of course not, that's why it was so funny! when it started i was a little ehhh because How I Met Your Mother already had a good made-up game bit but once it got going it was pretty incredible

New Girl just got renewed for a 2nd season btw

i watched this show tonight because it's constantly been on top of ILX, like week in week out for months. it was horrible. generic buddy sitcom non-laffs with no charisma or distinct personality. and zooey is the worst, just staggering around the set looking poleaxed and winsome. i have a feeling that it would be equally successful with no soundtrack as the "pictures of zooey deschanel" show.

the 2 episodes before tonight were significantly better
the guys are worth getting to know. there's more to them

yeah, maybe it was just an off night. tbf, the raising hope show that came on afterwards was so much worse that it make new girl seem pretty ok in retrospect.

i like this show but it's awfully hard for me to hear or understand what the hell anyone is saying half the time. maybe my hearing is going.

I don't think the sound or speaking is any more or less intelligible than any other show. Maybe your TV? Or that particular channel?

i really came around to this show over the season. i think this last episode was one of the weaker ones, though, but i was glad to see thomas lennon.

Well, to be fair, its only because the writing for Ron Swanson has been really lazy for the second half of the most recent P&R season.

Premiere was funny.

new season killing it. has a real Friends-in-its-prime vibe. the ep with the younger hipsters across the hall killed. and they're handling the inevitable Nick'n'Jess romance subplot well - though I reckon the minute they really Ross'n'Rachel it, this show's dead in the water. But right now, it's my favourite thing on TV.

disappointed by this ep. situations seemed forced, parents didn't seem 'real', cast not given space to do what they usually do well.

Nothing in this show seems "real", but I still thought this ep was fun. I think that's why I like this show -- it works when it's emo, and it works when it's just a shallow punchline dispenser

i loved that the drug dealer was just some dude named rob who thought they were trying to rob him

i really like this show again. the odd episode disappoints - like the one with rob reiner in it - but any episode with that game they play, true american, is a keeper. also, i'm gonna cast winston as roast beef in my eventual live-action achewood movie project.

they showed this on a plane a few weeks ago and while I only laughed at one part I was impressed by how tolerable Zooey's character was

exactly. I was bummed at first, figured they'd put it off till later. Then I was like ok, they're going there, but it didn't work so now they've moved on and they'll eventually come back to it. Instead they're accepting it's there and just having fun playing with it.

yeah i'm fine w/ zooey now, which i couldn't have predicted even back when i started liking the show. i would love it if there were a perpetual new girl though. lol @ dan if he think big bang is gonna wrap after 8 seasons, which is kinda a shame cuz i would like to see cuoco working w/ better scripts but at the same time good for her for getting paid serious money which is what happens in the later seasons.

i guess but doesn't it seem like the balance was real out of whack early on, when they seemed to want to define her as (among other things) 'this girl who sings everything!'? and it's gone from whatever that would be, as a trait of a character, to something more like… one affectation/quirk among many of one character among eccentric other characters

I also thought they'd toned down her character's 'quirkiness' quite a bit (including the singing) but they seemed to be bringing it back in "Quick-Hardening Caulk" (probably why it was slightly disappointing to me).

i used to be anti-zooey deschanel but with the backlash that came with her iphone commercial i became pro-zooey... it seemed like the only respectable position. i can't stand she and him but she is pretty good on this show.

the "ruh roh" closing this episode actually worked pretty well.

yeah if you'd told me 'schmidt breaks up the wedding' i would've groaned but they pulled it off well and even if 'the groom is even more relieved than cece the wedding is canceled' is a bit of a cheat at least the writers knew that breaking up a wedding is kinda a shitty thing to do and felt they had to deal w/ that problem. really effective stunt casting, laffed pretty hard when she was the other woman. pretty great season, i've long had this theory that second seasons of sitcoms are usually the best for a number of reasons (i've never really tested this theory and maybe it's just a sorta recent phenom also), this was a pretty great one. selzer otm above: this is the best sitcom on tv right now. starting to get the appeal of zooey but luckily hannah simone is there to remind that o right THAT, that's what a dream goddess looks like. so i should check out the first season?

It seemed clear enough to me beforehand that neither party really had his or her heart in the wedding so I didn't feel that cheated (although I was hoping that Chivrang [?] was really in love with a dude). Actually curious which way Schmidt is going to go. I thought it was pretty bold + commendable for them to have him get back with Elizabeth so I probably will feel cheated if he just decides "Cece". (I mean, it would have been pretty bold for the writers to fully commit to the arranged marriage as well.)

S2 has definitely been the superior season but s1 was pretty good after the first couple of episodes.

read an interview this morning w/ the creator/writer that had a funny quote about how in the original casting call the character of Nick said something like "is secretly the smartest person in the room" and the actor said "yeah, after casting me, you threw that idea out pretty quick"

good finale, though i do feel a bit uncomfortable with how cavalier they threw out the arranged marriage, funny cameo though. i did think to myself "wait... is that..."

winston was the MVP though, that guy is so good. happy how his obsession with pranks and being so awful at them became a thing

I have to say, I recently re-watched all of season 1 on netflix and half of season 2 on hulu, and it's held up really well, all these years later. I mean, it's even funnier than I remember. I think it's hilarious, smart, edgy etc, I think it's the best sitcom in a long time and I think it's stature is going to grow as more people realize how goddamn good it is, and more people are going to start calling frittatas "egg pies".

Almost done rewatching the first two seasons and I have to say...it's just funnier and funnier. This will go down as one of the great sitcoms of all time.

Nice for New Girl to at least have an arc where there isn't just one token black character, but two pretty hilarious ones. At least Winston is to some degree. Coach obv never got a chance to spread his wings.

Some great stuff tonight. Held up.

i thought it was decent, though clearly more effort was set up resolving the cliffhanger and setting up this season, which is fine. so much better than that terrible samberg show.

I thought samberg show coulda been much worse. It's not great, but it had some ok lines.

the rest of the cast wasn't bad, but samberg pretty much ruined it for me. his whole, "lookit me! i just made a HILARIOUS joke" smirk bothered me so much more than it ever did on snl.

Better than the new Mindy Project though I'm not sure that's high praise

this show's fine. they just added s2 to netflix so we watched like 4 eps last night. do they ever give winston a real plotline? also why does everyone make a big deal about schmidt when nick is clearly the funniest character?

Winston definitely gets fleshed out, and he gets something of a plotline or two but it's usually the b-plot. Definitely feels like he forced in there at times, no matter how fleshed out he gets. But he's a good enough character and has enough good lines/parts that it doesn't bother me.

feel bad for that dude. he's a funny actor but his character really gets shafted. we watched the one last night where he's bad at pranks, he was great.

This show is kind of like "Moonlighting" in that it got boring quick as soon as the "will they, won't they" suspense was over.

I'll give it more than one episode to decide if that's the case.

Well, it's been kind of obvious for a while that they were getting together, hasn't it? It seems like the suspense has been gone since midway through last season.

I really enjoyed there flirting and on again off again weirdness last season, and again this past week. Not sure where it will go. Read that the writers are thinking more along the lines of Jim and Pam and Leslie and Ben instead of Sam and Diane or Ross and Rachel.

Winston really needs his own show. Schmidt can come. but only if he ditches the love interests.

Well, no, obviously. But wifey seems so nice. Actually she can do better, losing Schmidt won't be so terrible for her, because she doesn't need to be with someone. But if you ask me who I would rather spend (platonic) time with the answer wouldn't be Cece.

That scene with Winston, Schmidt and Cece was VERY well choreographed. Lamorne Morris was killing it whenever he was in the background of those shots.

watching season 2 on netflix and still laughing over the "we got chokes, hula hoops, and a sitar" thing in the hipster episode.

that was probably my favourite line of the whole series.

Winston walking up to the restaurant reservation desk and eating the glass bead thinking it was a mint = greatest thing ever.

Winston was really the MVP of the episode. His antics to shoo other people away from the community table were the best.

I really hope the show doesn't go to darker places though, as that's not its niche. Hoping the whole Schmidt thread of trying to break Jess/Nick up doesn't become the prevailing story arc, but I doubt they're likely to just leave it untouched, so I have a bad feeling about it.

It's the basis of the next episode so def an arc. Hopefully a short one.

Winston's monologue about the double date was brilliant. At firs they cut away to him and all 4 have these amazing responses, then they go back and it's just him rambling on. He really is amazing. Such a great cast.

Lamorne Morris + Damon Wayans Jr. + Taye Diggs last night = African-American actors are getting better, funnier work on this show than anywhere else on network TV. Who would've thought so for The Zooey Deschanel Show?

wayans did his best with a shitty script i thought but dang all i could think was how GLAD i was that he got replaced by lamorne morris

That convo with Coach, Nick and Jess was a thing of beauty, though. "I'm just telling her what kind of cake to make me, son!"

I feel like the original Coach character was closer to Winston. I remember him being weird and awkward in the pilot. I feel like any attributes he may have had were adopted by Winston when replaced, and now that he's back they came up with a new version of Coach who's different than in the pilot. I thought Taye Diggs stole the episode though. Not my fave episode of recent, but still good stuff.

I looove the little "YEAH, we got Bin Laden" flashback, followed by "I thought I was alone for that?"

i did get the impression that they deliberately let the tone of the episode jar a bit to match the (re)introduction of the character. like, ok, here's a thing, then obviously they will compensate and pretty soon coach will probably be entangled in the apartment's neuroses like everyone else.

• Coach feels semi-permanent now, probably depends on if Wayan's pilot gets picked up next season
• Winston quit his job at the radio station, now looks like he's gonna be a cop? I guess because having two sports-based characters was overkill and frankly he deserves a push
• Cece inexplicably goes form being a model to a bartender
• Kind of subtle, but the reveal that Nick did complete the bar exam and is choosing to be a bartender is a good step away from a seemingly inevitable "Nick gets his shit together and finishes law school" angle (please don't do this, New Girl)

was cece related to the bits about her job last year? e.g. it being idiotic, no one at the date-a-thon wanting to marry her, etc.

the ways in which Nick is an idiot are becoming less funny and more irritating.

tbh at some point they did try to show another side of him - he actally did take the bar exam and passed iirc -, but they then quickly came back to the "MacGyver" screaming as you say.

I was hoping Nick would whip out some crazy lawyer skills, get "Where the fuck did that come from?!" reactions from Schmidt and Winston, leave the opposing lawyers in the dust, and remain an utterly hopeless schlub in every other aspect of his life. Instead of "I'm not the guy who puts a toy together!" he could've been "I'm not the guy who's a lawyer!" Or something.

I lolled hardcore at this week's 'cumin' gag but yeah, this show is treading water and has been for a while. I assumed when it started that the show would be a bunch of nutty kooks yelling at each other and was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to have some depth, but now it seems to be devolving into exactly that.

Mostly it just makes me wish 'Happy Endings' was still around :(

i love the cast right now - especially Hannah Simone getting more screen time - but they're still struggling to get time for all six. coach and winston pretty screwed this past week. that said, still a funny episode. also, nice to see Michaela Watkins, though I wonder what happened to Schmidt's old boss/occasional hook-up

Yes. I disagree. I thought it was a lot of fun.

Man, I actually think this season is a huge step up from the back half of last season. It has its ups and downs, but I'd rather see the ridiculous slapstick stuff like the meth episode than the hamfisted relationship bullshit.

season 3 really sucked for a while (imo "birthday" through the end of the linda cardellini stretch, and i say that as linda cardellini) but got funny again in its last few eps, S4's been on and off laffs-wise. wayans jr is great. i wish they'd quit it with the endless "every character meets the perfect person who is perfect for them in every way and then they suddenly have to break up" cycle. just marry nick/jess schmidt/cece coach/winston and move on.

when it's funny it's funny.

nick/jess in S3 was horrible, both together and not. it sucks when they lean on their great will-they-won't-they run-up for a season and then have no idea what to do when the actual relationship starts. so they just run through all the sitcom tropes. nick came out of it with all his edges sanded off and he's been mostly tough to watch since.

i'm apparently the only one who hates what they've done to winston?? he started off as an actual human being, they didn't really know what to do with him, so they turned him into a cartoon vegetable who needs to be reminded how to walk and which hole food is supposed to go into. the "winston loves puzzles and winston has literally no idea how a puzzle works" story made me want to punch a wall. S4's been better but that was all he was in S3.

Wow no posts in this thread for a year. It's show malaise of the cursed ILX quotation mark topic search syndrome.
Show has definitely had a bit of decline for the last season or so, but I'm still enjoying it. Some thoughts about the recent half season:

1) a little ashamed to admit this but Megan Fox is still crazy mean/hot and i found her run watchable on that basis alone
2) glad they seem to actually be giving Winston and CeCe more time and jokes, especially CeCe who gets a lot more room to go wacky
3) Nasim Pedrad is adorable and great but I hope she actually gets a full role on this show eventually rather than what seems inevitable - that she gets weakly written off when her and Winston don't pan out
4) Nick has kinda become the defacto leader of the show this season, weird since Jess was out for so long and Schmidt got so much focus last year

it's turned a lot into HIMYM for me - it's still enjoyable often enough and i'm invested enough in the characters that i still watch every week. but it's never remarkable. i agree w/ everything else you just wrote.

it's the perfect show to not expect anything from. sometimes it lands, sometimes it doesn't. i fear that they are occasionally joey'ifying nick (i.e. making him more stupid than any human could be for cheap jokes) but so far they've kept that weakness in check. im perfectly content for it to persist or really to wrap at any pt

Peter Gallagher was a nice twist this week, i am not sure when i last saw him in anything

Yeah, I am in the camp that thinks it should've ended last season. It's fine now but feels like a different show.

I am trying to remember if there have been outright laughs so far.

I'm enjoying this season, but mostly because the writers have clearly just decided to let it be completely silly and cut the last remaining tethers to believability, which is fine by me.

Nick and Schmidt's interaction over the mustache was great, also liked the Winston masturbation flashback.

I had to google what this masturbation flashback was because I may have fallen asleep during that episode.

The rest of the episode wasn't great, so that's fair, it might just be that college Nick always makes me laugh.

I am reading the summaries of the episodes from this season. I missed a couple (I really didn't like the first 2 epis) but the wedding episode was great and I am excited about the True American last epi. When I think of New Girl I think of True American and Winston.
