Some people to pin dumb stuff but I use mine mostly for the same things that Tyler's wife does namely recipes, craft and style stuff.

― no more mr. nice girls (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 11 January 2012 00:34 (fourteen years ago)
What?! lol, no. We've talked about it elsewhere. Some people do pin things that are idiotic and there is some weird religious stuff that creeps up sometimes but that's the case with the internet in general, right? I just find it handy to have everything in once place. I like the visual aspect of it as well. I've also found some really great things that others have pinned. I don't actually use it all that much but I like it when i do.

btw i legitimately do not understand this site, afaict it's basically a skin for facebook that just shows you pictures of stuff?
― call all destroyer, Friday, 3 February 2012 04:06 (thirteen years ago)
huh, no
You pin stuff to different "boards" so that you can go back to them later. Recipes, craft stuff, clothes etc. The pictures all link back to the site where they originated so you can get more info. You can repin others things but there is also a button that you put in your bookmarks that you use to pin anything from anywhere on the net to one of your boards.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 3 February 2012 04:12 (thirteen years ago)
eh, windows is basically a skin for DOS that just shows you pictures of stuff, and that's done pretty well
― his hands are a dirty fountain through which lives spurt (contenderizer), Friday, 3 February 2012 04:14 (thirteen years ago)
If you see something you want to pin you hit that button and this is what happens. All the images on the page pop up and you can select which ones you want to pin. It'll then link back directly to that site so you can revisit it later. So I guess it's sort of like visual bookmarks that you can organize and access easily?

― wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 3 February 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)
But I guess that's because I never comment on stuff or read people's comments. I just use it because the visuals help me remember things that I want to come back to. That thing linked to above is hilarious.

The Bible verses appearing most frequently on Pinterest, then, speak directly to the human vices parading past in the same space. What are those vices? The chocolate cakes and the beautiful bodies on display speak to gluttony and lust, but I would argue that these natural desires of the flesh are benign most of the time, even beautiful in their best forms. The real temptation of Pinterest, I would suggest, is the lure of an imaginary identity, a Pinterest-self for display only, a profile created entirely by the visual consumption of images rather than imaginative production. Look at my hip fashion sense, look at the sophistication of my imaginary home, look at the expensive shoes I found, look at the perfection of my hair, look at the decadence (or the virtue) of my recipe.Self-fashioning in full view of others, free from the constraints that discipline our desires in the real world, can become an exercise in prideful status-seeking. A recipe for oreo-wrapped-in-cookie-dough-covered-in-brownie-batter may be a crime against good taste and cardiovascularity, but my mocking re-pin is the sin. The Pinterest-self is a self on display, not a self in relation, and therein lies the vice. Therein, too, lies insecurity and crippling anxiety, because an identity based entirely on the display of images—actual images or metaphorical "image"—is inherently fragile, vulnerable to attack from every corner. Thus the Bible verses reassuring our anxious Pinterest-selves that our true identities are known and valued by God, and exhorting our status-seeking Pinterest-selves to replace envy with love.

idg the pinterest hate - it's just a way of visually bookmarking stuff, e.g. i pinned a whole bunch of spectacle frames, so when i feel like buying a pair i'll just go to my 'spectacles board' and i can see all the ones i've liked, at a glance. same with clothes or shoes, and it's REALLLY good for visually bookmarking gift ideas - just tooling round on the internet i see a lot of cool ideas for presents for various ppls and this way i have a board of those ideas, rather than a bunch of links that i have to click through to remind myself what they are.
there is a ton of really lame pins/pinners, like the bible verses and 'jokes', but you don't actually have to look at other ppl's pins, and you can choose to follow certain people, or just view certain categories.
why am i trying to sell you all on this

I had a board for when I was shopping for glasses. It was really helpful.
I also really like that you can un-follow individual boards, so I don't have to worry about spamming people that are uninterested in any particular subject I'm obsessing over. And then I can follow people that are interesting but avoid their boards that are devoted to inspirational quotes or what have you.

big discussion with the ladies in the office about why not use tumblr if you're just collecting images? they say it's more like facebook than a blog.
i thought as an internet editor who met his wife though the internet, i knew about the internet, but I don't.
we also talked about why it's just ladies and to be a complete misogynist, I think it all boils down to women be shopping.
No dude will ever see a carburetor or shotgun and think, Oh, let me just pin this to my board.
― pplains, Saturday, 3 March 2012 01:04 (thirteen years ago)
Why I have a pinterest account but not a tumblr account: tumblr confuses me, I don't like the lack of attribution for images, I can't follow conversations on it, I don't want to have conversations with people on the internet, I don't want a website, I just want a place to keep pictures I like.
― carl agatha, Saturday, 3 March 2012 01:07 (thirteen years ago)
See, as the creator of a tumblr site every six months, I don't get that. You can always find an image's root - for the most part. I don't have to interact with the people who come across my site. I've got tags out the wazoo if I'm looking for an image I saved or posted. I don't always have the Amazon BUY NOW link hooked into it, but I'm not really missing that either.

I have to say only ILX would spark my interest enough to return to something I found so lame the first time.
After all, it was ILX that sent me to a dolphin porn site. Is it ILX or just what happens to people past 1am who suffer from insomnia?

The images function as links to the original site. So, for instance, if I pin a pic of a recipe I can go back to that pic and click on it to be taken to the original site for the recipe. Justine otm. I find it pretty useful and have actually seen less and less religious stuff which I just sort of ignore anyway. My username is just enbb btw.

RE: Laurel's article link.
Dismissing pinterest because it skews female is bad business sense. One should be checking into IPO options for pinterest because it's becoming so popular.
Any dismissal of the site that I've made is more because it closely resembles tumblr to me (i haven't actively used pinterest though) and that I don't see any reason why I would use it. To poo-poo it just because it's a girly site is really missing the forest for the trees.
I did say it's popularity among females is great because "women be shoppin'". Just being flippant around you friends with that phrase, but it is true. Women have led the way in e-commerce, from turning Amazon from an online book store to an everything store, to making billionaires out of eBay founders. If you're wondering why Apple is a $500 billion business, remember that it's revolution began ten years ago with key lime pie-colored computers.
No one has accused me of anything and I'm not excusing myself. It's just that I read an article like that and feel like I'm more part of the problem than the solution by slagging off some girls' cupcake scrapbook. I'm thinking of ways now that I would use it. Maybe for example, when I'm cruising the realtor sites and find cool houses or silly backyards, I can pin them to a board for later. I would never bookmark that sort of thing on delicious or go through the trouble of making a new tumblr post each time. God help me when I start looking for a car again.
Of course, I'll have to do it under a pseudonym. I don't want anyone thinking I've gone fag or nothin'.
― pplains, Sunday, 4 March 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)
I feel sort of almost bad about the timing of that post, pplains. I read the article a few days ago but couldn't remember where, meant to post it to this thread for a while but didn't get around to it. Turned out it was p topical, though.
― drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Sunday, 4 March 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
it's not just some girl's cupcake scrapbok tho - it has potential to become a massive social network built on object fetishization and consumption. if it were nothing but dudes w/ pictures of cars and computers and idk whatever dudes buy it would deserve the same skepticism.
― iatee, Sunday, 4 March 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)
I don't disagree with that at all...and lots of home design/style blogs or sites are the same (Apartment Therapy & Co, just for instance). But pinterest has been written of more dismissively b/c of the decor & clothes & recipes & Mormon scrapbooking angles.
― drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Sunday, 4 March 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
yeah I can see that being true and it's hard to avoid the issue when the site's demographic is so skewed.
but when pinterest does monetize - and it's got a more natural path towards that than any social network so far - it's not gonna be the cookie recipes or bible quotes that turn this into a billion dollar company. (I'm projecting, it could also end up being a fad)

"there’s an implication that serious content can’t be found on the site because it’s solely a storehouse for images people like."
That's unrelated to the gender issues, and is also a fair implication IMO.
A lot of Tumblr is just people reposting memes, sure, but there are enough people using it for photo-blogs or short text blogs that it has a veneer of being largely original content.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Sunday, 4 March 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)
Kind of veering into MAN BRANDS territory here, but I'm always disappointed in the lack of gender-neutral craft/DIY stuff there is out there. Since Readymade shut down, it skews heavily female except for Make Magazine (I don't want to build a robot) or old man New Yankee Workshop stuff. As a guy, I'd like a magazine/blog that's somewhere in between dull as nails woodworking (BUILD A HOME ENTERTAINMENT CENTER IN A WEEKEND) and Knitting Monthly.

xp to myself: TBF, the first thing you'll get if you're violating somebody's copyright is a C&D letter, the logical response to which is to delete your pins, so it's not like you're going to be sued for all of your monies right out of the gate for using Pinterest willy nilly.

― Jeff, Sunday, 4 March 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)
I guess I'm completely behind, almost all of my friends have a pinterest, even ones i thought surely this guy isn't doing this. I have my bookmarks well organize by topic and then subtopics, just don't see why I need this.
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 4 March 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)
because links are just words and you have to click on each one separately to see the image, while a pinterest board is a pic for each link and you can see them all on one page?
― just1n3, Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)
So if a blog I 'pin' on my board updates then the image will refer me back to the old post?
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)
Or does pinterest auto update links?
Okay pplains, I've read what you have to say and it makes sense.
I couldn't sleep so I was skulking around pinterest...again 2nd night. Seem to be as many guys as girls on there and that did surprise me. Guys preferring to pin drink recipes, books to read, bikes, artwork with purty women for their pads and honestly what's wrong with a guy just really loving a certain couch.
It isn't for me because I have no house thing going on. Traveling around the country, living here and there, nesting is in the mind more than in an actual structure. So I figured that is why it makes absolutely no sense to me as a useful tool. I can see it for homeowners, renters soon to be homeowners.
There totally is a lack of manly diy/craft. There were tons of magazines that catered to men back in the 50's and 60's. Titles escaping me now but my grandfather had them in his work room. I wanted him to build me what was essentially a small bar hidden as a picture frame that hung on your wall. It would open and a small table would fold out revealing shelves for bar supplies. I thought it would make a cool place to color and store my crayons and markers.
This project looks cool: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRACTICAL-HOUSEHOLDER-NOVERBER-1960-/280835409955?pt=UK_Collections_Lots_Books_EH&hash=item4163184823#ht_500wt_1196
― *tera, Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
well it's not really intended for stuff like that. as i mentioned above, it's best for bookmarking image-specific things, like pplains idea for pinning real estate listings while you look for houses is really good. and like i said, one of my boards is for glasses, so i can see all the frames i like at a glance, rather than having to click through dozens of links for a specific one, just bc i can't remember the style number. xp
tera, you can use it anyway you want. you don't have to be a homeowner or a nester. you don't have to only pin craft things or household items.
― just1n3, Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
JS - I don't think you really get how it works because as far as I understand it this "So if a blog I 'pin' on my board updates" doesn't make any sense.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)
I guess I don't, but I only shop for records online, not much else and most of my online activity is music related, reading blogs and looking up info about an artist.
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)
OK, so here's a way you might use it for that. Let's say there were some records you were eyeing up but gor whatever reason you were not ready to buy them yet. You could have a "records" board where you would pin images of those records as visiual reminders of things you had been thinking about purchasing. When you visit the board later clicking on an image of a record would take you back to the site you pinned them from.
I find it really helpful for recipes in that way. I am making something tonight that I pinned months ago. I had completely forgotten about it but seeing it there this morning reminded me and renewed my interest in making it. I used to use a bookmarks folder called "recipes" for this but I would often forget about it. Also, I find the visual aspect really handy. And like that I can see others ideas for recipes and pin those for later reference.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Sunday, 4 March 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)
I could make a library list since as soon as I walk in there, my mind goes blank.
I could use Goodreads for that, but Good Lord, Goodreads people.

See, I can totally understand boards for art, clothes, house stuff. Those things are clearly visual, and pictures of them instead of text links make sense. But for recipes I don't quite get it. Like, if you have a chocolate cake and a chocolate carrot cake and a vegan chocolate cake - you have to make sure you remember which one is which, whereas if you have a text link you can put that pertinent information there.
And for records you want to buy? Well again, you're better off having the text, because you usually remember a band name more than the album cover. Although! I had an idea to hold an album covers themed fancy dress party and pinterest seems like it could be great for that - put all of the ones you think are good ideas/cool looks on one board.
How many wags have a Harold Pinter pinterest board?

You put a caption on each image so you could label an image say "Vegan Chocolate Cake from veganrecipesfuckingshityeahfuck.com" or whatever. Or "Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight, red vinyl SWEET."
― carl agatha, Sunday, 4 March 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

Thing is, I'll post it to my misc board and next thing I know, my email's blowing up with a bunch of pinterest people sharing it all over the goddam place.
AND, they're not getting that my pictures are meant to viewed with IRONY not SINCERITY.

I turned off all my followers etc so that I could build some boards first and figure out the place in peace and quiet, and then once I get the the hang of how it works, or find some pinned stuff worth showing the world, turn it all back on again.
Basically just go into setttings and say no to everything.

I think the ppl who run the show are pretty heavy handed w/ moderation as far as that kind of content goes. As long as it's surviving as a business model w/out porn, they'll probably keep it up.
I remember reading about some kerfuffle in which somebody pinned something with a curse word on it, for example.

Recipes are what chased me away from Pinterest.
― the new dire homonormativity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)
I sort of like the unfiltered nature of the recipes because you get interesting things like fettuccine alfredo made with Greek yogurt, parm cheese, and chicken broth (made that one, it was delicious) or a nifty how to on frying tofu mixed in with obscene casseroles that involve rice, chicken and cream cheese and cream of chicken soup and cheese and mayonnaise and sour cream.
I would like to filter out anything religious or anything related to dieting/fitness, the latter never being anything more interesting than what we've all been reading in women's magazines since time immemorial. Oh and stupid inspirational quotes. Also right wing nonsense.

Same here - most of the people I know who are on it are women.
This is a concern:
How do I block users from following me?
Right now, we don't have a block function. However, it's a feature that we know is important and that we're working on. Thanks so much for the suggestion and for your patience!
There are a couple people who I really don't want pestering me who are overdue to come along and muck up my precious bards with their UTTERLY INANE and COPIOUS comments, just like they did on my FB and Flickr until I managed them.
― ٩(-̮̮̃-̃)۶ (Je55e), Saturday, 11 August 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
yeah it's kind of annoying that i feel obligated to follow certain ppl who follow me, even if i'm not interested in any of their boards. i'd like the option to 'follow' but not ~actually~ follow ppl.
― just1n3, Saturday, 11 August 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)
Yeh, that too. It's not like on FB or Twitter where you can follow them but hide them. Regardless, I love using it as a bookmark site - it's so much easier to browse images than words! But I must remember to maintain text, too b/c it's easy to let things get way out of hand.

― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 11 August 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
You can, yeah.
Jesse, I think your best bet is to be as anonymous as possible so these jerks can't find you. Change your picture, don't connect it to Facebook. Just make it a stand alone thing.
It turns out I approach Pinterest like I do Pandora stations with lots of heartless curation, mostly because I'm indifferent to the social aspects of the site and, kind of surprisingly, it makes me really happy to see all the pretty pins.

See but the thing is, you can use Pinterest and dedicate all of your boards to just Godinteresting things, or just Interesting. Man. Things. You only follow boards that encompass those interests and those are the only "pins" you'll ever see. You don't need an entirely separate app/site unless your faith/interests are so fragile that the possibility of a Satanic or girly (SAME THING AMIRITE FELLAS) pin coming into your line of vision would destroy the very foundation of who you are.
Anyway, brb, signing up for Godinterest.co.uk to troll the squares.

I've been enjoying it quite a bit lately, but it does take some effort. I like fashion, but my fashion searches turned up a lot of hooker clothing and shoes.
