cash at random to poor unfortunates then Mario Balotelli has a long way to go to compete with old school Give Us a Break machines

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

Of course, there were regional differences to Give Us a Break machines, machines in areas with high concentrations of dimwits used to pay out like nobody's business

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

the thing was that most of the earlier machines had no system for stopping you winning if they'd already paid out, they could make you answer some more questions but the jackpot was usually always reachable. plus i suspect they had much smaller question banks, and rarely used the "bullshit question so obscure that we can always tell you you've got it wrong and you've no way of knowing otherwise" technique

I really don't understand how Pointless can be that popular. I would also have thought Countdown would have garnered more votes, maybe it would have if Whiteley and Voderman could be at the helm still?

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 02:08 (thirteen years ago)

I do love Countdown, but Nick Hewer is terrible. I liked Jeff Stelling a lot, but haven't really taken to Rachel (possibly because I am not a boy).

Pointless = knowledge, geekery, hosts who delight in zinging contestants and each other. What's not to love?

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, laughing at idiot contestants is part of the fun with every show though. The good thing with Pointless is that the hosts also mercilessly take the piss out of people who say stupid things, you feel like they're on your side. I would take that any day of the week over Jeremy Kyle's patronising "that was a good guess, but it's wrong" comments on Eggheads when someone says things like "Top Gun? I've never heard of it but I think that was probably George Clooney, it's definitely not Tom Cruise".

Completely disagree. Pointless is the most genius concept in the history of trivia shows because you can continue to think about the questions during all the guff. Also Richard and Xander's interactions are gold.
