That bear actually made The Today Show and I saw a segment about him. It wasn't a one off thing, he lives on a farm or something somewhere and learned to wave from all the people who would wave at him. People go there now specifically to get a wave from him.

That group of four are all grizzlies! A mom and three young'uns. The big hump and the dished face are dead giveaways. You can see how much bigger the mom is than the couple of black bears that come by. The immature griz are as big as full grown blacks.

iirc lack of maternal interest was not the issue. cubs were born sick and mom was eating them (as is the way in the wild). sad for everyone, mama included, and glad this one gets modern health care a new lease on life. sometimes people do good things, even if zoos are bad.

but be warned it's painful. he was apparently orphaned and wandered onto a family farm where he was taken in and seemed quite happy. but since brown bear cubs grow into brown bears, he was taken away. first to a concrete shelter and eventually to a sanctuary where he died under mysterious circumstances

A man beside me toting a camera the size of a NASA telescope was entranced, murmuring, "They're so furry" and "They don't look scary at all." But I was heartbroken. The wild had been taken from these bears. It was gutting to see these bears stumble to the edge of the road to grab handouts from people like me.

I remember one large bear sitting motionless on his rear, his legs sticking straight out, paws tucked between his knees. He looked like an over-bundled child at the bottom of a ski lift who'd just seen his snowboard slide down the mountain. This bear made me feel queasy. He was not acting like a bear. He seemed depressed.

Living a caged life always on display, begging for junk food, is not what these animals were born to do. I'm a hunter. I've killed and eaten bears, an act some would say I should be tortured for committing. But what I saw at Bear World was a fate much crueler than death by arrow or bullet. I saw bears that had become "institutionalized," as actor Morgan Freeman puts it in the movie, The Shawshank Redemption. The film is about freedom, if you haven't seen it—something these bears will never know.

Yellowstone Bear World no doubt educates. It shows people wild animals they probably will never see in the wild. Many bears that live there were born in captivity or are "problem bears," meaning they've been trapped and relocated after becoming habituated to humans. I can understand that, but it sure as hell didn't feel right watching a bear named Teton posing for the tourists, crumbs falling down his chest, an unmistakable glint of shame in his eyes.

my mom has had to chase a mama bear and yearling off of her porch twice in the last few weeks, first time they found the birdseed container and just busted through the screen door to eat it, second time they came back looking for more sunflower seeds. her and my stepdad are now bringing in all the bird feeders, turned all the compost over, and are hoping they move on soon.

Autopsy: Man found in Smokies died of meth overdose before being eaten by bear

After search crews found an adult black bear scavenging the body, the animal stayed in the area and exhibited aggressive behavior for hours.
Biologists trapped the bear long enough to apply a GPS tracking collar and recover human DNA from the animal. Officials then released the bear, reviewed the evidence and determined the bear should be euthanized.
"While the cause of Mr. Hill’s death is unknown at this time, after gathering initial evidence, consulting with other wildlife professionals and careful consideration, we made the difficult decision to euthanize this bear out of concern for the safety of park visitors and local residents,” Park Superintendent Cassius Cash said in a Sept. 12 news release.
Media outlets cited the release to report the bear had been euthanized, which prompted the park to clarify two days later that the animal had not yet been slain. Getting close enough to humanely shoot the bear proved surprisingly difficult, officials said.
The bear evaded death until Sept. 16, when park rangers fatally shot the animal.
The autopsy of Hill's body, performed at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, revealed "extensive postmortem animal predation," but found no evidence he was attacked by the bear while he was alive, the autopsy report says.
According to the report, Hill initially had to be identified through his personal belongings and tattoos, which included a skull and crossbones with the inscription "AC/DC," and a Confederate battle flag bearing the words, "IT'S A REDNEK THING!"

Shannon Stevens spent the weekend with her brother and his girlfriend at a remote yurt on Chilkat Lake, 17 miles from Haines.
After traveling across the frozen lake by snowmachine on Saturday, they cooked sausages over an outdoor firepit. Later that evening, Stevens left the yurt to use the outhouse.
“Normally, when we are out there in the summer or the fall I’m used to shouting ‘Hey, bear!’ the whole way. It was the dead of winter, so I didn’t think to do that this time,” Stevens said. “I got in there and sat down on the toilet seat, and something just immediately bit me in the butt. I jumped up and screamed.”
She called for her brother Erik Stevens who came running to investigate.
“I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m going to open the lid and look.’ I take the headlamp and I grab the lid of the toilet seat and I lift it up,” Erik Stevens said. “Right at the level of the toilet seat, maybe an inch or two below, is a gigantic bear face looking right back up at me.”
He closed the lid and they ran back to the yurt as fast as they could. Shannon Stevens was bleeding, so they cleaned the wound and bandaged it up.
She said she was shocked, but not seriously injured.
“It felt like just a single puncture. Maybe it wasn’t even a bite. It might have been a swipe with his claw potentially. I don’t think we’ll ever really know that part,” Shannon Stevens said.

Black Bears Caught On Camera Breaking Into Avon Vehicle

There was a car break-in in Avon this week and it was caught on camera. It’s a good thing too, because you might not believe it without seeing it yourself.
Those breaking in, were not even human.
With its proximity to the Farmington River and heavily wooded surroundings, Anvil Drive is the type of area where black bears commonly live. So, people in that Avon neighborhood aren’t surprised when they see them, except when they break into cars.
Earlier this week, three black bears were caught on home surveillance video strolling up alongside an SUV parked in a driveway. The curious family decided to look. No keys. No problem. Two of the three little bears cleanly opened the driver and front passenger doors. Then, climbed in to explore.
The owners of the vehicle tell us the paint wasn’t even scratched and there was only minor upholstery damage.
Neighbors said they’ve seen bears in the neighborhood before and they’re becoming bolder.
“The fact that they’re opening car doors, that’s a little wild,” said next door neighbor Scott Turken.
Turken said he sees bears about once a month, including an encounter where they knocked over his trash.
“They just sat out there for about an hour and a half, just chewing whatever they could get their hands on,” he said.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WRAL) – Video captures a black bear climbing down a tree to get some tasty treats.
Jelly donuts and sardines did the trick.
The bear was seen around a tree at an area hospital early Wednesday morning.
An employee at the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says the bear probably showed up Monday night.
Officials say the cub, now called Rex, is around 18 months old and weighs between 70 and 80 pounds.
They are hoping he will find his own way to safer habitats.
Officials say the bear is not a threat to people but urged everyone to be cautious when in the area.

Bear Injures Raft Guide Camping Along Middle Fork Flathead River

Around 6 a.m., a commercial raft company was on a guided overnight trip with two guides and three clients when a bear entered camp, the release states. The victim, an adult female guide, reported she was sleeping outside on the ground when she sustained injuries from what officials believe was a black bear.
Bear spray was deployed but the bear returned multiple times to camp, according to the release.
The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Logan Health in Whitefish.

I said to my wife that the bear probably came up and poked at her with its paw, like, "Hey, you awake?" Hope they don't kill it.

Around 4:15 this morning I heard a couple of big banging sounds outside, enough to actually wake wide up and take a peek outside. A bear had knocked over my trash can out on the street (today is pickup day), got upset by the lack of shitty food garbage (compost all the way!), and then decided to go full Kool-Aid Bear through the gate in the fence, across my backyard, and finally Kool-Aid Bear again through the fence I share with my neighbors on the SW side. Somehow, the bear avoided knocking down the rudimentary fencing for our eventual vegetable garden for which I am thankful.

Tourist Mauled After Rolling Down Window For Bear Selfie

A Scottish tourist is thankful to be alive after a close encounter with a wild bear sent her to the emergency room.
Moira Gallacher, 72, had been vacationing in Romania with her friend Charmian Widdowson when the women decided to go for a drive through the Carpathian Mountains.
During the outing, the women came across a couple of brown bears and did their best to get a photo of the wildlife.
“What happened was the bear came up to the window at my friend’s side, and no problem. It let us take a picture and went away,” Gallacher said in a video shared by Scottish outlet STV News on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday, April 23. “But I didn’t get a proper picture, so we went back and it was at my side.”

Are giant pandas actually bears? or massive rodents

DNA sequencing finally proved that, yes, giant pandas are bears. They were originally thought to be bears, then placed in the raccoon family (Procyonidae), then in a family of their own together with the red panda and are now considered bears again.
No zoologist ever considered they were rodents iirc although rhino-sized capybara-like rodents did exist in prehistory.

Ahh, okay... I thought raccoons were rodents but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore: 'Distantly related to cats and dogs, they share a common evolutionary ancestor with bears.'

xxp it gets confusing because old phenotypic classifications (and reclassifications) were often made on guesswork based on physiology and locale, whereas you can now slap some panda dna in a sequencer and figure out that their genotype says "bear"

Similar incidents have occurred in recent years.
In 2018, a man in Alaska was critically injured after his hunting partner shot a bear on a ridge. The animal tumbled down a slope into the man, who was also struck by rocks dislodged by the bear.
Another man was injured in 2019 after his hunting partner shot a bear in a tree in North Carolina. The bear fell out of the tree and began biting the hunter. The man and the animal then tumbled off a cliff. The hunter was taken to a hospital, while the bear was later found dead.

Your chances of being killed by a falling bear are low but never zero.

Bears raid honey store after enclosure escape
Two bears who sparked the evacuation of a wildlife park involving trained firearms staff and police had headed straight for the honey store, the park has said.
