i have seen too many butt cracks and/or underwear through these tights/pants this winter.

do these people not have a full length mirror?
do they not realize that the material is stretched thinner across their back side?

Those aren't even foofy boots, but the offense is compounded by the shortness of that shirt. So as not to induce voluntary blindness in onlookers, whatever you wear over top of leggings should at least cover your crotch.

See, I like this fine if it's leggings + UGGS plus a tunic or a minidress or even a moderately baggy sweater or something. But without something long on top, it reminds me of something maybe the high school dance team would wear.

I work with a woman who is a regular and repeat offender of wearing stretched out/insufficiently opaque leggings with shirts that do not cover her hips. She also wears regular old underwear under these items so sometimes you can see panty lines or sometimes you can see actual patterns. This isn't about being on trend or whatever, though. This is just about her personal choices.

I first noticed the worn out/stretched too thin leggings thing a couple months ago on a girl in a salon. I could see her ass, thong, EVERYTHING. I was embarassed for her and sat there for about 20 mins trying to think if there was any way I could tactfully point this out because in the sun it was p much obscene. I decided there wasn't. :(

Grellow is a terrible word.

Jeggings are tighter with a very narrow leg opening--cut like leggings, styled like jeans in denim-looking fabric--whereas pajama jeans are cut like jeans but made of cotton/poly/spandex and thus stretchy and soft.

I have a pair of Levis that are made of pajama jeans-esque material and srsly they are A+++.

The thicker and more opaque leggings get, the less I hate them. I remember some years ago, though, maybe it was before the leggings "comeback"? When there weren't a lot of versions on the market yet so the young fashion things were wearing tights. As pants. This is probably where my real disdain for the whole thing comes from. And now thanks to the lazy and unobservant people described in this thread, we're right back where we started.

I don't know, some of the college girls I see near my office building put way too much effort into the rest of their clothes and accessories to really be THAT lazy and unobservant about their tights. I'm fairly certain its a distinct choice in some cases.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, I have never worn tight black leggings, but my sense is that when you put on a garment you have some vague idea of how form-fitting it is. Not to mention that you perhaps own a mirror, or have friends, or any number of other ways that you might be informed of what it is you're wearing and what it looks like. Not to say I haven't worn a few things that looked way stupider than I thought they did, but it'd be kind of hard to wear something that hugs each and every curve of flesh and not just feel that, right? Or are they so tight that they cut off circulation and shut down nerve endings? I dunno.

xpost oh okay, that makes sense then

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I think girls wear them becuase they're comfortable tbh! Not nec because they are so form-fitting specifically.

Rapper rejoins fat man's co-op (NickB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think you're right that there's a difference between "these are worn out and became see-through" and "these are really tight and form-fitting," it's just that the latter, in combination with the Uggs (and, yes, usually the long sweater) is a trend right now. So I think the people wearing it know what it looks like, having seen it in magazines/TV/friends, and are totally going for it. But I might just be rationalizing because I think it's so pretty.

But, I mean, I have long been a totally indefensible sucker for Uggs in a way that I can't explain. I think I love the incredible bottom-heavy imbalanced-ness of them, it's this awkward oversizing that I can only compare to Megaman, or maybe to just the 2000s general love of the incongruous join, the massive meeting the miniscule. It's like a LOLcat fashion.

Yes, the reason this look works with the long sweater is that there is something left to the imagination, it isn't all on display. Its like boots and big, baggy sweater are v formless but theres just this hint of shapeliness between the calves and mid-thigh that sets it all off. I just like the idea of a trend where people are into the butt curvature being expressed as a plastic, sculptural composition - the masterly, correct and magnificent play of forms in light, let's say.)

The whole leggings-with-chunky boots thing is the apres ski look, as remy noted up-thread. Those women's ski pants are/were pretty thick iirc, like practically made of neoprene or at least something that wd protect you from cold and ice-scrapes if you wiped out.

The modern interpretation uses way thinner fabrics than those things ever did.

When I last went to Austin, T and I saw endless girls wearing baby T shirts with leggings and dress shoes. It's sort of embarrassing. I worked in a University that seems to be particularly well known for its annoying students a few years ago and around 08-09 every other girl was walking around wearing tights as leggings (with nothing long over the top). They also wore PJ bottoms in the gym. I pretty much turned into my mother overnight.

I really hate the fashion industry for basically forcing me to wear leggings due to 99% of dresses in regular shops that I like being too short to wear without.

flannel pjs in public is the worst imo.
a gaggle of teen girls came into the place where I get my lunch wearing pj bottoms, uggs, tiny tank tops & with the worst birdsnested sideways bedhair...I was like "Did you come here straight from a gangbang? Jesus, put some clothes on."

that pjs and uggs thing not so much slovenliness as a pretty carefully cultivated look. on campus in the summer or fall it's usually running shorts and a sorority t-shirt with running shoes. like every. single. day.

let us marvel at these sentences:

Specially designed trousers like low-rise jeans or hip-huggers and higher cut thongs lead to greater exposure of the whale tail. The trend was also associated with the trend of sporting lower back tattoos. The word was selected by the American Dialect Society in January 2006 as the "most creative word" of 2005. The concepts of visible panty line, buttock cleavage, and sagging are closely related to the whale tail.

I like elmo's interpretation. Although for me the ponytail is more like a cartoon whale spouting water out of its blowhole.

Also, I like my ass tights (credit to Dr. Casino for that one---yes, we have talked about this IRL too) partly because they sit up at my waist unlike the horrific low-rise jeans of yore. In my defense, mine are very thick & I usually wear them with shirts long enough to mitigate crotchal awkwardness.

The Magical Breasts of Britney Spears
by: Ryan G. Van Cleave
Publication Date: April 2006
$16.95
ISBN: 1-59709-067-0

By writing so unabashedly about the glitter, the effluvia, the very Britney of contemporary American life, Ryan Van Cleave may have shortened the shelf-life of these poems, but few readers of today will be able to resist his supercharged language and unbound satirical exuberance.
-- Billy Collins, U.S. Poet Laureate 2001-2003

Anger, hunger, and desire power Ryan Van Cleave's excitable new poems, but their rudeboy force is always harnessed by a larger comic vision. Whether he's channeling King Kong, Bubbles the Chimp, or Counter-Terrorist Barbie, Van Cleave alternately throttles and embraces our less-than-perfect world, turning its wild inconsistencies to his own ends. Never cool, never shying away from the facts on the ground, these poems, like Michael Jackson's tortured Bubbles, adamantly refuse to be denied.
-- Rachel Loden, author of Hotel Imperium

Ryan Van Cleave's explosive riffs roll over the American pop culture landscape like a caffeined-up emcee from the dark side. Trying to keep up with his quick wit and dizzying leaps may leave you out of breath, but gasping with surprise and wonder, marveling at how -- beneath the glitz -- Van Cleave has found the sick, twisted soul of this country.
-- Jim Daniels, author of Show and Tell

In The Magical Breasts of Britney Spears, Van Cleave makes unforgettable music. Tuned to the frequency of the moment, this book brilliantly articulates the paradoxes of the postmodern American landscape. Anxieties, elations, grievings -- this book has it all.
-- Virgil Suárez, author of 90 Miles: Selected and New Poems

I think that if you're gonna do this the thickness is key. I see way too many ladies who don't realize that these things stretch out or wear thin and wind up just flashing their asses to the world. I get so embarrassed for them. Then again, maybe that's the look they're going for. idk.

“The truth of the matter is the only way you can actually test for the issue is to put the pants on and bend over,” Day said on today’s conference call. “Just putting the pants on themselves doesn’t solve the problem. It passed all of the basic metric tests and the hand-feel is relatively the same, so it was very difficult for the factories to isolate the issue, and it wasn’t until we got in the store and started putting it on people that we could actually see the issue.”

i like how she tries to suggest that the problem is you can't bend over and see your own butt

I was embarassed for her and sat there for about 20 mins trying to think if there was any way I could tactfully point this out because in the sun it was p much obscene. I decided there wasn't. :(

Another isolating factor can be a clash of decorating styles between roommates. Catherine Curtis, 20, a junior at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., describes herself as the cutoffs and T-shirt type. "My roommate put up a lot of foofy, frilly cat things," she says dryly. But the unlikely duo was able to find a happy medium. "I'm always pretty open-minded about people. We just gave each other a chance."

乒乓, Thursday, 7 November 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

WELL I think the idea behind Longchamps is that they're v light and crushable? Possibly they were intended as like carry-on bags or things you can pack flat in case you need more storage later. This may also be a gloss they've put on their history, but basically they're supposed to be minimalist and utilitarian. I kind of like the GIANT ones because the scale is ridiculous, you could never lift a bag that big wiht those little handles, clearly that is what servants do.

I saw the worst example of this morning. A young woman was walking around in the thinnest oldest leggings I've ever seen (with a short top/jacket) and she had, well, an extremely large and, um, interestingly shaped behind and the material was stretched so thin that you could pretty much see all of her naked ass cheeks AND HER CRACK. It was not good, it was not good at all. I know that this is not a popular opinion with some people who would say that you should wear whatever the fuck you want to wear regardless of whether or not it looks good on you but I still think there's something to be said for knowing what enhances or flatters your figure and anyway OLD STRETCHED THIN MATERIAL THAT IS PRETTY MUCH NOT COVERING SHIT IS NEVER A GOOD LOOK. It was so bad people were staring. Where are this girl's friends? Someone needs to pull her aside and give her some real talk imo. It was that bad. She was also wearing Uggs.

Nope. No an undie in sight.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Friday, 8 November 2013 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

― Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Friday, 8 November 2013 15:43 (2 hours ago)

that's a whole lot of words before you drop the uggs into it

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 8 November 2013 18:01 (eleven years ago) link

Well, obviously The Uggs were not the main issue here but I felt the need to point out that they were part of the ensemble so as not to deviate too far from the original topic at hand.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Friday, 8 November 2013 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

i'm not so sure this phenomenon is really such a great aesthetic crime in the general instance, but insofar as the asscrack-hugging rizla thin leggings were a faux pas, adding the uggs is like the eichmann prosecutors finishing off with 'and he also kicked a kitten twice', not the most heinous of the crimes but it sort of contextualizes everything else

update: sighting of ~jeans and riding boots~ at workplace

mh, Friday, 8 November 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

In high school, I used to wear black vintage '60s ski pants with lace-up black boots, huge sweaters and cardigans, but since the ski pants were thick enough to obscure VPL the sweaters did not necessarily need to cover the arse. The ski pants were ludicrously inexpensive ($10 at vintage warehouse) and made out of the same fabric as old-school jodhpurs.

Have actually been wearing a pair of Etienne Aigner riding boots for like the past five years (never with leggings, always with jeans or cabley tights/short dress), and now a small rubbed hole has appeared on the side of the toe, almost as if the fashion gods were telling me it's time to stop, lest I overlap with these boring rich people who have Anthropologie store cards.

hatcat marnell (suzy), Friday, 8 November 2013 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

I went to the outlet mall at lunch today, omg it was like a leggings + riding boots convention

One tiny girl was super cute but her boots were hilariously high, like they came quite a ways up over the knee like veering up to fishing waders height, or julia roberts pretty woman cfm boots. not quite mid thigh but nearing there

they were a cool style leather and v chill it's just that the length looked funny on her. maybe because her legs were shorter or something, idk.

I think I'm just envious of anyone who can wear over-the-calf boots because of my giant balloon calves lol

omg so envious. I remember after I first came to Canada I ended up nearly bawling in a shopping mall because I couldn't find a single pair of high snow boots that came close to getting over my calves. I had to get snowjoggers because they're short, and even then I have to wear the velcro fastenings really loosely.

Well, they're tights. 70 denier, so they aren't as hardcore as my 120 denier black tights that are really just like pants with the cuffs sewn close over the toes, but they are sufficiently opaque in the leg.

Leggings usually come in the following fabrics:

Cotton knit: Pros - no synthetics, nice colors. Cons - will sag and bag and give you dumpy butt within minutes.
Cotton spandex: Pros - mostly cotton. Usually nice and thick. Cons: black ones tend to fade quickly, there's no "slip" so if you're wearing them with a skirt, the skirt might cling to them in an unflattering way.
Modal spandex: Pros - so soft and super comfortable. Lightweight and good for summer. Cons - slight pilling, don't offer good longevity as modal (at least IME) tends to get little holes in it even if you launder it carefully.
Nylon spandex: Pros - More like thick footless tights, which some people may prefer. Cons - definitely can see your underpants through most of these.
Some kind of poly nylon spandex blend. Pros - Cheaper, lots of bright colors and patterns. Cons - the pilling and the possible running at the seams (although I have a pair of poly/spandex leggings that are made of some kind of miracle fabric so this is not universal).
Technical fabric (like running tights): Pros - Thick, come in compression styles if you like that, tend to wear really well. Cons - they look like exercise clothes.

So where you get them and how much you spend will depend on what kind you want. I own or have owned leggings from all categories and modal/spandex are probably my favorite for wearing, their fragility is such a bummer that I don't usually buy them unless they are on super sale. You mostly want to make sure they are sufficiently opaque to hide your butt if you want to wear them as pants. If you want to get fancy and spend $$$ search for something like "premium leggings."

I bought a pair of the non-fleece lined $5 Walgreens leggings the other day because the crotch on my tights ripped catastrophically and I had some walking to do and it was chilly plus chub rub and they are fine. There was a run from the crotch seam to the waistband after just one washing, but for emergency purposes, they were useful. Also even though they are "one size fits most" they actually fit me (I would have liked more rise, since tights and leggings tend to roll down on me and I hate that), although anybody much bigger than me (women's size 18 or 20) is probably going to be SOL.

Not to turn this thread back into the thread where we shill for Walgreens, but just a heads up that if you have a hosiery emergency and $5, Walgreens is there for you.

I am a big fan of this men in leggings trend. Nice work, fellas!

for def. uggs are definitely more of like a women from suburbia thing. i think. i don't know. i feel like uggs have gotten very controversial lately.

lol ballcap <3 school

surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:03 (nine years ago) link

puffy vests always make people look like an assistant at a garden centre imo, not to say that is a good or a bad thing

soref, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:06 (nine years ago) link

I go to an American college campus - but it really has faded IMO! Tight black leggings still to be seen, but the big foofy boots that tied it all together have been aggressively purged. Maybe it's an NYC thing.

I associate puffy vests - like, ski vests? - with punks and hipsters of a decade ago, scruffy folk in raggedly cut-off denim patched with band logos, stained t-shirts, and brightly colored happy ski vests. I've held onto one partly out of nostalgia for those times though I suspect it's years since I actually put the darn thing on.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

they are almost always black and archaeoptryx/patagonia/north face/some other sporting goods company brand, don't see many of the bright 80s earth tone/primary color ones. those i actually like and would wear if i had any.

charva favela (clouds), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:19 (nine years ago) link

well the thing is too that we're not really addressing is that the foofy boot is about to make a comeback in style in general. it went out for like a hot second when people got sick of the studio 54 look, but anticipate some electric gray leather foofy boots in your US Weekly sometime soon.

let's not turn this into a feminist objectification thing

i'm feeling v confident abt my own style choices lately so it's likely i'm just projecting ^_^;;

charva favela (clouds), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

in the same way that i complain about the gay male "beard + shaved sides long top hair" clone archetype it's not the thing in itself, just the repetition of seeing it everywhere that's tiring and suggests to me basic-ness

charva favela (clouds), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 16:29 (nine years ago) link

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 16:40 (nine years ago) link

And FYI your feminist cred association card doesn't mean shit in light of comments like "let's not turn this into a feminist objectification thing" after women post mild protests re: your critique of women's public presentation.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link

No doubt! But this isn't gay guys v. women in the objectification sweepstakes. This is two women very, very gently calling out dudes who they know and like for judging women's appearance in a way that they found to be uncool, and one of those dudes being very... interesting in response.

I mean, maybe take LL and my comments as the gift they are meant to be instead of jumping right to "oh no angry feminists are getting their black leggings in a twist just calm down ladies," which is a way worse look than Uggs and puffy vests or whatever the sartorial issue was.

clouds you didn't say boring -- unsexy and frumpy! it's not fair to tell me i'm overreacting when i respond to precisely that -- all i said was that maybe they don't want to attract attention and they are choosing nagl on purpose. i wore a lot of overalls just so people would see me as a walking talking paper bag until they bothered to get to know me. unfortunately, the repellent of overalls was exceptionally strong.
