need to see this show

akm, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

it's good that you specified what network his show is on, otherwise i would've assumed he fronted a band called My Cat From Hell

HalfNelson (some dude), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

I hate this cat demon man.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

He carries around his cat supplies in a guitar case.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

He is so emo about cats and their issues, I just can't.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

I think I'm just going to keep posting reasons why I hate him.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'd rather have the demon cat than the poor man's Guy Fieri in my house.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Those sideburns.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Him playing his Fieri rock to the cats.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

"guys with sideburns but no hair on the top of their heads" should be a picture thread in and of itself

HalfNelson (some dude), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

He's a very odd dude but quite effective in training humans to interact better with their cats.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

Nothing is ever the cat's fault -- he's always blaming the owner for not buying the cat enough toys or rearranging their entire house/furniture to accommodate the cat. Sometimes cats are just assholes?

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

I have known some asshole cats

imagine you hung out with this guy. there'd be a moment like at the bar or at the end of dinner. he'd take off his glasses, and you could see the glasses-crease on the side of his face, and the flat top of the sideburn.

imagine how horrible that would be.

Hahah so it turns out that the other day at my birthday party down here, a friend of mine knows this guy! She said she's a longtime friend of his girlfriend, and says he's actually pretty cool in real life. I dunno, I was more bemused by the show than anything else.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 March 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

He reminds me of this asshole I know who goes by D@ve-O and has annoying catch phrases. For example, if he shows up at a party and someone says, Hey, it's good to see you D@ve-O, he says "It's good to be seen!" He would think this cat idiot was super cool.

He's a geek and sartorially embarrassing, but he knows cats. Cats really aren't that hard to figure out: the crazy ones need to play hunt, the mean ones are hurt or don't have a quiet spot to be alone, the ones with bad bathroom behavior are sick or have a grungy, badly placed or inappropriate litter box, and they all appreciate a little cat style communication (blinking, purr-talking, petting). I don't think he's a genius, but I do think a lot of cat owners are idiots.

There have been several episodes that have boiled down to "your boyfriend is an ass".

kate78, Thursday, 8 March 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

Ha yeah. Like the guy who wouldn't let the cats in the bedroom.

carl agatha, Thursday, 8 March 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

Cats are pretty simple andf ppl are, indeed, prone to be idiots. This is essentially the entire premise of the show.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 8 March 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

Would be interested to know how he deals with cats who weren't properly weaned off their mama's teat, as this has been the case with every broken cat I've ever known. Also is some variant of this problem the reason why he makes himself look like that.

Trying To Do A ‘Gotcha’ Moment (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 8 March 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

michael white and grady otm: the look is a huge, huge problem, but he seems like a decent guy, and he clearly knows & loves cats. figure his appearance is some consequence of horrible LA style and the need for everybody on TV to have some kind of trademark (same thing, i guess).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 March 2012 23:03 (thirteen years ago)

I don't have a lot of experience with improperly weaned cats who are terrified of everything (because I like to adopt the ones that will talk to me in the shelter), but the ones who don't know their limits in playfighting because of early socialization issues aren't too hard to deal with: control your fear and don't react big, punish only by ignoring, and (as Galaxy says every episode because, duh, these are cats), make sure they're playing enough and have appropriate stuff to kill. That's worked for me a couple of times.

⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

lol, j/k. i agree with you in general, but but i have experienced a number of cat problems that don't fit easily into one of those groups. imbalances in dominance behavior among multiple cats, for instance, or the psychological/behavioral consequences of improper weaning (can be a real problem with kittens lost or abandoned very early on). there are general "rules" that apply to most cats, and i think you described them quite well, but like any living thing, there's still an enormous amount of variety from individual to individual. some cats are just outliers, have weird little fur-brains.

StanM, Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

Declawing and abuse can both have damaging psychological effects on a cat, and I don't think the solutions are always as simple as giving the cat space or toys, etc.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

No, that's fair enough -- but I think about my "rules" as better describing the sorts of things humans can do to help cats than a description of various forms of cat psychology. For example, I had a cat with extreme aggression problems that were certainly part physiological (hyperthyroidism), and probably (but I could never know this) in part the result of trauma AND improper weaning. A real mess, but he was fixable, and it wasn't that complicated a fix -- the right meds, and learning the difference between scared defensive aggression and overly aggressive play, and comforting the one and getting the other into shape by combining withdrawal of attention for really bad behavior and getting the good craziness out on toys -- it made a huge difference, and he became an amazing friend to me. Domestic cats are social animals and liking the people you depend on and making them like you is a matter of survival -- that simplifies the whole thing. But it is also true that I always start with a cat by seeing if it reacts to my peaceful attempts at communication, and I don't take the ones who don't home. I do think that a cat who is not completely feral and not brain damaged or -- and yes, I admit there are cats like this -- really stupid can learn to live with people.

Anybody familiar with Jackson’s show My Cat from Hell (currently filming Season 3) has witnessed—and marveled at—how the man connects with cats, winning over even the toughest cases with his trademark “cat mojo.” (Like MCFH, the book includes lots of practical advice about behavior, nutrition, and environmental enrichment—or “catification”—for readers, whether their cats are from Hell or not.)

Bump for Carl.

Jeff, Saturday, 5 October 2013 18:00 (eleven years ago)

This is streaming in Netflix now!

We were so inspired after the first three eps that we bought some shelves for Francie so she can become a tree dweller instead of a bush dweller.

carl agatha, Saturday, 5 October 2013 18:01 (eleven years ago)

Did it work?

quincie, Saturday, 5 October 2013 18:14 (eleven years ago)

We haven't put them up yet. I bought three rolls of sisal remnants to line the shelves so we're waiting for everything to arrive.

When we get them up, I'll take pictures!

carl agatha, Saturday, 5 October 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago)

Please do! Our cats seem to be bush-oriented, but maybe they would like to have some tree options.

quincie, Saturday, 5 October 2013 18:39 (eleven years ago)

Francie is a timid little thing with most people but has always been very social with Jeff and me. She's most comfortable when we're sitting/lying down and she can come at us from head level and then work her way down to lap/pets level. If she's on the floor and we walk by, she'll run under the bed or the chair. So according to Mr. Galaxy, she should do well having some places she can position herself where she can be higher than standing humans. And of course I'm worried that the relatively rapid fire changes of losing her life-long cat sister and gaining a human child as a roommate will send her completely around the bend so if we can do some things to make her feel more secure, that should help.

On top of being a flighty weirdo, she's also supremely emotionally needy and I'm not so secretly hoping that if she develops more confidence, she'll turn into more of a lap cat and less of a "walk around my head, meow incessantly in my face, chew on my hair, and then run away terrified after a random interval" cat. She is more cuddly since Sample died, though, and she'll sit next to me, purring, look me in the face, put out her paw, and delicately extend her razor sharp claws into my arm to let me know that it's time for pets. Then I'll pet her until she drools all over the place, and then she'll run away terrified after a random interval.

oh god, cats are the best and the worst, it is so weird.

quincie, Sunday, 6 October 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago)

two weeks pass...

We (mostly Jeff) hung cat shelves yesterday!!! The cat has so far refused to acknowledge their existence.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 14:08 (eleven years ago)

tbf, it's cold now and she is distracted by all the awesome blankets around that she can burrow into. Once I get over my stubborn refusal to turn on the heat because it's only October, dammit, she'll probably show more interest. Also we've yet to try putting treats on the shelves, enticing her up on the shelves with the fishing pole toy, etc.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 14:10 (eleven years ago)

Maybe try coaxing her up with a space heater?

kate78, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago)

i want to see pics

i watched half of 1 ep of this and have been making circumnavigate the room jokes ever since

Not a great photo with the lights, but you get the idea.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:52 (eleven years ago)

honestly, my cat would love those

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:57 (eleven years ago)

I would probably put a cardboard box to get the cat up there, because of this formula: Cardboard box + Cat = Magic.

StanM, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:59 (eleven years ago)

unngh

so want cat shelves

ͼѾͽ (sic), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 17:04 (eleven years ago)

Shelves/brackets - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S79870350/

A big roll of sisal cut and stapled to the shelves. Hung with toggle bolts. A lot cheaper than buying shelves branded as cat shelves.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 17:11 (eleven years ago)

p sure it would mess with the deposit if I move out at the same time as leaseholding housemate

also I'm still not home for another three months

ͼѾͽ (sic), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 17:36 (eleven years ago)

FRANCIE IS ON THE SHELF. I REPEAT FRANCIE IS ON THE SHELF.

She hasn't ventured into the higher shelves yet, but as you can see, she is interested. It took about an hour of fishing pole play and a pile of treats to get her into the first one, but she's jumped up there on her own a couple of times since. I think if we do the same with the next two, she'll be queen of the shelf wall in no time.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago)

I don't know why I keep typing into instead of onto. Whatever. I'm excited.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago)

I know you're dying for more cat shelf updates, but the cat has now traversed all three shelves without any prompting from us, and hung out up there rubbing her face on them for awhile. They are her shelves now.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 23:37 (eleven years ago)

jenny i am very proud of your recent cat architecture achievement but i feel that i need to be honest and say that i really wish you and jeff had applied to be on the show and have jackson galaxy come over to your place instead

I would love Jackson Galaxy to come to our house! But Francie is not a cat from hell. She's just a weirdo. Maybe Jackson would like to come over for dinner one night.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 October 2013 00:21 (eleven years ago)

Those are really nice shelves! Good for Francie, I hope they help her with the neuroticism.

I don't think he's a genius, but I do think a lot of cat owners are idiots.

Will agree with that!

had not known he had gastric bypass -- he sez this in his book, shit is real -- Benny is his cat

So I came home and sat in front of the TV and i was crying. This is really pathetic and awful to talk about, but I was crying and I was saying to Benny, "I want a turkey sub. I want a turkey sub," and I said it over and over and over and over again. And I thought that for the rest of my life I would never be able to eat one again.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 14 June 2014 14:29 (eleven years ago)

I thought that would end with Benny catching him a turkey tbh

i love our cat despite having to get allergy shots on the reg. this is what happens when you fall in love with a cat owner and don't want to let something insignificant like an allergy stand in your way. i should order this book for her!

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:58 (ten years ago)

I hate cats exactly because there's really no arguing w them or retraining them, you just have to do what they want for them to be any better. This is clearly untenable bc the only asshole in my home is going to be me.

However I think this show is genius and JG really really is what sold me on it. I thought it would be dumb and gimmicky and he would be like "KA-BAM! LET'S TAKE THIS CAT TO THE NEXT LEVEL" or whatever but he is just so cool.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:08 (ten years ago)

we (me and my gf) have recently had big health issues with her cat, and there was a lot of mistrust in vets after being suspicious of the one vet she's always gone to and then deciding to get a second opinion and being told that vet #1 was treating her problems with a weird, unorthodox approach that was probably detrimental to her health, and we just spent a week stuck in total confusion and despair and terror about this cat and why she was just refusing to eat and then started vomiting when she did start trying

and this whole time i was just irrationally thinking "i wish jackson galaxy could be here" cause he would know what to do and also understand just how important this cat is to us and how freaked out we were
