Mack Horton, the Australian who kicked off a promising meet for his country by winning the 400-meter freestyle, was addressing the topic of Sun Yang, the Chinese swimmer whom he beat for the gold — and who has generally perturbed him, first for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2014, then by splashing water in his lane during a training session before the Olympics began.
“I just have a problem with athletes who have tested positive and are still competing,” Horton told the assembled press.

The thing with Yulia Efimova is a complete farce. Implicated in the WADA-report, busted for using Meldonium (her second offence) and still allowed in at last notice. Nobody can possibly believe that she's clean.
― Frederik B, Monday, 8 August 2016 16:15 (nine years ago)
Idk why they let Russian althetes with prior bans compete in swimming but banning people for using meldonium when you have little to no idea how long it stays in the body doesn't seem particularly fair.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Monday, 8 August 2016 16:29 (nine years ago)
What's not particularly fair is Russia having a state organized doping scheme which apparently even included using the FSB to keep doping agencies away from athletes.
― Frederik B, Monday, 8 August 2016 16:39 (nine years ago)
The Russian athletes trying - and freaking succeeding - to use loopholes to stay in competition, when next to nobody collaborated with the investigation is shameful.
― Frederik B, Monday, 8 August 2016 16:40 (nine years ago)
That has nothing to do with meldonium. I agree the double standard where some athletes with prior bans can compete but others can't doesn't make sense.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Monday, 8 August 2016 16:47 (nine years ago)
The meldonium question is completely pointless, is what I'm saying.
― Frederik B, Monday, 8 August 2016 16:56 (nine years ago)
The point is that everybody knows Efimova is a cheat. She cheated before, and her country conspired to protect cheaters. And yet there she is.

just started watching the olympics this weekend
i'm stateside right now so i had the displeasure of watching nbc -- good lord they're atrocious (as is their coverage as has already been stated)
anyway can i just say CBC, hats off
the best coverage i've ever seen basically
1 sign up for https://unlocator.com2 setup dns stuff and change region to canada3 go to http://olympics.cbc.ca/online-listing
so organized, simple to understand, easy to watch, etc
sometimes the live stream causes slight issues when rewinding because it switches to prerecorded video
but other than that it's a breeze
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Monday, 8 August 2016 21:47 (nine years ago)
yeah 100% happy with CBC's coverage

Efimova won silver. Was booed on entering the area, sporadic booing as she received her medal. Danish news says she broke down crying at one point, which sounds good.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 08:48 (nine years ago)
not sure of all the ins and outs but the IOC's handling of the RUS team seems to have been a total mess. I don't support the entire RUS Olympic squad being banned (because there are several sports, like tennis, where the athletes are much less connected to domestic programs and where the sport already has its own drug-testing procedures) but the loopholes Efimova found were ridiculous.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 09:33 (nine years ago)
Ah Frederik what a shithead you are.
― pandemic, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:03 (nine years ago)
x-post: I don't know, afaict the problem was that the russian state put barriers in place to make the sports anti-doping procedures not work. I was thinking more that some sports, such as synchronized diving for instance, probably doesn't benefit from doping as much, and it might be unfair to ban them.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:04 (nine years ago)
afaict, athletes who could show a clean doping record in international competition independent of Russian domestic testing were mostly cleared to compete by the individual federations. The main national punishment for state involvement is that Russian athletes with prior bans were mostly not allowed to participate, unlike athletes with prior bans from other countries.
The swimming case is mysterious, though, as they banned several athletes with prior convictions and then reversed that ban without any clear public explanation.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:24 (nine years ago)
Unfortunately it doesn't really prove anything to not have been caught at international competitions, since doping is used mainly during training, and with the goal of the drugs being undetectable at the events. The only reliable method is to have unannounced doping controls during the training period, and those were also obstructed by the Russians, involving help from the FSB.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:44 (nine years ago)
yes - some sports (like tennis) have independent out-of-competition testing as well. So I don't get why it ever made sense to suspend the entire RUS squad as opposed to on a sport-by-sport basis. (The RUS tennis player who has been caught taking meldonium, Sharapova, has already been suspended by the ITF.)
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:49 (nine years ago)
Yes, it varies sport by sport so some of the ones with long training periods and limited international competition have had blanket bans applied - the entire track and field team is out.
I would guess that swimming has a more rigorous international competition schedule but idk.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:56 (nine years ago)
Well, problem is that testing really wasn't that independent. The samples were taken to the WADA lab in Moscow, where they were tampered with. FSB would distract WADA testers so they couldn't supervise the testing properly. And some athletes trained in military cities, where civilian testers would have no oversight, iirc. When British testers were put in charge of testing this spring, they reported massive obstruction. When WADA decided to retest B-samples from the Moscow lab, the samples were destroyed or tampered with. So unless the tennis athletes trained abroad - which is definitely possible - the out-of-competition testing proves nothing.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 10:59 (nine years ago)
Track-and-field were banned because the original WADA reports from November and January went into details on the organized doping in exactly that sport, not because of anything with training periods and limited competition.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:01 (nine years ago)
Most of the tennis players do train abroad, as does Efimova - she's based in the US and has an American coach iirc.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:02 (nine years ago)
In a way, that ban is even more unfair, as the report said that athletic athletes had no choice over whether to dope or not, but were forced to do it if they wanted to be part of the national team.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:03 (nine years ago)
Efimova has an American coach, yeah. She seems to have kept Russian doctors, though, as meldonium is not approved by the FDA...
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:23 (nine years ago)
Some swimming nerd background info: Morozov and Lobintsev (both sprinters, both on the 4x100 free team that got 4th after loud booing) were named in the McLaren report, but there was no transparency on what they were named *for*. Both train at Trojan/USC and are regularly tested by USADA, so if they had test results 'hidden' by the Moscow lab it's not exactly clear how or when. All the Kazan 2015 Worlds samples have been retested in Barcelona, all clean (or at least that's what we've been told). So that leaves the 2013 Universiade, also in Kazan (Russia dominated - Morozov 2G 1S 1B, Lobintsev 2S, Russia won all 3 men's relays). But we still have no idea what's in the report. Complete mess. Meanwhile Efimova's meldonium use is no worse than any other Russian's (though how did she get it in the US where it's not FDA approved? She's also at USC), but even if she stopped taking it on Dec 31st, she still has the 'advantage' of it in her system, training on a fitness base built on its benefits. What really riled up the swimming community though was her pitifully short ban from 2013 (for a supplement containing DHEA) that was reduced by FINA for literally no reason other than to allow her to compete in a home World Champs, and her utter lack of remorse at the time ("it's just like I've got my driving license back after speeding"). FINA will do nothing about it - they are totally in hock to the Russians (and NBC, for that matter, hence finals finishing at 1am Rio time) and will do anything for their cash. Efimova was Miss July on FINA's 2014 sodding promotional calendar during her ban, ffs! Such a shame, her technique is beautiful to watch.
― katstevens, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:40 (nine years ago)
With the track-and-field band there was an exception made for athletes who could prove they trained outside Russia and submitted to doping agencies in other countries, btw. Darya Klishina was allowed to compete under neutral flag for this reason. Presumably the same exemption should have been made with every other organization.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:42 (nine years ago)
I think Klishina was exempt because she'd only ever been tested in the US?
― katstevens, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 11:49 (nine years ago)

Was trying to think of anything else in the summer olympics (sorry don't care about the road race) and maaaaybe the pummel horse? Mens gymnastics in general tho not as interesting to me (outside of the high bar) so my emotional investment isnt as deep. Beam is crazy though it claims victims on the simplest of moves.

Tonight it's Denmark-Brazil in football. Denmark leads the group with 4 points, Brazil has only 2. Loser will probably be out of the tournament, depending on the result in Iraq-South Africa.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 11:29 (nine years ago)
I didn't see the South Africa game but Denmark were terrible against Iraq. I can't see Brazil failing to score for the third consecutive game when the pressure is on.

Go Lasse Norman Hansen!!
Denmark lost 4-0 to Brazil, but still made it through to the quarter finals, as Iraq and South Africa played yet another draw. I don't know, I don't really see the point of football as an olympic discipline if it's always like this.
One of the things I like about following the olympics from Denmark is that we're pretty good at sailing, and for some reason that sport is always extremely dramatic. One of the Danish sailors were disqualified in one of the races, after a complaint for something minor but true. She got really pissed off and sailed extremely well, and is now number two. It's like, every year it always goes like this, disqualifications, boats keeling over, etc. One year the Danish boat was at number 1 before the final race, but then the boat sank. So they borrowed the Croatians boat, and managed to end at exactly the point where they'd still win gold. It was insane, and kinda stupid.

Was talking to a gymnastics fan about how Biles is so amazing and comparing her to Douglas - he said Biles is way better, she's not just doing more difficult moves but operating at a level of consistency that shouldn't even be possible in gymnastics - but he prefers Douglas because she's more aesthetically elegant (Raisman is apparently the opposite of this). Which is about how I (knowing nothing about it) instinctively feel too. I really, really loved Rebeca Andrade's style! Apparently she tore her ACL last year which meant that she's confined to routines here that don't allow for huge points scoring, which is sad in front of her home crowd.
What I find amazing about Biles is that basically all of the lead-up press said, this is the greatest female athlete in the world and she will demonstrate it - unbelievable pressure on any athlete in any context let alone in your first Olympics. And then she lived up to every expectation like it was nothing.

Of course. That's the way swimming (and to an extent sprinting, gymnastics) work. Anyway most garlanded or not there are very few athletes in their respective milieus who have been as good for as long as Phelps. Begrudging him success just seems weird to me.

Women's 100 was so good. Really liked that simple little feature nbc did on Tori Bowie yesterday. Grats to her on the silver. English Gardner looked way intense.
Phelps will be back for Tokyo no doubt. Take a couple/few years off then itch for it again then start getting all the sponsorship offers and he won't be able to deny it. Pick a few events get two more golds for a cool 25

the big event*
I think pre-Bolt, post-Lewis it was a little more even between 100 and 400 drama (partly cuz of Johnson) but it true that 100 winner is "worlds fastest person" whereas 400 is more like just another race.

Is today the last day of gymnastics for the whole competition?Glad i got to see the womens stuff a few days ago, the floor stuff was very impressive. How much spring is there in the floor mat. is taht all leg power or is it helped by bounce in that?
How long is a gymnast's career likely to be? Do they find themselves able to sustain doing things like that for decades or does the body have a finite stretch during which it can do things like double somersaults from momentum built up during the routine?Just left going wow.& thinking about Marvel films but obviously what I was seeing was being done live without harnesses.
― Stevolende, Monday, 15 August 2016 11:22 (nine years ago)
Very short - Nastia Liukin, one of the greatest American gymnasts of the modern era, was put out to pasture at 22, i think.

How much spring is there in the floor mat. is taht all leg power or is it helped by bounce in that?
It's pretty bouncy and that definitely helps a lot (Biles can clear a Biles standing on top of a Biles for example).
How long is a gymnast's career likely to be?
At the highest level very short (injury is big issue) and esp. in countries with super strong programs older gymnasts tend to get pushed out very quickly. Biles OTOH is obv pretty unique. Barring injury I think she'll be back in 2020....
― One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 August 2016 12:14 (nine years ago)
but we've still got Oksana Chusovitina tackling the vault of death and in the Olympic final at 41!

felt really sorry for Gabby Douglas - she was the star of the show in London, in the same position Biles is now in, and this time round she's still here but no one's talking about her except to bully her on Twitter.
― lex pretend, Monday, 15 August 2016 12:16 (nine years ago)
(super-pleased Aliya Mustafina got her gold tho!)
I don't really watch much gymnastics. I was noticing that most of the gymnasts this year seemed to be pretty small. With Biles even being 4' 8.Is the small size standard?
Just watching the 2012 because i couldn't find a torrent for this year's. & was thinking that catalina Ponor looked to be taller, just looked her up and found out she's only 5' 2.
So wondering if I'm making an observation based on a too small sample.
Might get into watching a bit more now that I chanced on the Women's this year. Would like to see how the men's compares though.
― Stevolende, Monday, 15 August 2016 13:35 (nine years ago)

― Number None, Monday, 15 August 2016 14:31 (nine years ago)
Gymnasts are generally pretty short. 4'8" might be a little shorter than most (not by much though as Chinese esp. historically teeny). Biles looks to my eyes to have basically the perfect body for 3 of the 4 events (probably better to be either longer or lighter for uneven).

Dressage, Pentathlon, Sailing, so many of the olympic sports were what rich people did. Since to begin with you had to be an amateur to participate, a lot was easier for rich people. I rewatched Olympia the other day, and the Modern Pentathlon segment is incredible. It's totally military officer training, everyone's rank is mentioned every time. It was really meant to be a display of military ability. The winner in 36 was a German pilot, though, don't know why he thought he needed to learn horseback riding and fencing. The Italian bronze winner later fought on the Eastern Front, and died close to Stalingrad, in one of the last cavalry charges in history.

The winner in 36 was a German pilot, though, don't know why he thought he needed to learn horseback riding and fencing.
i'm imagining some new/old event where the winner has to pilot a small plane onto a field, jump out of the plane, run a fast 400m, then jump upon a horse and do a dressage routine for 10 minutes. then they get out their rifle and shoot another man off of his horse at a distance of 200m.

I haven't paid much attention to the Olympics before. I'm subsequently wondering if it is inevitable that with several events happening at roughly the same time TV coverage is going to be grab bag/omnibus sets of several events being presented together in a TV timeslot. & therefore getting coverage of a specific sport takes later editing. Which would be why the gymnastics or whatever haven't appeared as torrents yet whereas the ones for previous Olympics have.Or if it's just a BBC thing that also seems to be done similarly by RTE. Makes it harder to catch up with things I missed though.Plus not seeing block shows being upped either.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 07:28 (nine years ago)
the omnium is probably the most impenetrable sport to understand and I include fencing in that (or perhaps just the commentators failing to explain any of it? I don't know much about gymnastics but the commentators are on point every Olympics). Didn't seem right that Cavendish could just take out a bunch of riders like that (especially one who couldn't continue) without penalty. Seems like a dick move. I had no idea at any point what any of the strategies were, why some riders went further up the track and some stayed inside or what the random sprints were about.
Didn't know diving was allowed in the sprints, surprised I haven't seen it before in that case! Was happy for Miller on the basis of always cheering for the smaller countries. In general sad I haven't seen much track & field or swimming, entirely the wrong time for UK audiences.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 08:01 (nine years ago)
A US runner dived across the line for bronze in the men's 400m in Beijing, iirc. I think Miller was falling and turned it into a lunge rather than it being particularly calculated.
Talking of small Caribbean nations and diving, it was good to see Yona Knight-Wisdom of Jamaica, the first West Indian to compete in the men's springboard competition, sail through the preliminary round yesterday.

JUst saw the clip of this on the news channel and it does look like she stumbled and turned the fall into something else.
Guess she's lucky that the rules aren't feet across finish line cos hers are a couple of feet away from it for a while. Have to rewatch to see how many other people beat her feet across the line.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 09:44 (nine years ago)
It's your torso that needs to reach the line. If it was feet, we might be seeing some amazing drop kicks going on
― Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 09:50 (nine years ago)

Cav is def a go-hard, win-at-any-cost rider. He tried to pass on the inside during the elimination event of the omnium the other day, I def think there's nothing he wouldnt do. I still kinda like him? Sucks tho.
Nbc commentators said Miller def looked like she was tightening up at the very end, her arms were flailing, so she was kinda on the edge of desperation. After rewatching I kinda think it was more of a "desperate lunge that collapsed"

One of many reasons why BBC or CBC coverage is useful to watch. When this all happened last night there was a bit of discussion about it but both commentator teams were all "Hey, it happens," said why and then moved on to the pole vault as per usual.

Danish Badminton Womens Double in the final! With that medal, be it gold or silver, Denmark will get at least 10, the highest count since London 48 (and that was a bit cheating, as Denmark was one of the countries where the least percentage of young men had been killed). Sweden continues to be ahead in the official count, though, as they've won more silver medals, which at this point is kinda annoying.

Zonderfeld was quite amazing getting back up on the bar and completing the routine after that fall.
Men's bar was quite great, not seen any of the other men's gymnastics this year. Need to see if I can remedy that.
Are the men also really small?
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 19:26 (nine years ago)
Zonderland even.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 19:28 (nine years ago)
how do you mean? asian men are generally shorter, but have stronger/bigger legs than westerners; while westerners tend to have bigger torsos, chests and arms but thin legs -- there are advantages and disadvantages to all body types depending on what routine you're talking about
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 19:35 (nine years ago)
It turned out that the women involved in gymnastics have a tendency to be really small. I was wondering if the same was true of the men.
Oddly it sounded from what i was reading that once women gymnasts who have been training intensely all their lives stop training they can get a growth spurt. Not sure how true that is. But seems like they tend to quite small 5ft 4 is on the large side. Biles is 4'8.
Now not sure if men involved in the sport are similar. I would assume they must start training at around the same young age to actually be really successful. But not sure if other factors involved in training would have the same result on the male body.
Was also reading that being small was in itself an advantage in terms of physical forces at play in tumbling etc and spin. Also I think in spacial awareness.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 19:50 (nine years ago)
ya i think being shorter definitely helps with spins and tumbling
i'm not sure if training intensely would stunt growth though -- for men, it would seem that it actually aides it as testosterone levels would be pretty high
it also depends on if your body lends itself to perform well for that sport, right? the chinese are known for being more methodical when choosing what sport or creative path a child takes, so the athletes we see are already filtered based on an ideal
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 16 August 2016 19:58 (nine years ago)
Wonder if the sample of who is likely to be ultra successful in the sport is not that representative of everybody taking part in the sport. So the really successful female gymnasts tend to be the smaller ones whereas you'd be pretty decent if you were larger just not up to the competition for a level this high.
I think the intensive training was effecting hormone release to some extent which was one reason there was some growth spurt among ex-gymnasts.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 20:16 (nine years ago)

would have to say that this is true of virtually every sport imaginable. you can be a very good/strong cyclist and not be shaped like a mantis, you can play basketball very well and not be 6'7", etc
it's only at the highest levels of competition where someone's genetically bounded dimensions are going to impair them in a way that can't be made up for with skill/training (and in the US i would say "college-level" can be included in "highest levels")

> i'm not sure if training intensely would stunt growth though
It does in some cases, generally if you do weight training before you've finished growing (my old swim coach often fed us a story about how Sly Stallone would have been 6ft tall if he hadn't done weights aged 14). Thing is with gymnasts though, power-to-weight ratio is so key that most of them are on calorie-control diets, which combined with constant stress on the body will likely delay the onset of puberty. I remember an article in Just Seventeen or somewhere that interviewed (British) identical teenage gymnast twins, and the one that had quit a year earlier was 4" taller than the one that was still going.

Also, GB were actually top of the medals table at the World Champs in March - not dominant to this extent, mind. I think they certainly underperformed in 2014-15 - I don't follow it that closely but I assume some of the debut medallists at this Games were still coming through at that point and the likes of Hoy and Pendleton had retired, while others were focused on road racing. Certainly, there have been massive leaps in performance (men's team sprint improved on March by over 1sec) but elsewhere NZ/Aus/US/Ger have plateaued a bit.

Do any of the ex-Olympic stadiums get taken on as functioning sports centres or is this the fate of everything. I saw that some photos of other overgrown ex-Olympic places were circulating a couple of weeks back. At least i assume they were other, seemed to be more taken over by wilderness/nature than those Greek ones. But I didn't really look at them.
Is a problem that places tend to be built away from main cities/places of population in order to house the athletes closer to them.Just assuming that athletes are housed in specialist villages for the event rather than being put up in whatever cities.& that distance from population centres means that they don't get used much.
Would be ideal if they were ideally placed to be of great use to urban populations but might also lead to accusations of favouritism? When the Olympic ideal seems to be trying to be neutral, Not sure hwo well taht's lived up to
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 17 August 2016 12:13 (nine years ago)
The main stadia are usually well-used, the ones in London, Athens, Moscow, etc, are used for football, etc. It's the peripheral ones that tend to fall into a state of disrepair - though not in London.

I'd be all for moving the Olympic games to a permanent venue. They are too damned expensive to host at a new site every time and no host country can make use of all the facilities they need to build just so they can be occupied during a two week extravaganza, then abandoned. But the current system makes too much money for the IOC for them to change it.

XpWouldn't you have to try to find a neutral place to host them. Not sure where you'd put a permanent site. But otherwise that makes sense.
& that neutrality has been dealt with by changing the site every time. But I was aware taht there was disruption caused among some in London at the time of the Games there.
For example they wanted to block the people who were living in barges around Hackney Marshes etc from using the sites they had up until then at least during the duration of the games. Probably other similar things occuring that I didn't meet people directly affected by.

Greece did almost get a permanent Games - they hosted the Intercalcated Games in 1906, with the idea that they'd host a somewhat more classically inspired variant of the Games every four years thereafter. 1906 was when the idea of an opening/closing ceremony, parade of nations, etc was introduced. They never did host another interim event but 1906 is credited with reviving the Olympic movement somewhat (1900 and 1904 were not considered successful).

― wizzz! (amateurist), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)
you could probably continue to rotate the winter games -- the kind of infrastructure it demands is more likely to be a) already in place or b) likely to be used on an ongoing basis (with the exception of things like speed-skating maybe)
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)
Xp I don't think it'd spawn any spin offs. Every sport already has their own WC's and plenty of tournaments to fill a years calendar to the brim. The 4 years interval is just there to make it more special than yr run of the mill yearly sports tournament iirc. Which would not be an argument against having the olympics in Athens for eternity from now on. But every city in the world wants a piece of the $ pie and attention.
Plus, where could all corrupt politicians around the globe squander public money if not on the Olympics? Think abt the poor politicians.

Well what I was thinking of as spin offs would be events held in the permanent Olympic stadium during the 4 year intervals> & since they were held in the Olympic stadium they'd probably be marketed as being some form of Olympic related product.JUst was thinking that if you had a permanent stadium/venue set up you would want to be utilising it in non Olympic time.
But other points you make there are ones I would think are recognisably currently in play.

Usain Bolt and the Andre de Grasse being so far on top of their game that they can have a non verbal conversation as they approach the finish line. Would think most people would only be able to concentrate on the finish line while running at a fraction of the speed.

I was thinking, wow that's a an impressive tally for two countries with 6-10m population, considering how crazy people are going here for Team GB's 51. Then I realised you meant 34th and 35th.
Aw, bless.
― Michael Jones, Thursday, 18 August 2016 14:34 (nine years ago)
Haha. No, Denmark will get at least 11 medals, which is the most we've won since 1948!! We're 7th in medals per capita at the moment, though, with GB at 17, Sweden at 19 and US at 42.

Ryan Lochte is like if you had a robot in a factory that was optimized to do one specific thing really amazingly well but then you put clothes on it and rolled it out into the world and it just rolled directly into a wall and repeatedly flailed its limb against the brickwork in a futile attempt to do the only thing it's good at.

Lochte would be the "foreign speaking" person in this instance, for starters. and being that no guns were actually drawn per the latest reports, and assuming Lochte doesn't understand Portuguese as you imply, and no gun was pointed at him, how exactly would he deduce he was being robbed? Charades?
security footage shows a fairly innocuous interaction (with some annoyed security guards appearing aggravated but displaying professional behavior), but yeah, if it's more entertaining for you to think things "don't add up" and that there's a Zapruder pissgate film that has yet to surface, have at it

Attributable to USOC CEO Scott BlackmunTwo U.S. Olympic swimmers (Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger) have given statements to local authorities today regarding the incident first reported on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Their passports have been released and they recently departed Rio. After providing a statement earlier in the week, a third (James Feigen) provided a revised statement this evening with the hope of securing the release of his passport as soon as possible. Working in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate in Rio, we have coordinated the athletes’ cooperation with local authorities and ensured their safety throughout the process, but we have not seen the full statements provided by Bentz and Conger. However, we understand that they describe the events that many have seen on surveillance video made publicly available today. As we understand it, the four athletes (Bentz, Conger, Feigen and Ryan Lochte) left France House early in the morning of August 14 in a taxi headed to the Olympic Village. They stopped at a gas station to use the restroom, where one of the athletes committed an act of vandalism. An argument ensued between the athletes and two armed gas station security staff, who displayed their weapons, ordered the athletes from their vehicle and demanded the athletes provide a monetary payment. Once the security officials received money from the athletes, the athletes were allowed to leave. The behavior of these athletes is not acceptable, nor does it represent the values of Team USA or the conduct of the vast majority of its members. We will further review the matter, and any potential consequences for the athletes, when we return to the United States. On behalf of the United States Olympic Committee, we apologize to our hosts in Rio and the people of Brazil for this distracting ordeal in the midst of what should rightly be a celebration of excellence. With three days remaining in the Olympic Games, our primary focus will remain on supporting the athletes who are still competing and celebrating the achievements of those who have finished.

I caught part of a piece on payments to Olympic athletes and subsequent taxation on the BBC News channel earlier this week. Wish I'd caught all of it now but needed the toilet. It was saying that the US has nasty amount of taxation on a special rate for Olympic athletes. Something like $10,000 of the $25,000 they'd be payed.I had thought nobody participating got payed and it was all supposedly amateur participation. But seems that a lot of govts give a hefty bonus to those taking part. I think the UK is a rare exception and even only pays for one person to accompany the athlete. So families are largely paying their own way to see their close relative participate.
I was just thinking of this payment thing as I wondered what the US were going to do with the swimmers. Also I can see how enforced taking payment for vandalism morphs into reports of robbery. But the question of motivation seems overly subjective in that version. Are the swimmers narcissistic immature children or something? Lochte seems to be from those videos anyway.
― Stevolende, Friday, 19 August 2016 08:07 (nine years ago)

Also surprised taht there is any need for talk about whether or not there would be a parade for Team GB when they get home. Would have thought that was inevitable but BBC News channel seem to be trying to stake claim to the idea.
While I was typing that the News had a fuller swimmer story than I'd heard before. Hadn't heard that the vandalism was down to the toilet being locked, though it makes some sense of a kind. Also hadn't got the bit about Lochte claiming he'd been MUGGED by people DRESSED as or PRETENDING to be Police which does very much add in a layer of distortion. Not sure how Brazilian police tend to handle issues of vandalism, so on the spot fining isn't really something i've heard of.Think that over here and in the UK you would expect to need to go to a Police station or see a judge before a fine was levied. & that there would be a need for a neutral point like a police station involved to ensure fairness and objectivity. Possibly to ensure taht Police /Gard whatever wasn't carrying money around with them. Or possibly pocketing it.

assuming Lochte doesn't understand Portuguese as you imply, and no gun was pointed at him how exactly would he deduce he was being robbed? Charades? -Neanderthal
You answer yourself: "assuming".Do we know if the guards made them hand over their money to pay for damages? I guess no one will because the Americans paid to get out of Brasil and go on with their life without an annoying scandal hanging over them.
If anyone paid an exorbitant amount for damages it wouldn't be a longshot for someone to say they are "robbed" (particularly a drunk idiot). Which is my point; but it's not like I care about any of this. I care about how people treat each other on an internet forum and I notice that some people just want to attack others for having a hypothetical scenario. People need to leave their baggage at the door. Sour puss in not a good look.

Whiny hypersensitive internet poster is also a pretty lame look. I don't think there is a chance in hell that Lochte (not to mention the other three dudes) wasn't aware they were fabricating a total lie about the events of that morning. If you do and are willing to "forgive" the permutations of his tale because those funny third worlders speaking their crazy language could really have been doing anything then good on you how was poor ignorant Ryan to know well good for you.

Right, not been paying attention to the racing events. just saw that as a clip later on things that I wasn't paying the greatest amount of attention to. But that explains why he could keep up ok. I thought it odd since bolt has much longer legs as well as being more famous for speed.
Only been watching it intermittently anyway. have wanted to catch as much of the gymnastics as I could. Yesterday got into the women's diving for a while. Also watched a bit of the taekwondo trying to work out what it was initially and how it was as a spectator sport. Not seeing it as being as alluring as other martial arts I'm aware of. Seems more static, but may just be people standing on one leg trying to kick each other with already partially extended legs. Is there much punching in the sport? Also doesn't have the thing of people being physically thrown that some of the better known arts have.I thought taekwondo was the one that was initially devised to combat horse mounted invaders so had a lot of high kicks.
Wouldn't mind seeing capoeria as a sport, not sure how competitive it is though.
Also watched a bit of the bike thing where people on undersized bikes went over bumpy obstacle courses. Didn't get what it was called though but seemed quite fun.
― Stevolende, Friday, 19 August 2016 13:06 (nine years ago)
THAt's high kicks as in flying ones rather than torso height. But not sure to what extent making it into a competitive sport alters the basic art.
― Stevolende, Friday, 19 August 2016 13:08 (nine years ago)

I think the cycling thing I saw must have been BMX. I see the odd kid with taht type of bike around town doing jumps on stairs in the park etc. Hadn't really taken in what they were before.i think a BMX bike used to denote something a bit different when I was young but they've been further streaamlined.

Do we know if the guards made them hand over their money to pay for damages? I guess no one will because the Americans paid to get out of Brasil and go on with their life without an annoying scandal hanging over them.
if you bothered to read an article (or even read upthread), you'd know the answer to this. you'd even know the huge difference between what Lochte claimed happened and what video confirmed happened. One of them is out of a shitty action film, the other isn't - I'll let you guess which is which.

Gymnastics is famously known as a sport that is decided by tenths/thousandths of a point. Here are the results of this year's women's all-around:
Gold Simone Biles United States62.198
Silver Aly Raisman United States60.098
Bronze Aliya Mustafina Russia
58.665
4 Shang Chunsong China58.549
5
Ellie Black Canada
58.2986
Wang Yan China58.032
7 Jessica López Venezuela
57.966
8 Asuka Teramoto Japan57.965
Aly Raisman, who is an incredible gymnast in her own right, was 2 points ahead of the rest of the pack; Biles was 2 points ahead of her, making her 4 points ahead of everyone else.

wrt usain
seems like de grasse's strategy was to slow him down, and at best, usain ran the same time, meaning he did do some damage
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/olympics/de-grasses-plan-was-to-beat-bolt-by-making-him-run-faster-it-almost-worked-hereswhy/article31462936/
When the race was over, Bolt won gold in 19.78, while De Grasse settled for silver with a time of 20.02. Compared to the semi-final, Bolt's time stayed exactly the same. It was De Grasse who got slower.
pretty interesting stuff

it's the handball semi-final. jannick green admiration drive continues
― imago, Friday, 19 August 2016 23:23 (nine years ago)
I was stuck for things to do last night so I tuned into a men's handball quarter final, and discovered my favourite Olympian of 2016 this way (not a difficult position to attain given I've basically avoided the lot) - the Danish second-choice goalkeeper, Jannick Green, who wasn't any sort of flag-draped musclebound Perfect Athlete but a lanky long-haired guy with about as much sporting talent as me (decent amateur soccer goalie fyi), who did an extravagant celebration every time his prancing saved a shot, often directed at the benched first-choice goalkeeper but mostly at the viewing public. At one point he failed to save a shot and in a fit of angst flung himself feet-first at a pitchside hoarding, denting it. Throughout, he and his mane fully embodied the absurdity of Olympic sport. I envisaged a Games populated by none other than his kin. But then I probably wouldn't watch that either.
Handball is better than I thought it'd be, though

it's so fast -- and the tv shows such little depth -- that i can't really tell what's going on
― mookieproof, Friday, 19 August 2016 23:41 (nine years ago)
badminton as a TV sport is a bit difficult to adjust to, if you don't play, given the idiosyncratic trajectory compared to the balls in other sports -- often people will wonder why a player goes for a shot that appears to be sailing way out, though actually it's going to be in
doubles is probably the better TV sport but yeah it's very fast (what makes it fun imo). singles is actually slower-paced, since a good percentage of the game is controlling the court positioning rather than overpowering him.
― have you ever even read The Drudge Report? Have you gone on Stormfron (k3vin k.), Friday, 19 August 2016 23:49 (nine years ago)

I assume it's a pretty good thing that the US swimming team left it so late in the Games to start their shenanigans. Would there have been a lot of stigma if it had happened earlier, or is it just over the truth being revealed toward the end.Presumably they didn't relax until after their competitions, not sure of timing beyond it being last weekend.

There is still a chance more sports may be added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The latest information suggest that due to its huge popularity in Japan, men's baseball and women's softball are favorites to return to the program after being dropped following the Beijing 2008 Games. Karate, squash, skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing and roller sports are others with serious chances, while new disciplines in pre-existing sports, like 3x3 basketball, are also vying for inclusion. In June 2015, twenty-six International Olympic Committee (IOC)-recognized Federations proposed events to be considered for inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: 'baseball and softball', karate, squash, bowling, snooker, sport climbing, surfing, wushu, roller sports, air sports, American football, bowls, bridge, chess, dancesport, floorball, flying disc, korfball, netball, orienteering, polo, racquetball, sumo, tug of war, underwater sports and water skiing. Only seven IOC-recognized sports did not apply: climbing and mountaineering, motorcycling, motor racing, cricket, basque pelota, lifesaving and powerboating. On June 22, this list was reduced to a shortlist of eight sports: baseball and softball, bowling, karate, roller skating, sport climbing, squash, surfing and wushu. On September 28 2015, the shortlist was reduced to five sports - baseball and softball, karate, roller sports, sport climbing and surfing (leaving out bowling, squash and wushu). These sports have been recommended for inclusion on the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020. Final confirmation is expected to be made at the IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016, with no details on exactly how many sports will be added.

in re that deadspin piece, i share some of its outrage but it seemed to dodge the trickiness of the matter. i largely agree w/ this comment:
This is a complicated and fraught topic, one that deserves a more thoughtful take than the one offered by Ms. Moskovitz. This is not about some cruel effort by men to define and control women’s bodies, as she glibly asserts. It’s about trying to create an environment where women have a chance to compete and succeed, since the best women athletes cannot in general win against the best male athletes. The process Ms. Moskovitz describes in harsh and invasive (maybe needlessly so), and perhaps it is best to simply give up. But ascribing negative motives to the people striving to make women’s sports fair is simply a way for Moskovitz to make simple what is actually very difficult, so that she can feel self-righteous.
of course, you could argue that it's all just sports and doesn't really matter and nothing so unimportant should be the cause of anyone's misery. (that would be my flippant answer.) but that doesn't really provide an answer to the other women in elite competitions (for whom sports is their life and livelihood) who feel it unfair that semenya is competing against them.
― wizzz! (amateurist), Sunday, 21 August 2016 02:34 (nine years ago)
the whole point of the piece is the "trickiness of the matter" i thought?
honestly the whole thing underlines the ridiculousness of separating men & women's sport in this day & age tbh but that is a bigger issue
like if you physically cannot help the level of testosterone in yr body and you identify as a woman and yr under more scrutiny than a fuckin PED user then the system does not work imo

it's only "ridiculous" if you're willing to accept that women will no longer be able to compete in most elite sporting events, since that is what would happen if the gender categories were collapsed.
there's a feminist argument, i think, for both policing the gender boundary in this case and not policing it.
the problem is that for the purposes of "fair" athletic competition the categories of "men" and "women" are functionally proxies for a wide range of different physical attributes. that sits uneasily aside the social functions of gender in other contexts. so you can't simply import the way gender categories function in other realms into an elite athletic context without friction.
― wizzz! (amateurist), Sunday, 21 August 2016 05:10 (nine years ago)
(not to imply that intersex people don't present difficulties in other contexts in which binary gender categories reign. just that each context effectively wants to make different use of that binary.)

xpost after reading some more I can def appreciate that it is more complex than it seems. but on another level, it is just soul crushing to think of someone being told they can only compete in the sport if they have surgery etc. And even after today's win, the first thing Chenaya & Wambui are asked about is medications. It takes a toughness to compete at that level as it is, but to navigate that & hold your head up in spite of it is truly herculean imo
anyway

Imago that's pretty reductive. Just like any sport or game once you take the time to understand the nuance and skill involved you get a better appreciation. I do agree it's slow tho, wish the playing area was a little smaller. The shot clock really helps keep action going tho. The violence under the water is the best part of the sport.

Yes and no. Water Polo has a nasty streak but that's often the case with handball - but the stuff under the pool seems less controlled by refs. I'd need to watch more of it. Doubt I will watch any until 2020.

In 2013 it was revealed that four young female athletes from developing countries, all with atypically high but entirely natural levels of testosterone, were sent to a clinic in France where doctors proposed removing their gonads and partially removing their clitorises. All four agreed, and a year later they returned to competition.

Sharp, who wrote a paper on Semenya while she was studying at law school, has seemed to struggle to contain her emotions this week. On the BBC, Paula Radcliffe explained why she felt Sharp was so upset. “However hard she goes away and trains, however hard Jenny Meadows goes and trains, they are never going to be able to compete with that level of strength and recovery that those levels of elevated testosterone brings.”
Radcliffe said that Semenya and the other hyperandrogenic women should either “take the medication to suppress the levels, or they choose to have an operation or they choose not to compete”.

I don't understand why high testosterone is seen as being different to any other exceptional physical characteristic. If testosterone levels are what should define competition rather than gender then go ahead and do it that way, perhaps with different bands a la the paralympics, if it shouldn't then there's no issue. The majority of people have no hope of competing as elite track and field athletes regardless of how much they train, and the gulfs in standards of training are enormous, there's never been fairness. If you don't want to compete against the physically exceptional don't enter the olympics.

I don't think this Silver medalist will be returning home:
When he crossed the Olympics marathon finish line, Feyisa Lilesa put his hands above his head in an "X." Most of those who watched Lilesa's spectacular silver medal performance didn't know what that meant — or just how dangerous a protest they were watching.
Lilesa was protesting the Ethiopian government's killing of hundreds of the country's Oromo people, the country's largest ethnic group, which has long complained about being marginalized by the country's government. The group has held protests this year over plans to reallocate Oromo land. Many of those protests ended in bloodshed. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 400 people have been killed since November.
For months, Oromos have been using the same "X" gesture that Lilesa, 26, used at the finish line.
At a news conference following the race, he reiterated his defiant message.
"The Ethiopian government is killing my people, so I stand with all protests anywhere, as Oromo is my tribe," Lilesa said. "My relatives are in prison, and if they talk about democratic rights they are killed."
It was a remarkable turn of events — within seconds, Lilesa had gone from a national hero to a man who might not be able to return to his home country. In addition to those killed, many Oromo protesters are currently languishing in prison.

Polish 800m runner feels current controversy is insufficiently a shitstorm.
“It hurts a bit. I saw Melissa Bishop who was very disappointed, she improved her personal best and was 4th. It's sad, and I think she should be the gold medalist."
"I'm glad I'm the first European, the second white," she added.

I came a bit late to this Ryan Lochte thing and am confused by the controversy. So he said he was robbed at a gas station but then it seemed like his story didn't add up and then people thought he vandalized a bathroom and armed security guards confront him but now it sounds like armed security guards may actually have robbed or tried to rob him or that he maybe didn't actually vandalize the bathroom and they made that up but in any case something about privilege and we should all feel ashamed about it?
― socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 22 August 2016 16:08 (nine years ago)
I think in his original story there was no gas station - they just got pulled over and a gun was stuck in his face
― carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 22 August 2016 16:27 (nine years ago)
While bystander Deluz and the police said the amount paid was for property vandalized, it is unclear whether the swimmers understood the situation.
Lochte initially claimed that he was robbed of $400 and has yet to say if that was another embellishment.
Deluz thinks the men understood they were detained because of the damaged sign, as the broken advertisement was shown to them

This MP does realize that the sun has set on the British Empire, doesn't she?
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 22 August 2016 18:14 (nine years ago)
Could she include the US in the British empire count and thus subtly alter the balance. i mean 44 years or whatever is just as dead a connection to empire as 240. Or something?
Or is this just her subtle get back at the EU for trying to create statistics that weren't popular among some in a Brexit Britain

I, er, think you might want to look a bit closer there, Stevo.

― Frederik B, Monday, 22 August 2016 19:04 (nine years ago)
So did they break down the American (North and South) Olympians by place of birth and then assign them based on their colonizer? Feels like that would bump up a mess of the EU totals...

BBC News has just been talking about Lochte being dropped by most of his non Olympic sponsors. & also that that might well not be all that resulted from his drunk impatience. I'm kind of surprised he needed to break into a toilet if he was in that kind of state. Was he in a really built up area or something? Or even then surprised he wouldn't go in the street.
― Stevolende, Monday, 22 August 2016 20:17 (nine years ago)

― wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)
If you're pissed enough to vandalise a door like that you probably would. People do it all the time. Probably find something less conspicuous to p against. I've seen it reported that they did p against a wall or in a grassy area now.I think the hassle was over the vandalism though. Wonder if there would have been as much fuss if they'd just been seen p-ing in public place in the middle of the night. Sounds like it was the early hours of the morning after leaving a club, possibly en route to another.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 05:50 (nine years ago)
people piss on the street in "huge modern international cities" all the time in fairness
― Number None, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 06:54 (nine years ago)
I'm assuming that at 32 Lochte's Olympics career would be pretty close to over anyway. Seems like the average age of the rest of his team is about a decade younger. So expecting him to make the team for the next Games may have been questionable anyway. But now he seems to have screwed up his sponsorship outside of the Olympics.Wonder if at hios age he'd be likely to pick up any new sponsors or what is left open for him.
He hasa fashion line that has apparently mainly been talk since around the time of the last games. So is a rash decison while drunk going to be a major wake up call for him or is he just royally screwed by his won actions?

ryan lochte is clearly a scapegoat people are using to project their own guilt about the olympics, an event that sucked up resources that would have been better spent on infrastructure projects that actually benefited the people of rio
― Treeship, Friday, 26 August 2016 00:53 (nine years ago)
so the USA Today report that calls into question many of the details the Rio police supplied is just being retconned out of existence, eh? I mean, even if just to question their conclusions, I would have expected other outlets to comment on it (frivolous as this story is), but they're all pretty much ignoring the report that implied the bathroom door wasn't broken, and that other reports of damage were unverifiable, as well as witness testimony that suggested Lochte and company actually *didn't* know what was going on.
Far be it for me to defend a douche like Lochte, but just seems weird that that article hasn't been commented on much at all (regardless, Lochte heavily exaggerated the events in his original report).
I am sorry to the dude I was a dickhead to upthread - I mostly objected to using the phrase "foreign-speaking" to describe a security guard speaking his native language while in his own country.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:06 (nine years ago)
If anyone is being scapegoated it's clearly Hope Solo. I hate what she said, but six months?
― Frederik B, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:13 (nine years ago)
don't really feel too sorry for Hope, she has a history of being inflammatory, this is not her first offense and she got off a bit lightly for her domestic abuse incident a few years back.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:14 (nine years ago)
(I don't really feel *that* sorry for Ryan either, tbf)
i agree about hope solo too. she's a jerk, it would have been inauthentic for her to have behaved otherwise. i hate this idea that all athletes need to be exemplary/boring people
― Treeship, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:16 (nine years ago)
it's probably a 'make-up punishment' for those who thought the squad was too soft on her 2014 arrest
― Neanderthal, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:25 (nine years ago)
she also goes after her own teammates, so she's not exactly good for the locker room
― Neanderthal, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:26 (nine years ago)
that's who she is though, idk. she's a great goalie.
― Treeship, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:29 (nine years ago)
tho it's definitely double-standardy considering what Dempsey did in 2015 in that Gold Cup match (taking the notebook out of the refs pocket and ripping it up) was far worse and got a much lighter punishment
― Neanderthal, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:29 (nine years ago)
she's a great goalie, I prefer Ashlyn Harris tho
― Neanderthal, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:30 (nine years ago)
my problem isn't the fine or the suspension or (in lochte's case) the possible legal repercussions for lying. it's the whole scarlet letter bullshit that pops up around these controversies.
― Treeship, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:31 (nine years ago)
(xp neanderthal. yeah, I should of had the air quotes around "foreign speaking" but I think people understood what I meant)
― PastoralCollage, Friday, 26 August 2016 01:36 (nine years ago)
(But yeah, there probably would of been a lot less heated exchanges in some of the resulting Lochte discussions if I had used the air quotes to begin with. Thanks for the apology) :)
― PastoralCollage, Friday, 26 August 2016 02:02 (nine years ago)
It's not a scarlet letter. It's basically a timeout. Lochtes dumb ass will be back in another 4 years. It's not like getting dropped by sponsors is so bad literally the week after the olympics is over..
― carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 26 August 2016 03:10 (nine years ago)
Isn't he getting on a bit for an athlete already. From what I read he's already 10 years older than most of the rest of his team and will be 36 by the time of the next one.Is he going to pick up new sponsors so easily at his age and with stigma attached to him from this? I thought it was most of his non-Olympic sponsors that ad dropped him too.Would think to get into the olympic team he'd have to still be a lot better than people a lot younger than him in 4 years time and be on the right side of the Olympic management.
― Stevolende, Friday, 26 August 2016 06:54 (nine years ago)
yeah he's prob done. got smoked in his best individual event and other dudes will be able to beat his times for relays.
― Spottie, Friday, 26 August 2016 06:57 (nine years ago)
Also Lochte has historically been a 'big event' swimmer - he peaks at Olympics/Worlds and swims like a dead dog the rest of the season (this has generally got results, until this year). This means his non-sponsor earning potential at Pro Series/World Cup meets is way less than year-round pros like Chad Le Clos or Katinka Hosszu. For context, Hosszu is the only swimmer to ever top $1m in career prize money, and she is a massive outlier - unless you race every weekend like her, the prize money barely pays your airfare/accommodation - definitely not coaching/physio staff etc. I doubt Lochte's new cough sweet gig will make up for the loss of the Speedo contract so maybe he'll switch up his in-season game. He's going to have to do *something* different as his last few years of peripatetic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ training clearly didn't do the job: while he won the 200IM at Worlds last year, it was with a now-illegal underwater kick, clearly making up for lack of closing speed (last length was half a second down on his WR split; on the 200free he was 2nd for 150m then went backwards on the last 50, finishing 4th) which was fully exposed in Rio (last length 1.5sec down on his WR split!). It will be interesting ('interesting') to see if he does try a Hosszu and goes for prize money, or sacks off any sort of credibility and goes full-on Cher infomercial. I doubt he'll quit just yet but I can't see him making the 2020 team.
Right, I'm re-lurking now - unless a dedicated swimming thread starts up I'll see you all in 4 years :)
― katstevens, Friday, 26 August 2016 19:20 (nine years ago)
If you'd write more posts as interesting as that, I would definitely be pro a dedicated swimming thread :)

https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/fina-officially-makes-ryan-lochte-turn-illegal-in-im-races/
Backstroke kick is faster and less effort for Lochte, saving energy for his final free leg. So basically his 200IM finish has suffered a fair bit as a result of the rule change. Still world class obv, but no longer the gold-medal-cert-if-Phelps-isn't-around of the last 4 years. I guess his best shot now is the 4x200 relay, where he's always been consistently good (even this year). Can't let your teammates down! Apart from doing a runner & saddling them with a $10k fine!
― katstevens, Friday, 26 August 2016 21:26 (nine years ago)

Bill Sweeney, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, said: "The British public have a fantastic opportunity to meet their Rio heroes."
The velodrome training centre for Team GB's track cycling athletes, who have brought home 11 Olympic medals, is based in the city with many of the team living nearby - including Sir Bradley Wiggins who will be absent from both celebrations.
it is quite heartwarming to see someone who isn't really into all this vulgar showiness, such modesty and humility should be applauded.
