I dunno if it's just me but I'm kind of tired of Tall Girl + Skinny Jeans brother-sister interplay
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:05 (thirteen years ago)
Just gonna port this whole thing ovah heah:
I have a few problems just with inconsistencies in character arcs, where they hint at developments and then seem to abandon them almost immediately
Boo + Surfer dude at the oyster bar - ? Rich fellow in early ep with the house and the driver - ?
And now where the heck did the play director go all of a sudden? AND: Truly goes out drinking with Other Lorelai & her bff and shows she's down and yet last night it was like their relationship had circled all the way back to ep 1
I enjoy it for the most part but plotwise it just feels like they don't quite have confidence in their characters yet? There's no big pushes in any direction which kinda makes me worried for a second season.

I might be giving the people in charge a bit too much credit, but I chose to interpret all of that as spinning a variety of threads they intended to pick up down the line. Y'know, like giving Michelle a number of potential suitors so as to complicate her love life by and by. Although, yeah, it may just be sloppy and poorly-planned. And it sort of is in the short term, given that this first season was so short.
Which isn't to say that there aren't structural/story problems. F'rinstance (unless the pick it back up next week), what's the deal with the friend she was playing phone tag with through the first half of the episode? He dissed her and she dropped it and...that's it?

Bunheads is my kinky breakfast, it seems
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)
that's kinda what I'm talking about in a nutshell. It's like they run with an idea and then, just kinda scribble it out mid episode or the next episode.
But I still loooooooove that Sherman-Palladino patter. That ratatat of the dialogue is always the thing that keeps me coming back.
And the dancing. Can I please have Not-Lorelai's yellow tap shoes? PLEASE.

I hope they don't give up on Carl and Boo
lil Carl's a cutie
(and not really that little imo)
phone tag with ex-roommate buddy was about providing a sort-of parallell with Sasha's cheerleading v ballet thing.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)
The dancing is great. I read that the istanbul was constantinople tmbg dance was added as filler because the episode ran short in editing.

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)
See, this is why we needed a dedicated thread, to get new people sucked in.
I'm really hoping Tall Girl and stop sniping at each other as well. Their shtick with him having to drive her around everywhere is not a patch on when Axel had to drive Sue around everywhere on The Middle, so they should just drop it. I'm also hoping that when they get picked up for a full season (please, please!) that the tantalising guest stars like Mark from Friends and Kirk and Mitchum Huntsberger are in it a bit more.
My husband is almost as in love with Sutton Foster as he used to be with Lauren Graham, so good work there, Bunheads team.
― trishyb, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)
Tall Girl and her brother*
― trishyb, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, Sutton Foster is really a revelation, as is most of the younger cast. Would not be surprised to see some of their careers really take off.
― Old Lunch, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

a few weeks ago sutton foster had this stupid dream sequence where she was like singing and dancing and shit. it was awful and i wanted it to stop. then at the end of the episode they did it again!

― check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)
it gets kinda better. it's not great, but it improves on a very shallow curve, lol

The kids were definitely hired primarily because they can dance. The acting is a work in progress but I think Boo and Sasha are pretty good.

Thank you for trying! I'm really stupid about this kind of thing because for so long I didn't have my own computer so I never even looked into streaming or anything. But when I click on the "Play" button, it still says I need to DL "media player lite" to view it.
― check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Thursday, 16 August 2012 03:15 (thirteen years ago)
And clicking on that link simultaneously opens a garbage/spam tab of advertising. Does it do that for you, too?
― check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Thursday, 16 August 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)
hmmm i have adblock - maybe install that if you don't have it already?
― just1n3, Thursday, 16 August 2012 04:57 (thirteen years ago)
1. just click the box that says "slow access" and the page will reload.
2. the media player that loads has a smallish play arrow dead center of screen (ignore the ones to left and right); you have to hit that twice to start streaming.
3. there will be pop-up screens but just close those.
4. possum.
i got firefox and that's what works, i dunno if yours looks or acts different. there's a bunch of fake "play now" and "start downloading" links that try to get you to install stuff on all these sites but usually only one series of clicks actually loads the show.

The dream Hubbell scene was slightly creepy, which I'm not sure fits this show.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)
The AV Club review of the episode makes a decent (if featherweight) argument for Bunheads as Twin Peaks-lite (dead character in the first episode driving subsequent actions, wacky townspeople, elliptical and premonitory dream sequences).

― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)
Rat Dance was awesome, and omg mace was hilarious!!
I didn't mind Hubbell dream sequence. It was kinda well done - slightly corny just for being a dream sequence, but I dunno. I thought it was nice. (hi I'm a cornball)
shirtless dude came back with a shirt and snogged not-Lorelai and then poof gone again *sigh*I don't even really know if he's cute enough to want around, I wish they'd leave him in one damn place long enough for me to decide
but this was maybe the best episode so far. all the threads! coming together! and Emily Gilmore went full Emily Gilmore at the end there when she yelled at whatsername. Awesome.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 05:51 (thirteen years ago)
Tell you what though, that was a kickass version of "Maybe This Time". I loved how Foster restrained herself from going full Minnelli till the very end.
― trishyb, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 07:17 (thirteen years ago)
I was really impressed with the musical sequences in general in this episode. Doing Boo and Shorty's Astaire thing in a one-er in that crowded restaurant must have been a nightmare.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 07:18 (thirteen years ago)

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 13:21 (thirteen years ago)
Shirtless dude reminds me of a mildly-roided Dean.
The dream sequence was good because it was more Buffy/Sopranos and less Dallas.
I like all the dancin', too. It makes me miss the Borders in downtown Chicago, where you could look across the street from the third floor window and watch the Joffrey dancers practice. Too bad there's no other way to watch the Joffrey people perform...

still haven't seen this. will hope that it comes on netflix i guess. me and the kids have been watching gilmores on dvd for months now. i have all 7 seasons on dvd. we just started season 7. cyrus - who is 7 - said that he wants to watch them all again when we're done. a chip off the old block! i honestly didn't know if they would make it through one episode. i don't know how many 10 and 7 year old boys would even want to. rufus: "i HATE when Logan calls her Ace!" me: "Oh god i know its like when dumb Tristan used to call her Mary. So condescending."
hey, what can i say, i'm not big on playing catch. i bond how i can.

JF-- There is SO MUCH Gilmore Girls DNA in Bunheads. The title of this thread is very apt.

There's a reason for that-- GG and Bunheads are both scored by the same guy, Sam Phillips.

I never didn't want to watch Gilmore Girls. I just didn't start when it began, and then it went on for so long that I (foolishly?) didn't want to pick it up somewhere in the middle. I plan to catch up on dvd at some point, but I say that for about 10 other shows too.

Just caught up with this week's episode.
Is it weird that Sasha's parents not only agreed to let her stay there (or, specifially, her mother I guess), but also to fund her designing a MEGA AWESOME apartment at the age of 16? Whatever the case, she's quite a hostess.
The Jenny/Melanie thing is starting to get on my nerves.
The whole Fanny/Michelle/Millie thing was pleasant, but Millie's personality may be a little overplayed.
The Michelle/brother/mother thing was UNpleasant entirely.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 9 February 2013 21:58 (twelve years ago)
Yeah the brother storyline and the Jenny Melanie thing - DONE with both
In other news did you know that Fanny / Emily Gilmore was Sylvia in the ORIGINAL broadway production of A Chorus Line?! How did I not know that? Fking awesome.

Sylvia? Ugh SHEILA. She was Sheila. wtf is wrong with me
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 February 2013 22:12 (twelve years ago)
After the NYD marathon of Bunheads was over and Dirty Dancing started (a movie I have never actually watched), the actress got out of the car and my friend and I both yelled "It's Fanny!"
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 9 February 2013 22:15 (twelve years ago)
Yeah! She's Baby's mom! She dances in that too :D
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 February 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)
It took me a bit to realize that Millie is Liza Weil. It's weird to see her playing a thirtysomething. To me she still looks like this:

Oh no, I just looked it up and apparently the back half of the season is on 8 eps? And we've already seen 5 of them? Just 3 more before it goes away again for who knows how long. ;_;

Really wanna re-watch Bells Are Ringing after that ep.
― "Rob is startled, this is straight up gangster" (R Baez), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)
Just to briefly step off the fanwagon here for a moment, the second half of the season does seem a bit aimless to me. I love that Bunheads has such a large and vibrant cast of characters, but the show had a lot more direction when things were focused largely on Michelle and all the kids' stories and Truly and Fanny and the town were just supporting players. Now there are whole episodes where Fanny is missing and Michelle is just on the fringes of the story and, though still likeable, are just shadows of the quality of the season's first half. If it's renewed, I hope Bunheads can find its center again.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)
Does it seem more aimless than the first half episode about Michelle trying to get a cup of coffee?
I love the second half more than the first half so far, although the first half finale was unbelievably good. Really like the ever expanding world of Paradise. Also I think that putting the spotlight on the kids for awhile is a great decision if they're trying to get a second season.
Definitely missing Fanny though.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)
Fanny is missing because Kelly Phillips has other commitments.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 23:42 (twelve years ago)
1. I've decided that I love the teen stuff. It's the show's caramel center & ASP does teens so good & these girls are almost getting their own personalities now.
2 Ballet clothes. Like, ballerinas in Casual clothes. PRETTY MUCH MY FAVORITE THING. No idea why.
3 Paris/Millie. As long as she's in the episodes that Fanny isn't in, I'm cool. She's bitchin.
Slightly drunk.\'sorry
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 February 2013 04:02 (twelve years ago)
aaaand that Bells Are Ringing scene was adorable x 100
i know the wheels fell off the story a little this season but i still love love love it so.

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 February 2013 04:17 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, that was a killer line.
I may have come across as hating all the kids' subplots. I don't. I like all of them. I just miss Michelle/Fanny being the focus. Every scene they have together is too short.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 February 2013 05:55 (twelve years ago)
You're not wrong about that.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 February 2013 07:01 (twelve years ago)
I'd been feeling down about the past 2 or 3 episodes, but tonight's was great. The miner helmet routine. Melanie saying "I guess it's time to talk about me" line. Truly...just everything she did tonight. Cozette telling Ginny the antelope story after Ginny sniffed Frankie's jacket. Lots of Michelle zings. A+
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 03:43 (twelve years ago)
That mining helmet routine was the bomb. Awesome awesome awesome. And yeah that antelope story was hilarious.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 17:55 (twelve years ago)
I just remembered the pre-intro bit too, with Boo's parents rushing over to Sasha's apartment, bringing all the children, and the spider in the bathroom. COMEDY!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)
that was pretty cute. Oh and the duelling Tommy Lee Joneses were great

Whoa, Sparks!
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:27 (twelve years ago)
It does bring to mind Lorelai destroying Lane's wedding dress while dancing to "Angst in my Pants". Also that time they were busking in Stars Hollow.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:29 (twelve years ago)
ASP has p rad taste in music, imo. At least 80's music. The GG 90's stuff got kind of exhausting
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)
Something I just learned on tumblr...young lesbians are very upset about the potential romance of Melanie and her brother's friend, because they all were convinced she should be a lesbian.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)
That dude's name-dropping of Cartier Bresson was too much even by ASP standards.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)
kinda of disappointed boo's "i don't need to worry about condoms, i'm on the pill" went unremarked upon by any of the other characters. felt like that was kind of irresponsible on the part of the show.
― just1n3, Saturday, 23 February 2013 08:35 (twelve years ago)
I thought that too, but I was hoping it was because nobody really believes that she's having sex.
― trishyb, Saturday, 23 February 2013 09:07 (twelve years ago)
Wow, that was a spectacular episode too. They must have some inkling that they'll be renewed, or else they wouldn't have ended it like that.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 03:06 (twelve years ago)
loved the Sparks dance a few episodes ago. Show feels like it has finally found its footing so it'd better get renewed.
― akm, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)
Bailey Buntain really earned her bun this half-season.
And lovely to finally have Kelly Bishop back. Wish the show wasn't going away but that's life I guess.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)
Agreed. I didn't like Ginny much in the season's first half. I didn't dislike her either, but I didn't quite understand why she was necessary. Now I get it.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 19:44 (twelve years ago)
That final scene was pretty heavy.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

ABC Family statement: “Bunheads is a wonderful series that we are very proud to have aired,” said an ABC Family rep in a statement. “The series had amazing storytelling, the most talented cast and a passionate and loyal fan base. I wonder if Etoile will last or be another one-and-done. The first episode had too much scene setting and was a bit much. Maybe it'll settle down. Husband's only comment was "I wish I was good-looking enough to dress like Luke Kirby." Still, you know, nice to see the old gang back together (Yannic Truesdale! I thought he ran a Soul Cycle these days!) and giving the ballet thing another go, I guess.
