We have moved ILX to Amazon servers and need to raise cash to pay for the hosting. Unlike previous years, we don't have a set target -- we'll buy a server to fit a budget based on however much we raise. We're also paying for bandwidth separately, so it's harder to put an exact figure on how much we'll need.
A rough estimate, based on usage so far, is that for a year's costs, $1200 should see us OK, with a server big enough to run ILX at its present size. $1500 will give us some breathing room. $2100 will get us up to a larger size server with room to grow.
(Also, would like to say thank you very, very much to everyone who has donated in previous years, and thanks in advance to everyone who donates now. It has always amazed me how quickly these things go, and makes me grateful I get to be part of it)

xp to more serious topics, I believe that is the problem--that if we keep money around, we have to pay taxes on it or become a charity or something. As long as it's one-time fund drives up to a specific amount for a specific purpose, and no money is pocketed/saved, I think it avoids legal trouble.

could ilx partner up with an existing non-profit?I know non-profit art groups are allowed to distribute funds to other groups or clubs, like say if a group of people wanted to do a stage production of Crank 2, you could donate to the established non-profit, and they could pay for the production, because it falls under their mission of promoting the arts.

if there was ever to be real surplus cash i'd want to spend it on stuff for here, like maybe paying to get an android app thrown together, or some fancy-schmancy css theme that still looked like it was from 1994 except with a gradient here and a rounded edge there, or some better ways of sharing (legal!) files posted by users.
