For me it's going to be working in 100+ where even the breeze is warm, no shade and lots of dust! West Texas! And the AC just died in my jeep. On the bright side, at the grocery store you can practically buy every part of a cow or pig, and I'll be employed again.

it is year-long summer where i live, you best believe i crave a good cold winter. generally speaking, summer is really not a season i enjoy, since as soon as the sun shows up i get sunburned. i do like the evenings though, late dinners/drinks with friends.

I always think 'hey, summer, summer is Good, it'll be fun' and then it never is and I'm always disappointed.

However, this summer I am spending most of August in Canada. I have pretty high hopes for it: warm August nights, backyard barbecues, road trips, weddings, mountains, seeing my friends, petting my dog a lot. YESSSS

Summer kind of sucks. The kids are out of school, getting dumber and getting in the way. It's hot. Pool is nice but too crowded. heat makes me tired and too uncomfortable to cook.
And then there's the sweat.

But, it's fun to grill and drink.

Apparently some non-American ilxors are cranky because their summer has not yet arrived in full force, leaving skies drippy and overcast, and temperatures cool. In western Oregon I never expect anything different than that until Bastille Day, the Official Start of Oregon's Summer.

I definitely like summer, if I have a chance to get outdoors a lot. It is the best season for getting into the high mountains around here, which I love to do. I should manage to get out a fair bit this summer, so I am feeling optimistic about that. In fact, my wife and I are currently in deep discussions about whether I may be able to retire officially now. Please do not hate me.

Je55e, Sunday, 17 June 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

This year I have gotten very into the beach and that interest has made the heat more manageable.

There is a nice pool about a mile from my place which I hope to haunt this year. But it was like a steam bath here yesterday and a friend and I went there and it was CLOSED! So we wandered around the hot miserable sidewalks and went to see a movie in an ice cold theater.

Anyway, summer is fucking horrible but the misery is inescapable so I am trying to manage the pain with fun stuff.

Objectively or subjectively? They're definitely hotter objectively, but speaking subjectively, I never liked summer much as a kid, either. I did have a really good summers at 19 and 20. I lived w/ my parents (they live at the beach) and both years my college friends had summer rentals in the same town so my schedule went: ride bike to beach, hang out and get high, shower at friends' place, go to work, get off work and get drunk (I had a fake ID), ride bike home, repeat until Labor Day.

If it's in the 90s when I'm in Chicago in 2 weeks I really will stay in museums and bars (and the White Sox park) exclusively, as soon as they open.

I would invite NY crew to my rooftop pool but I can only have 2 guests a day, plus during the week it closes at 7pm (useless).

I have to say that I do feel a lot better about summer thanks to central AC.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

We have a central AC system, but it only has vents on the bottom floor of our house, which we don't occupy much and which stays mostly cool in the summer anyway. So every summer I have to drag out (and dismantle and clean) the windowshakers for the upper floor. They're really inconsistent (either freezing cold or struggling to keep up with the heat) and sometimes leak all over the floor. That's the thing I hate most about summer, these days.

how's life, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

We don't have central air but we got a couple of good window units with thermostat controls on them so the condenser turns on and off to maintain the selected temperature. Totally worth it, especially in the bedroom where we can keep it a nice consistent cool temp all night.

carl agatha, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:57 (twelve years ago) link

but the awfui humidity and having to put on sunscreen if I plan on being outdoors for more than half an hour and getting a headache if I forget to wear a hat generally makes me want summer to end somewhere in mid-july

Whenever I hear people elsewhere (aside from similar hellholes like Bakersfield/Phoenix/etc.) complain about heat, I laugh a little. They just don't know. one month passes...

One summer when I was in middle school, I got busted for sneaking out of my house. Grounded for three weeks, I mostly confined myself to my room, where the a/c from our central system never really reached. I sat around in my underwear all day up there. I brewed up some powdered lemonade mix, which I kept unrefrigerated in a caraffe in a bedside drawer for several days. I listened to 98 Rock, because I was trying to get into classic rock at the time. At least once an hour, they played"(Everything I Do) I Do It for You".

Feeling that version of summer, these days. Less beachy, breezy.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

I left NC bc of rednecks and general sucking including the bad, long summers. Summer is pretty bad in Chicago but at least it's short.

In winter I can get miserable sometimes, but once I'm indoors or on a bus or train, the discomfort passes within minutes. If it doesn't, I put on more clothes.

In summer OTOH, a few minutes outdoors takes literally hours to undo. And even when I finally cool off I'm clammy and pimply.

Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

If you're consistently cold, you can pick up a cheap space heater or electric blanket and very conveniently warm up. Heat is harder to beat. God, what I wouldn't do for cheap, portable AC.

At least at my last job in NC I could hide in the walk in cooler while it was slow. And take dust baths in the corn starch in dry storage.

The park by my work has its stupid misters on. What a waste of water and money. I was hoping that a couple of winters would put them out of commission, but they're still running. Even if they were effective in humid weather, the nozzles are at least 15 feet above an average adult's head and every drop of the mist gets blown away in the infamous Chicago wind.

Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

Hey, I felt that way this morning!

Honestly though, I have really enjoyed this (hot, miserable) summer more than any I can remember since childhood b/c I've gotten outdoors and done tons of stuff in it. Lots of swimming and laying and taking pictures on Lake Michigan (why did I not take advantage of our amazing beaches and waterfronts before???), cooking out, outdoor markets, and biking. I'm going to be disgustingly hot no matter what I do, and the difference between regular hot and doing-stuff hot is not so huge, and if I'm having fun, I'm spending a little less time hating summer.

though i work in a cubicle, it's in a pretty cool building. there is a skylight above my head, and the summer months, the sun shines directly on me and my desk for several hours in the late morning.

this makes me hot and makes it nearly impossible to read my computer screen. so i have to move to some other desk for a few hours, which is annoying as fuc.

Can someone answer a question about sweating please? When you bathe, does your skin absorb water that it swears out later? A friend who used to wear a lot of makeup (like on his face, neck, arms (lolgoth)) would sit in a hot place and sweat for a while after showering and before applying makeup bc he said he was getting rid of water from the shower. Is that BS?

I thought it was BS, but I sweat almost not at all, ever, and then last weekend, I showered and immediately went outside and I felt dripping on my foot and my head and arms were soaked and I wondered if the schvitzing goth was right.

Please help.

Je55e, Friday, 10 August 2012 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

I am sick in summer and it's the fucking worst. Summer colds should just not happen.

I have a summer cold too! It's been on for like a week and I'm sneezing my brains out. Drinking lots of hot water and taking shots of lemon juice.

It's a lot better than a month ago when I had pneumonia or back in may when I had wretched vomiting sickness.

If yr talking abt hot showers then yeah, they make you sweat because they raise yr body temp. I take cold ones in summer, tho.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 11 August 2012 05:19 (twelve years ago) link

That's horrible. If you are going to get married in JULY or AUGUST (why though? why????) do it inside in the air conditioning or you are a horrible person and I curse your union.

Or just don't invite me. That's okay, too.

I'm going to an outdoor wedding in early September which would be risky but it's in northern MI so it's going to be amazing.

Everybody should get married here:

I hope that song is their recessional.

Also: psyched to meet a joygoat.

Think the last 4 days may have been it, hope not. Was pretty bright sunshine until today when it was grey but humid.

Sorry, tonight is the solstice, it's all downhill from here.

I think I've taken advantage of the long "summer" evenings ONCE.

I start easing into seasonal depression after the summer solstice. Winter is right around the corner.

Jeff, Friday, 21 June 2013 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

It hasn't even gotten really hot yet around here. We set up an aboveground pool in our backyard and I couldn't even deal with it. I dipped my toddler in and she curled up into a little ball. Supposed to hit the 80s next week at least.

No summer here yet this year but tbh I'm happy enough about that. Give me eternal spring/autumn and I'd be happy.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 21 June 2013 12:42 (eleven years ago) link

Here it needs to rain some more and for there to be a big thunderstorm to clear the air.
