in the past two weeks, this beloved snack food item of my youth came up in two separate conversations and two of the three people involved had never heard of it.

sarahell, Thursday, 23 February 2012 07:42 (thirteen years ago)

are you serious? smh; the combo is an american snack food treasure.

unless it is called a cheese pretzel, then I would be like yeah I want one

Needs a "i have never seen this before in my life, but it is pretzel and cheese, so I would eat it" option. Never heard of it, but it seems like a reasonable snack.

I'm not sure I've ever purchased Combos but if they're around I'll have a couple. I seem to not be running in Combos-eating crowds anymore though.

I could get with pretzels + cheese but the US idea of pretzels filled with cheese has got to be some hell level weird.

Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Thursday, 23 February 2012 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

i think the reason why a lot of ppl may have never heard of them is b/c somewhere along the way they became sort of a second tier snack-- something you'd find towards the rear of the snack aisle at rite aid, rather than something occupying premium shelf space at the supermarket

back in the day (the eighies) they were heavily marketed and enjoyed much greater visibility. these days your paris hiltons are not going to be snacking on combos. maybe your christine aguileras or your don novellos, but not paris. she is the "it girl" of this decade for pete's sake!

dell (del), Thursday, 23 February 2012 10:36 (thirteen years ago)

Just reading those words brings the jingle to the front of my mind. Combos were my stoner snack of choice as a teen; drive to the store for some combos, drive home, put the bag of Combos on the warm engine block while toking up, eat warm slightly melty Combos.

I used to like the cracker ones more than the pretzel ones. Don't know now which one I'd prefer.

the best thing about herr's, and the worst thing about lay's/utz, is the thickness of the herr's chip and the thinness of the utz chip

zapp's neglects the standard flavors in favor of their own wacky concoctions. i don't want "gator tators" i want a standard dill pickle chip. also need a good bbq flavor tho in the south it's hard to top golden flake's sweet heat bbq. utz's carolina bbq and whatever their kettle chip line's vinegary bbq are a+

zapp's gets points for the voodoo gumbo flavor (now renamed to simply "voodoo" i guess so people don't think it's gumbo flavored?) and the salt and pepper.

le ralliement du doute et de l'erreur (Michael White), Thursday, 23 February 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

i think the british crisp market has taken a turn downhill in recent years, to be honest. the ridiculous extent to which the faux-artisan crisp sector has taken over. these fall into the problem of there only being about five basic flavours that the g.b.p. is really comfortable with, on a crisp (vinegar, cheese powder, onion powder, salt, flavour enchancer), and any other flavour being either difficult technically or (i suspect) softballed by the manufacturers so as not to miss the comfort zone -- the recent walkers attempt at a 'chipotle' flavour just tasted purely of onion

the real problem, though, is the great difficulty in locating good tortilla chips

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 23 February 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

or, as we like to call them, "maize crisps"

popping is a way of making our all-natural chips. we start with wholesome potatoes, add a little heat and pressure, along with a little snack magic. and pop! it's a chip. all that’s added is a flavorful blend of all-natural seasonings to create taste-bud popping flavors that appeal to the whole family. pop open a bag of popchips and try for yourself. everybody has a favorite. or two. all it will cost is your IMMORTAL SOUL
