I love how some of the news bites about this are all 'confused? Well, first it was a cartoon, then a movie...'
Kevin Eastman has (ok, had) an army tank and a Julie Strain that indicate it might have been something before the cartoon...

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)
Here's the thing. I don't get it when "creatives" take any property with an existing fanbase and make a project with alterations sufficient to a) piss off said fanbase and b) make one wonder why the "creatives" didn't just create their own, completely different thing. Like, I don't get it from a business standpoint, even. If you're banking on brand recognition, why make the brand less recognizable than necessary?
― Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)
I guess Transformers is as good a response to my bafflement as any. "Fuck the fanbase: fans of shitty blockbusters are drawn to spectacle, not adherence to pre-existing continuity."

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)
Again, though (debating myself here): if Bay had just made a big, dumb movie about random robots fighting, people probably still would've swarmed to see it, and the studio wouldn't have owed a dime to the Transformers rights-holders.
― Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

- remember how aweseome Casey Jones was in the movie? I had such a crush on him
I vividly recall a friend introducing me to the (second-gen, kiddie friendly) TMNT comics. He basically turned into Milhouse. "It's great -- these turtles are really kickass at ninja-fighting and they have a mentor who's a rat and they eat pizza ALL THE TIME!"
Why on earth was April O'Neil's always dressed in a yellow jumpsuit anyways? Wasn't she a journalist?(Uh, oh my -- image-googlers be warned: turns out there's a pornographer by that name. Not to mention that a lot of people apparently have felt the urge to draw her being banged by the teenage mutant herpes turtles)
― Øystein, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:56 (thirteen years ago)
I think April wore that cos she was so sexy they had to put her in the least flattering costume ever. And she was still bangin'.
I discovered TMNT one day in Elementary school when some kid had a bunch of action figures. The first two movies are really fun to watch. The first one, in particular, is pretty dark and gritty. The cartoon was a staple of my Sat. mornings and the arcade games are some of the coolest licensed games ever.
The CGI movie was pretty fun, good times. Don't understand why they are going live action rather than CGI cos frankly you can't top the turtles from the first movie.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:04 (thirteen years ago)
Also someone who think Bay is sodomizing the franchise must not be aware of "Ninja Rap", the third film, the TV show with the lady ninja turtle, or the Coming Out Of Their Shells musical tour.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)
One other point about the upcoming movie: the OG creators were never sticklers about cross-media (or even cross-book) continuity. Like, there are easily a half dozen variants of the origin story, for example. But none of those veered as far afield as Bay's proposed vision.
Also, for those who didn't know, the TMNT are owned by Nickelodeon now, not Eastman & Laird. Which may go some way towards explaining why (wrt this particular instance, anyway) Bay just don't give a fuck.
― Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)
People crying about the Bay-ificsation of TMNT have apparently forgotten about this abomination...

Ninja Turtles, cartoon on, was never a high-quality piece of thoughtful entertainment (I never read the original comics of it). It's really irritating to me that kids are being marketed the same things their parents were 20-30 years ago. Maybe this trend's gone on for a long time but I never noticed it. Well, in the early Mirage issues, our band of turtle warriors were much more faithful in their adherence to the ancient art of ninjitsu, but in subsequent appearances, they simply employed a number of martial arts techniques against their increasingly-bizarre rogues gallery, without much of an attempt at achieving or maintaining ninjitsu's trademark aura of invisibility. If I were given the opportunity to speak to the foursome, I would ask them to reconsider the cavalier usage of the word 'ninja' in their self-styled nomenclature.
That should all be read in the voice of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite, btw.

It's got great music, absolutely horrible controls. If you lose Donatello/Leonardo you may as well hit reset. The underwater level gave me strife as a kid but i think after 4 or 5 tries I figured it out and it's actually pretty easy to beat once you get through it. Wading through the relentless respawning armies in the following stage, however...

― Spleen of Hearts (kingfish), Friday, 23 March 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)
the other levels were nearly impossible - i never did beat the final tower, even using the warps to get there. but the speeder stage could be memorized and doable if you did it a million times. i probably still have it committed to muscle memory, considering how many times i died over and over again. i vaguely remember pausing a lot, training to learn the placement of the blocks and such
now the snake and unicycle levels, forget it.. i think i maybe beat them once ever, if that

Michael Bay apparently bringing more creative reinventmentisation to the table, making the turtles not only alien, but non-teenaged, too.
meanwhile longtime main Turtle artist Jim Lawson has been posting pisstake art on the facialbook:

yeah when i was older all the post-desert worlds except world 8 were such a revelation to me cuz when i was a kid i would always use the magic flute trick to skip past them. i think world 7's jungle archipelago was my favorite tho
― Lamp, Monday, 26 March 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)
Gah I was not patient enough for World 7; I think it was 7-1, with the undergrouynd pipe maze that sent you all the way back down to the bottom w/ one wrong move. It was such a pain in the ass and the level with its utilitarian 'black background and shitloads of pipe' aesthetic just didn't reward the ton of time I inevitably spent there. Pipe world just too draining...
World 6, the ice world, was even worse, bcz you couldn't maneuver for shit, but for some reason I loved the idea of ice world, so I tried to hang with it as long as I could before being o'ertaken with despair and double warping to level 8...
― dies irate (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)
i liked the cartoonishly menacing minimalism of those pipe levels, all the black and green and space. i hated the cloud world tho the secrets in those levels were too punishing and unrewarding (all those finnick-y jumps!)
but i also really liked the snakeman levels of mega man
― Lamp, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 03:40 (thirteen years ago)
Ha its only recently (with a modded PSP that has most of the NES games on it that my sister had) that I've gotten the hang of any of the Mega Man games...
― dies irate (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)
I spent a lot of time drawing my own World 7 pipe mazes as a kid but part of the thrill was just having mastered freestyling pictures of overlapping contoured tubes.

― dies irate (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)
Since the character in the movie are alien life forms, they can't really be "turtles", can they? And since they come from another planet, which presumably doesn't have a perfect equivalent of Japan and Japanese culture, they can't be "ninjas" either. So logically the new movie should be called Aliens.

Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE'S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.

Look, it’s great that Eastman, the original cocreator, gets a say (and a paycheck!) in this latest blasphemization/reinvention. But, like, if Paul McCartney wanted to re-release The White Album with, say, a 14-minute Lil B verse on every song, the mass-mind wouldn’t be cool with that, either.

The suits could now be a little cheesy in a modern setting. Yeah, yeah, I don't think we're going to go in that direction.
Yes, CGI ninja turtles are in no way cheesy.

You had a cameo in the second Ninja Turtles film in the '90s. Would you consider appearing on the soundtrack for Michael Bay's Turtles reboot?
I hope so. I don't have anything in writing, but you never know (lifts his pant leg to reveal a Ninja Turtles tattoo). I'm a Turtle fan.

The Hollywood Reporter has broken word that the upcoming, live action, big screen reboot of the popular characters has been shut down, with Paramount pulling the plug and laying off the Vancouver based staff who had already been hard at work on pre-production. At issue, apparently, is a script that the studio had no confidence in.
― polyphonic, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
re: that Vanilla Ice cameo in that second movie
In middle school, some sort of schoolyard fight broke (though I don't recall it getting too violent -- may have just been an intense showdown) and I led a chant of "Go Ninja, go Ninja, Go!" that caught on with the group that was circled around watching the fight.

they should have wes anderson do a reboot faithful to the comic book's origin story
anderson is holding out for directing a "Peanuts" movie but first he's gotta prove he has the chops to direct comic books movies.

The more worrying thing is the idea that for all other Michael Bay films, there was a script that the studio did have confidence in....

Bay prob didn't articulate that you can tell the turtles apart by which color headbands its wearing, thus children will, indeed, need to buy four different turtle toys at every opportunity

just watched the original movie for the first time since 1990 (i'm old) and hey, it's actually kind of awesome! i can't say it's especially 'dark,' but pretty much any time the turtles themselves aren't onscreen it plays fairly straight and serious. they seemed to be going out of their way to make as adult-friendly a turtles movie as possible without going over the top with the 'darkness' shit that everyone seems to want from their comic book movies these days.
also kind of stunned by how much product placement there is in this movie -- there's a can of diet pepsi or something in the foreground of almost every other scene!
