a - :D b - That's definitely an element of it and what makes it slightly uncomfortable for me even though I do enjoy it. I spoke about this a little bit in whatever thread BH was first brought up in.

i don't really ever laugh at BH Ideas. i just think it's really sublime. it's ppl doing ppl stuff (like esp all those dozens of vanity photo galleries he posts) but doing it awkwardly thru this internet thing that is pretty new by human standards. like, ppl posting on ilx and presumably reading BH Ideas (lolhipsters) have learned to present themselves in certain artificial ways on the internet - to tailor their identities - which is why they all think they're social media experts (and also why that claim is so lol). but there's something really honest about not having that kind of expertise - like this lacuna of tech/human hybrid the uncanny gap where they don't quite meet. i think that's what he is really doing.

i can kind of see that, but "vanity photo galleries" on the internet aren't really any different than people dressing or talking or acting a certain way in real life. some people do things that other people see as "doing it awkwardly" and regardless of whether we're mocking, sentimentalizing or artifying this kind of "something really honest", what we're really doing is identifying otherness.

implied stance = "these ugly, fat, poorly educated rubes may be awkward, but look, there's something very true and honest in their strange behaviors." and frankly, as art, most of this shit just doesn't pass muster. grandma moses' paintings are remarkable not just because they're awkward and honest, though they are, but because they're unique and powerful, and because she really dedicated something to them. i just don't see any difference between this and some imaginary coffee-table book of "white trash living rooms" that you might find for sale at urban outfitters.

hell yeah, and the issues there are similar and very tough to sort out

one of the big differences is that to the extent that the artists are alive and working, sale their work benefits the artists themselves, and the artists have at least some hand in controlling the way their work is framed.

but yeah. have even bigger qualms about "native art" as an industry.

and the big difference between this and hipster studies is that hipster studies are engaged in primarily by hipsters. the appeal isn't the recognition of the other, it's the recognition of the self. it's anti-othering. was thinking abt this while watching portlandia the other day. a lot of the appeal of the show is that it reassures you that you are the sort of person who would get the jokes, it makes you feel "inside".

There's almost more commentary on Facebook itself than there is on the actual people featured in their own gallery. The repetition of images. The way they get posted sideways. I don't doubt the sincerity of the people. But the way the medium arranges them awkwardly and how you can see where they backed up and tried again, that's what is so intriguing to me.

I doubt anyone's calling Mitt Romney ugly, fat (or certainly poor), but his post is one of the funniest.

I'm no hipster. In fact, some of these could have come from my neighborhood. Humor is built upon laughing at someone else's pratfalls, but that's why I'm not really laughing at some of these.

i get that mordy, and i do appreciate it, appreciate at least the attempt. it would be easier for me to get on board w BHI if the featured players weren't so obviously oblivious to the way their "work" is being framed, if their obliviousness weren't so essential to the project. understand that it's not all old/fat/poor/"weird"/"dumb" ppl, but that does seem to be a major thread.

to the extent that BHI is produced by and enjoyed by people who seem to value "getting it" and "seeing thru the surface", it raises a flag in my mind. but i'm overstating my case. a lot of what dude finds is really compelling, at least as isolated from its "proper" context. and yeah, at its best it does have a weird sort of simultaneously universalizing and self-othering effect, like "holy shit, we are such strange things." not they, but we.

maybe it's the divided nature of the project that bugs me. the "secretly laffin at internet weirdos" angle takes something away from the more sublime pieces, and the art posturing (which may be projected onto BHI by others, i dunno) makes the redneck lols more offensive than they would be otherwise. it all does remind me v strongly of early noise board stuff.

i don't think it's incidental that when he started letting hipsters in they started to infect the quality of the work. not bc they're bad but bc he let the 'secretly laffin at internet weirdos' stuff inside where before it was at best just a paratext and really just one particular response to the work. now it is becoming harder to divide and that at least partially accounts for the super shitty arm-writing campaign. look at all the hipsters play along!
