Morning. What's the point of showering before you go to sleep?

Matt DC, Monday, 13 August 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

evening. mornings are for sleeping as much as possible.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 August 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

evening, for two reasons. 1) i can't wake up on time, ever, and 2) my hair is super poofy for the 12-18 hours after i shower, so if i do it in the morning i look like donny osmond for the rest of the day.

evening logic: don't make your bed dirty, more sleeping time

I shower in the evening because I have to apply lotion afterwards due to my generally dry skin, and I need at least half an hour for the feeling of greasiness to dissipate so I can put on clothes

I understand not wanting to climb into bed after you got really dirty that day and that requires a shower, but mornings feel weird without showering for me.

Also, people who think their bed is some sort of pure clean place, do they never sweat in their sleep or have sex or anything?

your native bacon (mh), Monday, 13 August 2012 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

When I get home from work. So 10am ish. Technically morning but kinda evening. Never just before I go to work. Sleep is more important and I can make it from the time my alarm goes off, out of bed, brush teeth, dress, grab bottle of water, out front door in 7 mins, so minimum sleep time is lost.

pandemic, Monday, 13 August 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

I used to shower in the morning but I have gotten into the habit of swimming laps after work. So now I shower in the evening.
I am enjoying having the extra time in the morning, truthfully.

Trip Maker, Monday, 13 August 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

Location wildly varying these results, I suspect, along with access to public transport/bike vs car/walking

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 13 August 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

Showering as soon as I roll out of bed is a distinctly unpleasant experience for me and I avoid it unless I absolutely have to (mornings when I have to teach, basically). Otherwise, shower when I feel like it is more likely than morning or evening.

I guess that's "other."

showering is one of those morning routine things (also coffee) that i don't want to do because who wants to be awake in the morning. it is a good day if you get out of bed at eight but only notice at like eleven, by which point you have done two hours of work. i like showering late at night, then wearing a hat, then falling asleep, & having neatly packed & buoyant shower hair the next day.

do you think there's a correlation between 'prefer baths' & 'shower in the evening', this would make sense to me because they're about it feeling all relaxing rather than serving some direct function, ie waking up

, Blogger (schlump), Monday, 13 August 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't had a bath since i was 9 or 10 i don't think.

Luckily for anyone I'm around I have showered in the meantime

pandemic, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

Well, I'm unsure about whether I prefer showers in the morning or evening - I prefer 'washing' in general in the evening, but showers strike me as more functional than baths, so their utility is probably greater in the morning.

Also a point to note: I'm a student, so bathing first thing is not necessary, as I spend most of my day alone.

emil.y, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

Baths seem gross to me. Sitting in dirty/soapy water, eurgh. If I took a bath, I would want to take a shower to clean up from it afterward.

Death Grits (WmC), Monday, 13 August 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Monday, 13 August 2012 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

Then again, I don't think I'd take a bath to clean myself but rather to just relax and enjoy soaking in warm water.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Monday, 13 August 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

The last time I took a bath was in the 90s, at which point I realized just how impractical they are for the purpose intended. Dirt and dead skin all floating around in a swamp of my making.

Showers exclusively since that day (and mostly before that day).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

Also, I've kind of mastered the art of just washing my hair w/o taking a full shower thing by leaning in and using the movable shower head. Sometimes I'll wash my hair two or three times a day.

Showering early in the day is more essential for me when I'm alone than when I go out! It's the signal that my day has begun and that it's time to start doing things.

I bet this is part of it for me, too. I've been showering in the morning since junior high so I definitely equate showers with being ready to face the day. A former colleague of mine who worked from home said putting on a bra was the key factor for her, even if she put it on under her pajamas. Bras mean business. So I guess showers mean business for me, too.

half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Monday, 13 August 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

I was never much of a sleepwalker. I did it only a couple times, when I was around 10 years old. But when I was in my teens, I became a sleep-showerer. I'm not sure whether it was a dream or triggered by someone in the kitchen, since my mom would turn on the kitchen light upstairs and knock on my door telling me she was done showering, but I would sometimes think it was time to get up and only after getting partway through a shower realize that I was still tired and that it was pitch black outside.

So, other preferences aside, 3AM when on a normal high school kid schedule is not my preferred shower time.

your native bacon (mh), Monday, 13 August 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

That's what AC is for, and single-ness. And when you can't do your laundry closer than several blocks away, it is not immaterial how long your sheets are clean for.

But really I just like to degrease and desweat myself at night or else my skin feels like things are crawling on it and my sheets gradually turn grey where my body lies, and my skin breaks out.

evening. mornings are for sleeping as much as possible

OTM. Actually, if i'm not going out that night, I usually shower at late night, shortly before bedtime. I like to feel clean in bed, and since I keep the bedroom cool, i don't sweat much while asleep and still look and feel clean the next morning.

If I haven't showered recently, my skin gets oily and my hair looks scuzzy. I sometimes have to shower a second time early in the day for this reason. But even then it's usually noonish than early in the morning. Sleeping in takes precedence over everything else.

Lee626, Monday, 13 August 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

god bless owen, i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who makes every wash special. tho tbh i have been showering more or less daily lately, as i experience summer in a place that sometimes feels like summer, that is to say, not scotland. but normally i go about three days before there are any adverse effects whatsoever to feel, see, or smell. so thanks to a combination of the normal routine and mostly working from home, i have the luxury of showering whenever i want, which usually means at some point in the afternoon.

A tip I learned from a former gf, who in turn learned it from washing machines: At the end of a hot shower, turn the water temperature down 5, then 10 degrees for the last minute. She called it the "cool down cycle". Very refreshing, and reduces sweating and makes you want to dry off more quickly.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Monday, 13 August 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

i can't understand anyone having any tolerance for cold/colder water in any circumstance, i don't know if that is just me. like it is so hard to get out of the shower just into a world of not-being-constantly-cloaked-in-warm-water, let alone turn the temperature down. even on hot days it isn't refreshing the way i want; it's being too cold just after being way too hot.

, Blogger (schlump), Monday, 13 August 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

having to wait for your hair to dry

May I recommend - http://www.amazon.com/Aquis-Microfiber-Towel-Lisse-39-Inches/dp/B000AM82GM

It seems high maintenance to have a separate towel for your hair but I find it very useful because 1) it gets my hair out of my way while I'm getting ready; and 2) it dramatically shortens air drying time, which is great because I don't use a hair dryer.

I will take a very cold shower before bed when it's hotter than hell outside and I feel like I've spent the day wrapped in my own steaming hot sweaty wet clothes.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Monday, 13 August 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

To clarify, I dry my hair with a regular towel and then wrap it up in that microfiber towel which sucks most of the water out of it while I'm doing the rest of my morning thing.

kmfdotm (ledge), Monday, 13 August 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

Some machines, as they spin out the hot water used during washing, will spray the clothes with cooler water to prepare them for the cold rinse cycles (or something like that). Turns out showering in cooler water for the last minute has the same effect, easing the transition and making the air feel less chilly when you step out of the shower.

Optimum cool water temperature IME is as cool as you can make it and still feel comfortable, not icy cold. A slight cool-down at the end is very refreshing. Try it!

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

I love baths but they're not very efficient for the work week. When I lived in Milan a zillion years ago, I'd regularly shower in the morning and the evening; the air was so dirty that I needed a shower before bed. In SF where it's generally cool, I shower in the morning both to shave but also to wake myself up.

I would understand that if I had better lighting and a shaving mirror in the shower.

I really need to divorce my toothbrushing from my shower routine, though.

how long is your shower that you need to multitask it?

I mean, if you are in there for more than five minutes (8 tops if washing your hair), stop jacking it and wash something

Saves time and getting shaving soap all over the sink and your clothes, and you can rinse off easier and the warmth of the water helps too. I've never shaved in the mirror as I know the shape of my face fairly well.

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

wait who gets dressed before a wet shave

also it's a sink, I'm pretty sure it can handle a little shaving cream

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

I shower and shave in nine or ten minutes. The shower shave (with a cheap plastic razor) takes care of neck hair and the irritating ones above the beard line. When I'm done and dried off I trim the beard with an electric one.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

i never got the hang of shaving in the sink. how do you rinse off without making your hair and face and everything around you dripping wet? How doy ou avoid missing that tiny little bit of foam from the side of your jaw?

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

i think it just depends whether you have a mirror in the shower or not -- i don't, so i've never shaved in the shower, but if i did i probably would.

Pollopolicía (some dude), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

why do you need a mirror to shave? I mean, it's fairly simple, no?

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

I still need a mirror despite a pretty good instinct for knowing where to stop shaving but the one in my stall fogs up easily.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

I guess if I had a beard / other facial hair I might need some sort of mirror. Even though I have moles on my face that can catch, I've become pretty adept at shaving sans mirror. It's the same every day.

If you have a mirror, you can actually see where you have hair on your face and what you need to go back over. Plus, I'm trying not to chop into a goatee.

Basically, since I shave about once every 3-4 days (the optimal time period for me to guard against developing razor bumps from shaving too frequently, but not so infrequently that I look homeless), it usually takes two passes to get all the hair off of my face; using a mirror lets me do this quickly without guessing where hair might be left on my face.

Shaving in the shower rules

Ówen P., Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

I use a mirror in the shower that I hold up with one hand while I shave with the other. It only semi-unfogs. Should really get a new one.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

I tried shaving in the shower a few times, I can see why people do it, but I always miss bits if I do that and then end up having to shave again in front of the mirror anyway. And I'm pretty sure if I did it regularly I'd slice my lip open or something eventually.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

pro-tip: don't put your head under the faucet
I don't do this, but it just seems easier to use the shower to rinse off rather than having to do this whole separate complicated process that involves splashing water in your eyes and stuff.

If you have a mirror, you can actually see where you have hair on your face and what you need to go back over.

Can't see this with shaving foam anyway. I just feel my face and I can tell.

I shave in the shower and do not use a mirror. During my cycling months I'm showering at the local bike commuting facility, and the showers all have on-demand water heaters, so I don't feel too bad if I'm adding 3-4 minutes to my shower time.

Darren Robocopsky (Phil D.), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

I am super susceptible to razor bumps, which is just the worst

sometimes I have to grow a beard and endure the two weeks of itching just to get to a point where I can shave and not have it look like someone put tiny tapioca beads under my skin and then attacked my face with a cheese grater

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

I shave in a shower, don't use a mirror, and about 75% of the time I miss some huge or at least noticable patch of stubble, so I keep a razor at work and do touch-ups in the men's room before anyone else gets there.

I prefer the evening, because I'd rather feel clean at home and in bed, rather than outside and in public which is filthy anyway.
However I usually take a quick shower in the morning, a more thorough one in the evening, and wash my hair every two to three days.

I'm sure they are better now, but when I was much younger (say, in high school) and enduring a really horrible razor bump + stubble situation, I tried using my oldest brother's electric razor and it basically sliced little cuts into the skin on my face while leaving all of the stubble intact. I have not touched one since.

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

(conversely, whatever the new Gilette multiblade disposable head razor is called works perfectly; no nicks, close shave, no razor bumps unless I shave too many days in a row)

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

Sometimes I shave in the sink. It requires being able to get your foot into a sink at more or less waist height, but it's possible.

check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

I get really bad shaving rash too. I normally shave with an electric razor first then go over what's left with a Gillette. Then it's not so bad. But even then I can only really do it every 3 days. As it is I generally only shave once a week, at the weekend. Which I didn't do this weekend so I'm a right scruffy bastard today.

A shower in the evening makes perfect sense: you climb into bed clean. But also, your body kind of relaxes if you took a hot shower. That is why I give my kids a bath in the evening. In the summer they have a bath every evening. That way they kind of relax, wind down from a hectic day. Me, I tend to take morning showers, but sometimes also evening showers. Especially in the summer when you sweat a lot, an evening shower is lovely.
