clemenza, Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, definitely going to seek out The Seventh Victim. Been meaning to watch Let's Scare Jessica to Death for ages, but think the poll may be an extra impetus.

ShariVari, I like your ballot!

emil.y, Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:21 (thirteen years ago)

Also, I totally could have done a ballot twice as long. Felt really bad missing off both oddball pets and straight classics to try to balance my ballot.

Simon H., Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

My ballot:

Seventh Victim, The (1943)
Bride of Frankenstein, The
I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
Brood, The (1979)
Body Snatcher, The
Scanners (1981)
Cat People (1942)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
American Psycho
Black Cat, The (1934)
And Soon the Darkness (1970)
Eraserhead (1977)
Freaks
Blob, The (1958)
Old Dark House, The
Inland Empire
Curse of the Demon [Night of the Demon] (1957)
Gremlins (1984)
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Carnival Of Souls (1962)
Innocents, The
Haunting, The (1963)
Videodrome
Psycho (1960)
Pulse
Death Line [Raw Meat]
Deathdream [Dead of Night] (1972)
Eyes Without A Face [Les yeux sans visage]
Mad Love
Tingler, The
Uninvited, The (1944)
Fly, The (1986)
Let's Scare Jessica to Death
Images
Black Christmas (1974)
Exorcist II: The Heretic, The
Frankenstein (1931)
Fright Night (1985)
God Told Me To [Demon] (1976)
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Invisible Man, The (1933)
Shivers [They Came From Within] (1975)
Island of Lost Souls, The
Let the Right One In (2008)
Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane, The (1976)
Rabid
Poltergeist (1982)
Seconds (1966)
Wayward Cloud, The [Tian bian yi duo yun] (2005)

This was put together a little hastily; favorites went at the top but beyond that the order didn't matter so much, and American Psycho's high placement was actually an accident — doesn't seem to have affected the poll, though. I was somewhat arbitrary about what films I excluded on not-horror grounds; The Wayward Cloud isn't quite a horror film in any conventional sense but since someone nominated it and it probably wouldn't show up in much of any other poll I thought I'd include it. Scanners may be more of a sci-fi film, but my terror at seeing its video box and tagline in the rental store is among my favorite childhood memories.

Films I've now seen thanks to the poll:
Threads (great, would've voted for this)
Audition (I'd seen Imprint and didn't really think I'd need to see anything else by Miike; I'd say I was probably right, though the gleeful sawing away at the foot and tossing it against the glass was worth a chuckle)

Still need to see:
Possession

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

Nice amount of 30s/40s stuff there. Still can't quite believe Shivers got so heavily robbed.

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

I made little distinction for horror/not horror formality and voted for favorites

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

I loved how easy it was to enter your ballot after a certain point, La Lech.

Count-Dracula-Down (Eric H.), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

I did fail to organize them after a while.

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

I was only sad it meant Texas Chainsaw would only be getting 3 points. And Seventh Victim 7 lol.

Count-Dracula-Down (Eric H.), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

I was trying to submit by the deadline, it led to carelessness!

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

Hee, nice alphabeticalness. Yeah, there's definitely a bunch in there that I want to see - mostly the Girl Films.

Orphan keeps on getting shown on the telly and I get all excited because I think it's the Orphanage, which got really good write-ups, but it is not. And it's a bit rubbish.

I had a pretty consensus ballot, I guess, most things placed. I have to admit I've never worked up the nerve to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which makes me a wuss of a horror fan. Just the idea of it always gave me the cold robbies. But maybe this poll will make me rectify that. (non-placing votes in bold.)

Alien -- 50
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) -- 49
Halloween -- 48
Psycho (1960) -- 47

TM: for what it's worth, there are films on your own list much more graphic than Texas Chainsaw Massacre, although--as discussed during the countdown--TCM is incredibly intense and disturbing without being all that graphic.

night of the lepus is legit one of my mom's favorite movies

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 25 May 2012 01:08 (thirteen years ago)

also a few months back i was over at her place and we watched ORCA: THE KILLER WHALE (another mom fave) and i almost felt like i had to throw some shine on it in this poll for the inadvertent-deckside-whale-abortion scene if nothing else, because it really did disturb me.

Boris Kutyurkokhov (Eisbaer), Friday, 25 May 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

Strongo, how does your mom feel about the 1978 movie Piranha? It is another gem imo.

sarahell, Friday, 25 May 2012 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

she enjoys that one as well

another mom fave is 1972's FROGS, which borders on lynchian at times

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 25 May 2012 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

i think Frogs is a must-see for me. I can't believe I haven't seen it.

i probably shoulda had my mom submit a ballot. she told me a while back the two movies she enjoys watching most when she can't get to sleep are giant-ant film THEM and the original h. hawks version of the thing, because they calm her right down.

the soundtrack when the Piranha attack is pretty awesome

sarahell, Friday, 25 May 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

Ha--I special-ordered Frogs a few years ago for a co-worker who collected stuff having to do with, well, frogs. Ray Milland was really on a roll right about then, what with The Thing with Two Heads.

clemenza, Friday, 25 May 2012 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

John Sayles was one of the writers on Piranha, and I think he also did Alligator -- there are similar capitalism-without-a-conscience themes in both

sarahell, Friday, 25 May 2012 01:46 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, and for the sake of...whatever, here's the 51-55 I had to cut off my ballot:

Birds, The (1963)
Brood, The (1979)
Changeling, The
From Dusk Til Dawn (1996)
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 25 May 2012 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

The only Halloween film I actually saw in the theater (was too young for for I and II). I know it was sort of retroactively excised from the series, but I remember it fondly. Did not pick up on this: "The fictional town of Santa Mira was originally the setting of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and named as such in Halloween III as an homage to Siegel's film."

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 25 May 2012 03:01 (thirteen years ago)

I saw it about 10 years ago, so I got the Santa Mira thing. I was sad not to see it place, but then I like "tv is evil" movies from the 70s and 80s

sarahell, Friday, 25 May 2012 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

the only thing i remember about Halloween III is the Silver Shamrock jingle.

the Silver Shamrock jingle is great.

The Hunger soundtrack is pretty awesome, even minus the Bauhaus song

sarahell, Friday, 25 May 2012 03:27 (thirteen years ago)

OG C.H.U.D. was a neat (but slight) low-budget horror/monster film. the "bud the chud" follow-up was one of the worst pieces of cinematic shit i've ever seen (as in, i accidentally domed your son-bad).

Boris Kutyurkokhov (Eisbaer), Friday, 25 May 2012 04:02 (thirteen years ago)

1. Suspiria - did not a great man once say of this film, "... pushes all the boundaries, all your preconceived notions of what horror can be?" at least it landed in the Top 10.
2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
3. The Evil Dead
4. Night of the Living Dead
5. Possession
6. Cannibal Holocaust - not even in the Top 150? really, ILE? and with tFBWP ensconced at 28?
7. Freaks
8. Hellraiser (1987)
9. Audition (1999)
10. The Wicker Man
11. Repulsion
12. Reflecting Skin, The (1990) - i may have ranked this too high, and at the expense of something more deserving. but i make no apologies. it has always been a "pet" pic.
13. Candyman (1992)
14. Black Sunday - livid with rage that Bava Sr. didn't even place in the top 100. how is that even possible?
15. Cemetery Man
16. Martin - i weep
17. (Horror of) Dracula (1958) - there's no excuse for the absence of this Hammer masterpiece from the nominations. eh, it's nothing special. ONLY THE BEST DRACULA EVER. grrrrrr.
18. Let the Right One In (2008)
19. Braindead
20. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
21. The Descent
22. Blind Beast (Môju)
23. Curse of the Demon [Night of the Demon] (1957)
24. Thing, The (1982)
25. Re-Animator
26. Uzumaki
27. Blood and Black Lace
28. Black Christmas (1974)
29. Carnival Of Souls (1962)
30. Basket Case - Henenlotter is an American treasure.
31. Ringu (1998)
32. Horror Express (1972) - so, ILE is actually saying that there's a more purely entertaining horror movie under our Sun than this gonzoid Eurotrash genre mash-up? i beg to differ.
33. Brood, The (1979)
34. Inside - was SURE this would crack the Top 20. 113 is absurd. this is a precision-engineered shock machine.
35. The Beyond
36. Last House on Dead End Street
37. Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural - i thought there was more affection for this unique film here. guess Jessica won the popularity contest.
38. I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
39. Zombi 2
40. Viy - once the spirits kick into high gear, it's as wild a ride as any of Raimi's.
41. In My Skin - deserves a share of that abundant Cronenberg love. de Van's auteurist freakshow is true body horror. just about the most unsettling thing i've ever watched.
42. The Island of Lost Souls - shocked that this stone cold pre-Code classic didn't even place.
43. Tesis - has Amenábar's chilling debut been forgotten?
44. Eden Lake
45. A Bell from Hell - one-shot Iberian brilliance. Poe meets Buñuel.
46. Hausu
47. Clean, Shaven - even the Criterion SOA wasn't enough to earn this psychoacoustic creepfest a place in the pantheon?
48. Martyrs
49. The Untold Story, The - Cat III has to be represented. very hard choice between this, Red to Kill, and Run and Kill. but Tony Wong would eat Tony Hopkins for breakfast. Raw.
50. Messiah of Evil - some consolation in knowing that i wasn't the only one. deeply derivative and flawed, yet still something special. if you've only seen PD prints, seek out the Code Red restoration. it's a whole new film.

16. Martin - i weep

i thought this was a curious omission from the list - i imagine its absence was due largely to finicky vote allotment among Romero titles? p sure that's what kept Day of the Dead from placing as well (tho I didn't vote for either, I can see the argument for Martin having been shortchanged - Day otoh is a bit of a snooze imo)

Carnage of PJ Soles (Pillbox), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

is this Outer Space for which several you voted the Peter Tscherkassky short?

very interesting giallo-heavy list, ShariVari. but i think you and I are in complete disagreement about what makes for a great giallo. Five Dolls instead of Girl or B&BL? Glass Dolls instead of Perfume? Locked Room rather than Ms. Wardh? and no Footprints (on the moon), Seven Bloodstained Orchids, Iris, Petals, Butterfly, or The Fifth Cord?

I thought about voting for Footprints, but felt like it was too giallo, not enough horror. Even though it does feature my favourite trope of the fractured mind...

emil.y, Friday, 25 May 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)

that's 10 supremely unnerving minutes of film, agreed. if i'd realized that shorts were in contention, i'd have repped hard for Olivier Smolders' Adoration and Mitch Davis' Divided into Zero. maybe Dennison Ramalho's Amor Só de Mãe, too.

how could i have omitted Kargl's Angst? stupid stupid stupid.

the fractured-mind film really deserves its own subgenre heading. and while Footprints is sublime, is there a better giallo-esque representation of this trope than A Quiet Place in the Country?

1 - Carnival Of Souls (1962)
2 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (1974)
3 - Audition (1999)
4 - Nosferatu (1922)
5 - Last House on Dead End Street - I guess this had no chance if even our beloved cryptkeeper didn't vote for it
6 - Alien
7 - Night of the Hunter, The
8 - Martyrs
9 - Shivers [They Came From Within] (1975) - repping for it in the voting thread did little good and it suffered the ignoble fate of tying with scream for #145, most underrated cronenberg imo
10 - Shining, The

11 - Eraserhead (1977)
12 - Carrie (1976)
13 - Evil Dead, The
14 - Bride of Frankenstein, The
15 - Macbeth (1971) - no-chance polanski vote
16 - Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural - way overdue for reappraisal if it couldn't even crack the top 150
17 - Shock Waves - think I'm the only person who out and out loves this underwater nazi zombie film
18 - Eyes Without A Face [Les yeux sans visage]
19 - Let's Scare Jessica to Death
20 - Fly, The (1958)

21 - Freaks
22 - Ringu (1998)
23 - Return of the Living Dead, The (1985) - you motherfucking goddamn bastards, if I'd known you were going to place this at #124 I'd have repped harder, should've been as much of a lock as reanimator or deadalive
24 - Don't Look Now (1973)
25 - Homebodies (1974)
26 - Cat People (1942)
27 - Gemini
28 - Near Dark (1987)
29 - Re-Animator (1985)
30 - Cure (1997)

31 - Impulse (1984)
32 - Masque of the Red Death, The (1964)
33 - Messiah of Evil (1973) - #110 actually a pretty decent placing for this, would've been cool if it could've cracked the top 100
34 - Phase IV (1974) - really has no place on this list but I'm chemically incapable of not voting for it
35 - Viy
36 - Angst (1983) - strongo, hal jam, v v disappointed in u
37 - Wicker Man, The
38 - Tale of Two Sisters, A - thought the korean stuff would've faired better, in hindsight I would've made this higher and included the host, and agitated a bit more on the voting thread
39 - X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963)

40 - Onibaba
41 - Deathdream [Dead of Night] (1972) - had hopes for this one but I guess not every 70s low budget shocker can place, especially when the director's follow up was black christmas
42 - Suspiria
43 - Hour of the Wolf / Vargtimmen (1968)
44 - Creature from the Black Lagoon
45 - Blood on Satan's Claw [Satan's Skin] (1971)
46 - Hands of Orlac, The (1924)
47 - Trouble Every Day - was nice to see this show up on a couple of ballots, when the world ends there will be a cliff with me + mr hal jam on it still debating its relative importance to the french extreme horror movement (someone should come up with a better name for this - froid vague?)
48 - Embodiment of Evil
49 - Tales from the Hood (1995)
50 - Company of Wolves, The (1984)

5 - Last House on Dead End Street - I guess this had no chance if even our beloved cryptkeeper didn't vote for it

In retrospect, I could've thrown it a few points. No reason to have given Uncle Sam its symbolic 1 point.

Count-Dracula-Down (Eric H.), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

23 - Return of the Living Dead, The (1985) - you motherfucking goddamn bastards, if I'd known you were going to place this at #124 I'd have repped harder, should've been as much of a lock as reanimator or deadalive

Now, now, let's not say things we can't take back. I think what you really meant to say was "you mtherfucking goddamn bastards who didn't vote for Return Of The Living Dead", which is a sentiment I can get behind. Which reminds me: I personally find Tarman to be one of the creepiest horror characters ever. In a movie that is generally anything but creepy.

that's part of what I love about return of the living dead - whatever it tries to do it does well, whether it's funny, gross, creepy, touching, disturbing... sometimes simultaneously. it's stood the test of time, and eminently rewatchable too.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane, The (1976)

such a weird-ass movie. (another mom fave, btw.)

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it's great. hard to peg as a horror movie (tho it was certainly marketed as such), too creepy to call a domestic drama, and not very thrilling for a thriller.

my first viewing at 7 or 8yo was interrupted when I lost my mind at the first death scene, which is mildly shocking but overall pretty innocuous. kids are weird.

La Lech - explain me Watcher In The Woods?

Hal Jam - I feel really bad about the Hammer Dracula. I did my ballot in great haste at the last minute and at work, and I honestly couldn't remember which fkin Dracula was the US title for this.

We might disagree less than you think! Blood & Black Lace was my no.8, Ms Wardh and Locked Room were pretty close on my ballot and i voted for The Case Of The Bloody Iris under the name "What Are Those Strange Drops Of Blood Doing On Jennifer's Body".

I think there came a point when i just had to stop myself voting for more gialli, though, which is how some of the other missed out.

Just like you, except hot (ShariVari), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

Gemini is a brilliant choice, E3, my dear fellow in LHODES, Lemora, Viy, and Messiah-love.

i need to watch EoE again. and TED, prolly.

day-late considerations: Reeve's The Sorcerers. how'd this film get lost? and Freda's L'orribile segreto del Dr. Hichcock, clearly worshiped by both Bava and Argento.

I remember really liking the funhouse, in the 90s I considered it one of hooper's most underrated films. there's a serious, dramatic approach to the material, in contrast to other 80s watch-teens-die-while-trapped-in-death-trap films. not sure why it didn't end up on my ballot.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 25 May 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

The Funhouse seems very much a product of what was evidently a pretty troubled shoot, but the very things that don't seem to work (i.e. it takes about an hour for it to even start getting "scary") are also what make it resonate. The teen victims aren't exactly that much more fully shaded than your average F13 flick, but you've spent more time with them at any rate, and so when one gets assaulted and killed against that flickering light from behind the giant exhaust fan, it's genuinely upsetting.

Plus, William Finley as moonshine-sneaking sideshow magician/vampire A+

Also the extras in the cast are just so delicious!

the funhouse's treatment of the "monster" also very interesting

Croupier - wait so Dahmer is worth seeing...?!

People who don't like it really don't like it, but I thought Jeremy Renner was fantastic and disturbing in this

da croupier, Friday, 25 May 2012 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

i also enjoyed it, and mostly for renner's performance as well. i think i watched it based on a croup ilx rec in the first place.

Yeah I'm esp sad abt Dagon and In The Mouth...

I forgot to vote for in the mouth of madness but it's a lot of fun. the part *mild spoiler* at the hotel check-in counter where the camera pans down to the naked guy chained by the neck is when I realized I was in for a weirder ride than I expected.

and the house of wax remake is a fun one to get drunk with some buddies on a weeknight to. throws a few more curveballs than it needed to even. almost definitely not the 50th best horror movie I've ever seen but it's a good time and I felt like my ballot was a little canon heavy, so I threw it a bone.

kind of bittersweet that the poll w/ the most morbs-friendly results in terms of silent, 20th century, and international films is the one he couldn't care less about

tbh I wish more b-grade stuff like that had made the Top 100. one of the reasons I love the horror genre so much is that it makes room for these kinds of bizarre artifacts.
