the rumors I'm seeing about either Luongo or Brodeur coming to Chicago are generating the most hilariously hateful comments from Hawkfans I know

it's not miami heat level, but they *were* the two best free agents available this year, and parise's from minnesota, and it's no doubt the best thing to happen to the team since it started up.

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 6 July 2012 06:36 (twelve years ago)

like, there is no other sport where there is the cult of the average player. When Ian LaPerriere was in LA he was BELOVED but he was only good for, like 5/15/150PMs a year.

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 6 July 2012 06:37 (twelve years ago)

also everyone in the league is one bad hit away from getting finished at this point which is why these contracts make no sense.

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 6 July 2012 06:42 (twelve years ago)

Also, the playoffs are a crapshoot, and it doesnt matter who has the top superstar: it's all about the hot goalie. Also when 15-17 guys are rotating in and out a minute at a time, it kind of minimizes the effect of the "superstar".

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 6 July 2012 13:17 (twelve years ago)

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicagoblackhawks/post/_/id/4671285/luongo-not-ruling-out-blackhawks

"Luongo was asked if he could handle hearing “Chelsea Dagger” -- the song the Hawks play when they score a goal -- as a member of the home team.

"I like that song,” Luongo said. “It's catchy. I heard it seven times in one game."

Luongo was referring to Game 4 of the 2010 Western Conference semifinals which the Hawks won 7-4, just one of several games in recent years in which the Hawks put up a flurry of goals against him. "

Luongo's humor does not inspire confidence.

You legit think the Coyotes uni isn't worse than the Wings one? Then you need to remove yr head from yr ass in order to see clearly. The Blue Jackets too man. The Ducks. In other sports there are at least twenty teams w/worse unis than the Red Wings. As a Raiders fan I hate every other team in the AFC West at least as much as you hate the Wings but you won't hear me claiming that the...ok bad example all those other teams in the AFC West look like fuckin clowns, lol at those assholes, Raider Nation baby, JUST WIN, fuck yes

so does nashville have to match the exact terms of philly's contract offer? or just the total compensation?

i've always been surprised by teams' reticence to do this -- lundqvist could have been had a few years ago and i'm not sure how the rangers could have matched with gomez/drury and/or redden on the payroll.

When's the last time they got this many people

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 15:38 (twelve years ago)

according to wiki it holds 14,500 for hockey, making it easily the smallest building in the league.

oh, being in nassau county was never a great idea, but it's also hard to separate their attendance problems from the fact that they've played in four playoff series in the last 20 years and lost them all.

playing in a half-assed building with no seats at one end doesn't seem as promising as playing in hartford or quebec or seattle or toronto, that's all. i wouldn't recommend kansas city, but they already have an arena and would probably give the league a great deal.

There is a strange dichotomy in NHL ownership. The owners, whether as companies or individuals, are extremely wealthy. Yet many teams reportedly lose money every year, and with few exceptions even the profitable clubs don’t make that much money. Why would phenomenally successful men sink money into a black hole like that? Is it simply a case of viewing hockey teams as luxuries where they can afford to bleed red a little?

While non-financial considerations undoubtedly come into play, the simplest explanation is that the financial picture for various NHL teams is a lot healthier than it is typically reported to be.

bill simmons takes time out of his busy schedule of nba/pr0n/80s movies-watching to shit on gary bettman. he narrowly avoids saying 'can we make this happen?'

sounds like the hardline clubs are those in non-hockey markets like nashville/tampa/columbus that need extra concessions from the players to survive. philly daily news reported that flyers owner ed snider is getting fed up and wants to play, although the league has denied any dissension in the ranks.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Detroit Red Wings prospect faces charges under Michigan's tough "super drunk" designation following a traffic stop during which police discovered him clad in a Teletubby costume.

According to a Grand Rapids police report obtained by MLive.com, Riley Sheahan twice registered a blood alcohol level of .30 percent when tested in jail after his arrest on Oct. 29.

Police say the 20-year-old Grand Rapids Griffins center from St. Catharines, Ontario, was wearing the costume of a purple Teletubby known as Tinky Winky during the stop.

i hope detroit/columbus enjoy their eastern schedule before the coyotes move to markham/quebec

sofatruck, Thursday, 28 February 2013 14:42 (twelve years ago)

so the flames signed avs restricted free agent ryan o'reilly to an offer sheet the other day. the avs matched it, so that's that.

had the avs refused to match it, the flames would have given up first- and third-round picks to get o'reilly. but then he would have had to pass through waivers (because he played in the khl after the lockout ended), meaning the flames would have immediately lost him, probably to last-place columbus, and gotten nothing in return.

every hippie that goes home bloody feels like a martyr back in the city (dan m), Monday, 4 March 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)

I haven't heard anybody use 'unbeaten', i only heard the term 'point streak' or 'unbeaten in regulation'.

We've had 3 amazing streaks in the last 3 seasons.

Also, I'd got with win-lose only.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 4 March 2013 20:42 (twelve years ago)

i would get rid of OT during regular season. concussion-related arguments could be made to support this but if you're going to have the skills competition winner/loser scenario you might as well get right to it and send everyone home at a reasonable hour

Last I heard the Bolts were doing fine. If the Panthers were ever to move to QC, the Division D could take the Bolts and the Division C could take the Blue Jackets.
All in all, this new division system paves the way for an expansion. Bettman won't say it, but it seems fairly obvious.

What really matters tho: can we go back to the old naming of divisions? Smythe, Patrick, Adams and Norris please!

a) ...wrt spending space re: cap

I don't belong in that class (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 10 May 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

The Wild have an impressive prospect pool iirc. Ryan Suter is cap well spent. Heatley, Gilbert and Backstrom's contract are up soon. I wouldn't mind the cap as much as Yeo, whom I think is in the lower tier of NHL coaches.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:44 (twelve years ago)

okay then where are you from/who is yr team (also in baseball)/why

mookieproof, Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:04 (twelve years ago)

oh it's complicated. Parents are from France, born in Houston and grew up and live in Montreal, hated the Habs from the go and loved the Rangers cause I had a thing for New York even as a kid. Rangers fan ever since. As for baseball, well I discovered baseball a little before the Giants run and the wins inspired me enough to 1. love baseball and 2. become a Giants fan. I was also a little depressed and the win just made me happy.

Dunno if leaving Letang out and keeping Fleury is super brillant. They know better than me.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 13 June 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

fleury is signed for two more seasons (at $5m per) and is unlikely to get a raise; letang is signed for one more and will probably be in line to double his current $3.5m salary.

with crosby/malkin making $18m between them, i don't know that it's feasible to spend that much on an occasionally brilliant offensive defenseman prone to brutal lapses in his own zone. the pens are actually pretty deep with young defensemen. and if you're not gonna re-sign letang, it might be worth a trade now while you've some leverage/he's coming off a norris-finalist season.

There are a lot of fireworks going off outside my house right now.

Pretty f'n wild finish. Love boooing Bettman.

Just Elevate... And Decide In The Air -- Above the Rim (dan m), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 03:12 (eleven years ago)

Hate Bettman as much as anyone, but I still feel sorry for him every year, all the same. But I guess the guy's such an egotist that he'd rather be booed than stay behind the scenes. Bad publicity is better than etc.

Really, wouldn't it be better for everybody if the NHL appointed an official ambassador-alumni from each team to present the cup, like maybe having Bobby Hull or Orr (whichever one turns out to be appropriate) standing by to do the deed?

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 03:53 (eleven years ago)

i can't feel sorry for bettman he deserves all he gets.

Just Elevate... And Decide In The Air -- Above the Rim (dan m), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:48 (eleven years ago)

pretty hard to believe that the deciding game of a stanley cup final featured both teams pulling their goalie

also that the boston media (?) chose bruins for the 1st and 3rd stars of the game, although that was probably done with a few minutes left lol

sportswriters furiously re-writing ledes

mookieproof, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 23:32 (eleven years ago)

did bettman get booed in la last year? probably some, i don't remember. but five of the last six cups have been won on the road, so the fans are gonna be in a bad mood

and if anaheim and carolina and tampa booed him, they've got no clue

mookieproof, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 23:41 (eleven years ago)

i remember a notable lack of booing last year

Also coming soon: decreased cap, realignment, a Brave New World.

kris letang has (apparently) refused an eight-year $56m deal from the penguins

the penguins have (apparently) refused a counter-offer of a long-term deal between $7.5m-$8m per year

the difference doesn't seem like much, but after crosby/malkin the penguins don't have much room and it seems accepted that letang could get at least $8m on the open market (although i question the wisdom of that)

mookieproof, Friday, 28 June 2013 02:36 (eleven years ago)

Letang for 7.0m+ is bonkers.

sources suggest the flyers will sign claude giroux to an eight-year deal worth $8.3m per season

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 July 2013 17:47 (eleven years ago)

@DarrenDreger
Huge trade in the works. Boston and Dallas close on a deal sending Tyler Seguin to Stars for Loui Eriksson. Other parts involved as well.

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 July 2013 18:07 (eleven years ago)

danny briere to the habs for two years/$8m

briere always seemed like the kind of guy glen sather would wildly overpay for, but i guess it's hard to compete with the flyers

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:23 (eleven years ago)

@Real_ESPNLeBrun
Habs GM Marc Bergevin reached out to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren to get feedback on Briere. Holmgren had nothing but great things to say

lololol
