This is the nomination thread for a ballot submission poll of the "top 100" animated films of "all time".
Nomination Eligibility Requirements
All nominated works must be animated, using any technique, traditional or computer-aided, including but not limited to hand-drawn, cel, stop-motion, rotoscoping, motion capture, and 3-D. For films which combine animation and live action, the work is only eligible if all the action is animated for the majority of the film. (James and the Giant Peach and Pagemaster are eligible, Pete's Dragon is not.) Works consisting of montaged still photographs of live action are ineligible (La jetee)
Films eligible for nomination include:1. Feature films created for theatrical, home video, or television original release, including properly so-called feature films in the continuity of episodic television. (The Lion King and all its direct-to-video sequels are eligible. Most Naruto spin-off movies are eligible.)2. Shorts and short-subjects intended for theatrical distribution, film festivals, anthology TV shows, or home video, but not individual episodes of any running TV series. (Warner Bros. shorts, Don Hertzfeldt, most animated shorts ever are eligible.)3. Stand-alone "specials" created for television. (Rankin/Bass and Charlie Brown are eligible.)
Ineligible: any episodic content whatsoever, including TV series (Adventure Time), OVA (FLCL), web series (Homestar Runner), or individual episodes of same. (Maybe we'll poll this in Animated Creatures II.)
Nominate stuff by posting in this thread! Since lots of nominations, especially shorts, may be obscure, please provide as much identifying information as you can in your nomination, including YouTube or Vimeo links if possible.
Nominations will eventually be listed at http://stuff.jklol.net/animation/; this link will be updated periodically and updates announced in the thread. Nominations will close at a random time on or after June 10th.
Have fun!

I OK'd Svankmajer's Alice; I really don't know how to feel about Roger Rabbit. Obviously many animators worked hard on the movie but many animators worked hard on Pirates of the Caribbean too. Let's say that Roger Rabbit and Mr. Limpet get in; I'll continue to case-by-case these based on seekrit algorithms.

I don't get the hatred for Shrek. It's funny, it's touching, it does a remarkable inversion of the sexist Beauty and the Beast myth... Do you really think it's bad because it has maybe three double entendres (which are extra jokes, not its "premise#)? Most animated movies for kids these days have a few mature jokes for adult viewers, so I don't see how Shrek is different?
The second Shrek is still hella funny, though it's more comedic and less sentimental. The third and fourth ones are not very good, on that I agree. Puss in Boots was slightly better, but not worth nominating here.

it's just kinda crass and shrill and full of unlikeable characters and possibly poisoned by what it influenced later but still doesn't deserve to be placed above even low quality Disney eg never mind all the other stuff

Do we have a ruling on Svankmajer's Faust? I'm guessing no, as it's acted mostly by real actors, but it's nothing without its animation (I would say it is at least as dependent on it as Roger Rabbit is on its cartoon characters).

As for Belson, I like "Samadhi" and "Phenomenon" a whole lot. I found a handful of rips of his films online and tried posting them to youtube and got copyright notices. Also got notices from posting stills of his work on my flickr. Whoever's in control of his work these days is a dick (and yeah technically that's him since they are basically 'fulfilling his wishes' that his work not be seen in low resolution).

the Jittlov short was everpresent in convention movie rooms in the early 80s -- I remember one Atlanta Fantasy Fair where they were pretty much showing it between every feature, since it was so short. Favorite bit -- the film clapper animated as a little bitey yappy dog.

Bad Luck Blackie 1949 - maybe my all-time favorite. Later period, but it's the best distillation of all of Avery's signatures rolled into one really simple, really funny cartoon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVRluE1ZMbY
Hamateur Night 1938 - really silly but I still love it. Lots of great Blanc voices too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-7CkuKmz_A
Who Killed Who 1943 - great parody of Whodunitshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlgHalJ1-p4
Sh-h-h-h 1955 - Tex's last directing effort. The soundtrack is really surreal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w0QoQX48kw

The Cat Returns
Is this The Cat Came Back? Because if not I will rep for that.
I've had these feeling all day that I am missing some a) really obvious always-on-TV classic animations and b) some personal favourites. Need to think about this.
― instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 25 May 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)
the cat returns is a non-miyazaki/non-takahata studio ghibli that's a loose spin-off from an earlier flick
wmc: patlabor 2 is a great flick but i'd be interested in seeing if you got anything out of it without a working knowledge of the patlabor world. it is also a meditative political thriller that also features a lot of dumb gags and giant robots beating the shit out of each other so i can't exactly say it's a fully adult vision of politics or thrillers.

I'm glad Strongo remembered Bambi Meets Godzilla! It seems that most of the one-joke premise Spike & Mike type stuff hasn't aged well to me. Guess it had its time and place (Midnight, stoned, 11th grade), same reason why I'd not fathom watching something like the Smurfs now, even though 7 year old me couldn't get enough of them. That said, though it's juvenile as all get out, this one has stayed funny with every viewing, which I chalk up to expert timing.

"Frog Baseball" and "The Spirit of Christmas" were originally intended as shorts not connected to a specific series... I think they should count. The original "Adventure Time" short was also 3 years before the series began.

My Roadrunner/Coyote noms, in addition to the 2 upthread.
Operation: Rabbit (1951) http://youtu.be/SoKA2OLJ8hsSecond ever Wile E Coyote appearance, but with Bugs. Always one of my favorites for the "My name is Mud" ending
Beep, Beep! (1952) http://youtu.be/TyqK7lZMf64 (dubbed in Russian, weirdly)I read a great anecdote about this one. It was the second Roadrunner cartoon ever shown on army/airforce bases. Apparently the guys liked it so much they'd show up, watch the short, skip the matinee altogether and come back for the next showing to see it again. They started saying "Beep Beep" to each other on base, even. :D
Stop! Look! And Hasten! (1954)http://youtu.be/5u7LrBvbYsYThis one has my favorite payoff

did you already cover Clockcleaners? and the one where Goofy excercises?

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)
In my dim hazy memory I know there are at least two different shorts (not sure of the studios involved) that involve a lion roaring over and over again in the jungle -- one of them wasn't all that imo, but the other one was so hysterically funny I was on the edge of wetting my pants. I haven't seen either of them in at least 30 years, but if I run across the funny one, it's definitely going on my ballot.
