TOP 100 COMEDY FILMS OF ALL TIME NOMINATIONS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Comedies is the new action films. We'll do this in three parts: nomination thread, voting thread & results thread. Once we compile our nominations ilxors will be invited to submit their ranked ballot via email.

I'll accept nominations for movies that are clearly comedies (including movies that were marketed as comedies but are in fact unfunny pieces of crap), or for funny or satirical movies that may not be traditionally considered comedies, accompanied with a good faith argument. I'm not going to accept nominations from lazy trolls. So put a little effort into it, trolls.

agree that WHAS is waaaay overrated on this board. it has some funny bits but it doesn't really work as a movie.

The King of Comedy is a dark comedy, but its talent to amuse is dwarfed by how it's predicted the last 30 years of American look-at-meism.

If you watch Wet Hot American Summer as if it were simply a comedy about summer camp, I completely understand why you'd be underwhelmed. I totally agree that it doesn't gel completely as a movie (I kinda hate the Molly Shannon scenes, for instance), but as a subtle satire of the trappings of bad '80s films, it's kinda great.

Ghost town is one of those movies that looked really awful in trailers but a surprising number of people seem to rep for. I still haven't seen it but have heard a lot of good things from people who's opinions I usually agree with on that sort of thing.

Ghost Town's strength is in it being kind of a surprisingly well made dramedy instead of wall to wall laughs but i still wanted to give it a mention

Y'know, that's kind of how I'm approaching this poll. Some of my favorite comedies don't have many LOL moments. Some of the best comedy is more subtle and surprising than it is necessarily guffaw-inducing.

I keep thinking of funny people (like Michael Keaton) who haven't really starred in any movies that I would nominate for 'top comedy film of all time'.

main character has a distanced, ironic view of everything going on around him. puts all the by-the-book horror stuff into quotation marks, especially at the outset.

lots of comical dialogue, comedy of awkwardness in the pub, convos between protagonist and rotting griffin dunne are straight comedy, "mommy, i saw a naked american man", and yeah, soundtrack commentary. it's a hybrid of horror, comedy and romance, satisfies the criteria for all 3, imo.

This probably isn't really the place to get all wrapped up in comedy theory, but re: the idea that unintentional comedy is not comedy, how much should authorial intention really dictate audience response? I mean...90% of comedy in the world is only comedy because it follows some established comedic formula and is therefore labeled as 'comedy', not because it's in any way legitimately funny. I'm kind of averse to the idea that the artist (or studio or whoever) gets to call the shots w/r/t the genre label we hang on a piece of art, particularly when the artist in question isn't adept at successfully creating, say, a dramatic film that doesn't induce fits of laughter in the audience.

Short version: I'd allow for unintentional comedies in this poll, but I ain't gonna lobby too hard for them or cry if they don't make the cut.
