I actually kind of get bored by parades, but I wouldn't mind sitting up on a dias with a shotgun and every time I fired off around the people in parade would have to cheer and throw their hats in the air. Then I would sell their hats in ebay.

Okay, fine: Free speech is overrated and I would like to be the fascist in charge of what is and isn't okay. Step one: burn reddit to the ground. Step two: send dog-whistle racist/misogynist politicians to gulags in the fetid swamps of southern Florida.

carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

Ok, I'm honestly very serious about environmental regulations and companies being strong-armed into cleaning up after themselves and would be a total dictator about it.

But since I'm sure most everyone agrees with that, my contribution to our new fascist ilxorland would be enforced American (& state) flag display. Flags are pretty fascist right? I fucking love flags and now you're gonna fly 'em!

does anyone have any real solution as far as what to do with chronic rapist/abuser types? i don't. jail for life? death? penis-ectomy? i've looked at the sex offender list in our town - and shuddered when i see people that i see all the time on the street - and you get stuff like this:

03/23/2000, RAPE AND ABUSE OF CHILD
03/23/2000, INDECENT ASSAULT AND BATTERY ON CHILD UNDER 14 YEARS OF AGE
03/07/1996, RAPE AND ABUSE OF CHILD
03/07/1996, RAPE AND ABUSE OF CHILD

close (almost) all tax loopholes. a certain portion of everything anyone makes/earns goes to taxes, period. taxes should be steeply progressive, but no matter how much anyone makes, i'd cap them at abt 50%.

as others have said, fund all schools equally. ok w private schools tho.

anyone who can't pay gets free, single-payer basic healthcare simply as a reward for existing. same with basic food/clothing/shelter stuff. otoh, there should be systems by which those who receive such things and are unemployed work on behalf of the gov't, to the extent that they're able and there's a legit need.

gov't should sink TONS of money into R&D in every industry. and should forcibly wean us of our dependence on petroleum.

people should basically be forced to live in cities to the extent possible. single family homes and cars are a cancer, and the government should do everything possible to reduce our dependence on such things.

gov't should regulate the hell out of banks and other financial institutions and strongly limit market speculation.

zachylon, legalization of a drug doesn't require it to be unregulated. I imagine that heroin, if it became legal, would be treated more as a state monopoly than as an ordinary consumer product, with colorful packaging, a dozen flavors, and glossy full-page brand-driven magazine ads.

people who die from use of the drug are just a small piece of the problem

iatee, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:08 (thirteen years ago)

i'm all for legalizing drugs and using tax proceeds to fund free rehab for anyone who wants it. which sounds crazy but its better than the body count/generations in prison/corrupt for-profit jail/police seizure racket going on now.

scott seward, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:08 (thirteen years ago)

FYI, FMLA leave only applies to companies with over 50 employees and to employees who have worked a certain number of hours in the past 12 months (works out as roughly part time). So no dice if you work for a small company or if you can't get enough hours or got pregnant right after you started working. And as it's for all medical leave, if a woman has a complicated pregnancy and needs bed rest for the last month, for example, she's already used up 1/3 of it before that baby is even born.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

yes if drugs were legalized free rehab would have to be a big part of it, but again, american govt -- there is too massive a section of our political spectrum who would demand that free rehab be cut in favor of tax cuts to the rich. nothing is set in stone.

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:13 (thirteen years ago)

xp Despite all that, it's still one of our better employment laws because a employee can sue for triple damages of she can show that an employer willfully violated the act. :|

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

xp

just need to be sure you understand that people will continue to use drugs of all sorts, regardless of legality or not, ease of access or not, free rehab or no rehab, or whatever song and dance society attempts to use to control drug use. people have always used drugs. every culture has its approved or tolerated drugs. whenever new drugs become available in a culture, no matter how dangerous, that drug finds new users. the only relevant question is not how to stop people from killing or harming themselves with drugs, because you can't do that (except as a goal you will often fail to achieve) but how do you keep the damage down to the smallest social cost.

hating that drugs foul people up and ruin their health and dull their minds is not a position on what to do about that. Legalizing, at its very root, means you stop regulating drug use by treating users as criminals and locking them in prisons. After you accept that idea as sensible, then you can try to construct a different approach to minimizing the social cost of drugs... or else you can stick with making criminals out of users.

Cosy Moments (Aimless), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

as i said, i am against the drug war. i don't believe in the lock-everyone-up philosophy. i don't think that that is the answer. i also don't think that full legalization, even well-regulated legalization is the answer. i don't know the answer. policy isn't something i think about, i only think about where drugs are in my life and the part they play. we disagree, but can we at least agree that there are more than these two black and white options you're assuming i consider?

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

i'm just sick of industry and government making money off of misery. billions spent on keeping the drug war alive. in my fascist state the government doesn't make money off of addicts or dealers or cartels or the mob. it can take the revenue generated from taxed legal product though.

I'm kinda for the Judge system in Mega City One. If someone is witnessed commiting an act of physical or sexual violence, that person is summarily executed. Orrrr maybe just sterilized. Maybe we can weed the better part of that shit out in a few generations.

Any televised news must be like C-SPAN (i.e. no flashy graphics, music, movement of the camera). National political candidates are allotted, say, five debates and five town hall-style meetings in this format. All other campaigning/coverage/expenditure of political monies is illegal. Term limits are eliminated. Probably some more iron fist regulations I haven't considered yet.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 04:41 (thirteen years ago)

lol, just being fascist

idk either tbh. or if it's better. but my fascist impulse is that not everyone is really cut out for 'higher learning' and so it's a big waste to try to jam everyone through it.

you'd need a really serious moon-shot national effort to overhaul elementary ed, and to really track kids into and out of the right places. educational privilege must be broken, but that does mean a lot of kids not going to arizona state anymore etc

cap executive compensation for any company receiving any sort of aid, subsidy, grant or tax break. companies may be eligible for such things, but only if they cap salaries at (say) 1M/year, all bonuses, benefits and perks included. which might sound like a lot, but relative to what many CEOs and top execs make nowadays, it's a pretty drastic cut.

I'm "fascist" about driving. Drinking and driving, bad driving. Pull them all over, punish them, ticket them. I can't stand when people get aggressive because I'm driving near the speed limit. Smoking....you don't have the right to smoke in someone else's property. Quit whining about not being able to smoke in a restaurant / bar. However, I think you have the right to smoke outdoors.

Stadium funding...this is an interesting question. Again, I think sport is an important part of culture, history and economy. It's a shame that sports culture is obnoxious sometimes.

โตเกียวเหมียวเหมียว aka Trucks of my Tears (Mount Cleaners), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

In ancient Rome, the Colosseum was state funded to the extent that all entrance was free but where you were allowed to stand was governed by your position in society. So, a bit of one side and a bit of the other.

Then again, it was all killing and murder etc.

Except on Wednesdays, that was indie night.

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

Stadium funding...this is an interesting question.

Not really. Economically, it's been shown in pretty much every single case (at least in the US) to be an absolute losing proposition for the taxpayers. These teams can more than afford to build these stadiums on their own, and they should. (I say this while looking out my office window at Browns Stadium, built at a cost of $283 million, most of it tax money, used perhaps a dozen, dozen and a half times a year and otherwise taking up 31 acres of rare non-industrial lakefront property.)

This book is essential reading on this topic.

I HAVE ONE I HAVE ONE

* pedestrians who think you should move or slow down for them because they got in front of you should be herded into a holding pen and not released until 10am.
* on third offense they will be banned from public spaces during rush hours, morning and evening.

one little aioli (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

No, people putting non-recycling in. We don't (I think) have redeemable recycling, so once stuff goes in the bin it stays there - if that's what you're asking about?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

Ahhhh. I see.

getting good with gulags (beachville), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

But what is recycling vs. non-recycling varies from place to place. I can recycle stuff in my curbside bin that my parents can't one county over. I would worry about if a sniper were to transfer between jurisdictions that there might be a tragic mix-up.

getting good with gulags (beachville), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

Ah, peds that hurry to get in front of you also walking, then slow down.

If you wanted so much to walk in front, you have to walk faster than me. Or exactly the same speed, ok.

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

oh, gotcha laurel. i'm a non-driver pedestrian person, too, but i don't have much trouble with other pedestrians. hate bike ppl on the sidewalks tho. if you wanna be on the sidewalk, walk your bike. otherwise, heavy truncheon blows.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

okay, this is true. plus people who stop in the middle of an obvious thoroughfare to chat or arrange the baby or w/e. up against the wall.

also, as an american, i'm kinda fascisty about "keep right". stick to the right-hand side of the sidewalk, take the right-hand staircase or doorway. this leaves the other lane open for traffic in the other direction. most folks seem to instinctively get this, but the outliers could stand culling.

TOTALLY feeling the car fascism. Getting a driver's license should be very difficult and entail a broad display of knowledge and prowess on the part of the potential licensee. Policing of the roadways should be ramped way the eff up. Speed limits are eliminated, but almost all other infractions (most definitely including the treatment of pedestrians as an impediment to arriving at your destination a whole five seconds sooner, you poor inconvenienced widdle wamb you) result in the lifetime revocation of your license. Cracking down to this extent would solve SO MANY PROBLEMS (severely reduced vehicular injuries and fatalities, severely reduced pollution, severely reduced reliance on oil, a sharp increase in access to and quality of public transportation, decreased sprawl, a general uptick in health and wellness, etc., etc., etc.) and seems like such a great idea that I'm certain nothing like it will ever happen in my lifetime.

Also: as an american, i'm kinda fascisty about "keep right" = SO OTFM. Enforce it with cattle prods, if necessary.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 4 October 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago)

Cyclists jumping red lights.
Cyclists riding on the pavement when they shouldn't.

As a cyclist myself I'm pretty fascistic abnout other cyclists behaving badly and sullying our collective name actually.

Cyclists not having lights.

I got the Boyzone, I got the remedy (ledge), Thursday, 4 October 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago)

As a cyclist it cracks me up to see cyclists sweating/policing the behavior of other cyclists, and worrying about them "ruining it for everyone" or whatever, in ways that drivers never do. The 10 best drivers I know are still 10,000x the danger to themselves and others than the 10 worst cyclists.

go cry, lycra boy

DG, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago)

I'm kind of the same about motorists and pedestrians, actually. Basically, everyone on the highways should behave exactly the fuck like me.

Well, yeah.

Tom Hardy & the Batbreakers (Phil D.), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:09 (twelve years ago)

wear all black, no lights, in the rain, blowing through stop signs

yeeeeeeeah

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:11 (twelve years ago)

ten worst cyclists i know are a considerably greater danger to themselves, at least, than the ten worst drivers are to others.

Evolution in action.

Tom Hardy & the Batbreakers (Phil D.), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah, but injuring yourself is still a hell of a lot less of an ill than injuring or killing people with a car!

I say this as a person who was the cause of a car accident as a youth (just cars injured) and wrecked my wrists on a bicycle. Would much rather wreck my own body than cause a car accident.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:20 (twelve years ago)

I also get way aggro abt bad cyclists but moreso uninformed drivers who yell at me when I'm following all the rules (like biking in the middle of the street so they can't pass me bcz guess what there is a 4 ft cushion law in effect so you're legally not able to pass me anyway and I don't want you to try and nearly run me over)

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:21 (twelve years ago)

I mean if you think that is a dick move try biking around PHL which is all one-way streets w/ parked cars whose doors will open and hit you and whose owners will scream at you for running into their open door

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago)

true but it was an unfairly weighted comparison

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago)

i see now that the problem w/ this thread is that it's called things you're secretly kinda fascisty about when it should really be called things you're secretly really fascist about.

Mordy, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago)

no such thing as a partway fascist

Also: a few wks ago I saw a guy biking A) the wrong way down a one-way street B) at night, with no lights C) TALKING ON A CELL PHONE BIKING ONE-HANDED. That made me p IA

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago)

like dont get me wrong i kick wing mirrors off've fuckers on my way by, i just see more reckless cyclists than drivers is all

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago)

stevie, you'd love montreal. saw a dude riding between two moving lanes of traffic, going the opposite direction, in the middle of the road

o_O

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago)

being a non-reckless cyclist takes a lot of patience/skill in a city

iatee, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:30 (twelve years ago)

also a certain cognitive dissonance w/r/t statistics

iatee, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:31 (twelve years ago)

Laws that should be passed:

  • Cyclists need to have front and rear lights while riding at night
  • Everyone with a driver's license needs to take some sort of cycling awareness course and LEARN THE FUCKING LAWS

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:32 (twelve years ago)

I hate when cyclists blow through stop signs, but have no problem with them doing a california roll through them, hypocritical, I know

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:32 (twelve years ago)

I mean it's immensely frustrating bcz they pass these laws that are actually really cool (like the 4-ft cushion) but there is no way to enforce them and no way to report people who break them and be taken seriously

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:33 (twelve years ago)

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago)

ya a lot of problems could be solved if speed limits and many other laws already in place were actually enforced

iatee, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago)

that's why I'm also for fascisty cameras everywhere

iatee, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago)

Cyclists need to have front and rear lights while riding at night

Already the law in the state of Ohio. And it specifies a red light in the rear and a white light in the front. I have two each, actually, yr standard battery-powered blinky lights plus these.

Tom Hardy & the Batbreakers (Phil D.), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago)

I know people who have this weird irrational anger, a couple years on, that there were bike lanes added to this street near my home. It used to be a clusterfuck of lanes, parking, and unpainted lines as the city decided what to do. It was either a four lane road (two in either direction) plus occasional turning lanes, or three lanes with parking, or w/e. Now it's mostly two lanes of traffic, a center turning lane for about half the length of the road, and two bike lanes. There's also lots more parking.

The only real thing a driver had to learn was that there is a turning lane for right turns where you cross the bike lane into what is usually the parking lane. It's easy, you look for bicyclists, then merge over when the lane has a dashed line. People RAGE about this. Note that this entire stretch of road is 1.5 miles. A mere two blocks up the hill is a four lane road with next to zero traffic, so if you really wanted to avoid this, you could go up there. All of the numbers so far indicate that shops along the stretch are making more money, the number of accidents has gone down, and there's more foot traffic.

I DON'T GET IT.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:42 (twelve years ago)

people hate change

iatee, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago)

I think the rage comes from the fact people want to take the most direct road, drive as fast as they possibly can, and not have to actually look for things near the road. We have places where you can drive like that, they're called suburbs.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:44 (twelve years ago)

nah man that's called italy

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:47 (twelve years ago)

as someone who didn't own a car until age 28 i'm very sympathetic to cyclists but shitty cyclists (that is, all the cyclists in my neighborhood) enrage me. i think it should be perfectly legal to mow down some beardo fuck going the wrong way down a one-way street.

The 10 best drivers I know are still 10,000x the danger to themselves and others than the 10 worst cyclists.

ok I cannot tell you HOW many times a fucking week I almost hit a cyclist because they're not obeying the traffic laws they're supposed to obey. running red lights, etc.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Thursday, 4 October 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago)

three or four day work week whatever makes most economic sense but you ~have~ to directly contribute to the construction of entire cities designed by rem koolhaas (maybe) and the organization of massive rio de janeiro style carnivals for the entire population.

I like these suggestions because they seem taken straight of the SIm City 2000 model for urban planning.

very very fascisty about drivers bitching about cyclists, and i drive everywhere.

I hit three whole cyclists this morning and I still hate when drivers complain about them

I don't blame all cyclists for the antics of these clowns that surround my college campus, fwiw -- I think it's an engineering student thing.

pssh, who needs an automobile present to have a bike accident

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 5 October 2012 22:09 (twelve years ago)

mh otm, no cars involved,

jumper caught in front wheel at speed, no helmet. Big forehead gash, likely be carrying a decent scar for life, likewise from lip to nose (which is broken), large chip off front tooth, broken fingers, maybe torn calf muscle, shock and concussion. And lucky at that.

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Friday, 5 October 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago)

uuungh I will only be reading that description once

I feel like I got away relatively unscathed with two broken wrists, one of which was unnoticeable to me

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 5 October 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago)

what kind of jumper was he wearing, that it could get caught in the front wheel like that?

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 22:52 (twelve years ago)

he had it on the handlebars, he is 32 fyi

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Friday, 5 October 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago)

sounds horrible. i hit my face hard into the ground in a non-bike accident a few weeks ago and it hurt like absolute hell. the hard bone of your head just smacks right into the unbelievable hardness of the road and any soft tissue in the way just gets smashed right through like it isn't even there. good luck to the poor guy
