BUT YAY EXCITED.
no dude it was someone else's who didn't use my clever ID number system and I forgot to fix up their ballot when I was doing that, so when I was running my clever vote-counting program it wasn't getting counted properly. But now it is.

Glad you made the mistake, because I never would've known checked the Russian Winnie Pooh otherwise, that one looks awesome!
― Tuomas, Monday, 16 July 2012 08:51 (thirteen years ago)
Since we're not going to returning to Only Yesterday, then, the wikipedia page on it makes it sound like a great leap forward of, er, bringing indiecore to anime. This is something that I'm sort of aware of as a thing - I'm curious if this is down to Only Yesterday, or whether it was always there just under the surface.

I think I'm most interested in seeing the distribution of shorts:features. I had both but definitely weighted toward the latter.
― emil.y, Monday, 16 July 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)
Same, though the WB shorts went a long way towards balancing out my ballot.
― Nothing cracks a turtle like Leeeon Uris (Leee), Monday, 16 July 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
Masterfully obnoxious rendition of "Five O'Clock Whistle" in "Little Red Riding Rabbit."
― eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Monday, 16 July 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)
i really had no idea how to rate shorts vs. features, just tossed it all in and hoped for the best.

― Tuomas, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 06:44 (thirteen years ago)
i was one of the three votes for for 'gandahar', dope movie, rad concepts
― Lamp, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 07:00 (thirteen years ago)
I'm a little shocked by Where the Wind Blows' placing, I thought it would pick up some notice from the Threads discussion in the horror movies poll. On the other hand, I can see it being a niche character piece and it's not exactly in the canon - Grave of the Fireflies at 98 would amaze me as a comparison.
I will nonetheless go completely ape if The Wrong Trousers, with all of those handicaps, places outside the top 10 :)
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 10:59 (thirteen years ago)
i'm expecting the unexpected, i think the canon has much less stranglehold here. i only voted for one WB short, for example.
― ledge, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 11:14 (thirteen years ago)
i put The Wrong Trousers very high on my ballot but seriously dude you need to stop talking about it until it shows up
― some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 12:22 (thirteen years ago)
I intend to bring it up every time there's a film well-regarded in the UK and unknown in the US to compare it to. So, not until it shows up.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)
wallace and gromit are not unknown in the US
― some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 12:40 (thirteen years ago)
Gandahar is by the same dude as Planet Sauvage, yes? I had to cut that from my ballot as I've only seen clips and not the whole thing all the way through, but his animation style really is amazing.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)
Sad, I'm reminded that I didn't beg my pop hard enough to have him take me to see Gandahar when it played in theatres (as Light Years in the US).

I'm not sure what you mean here? As in, we should read the book instead and thus the film is worthless? Does that mean you've never enjoyed any adaptation ever? No matter how skilfully directed/acted/edited?

― emil.y, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)
Wings of Honneamise is great; there's such loving attention to detail in the construction of its alternate Earth, and it's amazing they managed to produce a big-budget sci-fi movie that's essentially a slow-tempo meditation on what drives humanity forward. It's kinda like a anime counterpart to 2001: Space Odyssey, except that it's not boring.

too low for Bimbo's Initiation!
I'm slightly less hardline about this as a principle than when I was 7. but in this specific case, Briggs is so warm and inviting at first, and (as in all his work) the audience is drawn in so much by how much of a hand-made, one-creator artifact each page and panel is, with the colour so splotched and unblended; and then the adaptation hurls all of that charm away with herky-jerky motions and smoothed-out character models with dead eyes and iirc a really stiff clash btwn flat-colour figures and immobile painted bgs.
UGH I just looked at the first minute or so on youtube to check my decades-old memory and opening with real news footage! having him read TV coverage in the newspaper? crossing back and forth btwn film and cartoon! COMPOSITING FILMED SKIES INTO CARTOON BGS! him on the bus where Jim is animated by one person or team, the teenage couple on the other side are obviously animated by an apprentice team, rocking that 30's bouncy motion, LOOPING one second's action even though they then move afterwards, and the couple up the back being non-animated part of the background UGH UGH UGH
The Snowman can fuck off too imo (actually I've never seen it. I did see the Irn-Bru ad that parodies it, on the internets, though.)

― Team Safeword (Abbbottt), Thursday, 19 July 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)
Kung Fu Panda is one where I spent some time reconsidering where to put it in the ballot - it's shiny and corporate and it has a terrible sequel, but on the other hand it's flawless for what it is, it's funny and fat-positive and a great Kung Fu film made by people who clearly love Kung Fu. That trailer, though, is terrible.

Maybe this is a good time to mention: Ren & Stimpy animator/genius/cool dude John Kricfalusi was a guest on the Nerdist podcast on Friday -- all kinds of great stuff in here, including a killer story about an adventure he had with Bob Clampett. lots of stuff about the old school animators, the horrible 80's years, everything. http://www.nerdist.com/2012/08/nerdist-podcast-john-k/

Also recently found on a hidden web 1.0 page with several UK and European based shorts were in some sort of mid-60's competition.. Clips for Dirty Birdy and Wallace & Gromit were among the dozens of nominees. Years later, my friends found this with no context of what it could be about and we decided it was creepy as hell, and the 20-seconds of dialogue have stuck in my head ever since... "Come from there. Who's your parents? Don't know. Grew up in an orphanage." I just did 20-minutes of Google searching to determine the short is called "Ugly Head," and I've been wanting to view the entire thing since 11 years ago, just out of curiousity.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkpP_U-hjD4

it’s with great honor that I report to you that an hour’s worth of rare silent-era animation from my collection will be airing on Turner Classic Movies, *tonight*, at 12am eastern/9pm pacific. For this very special and long overdue broadcast event, we’ve curated several rare, once-thought-lost, historically significant or just downright funny cartoons produced in New York City between 1907 and 1926. That’s not all, though--TCM host Robert Osborne, with Jerry Beck co-hosting, are also presenting both Fleischer features, a block of UPA cartoons, and The Adventures of Prince Achmed in addition to the early NYC shorts. It’s not to be missed! I hope some or many of you can tune in or set your DVR in time. Never actually seen "Little Red Hot Riding Hood" before, or at least not all the way through. Pretty good stuff! Takes a few minutes to really get rolling but some killer sight gags along the way - love the wolf's contraption for giving extra applause and table-pounding - and the climax at Grandma's is a real outpouring of technique and excitement (even if the content itself is kind of misogynistic and gross).

Caught Emperor's New Groove once on TV and ended up sitting straight through it. Don't remember a thing about it, and wouldn't watch it again I think but it was definitely a "Hey, wow, this is genuinely entertaining!" That was this period where there were really really clear lines between their "A" team mega-musical blockbusters and their "B" team screwball slice-of-life movies and the latter were pretty great IIRC - Lilo and Stitch is the other main one.
Laputa is great but definitely not my top Miyazaki. Great adventure yarn is right. The story elements are all exactly where you'd expect to find them and the characters are heartwarming in the right places and so on, but the design work, animation, and atmosphere put it over the top. Couple of spectacular set pieces. It also really convincingly sells the majesty, mystery and dreaminess of the mysterious lost civilization from the past; the robots are super-cool, all-powerful, but also fundamentally un-knowable, and that goes for Laputa itself. He doesn't rush you past it. Interesting to consider all that in light of the way he ended up playing the end of the Nausicaa manga, which takes a much dimmer view of the ancient, lost civilization, and the robot-equivalents that it left behind.
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 December 2012 04:08 (thirteen years ago)
Couple of spectacular set pieces.
The robot casually eviscerating the Government fortress is THE Miyazaki setpiece as far as I'm concerned. Chills just thinking about it.

― ILX is not a non-profit — we are just not profitable (forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 December 2012 07:50 (thirteen years ago)
My fault for watching the Disney dub perhaps, but the kids in laputa were seriously annoying, the boy especially. Wasn't mad keen on the pirates either. Agree about the set pieces, and the wonderful design and mystery of the castle, but overall it was a bit too childish for me (as distinct from childlike, e.g. Totoro).
― ledge, Monday, 24 December 2012 08:30 (thirteen years ago)
That was this period where there were really really clear lines between their "A" team mega-musical blockbusters and their "B" team screwball slice-of-life movies and the latter were pretty great IIRC
funnily enough Emperor's New Groove started out as the former before being redeveloped
― Number None, Monday, 24 December 2012 09:24 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, never watch the disney miyazaki dubs, they are always inferior
― ILX is not a non-profit — we are just not profitable (forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 December 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, exactly! Also the big chase at the beginning. I'm always wowed by the idea of people sitting there animating every shattered piece of wood flying up from the railway, etc.
I have only seen Laputa in subs so I dunno about the Disney voices, but the kids are slightly annoying in the original, again just for being sort of stock types more than for any other reason. OTOH I kind of lose interest when Miyazaki gets more and more into weirdness for weirdness's sake; Howl, for example, seemed to me to be trying to hard to throw lots of different concepts together in order to create a dreamlike melange, but coming out feeling forced and awkward. Just recently re-read the Nausicaa manga for the billionth time and I feel it pulls off a really nice balance between archetypes and a consistent unfamiliar weirdness and originality. I'm convinced that's his most compelling and unified work... a shame it'll never be half as well-known as any of the films.
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 December 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
Oh I might have to read the manga in that case. The film of Nausicaa is a wee bit dull IMO.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 24 December 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
I would agree with that totally - it's probably the one of his that I have the least interest in re-watching actually. But it only covers maybe the first fifth of the manga, and that with a lot of the subtlety stripped out. The manga was a long, long-term project and had a lot of room to develop nuances, minor characters, people changing allegiances, all that, and the nature-loving theme sustains more and more challenges to its core. It's definitely a conversation-starter IMO.
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 December 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
just saw laputa in theaters - amazing, much more action packed than I had remembered! (for some reason I thought it was a more chill movie showing two kids chilling on a giant fortress]

I made the mistake of reading the manga first, then watching the film -- the manga's scope is absolutely jawdropping, it's on a par with Kirby's New Gods stuff, except Miyazaki had the chance to fully realize it. And for something done in a super-deformed style, IIRC it gets into some heady, nuanced realpolitik material. Or, what Doctor Casino sez.
Am I wrong in remembering that Miyazaki he only started the manga as a way to develop the film, sort of like Arthur C. Clarke and Kubrick re: 2001?
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Monday, 24 December 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)
Huh, I'd never heard that! I know he took several long hiatuses from it - would be interesting to go back and track the manga against those gaps, see if there's major shifts in tone or anything. Certainly there are some characters in whom he seems to gain interest later on, and certain settings/large chunks of plot that are contained in the last sections...but they're also foreshadowed early. (Sorry if this is taking us afield from the thread topic - I just don't have much to say about the Grinch, sadly!)
I know the manga only from the old "Perfect Collection" trade paperbacks in four volumes...I believe it's been rereleased since then, maybe in correct/non-flipped order and possibly with a new translation? There are one or two places that I recall the old one being sort of stilted or just confusing (with regard to the two "emperor-brother" characters).
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 December 2012 22:45 (thirteen years ago)
No need to apologize to me on not discussing the Grinch -- I just remember when I watched it that I sided whole-heartedly and unironically with him because I thought that the Whos were so ugly that they deserved privation.
Aha, my memory serves! Well, sorta:
According to the "Birth of Studio Ghibli" featurette, Miyazaki only wrote the manga because Studio Ghibli film producer Toshio Suzuki was unable to get funding for a film that was not based on a manga.[2] However, other sources tell a different story: Miyazaki started the manga on the condition that it would never be made into a film. He later agreed to do a fifteen-minute OVA, but Animage editors eventually convinced him to make an entire feature-length film.[3]
Yeah, there's a new 2-volume HC box set with non-inverted pages now -- don't know why I haven't even thought about getting it, considering how much I like it. Ah well, Xmas present to myself!
Anyway, I'll stow the Nausicaa talk, you know, in case the film version or any other Miyazaki ranks... ¬_¬
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Monday, 24 December 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)
Though of course if you have more to say, don't let me stop you! Who knows if/when Nausicaa might reappear...
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Monday, 24 December 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)
The Nausicaa manga is SO cluttered and storyboardy, not surprised that it was meant to be a stepping stone to the film.glad to own it tho'. would like to buy that slipcover box.

re: Nausicaa - "cluttered" i'll give you - there is a definite filling-in of every frame with detail, and some of the action sequences end up sort of hard to follow for that reason. Storyboardy...huh. I'll have to think about that next time I read. Not saying I'd disagree, just that it hasn't ever distracted from my reading experience.

Woah, Ninja Scroll? Really? I admit I've never seen it the whole way through but I associate with, for lack of a better word, ''Manga Man Says...'' anime...stuff that was in a lot of rental places before anime had its bigger breakthrough later in the 90s, and which found an audience mainly on ultraviolence and titillation, like, woah, these Japanese cartoons have gore and swearing!!! But now I'm thinking maybe I misjudged it?
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 25 December 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)
You're basically right in your judgement, plus it has a very straightforward and rather cliched story, but it's still entertaining, with great action scenes.

If memory serves, Ninja Scroll didn't make the official nominations list for the poll, so that's an impressive showing for a write-in! Mononoke was my first Miyazaki -- didn't love it (the violence in the opening scene stunned me a little bit, maybe I didn't recover), sort of a remix of Nausicaa.

Remix of Nausicaa is exactly how I remember it. Haven't seen this since the US theatrical run. Remember it being great-looking but weirdly cold, with all of the characters feeling strangely distant and wooden. Would be down for watching this one again if just to marvel at the forest ghost stuff and things like that gif above.

Just watched that one, thanks for the link. It's about like I remember it from when I was a kid, maybe a little slower and less completely nutso? In my mind these things are always Daffy and Bugs just upping the ante continuously, getting closer and closer to berserk but it's a little more evenly paced than that. Not a negative, though, this thing has some great gags.
God, I'd forgotten what a delicious MORON Elmer Fudd was! He wouldn't be funny at all except that he really is simple-minded enough to be fooled by these jokers and their terrible costumes and tricks, it makes him sympathetic in a way that, say, Yosemite Sam never is. Great character.

the pacing in chuck jones cartoons is always really deliberate -- the 'zany' stuff's more early '40s, when it was more explicitly cartoonish and crazy. there's at least three cartoons with that same basic plot but the one that always reduced me to hysterics was 'you keep out of this! he doesn't HAVE to shoot you now!'

I need to re-read Animal Man.
Next batch: loads of Disney.
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Friday, 28 December 2012 05:34 (thirteen years ago)
Animal Man is great.
I love Roadrunner cartoons. That one in particular feels a little funky; I think it's an early one before the formula got exactly refined, and before some of the iconic bits (like the super-slow fall) were even in place. But they're all basically the same in some sense. The format does have the problem of being fundamentally episodic, with each gag setting up, ending, and then fading to black before another one starts. In that sense, you could basically stick every Roadrunner segment in a computer and tell it to spit out a five-minute cartoon and you'd never know the difference except for changes in animation style and background painting. The cartoons don't really build and they rarely have much momentum or payoff; watching that one, I was surprised that the ending actually bothered to pick back up a thread that was teased much earlier in the episode.
Thing is, if the gags are inventive, the whole thing works. It's just enough of a premise on which to hang whatever bonkers sight gags and surprise pratfalls the writers could think of. You never are in any doubt that the coyote will fail, so they genius is coming up with a way that the latest ACME invention can fail that doesn't occur to you before it happens. Some great ones in that short, especially the one with the boxing-glove. And no matter how many times you see one, a well-made "imaginary train is real" gag will still do it.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 December 2012 06:39 (thirteen years ago)
Yes, the copy/paste nature of Roadrunner shorts is very formulaic, and hasn't aged particularly well for me (and "Beep, Beep" is the only one that I voted for). I also get the vague sense that as a child, I in fact rooted for Wile E. Coyote for some reason (partly because of my love of nature documentaries, which rarely featured actual roadrunners).
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Friday, 28 December 2012 07:06 (thirteen years ago)
Sledgehammer is total classic of course.
― ledge, Friday, 28 December 2012 09:33 (thirteen years ago)

This is a great movie. I'm not sure why I saw it in the theater, in my twenties - might have been the only appealing thing playing while I was home for the summer. Anyway, it just charmed the bejeezus out of me. Loved how anarchically destructive and nutso Stitch was, and how convincing the human cast was...Lilo is maybe a little precocious but it played well IIRC. "Oh no, that's from my blue period!!" I remember not liking it as much on the second viewing but I might have just not waited long enough in between.

xp Apologies if the gif is not from the right movie, which I've never seen.
TBH never thought of him that way! Mostly because there seems to be an unwritten rule that predatory animals typically figure as villains (and the corollary, that herbivorous animals are the protagonists), and the novelty with RR+WEC then would be that this rule gets inverted.
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Friday, 28 December 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)
idk that's like considering Tom the protagonist of Tom & Jerry films, or Elmer Fudd.
Lilo & Stitch way way too low, obv.
― Andrew Farrell, Friday, 28 December 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)
Wait, which one's Tom and which Jerry? Anyway, I considered the mouse the protagonist, at least!
― Only Built For Cuban Linux (Leee), Friday, 28 December 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)
I think Tom & Jerry and Roadrunner both do kind of interesting things with the protagonist/bad guy formula, but I am not really going to claim expertise here since folks here have voted for single episodes whereas I'd struggle to single out any.
But as a kid I always thought it was pretty evenly spread out whether you felt sorry for Tom or Jerry (though I am a crazy cat lady so I bring my own special variety of insanity bias), and while Wile E. is more obviously a Bad Guy he's more or less the focus of the show while Roadrunner doesn't do anything interesting except dash through making annoying noises and foiling plans - I mean maybe you don't exactly root for WEC, there's nothing about RR as a character to root for - whether you are invested in the coyote or the coyote's comeuppance, he is the character
(Wacky Races does this too, I guess, and probably many other things. anyway, like I said, it's been a while, so this may all be crazy talk. also pls excuse typos as I am too lazy to go and look for my glasses)

Yeah, I watched Lion King on a plane last year and I don't think it's held up that well. The animation still looks great, and there's some good songs, but the basic plot is hackneyed and IMO a bit rushed in the key places - Simba's growing-up has to happen basically all at once. Plus I think all the blood-as-destiny "true king" type stuff is on the dicey side, and Timon and Pumbaa are sort of the harbingers of all Dreamworksian fart joke animation.

Phantasm one of the best Timm offerings imo, action set pieces are awesome, unexpectedly good romance angle, best motion adaptation of origin that has added bonus of having nothing to do with Year One. Plus, typically great Joker involvement. Operatic. May be my favorite Batfilm, full stop.

Creature Comforts YES. Ratatouille NO. Ok maybe watching it in the back of a car sandwiched between two toddlers wasn't the best environment but the 'rat driving chef by pulling his hair' schtick didn't really work for me, 'restaurant owner sacrificing reputation for ready meal millions' plot was lame, 'main character turns out by quirk of fate to be heir to restaurant' made me rmde. Didn't even see the end of the film, didn't care. Ghost in the Shell I saw not so long ago but can't remember what I thought of it, which probably means I didn't think too much of it.

Nausicaa is less cloyingly childish than Laputa but it's hard to care too much about the Ohmu. Little fox-squirrel is adorable though.

Ah, good to see some Svankmajer. Not a big fan of Kiki, but mainly because it is so much *for children* in comparison to other Miyazaki works - this doesn't mean it's a bad film, just not for me. Perfect Blue I voted for and loved when I saw it but it could benefit from a re-watch to bump my memory. Sad about Satoshi Kon, Paprika was also on my ballot.

― ばかザッピ (zappi), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:56 (twelve years ago)
So happy to see Perfect Blue here, and at a good position too. I voted it pretty high in my horror poll, and it got absolutely nowhere. It's probably my favourite Kon work, perhaps simply because the (psychological thriller) genre is most up my alley. Kon had so much more to do - his death still stings like crazy.
Secret of NIMH is an old fave, and Kiki's Delivery Service was the first Ghibli film I watched with my niece (needless to say, she insisted on seeing more over the next few weeks).

'Alice is a fantastic, in the literal sense, piece of work and deservedly placed high. The narration though nearly derails the work. I understand there's some fan-edits which excises a lot of the 'said thhe Mad Hatter', although I'd love to be some purist backing the director's vision I can't help but think that Svankmajer got that wrong.

Kiki's Delivery Service is my favorite Ghibli and one of my favorite films period. I really think it's just about perfect. Even the way the hairs on the brooms stick out is dead-on.
Haven't seen Nemo or Ratatouille, have heard good things about both, somewhat more interested in the latter as Nemo's stills seem to kinda all look the same - underwater, bright-colored fish. Yeah, dunno. Haven't seen NIMH since I was a kid, read the book once as an adult though and was really impressed with how much cool stuff was going on in there.

"I have lived in this tree, in this same hollow," the owl said, "for more years than anyone can remember. But now, when the wind blows hard in winter and rocks the forest, I sit here in the dark, and from deep down in the bole, down near the roots, I hear a new sound. It is the sound of strands of wood creaking in the cold and snapping one by one. The limbs are falling; the tree is old, and it is dying. Yet I cannot bring myself, after so many years, to leave, to find a new home and move into it, perhaps to fight for it. I, too, have grown old. One of these days, one of these years, the tree will fall, and when it does, if I am still alive, I will fall with it."

Loved the Persepolis comic, never got around to the movie, just seemed like it'd be the filmed version of what I read, or does it do anything particular to surpass that? Kind of surprised it would rank above Snow White and all these other things.
Yellow Submarine is kind of a lumpy, awkwardly-flowing film but there is some great imagination in it and cool animation when it's not just the weird too-smooth rotoscoped human movements. And obviously, great music.
Fantastic Planet looks awesome! Will throw that on the to-do list.

Feel like now is the time to mention that if I were voting all over again, ParaNorman would get lots of points.
― autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)
Laika took their Coraline experience and made ParaNorman and it was just completely stellar technically. The art direction, stop-motion, VFX, and even the 3D were just world fucking class. And the plot was killer and surprisingly dark and the characters were all delightful.
― autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)
Loved it, though the climax could have used less telling and more showing. Like I got what was happening a good three minutes before Norman had finished explaining it.

Overrated. Coraline is better IMO.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 10 January 2013 18:14 (twelve years ago)
I thought the plot of ParaNorman was pretty much the weakest part, the 'twist' was pretty clear from early on once you start treating it as the Tim Burton film it clearly is.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 10 January 2013 19:44 (twelve years ago)
well I guess it wasn't the plotting per se that impressed me as the themes the plot touched on, especially the parallel drawn between Norman's issues and mental illness/LD.
― autistic boy is surprisingly good at basketball (silby), Thursday, 10 January 2013 23:16 (twelve years ago)
also I went in sort of expecting the movie to be lots of wandering around talking to theme-park ghosts of various flavors (civil war, sad teen, amelia earhart) so that it had a much more interesting story to tell (not just a zany adventure w/ ghosts) was pleasing to me

― sunn o))) dude (Leee), Friday, 11 January 2013 05:34 (twelve years ago)
Should probably watch Coraline and, apparently, ParaNorman. Roger Rabbit I'm guessing remains great fun. Toy Story the weakest of the franchise - Sid is an actively uncompelling villain - and most of its charm comes from the fact that it's your introduction to all of the frankly wonderful characters, not least the claw game aliens <3 <3 <3

Actually #14 #12 and #11 are all films I expected to see in the top 10!
I actually think Toy Story 2 might be the fourth-placed Pixar film, which is really fucked up.
Totoro, Spirited Away, Akira to come surely.
Aladdin & Beauty and the Beast are the remaining Disney princesses, I have no reading on the whole genre, so I don't know if it'd be more of a travesty to appear this much higher than the others, or not at all.
Iron Giant maybe, Belleville certainly not.
Aaand a few shorts? I will speculate What's Opera Doc? and Duck Amuck, because that's what I voted for.
Write in vote for Bully For Bugs at #1 :)

Paprika is a visual feast, but plotwise I think it's Kon's weakest movie by a good margin. The story and dialogue feel pedantic and under-developed, so it feels too much like a "typical" anime movie.

I know I've seen Millenium Actress, but up until seeing it in the countdown here I had no memory of doing so, and it remains a very faint and hazy sense of deja vu. When did I see it? Why? What was it about? I have only the faintest notions. There's something kind of off-putting, to me, about Kon's (or Studio Madhouse's?) animation style... the character designs have this sort of wooden, distant quality. It's maybe an intentional effect, fitting the themes of the story, or maybe they're going for realism and my eyes, accustomed to very stylized anime, don't really process it as such?

millennium actress is really good & sorta uniquely lyrical i think?, i am maybe not qualified to say 'uniquely' because i am not great with japanese film or with modern animated cinema, but i feel like it imbues some fairly standard settings & scenarios with a weird emotional pitch. which you can say about miyazaki too, right. like kiki's delivery service is such a reassuringly depression-permeated kids movie.

Really want to watch Akira anew some day -- loved it as a teenager, when this whole anime thing was pretty new to me. This was in the mid-90s, in a small town in Norway, where this stuff wasn't really distributed, so this stuff was almost mythical to us -- occasionally someone would come back from Oslo bearing the gift of a tape or two of some Manga release. The highlights as I recall it were _Akira_ and _Ghost in the Shell_. Also watched _Fist of the North Star_ a bunch of times, but I didn't exactly like it. _Wings of Honneamise_ bored the hell out of me -- clearly it needed more exploding heads -- but I'm kinda curious to see it again now.
Come to think of it, I've hardly seen any of the Disney cartoons that didn't come out in my lifetime. Have some vague memories of having seen _Pinocchio_ at a birthday party and being REALLY disturbed by the donkey stuff. But I might just have read one of the childrens book adaptations of the movie. (Definitely didn't read the -original- book)
_Triplets of Belleville_ is a movie I'm kinda wondering if I disliked so much simply because of the enthusiasm with which it was recommended. I mostly remember finding the drawings really ugly. Oh, and the goddamn voodookaka bullshit songs.
Do we have a thread about early non-cartoon animations? I plan to spend some evening on Youtube and Archive.org watching shit like the 1912 The Cameraman’s Revenge. Figure I should put together a little playlist first.
Really enjoying the thread btw, though I didn't take any part in the voting. So far you've inspired me to order _Paprika_ and the first English omnibus of the Akira comics at the library; vaguely recall digging Katushiro Otomo's _Domu: A Child's Dream_ back in the days.

I wasn't a huge fan of Belleville, but I loved that the dog was tricked into paddling across the Atlantic with a piece of caramel, and was still chewing on it when they arrived on shore in America.

Belleville really got to me as a tear-jerker; as I've said on ILX before, I lost my mother about a year before seeing it, and the tireless selfless love of the mother character just got to me. I also remember finding the dog really charming, and I don't have any general affection for dogs to support that. Fourth-best cartoon of all time, no, but I can see how it racked up a bunch of votes.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)
I loved Belleville. Perhaps not the fourth best animation of all time, but hey, The Incredibles is DEFINITELY NOT top ten of all time, this isn't a definitive list, it's what ilxors who could be bothered to vote did in fact vote for.

Also, I caught Up on telly over Christmas, and I did actually get a little weepy at the start. Still hate that style of animation, though, and the rest of the film wasn't any great shakes (not terrible, though; I certainly didn't balk at the talking dogs or anything).

#3: What's Opera, Doc?dir. Chuck Jones1957, USA448 points, 14 voteshttp://i.imgur.com/pHS7H.jpgfilm higher res film (US-only?)
Triplets of Belleville is the first since #20 Coraline that I haven't seen and the first since #45 The Wizard of Speed and Time that I haven't even heard of. I guess I was living in some cultural black hole in 2003. And for every mention of it I should surely have come across since...
― Bill Goldberg Variations (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:18 (twelve years ago)
Triplets of Belleville is great but not top 10 material imo. Duck Amuck & What's Opera, Doc? however i can get 100% behind. good job!

chuck jones did fantastically in this poll
― Mordy, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)
It kind of disappeared (until the Illusionist came along), why is why some of us are a little surprised to see it that high.
v happy with the current two, really second guessing myself about the #2 slot (assuming Spirited Away takes #1)
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:24 (twelve years ago)
All of Chuck Jones' (apart from 8-Ball Bunny) are written by Michael Maltese as well, though I confess I don't know the system well enough to know if he is a hyper-genius, or just the guy who got his name on the credits for the work of a team.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)
Still kicking myself for not pushing harder to get Svankmajer's Faust accepted as a nomination, tbh. It's my favourite of his, and easily as animated as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and by all rights should be making an appearance around now in a true and correct poll.
Really? It's much much better than Kiki, which placed. And I'd say it's way better than Totoro in pacing and story, though Totoro has the edge in CATBUS level characters.
― emil.y, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)
Rewatching "What's Opera, Doc?" right now for the first time in, I dunno, a decade. Discovering all the dialogue is tattooed on my soul.
― Magic Miike (R Baez), Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:38 (twelve years ago)
I'm not a huge fan of Chuck Jones (heresy, I know), but both of those are classics, and I'm kind of pleased that old-school comic animation has placed so high. I am disappointed that not much of the early/experimental/arty stuff has placed throughout the poll, though.
― emil.y, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:39 (twelve years ago)
I think Totoro's unconventional pacing (and the effect this has on the story) is one of the things that its fans really love about it!
I would like to have a view on Howl more nuanced than "Go cry, emo kid", but to be honest that pretty much covers it.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:41 (twelve years ago)
so Wall-E is going to be No. 1 then. Hmmmm
― Number None, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:45 (twelve years ago)
Haha, really? I guess I'm not that steeped in the critical discourse around this stuff. It is probably because I am horrendously mean and evil, but I find "kids with ailing parent find refuge in a magical world" to be a terribly clichéd and trite storyline, so the pacing of Totoro doesn't really do it any favours for me. Still... CATBUS.

Kiki is a million times better than Howl!
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:54 (twelve years ago)
cool, so mind game in the top 2, psyched!
― 乒乓, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:55 (twelve years ago)
I mean I get that Howl has its fans, but I really remember the latter as being kind of a mess, with inscrutable characterization, an incoherent conclusion, and too much striving for the "overflowing of magical wonders" that Spirited Away made look easy. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it okay while I was watching it but I immediately had no desire to see it again. Whereas Kiki's just grows deeper with each viewing; it's a story comfortable in its smallness and unapologetic about how much the small things can matter to children (or to people generally). Yeah, it finally swings for a big action climax that comes out of nowhere, but the outcome of that sequence depends on stuff that's actually central to the movie and the main character's arc. I can think of very few kids' movies which are as finely executed.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 January 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)
I'm not sure about critical discourse, it's just a slow gentle film where nothing happens and (spoilers) it turns out that even less is happening that it appeared. Some people put up with that for the characters, some people luxuriate in it.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:10 (twelve years ago)
Basically, I liked Howl a lot and thought it worthy of a place. I don't really want to sound like I dislike the others, because I do like them. Even Kiki is a nice little piece, though it's not close to being one of my favourites.
― emil.y, Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:21 (twelve years ago)
(And on checking, Totoro made my ballot where Howl did not, so, hey, whatever.)
― emil.y, Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)
'howl' is the only miyazaki that hasn't done anything for me. there are non-miyazaki ghiblis -- like 'arrietty' -- that i like more.
'totoro' is definitely the best IMO -- there's probably never been a better portrayal of children in any movie, animated or otherwise.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)

Up has strong characterisation, powerful themes, amazing visuals, a decent twist, and talking dogs / dogs in fighter planes - let alone the merciless first five minutes. Up is the Pixar film that doesn't have to explain its place in the top ten.

ten will do. really though, do as strongo says and watch Mind Game, it's the greatest, and also watch 5cm/second coz it's only an hour long but DAMN will it move you with its understated storyline of temps perdu and *astounding* visual aesthetic

Just watched Coraline, pretty disappointed. It seemed so sparse, full of dead air or cursorily written lines like it was just a draft script. The music was similarly thin and the set pieces were just odd - the mouse circus was boring, the old actresses' mermaid & venus double act frankly bizarre. And the story was cut and pasted from a bunch of traditional fairy tales with no spark of its own.

On further reflection I think it just wasn't creepy or weird enough. Don't really know the age range of the book but this was firmly in young kids territory where it could have been closer to young adults; and having the entire film animated meant the other world never seemed other worldly; if the real world had been live action or even just done in a different style... would like an idea of what the book was like but bleugh.

the 3D handled this beautifully though - when she first looks out into the "other" backyard and the rear of the image just plummets away from you, and then the whole world stays so depth-enhanced for her whole adventure there

Okay, so I'm in a fairly bad place at the moment anyway, but Film4 just showed Grave of the Fireflies and I basically just wept continuously for half an hour at the end. Really good film.
