I dunno if it's just me but I'm kind of tired of Tall Girl + Skinny Jeans brother-sister interplay

Just gonna port this whole thing ovah heah:

I have a few problems just with inconsistencies in character arcs, where they hint at developments and then seem to abandon them almost immediately

Boo + Surfer dude at the oyster bar - ? Rich fellow in early ep with the house and the driver - ?

And now where the heck did the play director go all of a sudden? AND: Truly goes out drinking with Other Lorelai & her bff and shows she's down and yet last night it was like their relationship had circled all the way back to ep 1

I enjoy it for the most part but plotwise it just feels like they don't quite have confidence in their characters yet? There's no big pushes in any direction which kinda makes me worried for a second season.

I might be giving the people in charge a bit too much credit, but I chose to interpret all of that as spinning a variety of threads they intended to pick up down the line. Y'know, like giving Michelle a number of potential suitors so as to complicate her love life by and by. Although, yeah, it may just be sloppy and poorly-planned. And it sort of is in the short term, given that this first season was so short.

Which isn't to say that there aren't structural/story problems. F'rinstance (unless the pick it back up next week), what's the deal with the friend she was playing phone tag with through the first half of the episode? He dissed her and she dropped it and...that's it?

that's kinda what I'm talking about in a nutshell. It's like they run with an idea and then, just kinda scribble it out mid episode or the next episode.

But I still loooooooove that Sherman-Palladino patter. That ratatat of the dialogue is always the thing that keeps me coming back.

And the dancing. Can I please have Not-Lorelai's yellow tap shoes? PLEASE.

The dancing is great. I read that the istanbul was constantinople tmbg dance was added as filler because the episode ran short in editing.

I haven't watched this week's episode yet but I'm hoping Sasha still has her baby goth hairdo.

I'm really hoping Tall Girl and stop sniping at each other as well. Their shtick with him having to drive her around everywhere is not a patch on when Axel had to drive Sue around everywhere on The Middle, so they should just drop it. I'm also hoping that when they get picked up for a full season (please, please!) that the tantalising guest stars like Mark from Friends and Kirk and Mitchum Huntsberger are in it a bit more.

My husband is almost as in love with Sutton Foster as he used to be with Lauren Graham, so good work there, Bunheads team.

Yeah, Sutton Foster is really a revelation, as is most of the younger cast. Would not be surprised to see some of their careers really take off.

The kids were definitely hired primarily because they can dance. The acting is a work in progress but I think Boo and Sasha are pretty good.

Thank you for trying! I'm really stupid about this kind of thing because for so long I didn't have my own computer so I never even looked into streaming or anything. But when I click on the "Play" button, it still says I need to DL "media player lite" to view it.

And clicking on that link simultaneously opens a garbage/spam tab of advertising. Does it do that for you, too?

2. the media player that loads has a smallish play arrow dead center of screen (ignore the ones to left and right); you have to hit that twice to start streaming.

The AV Club review of the episode makes a decent (if featherweight) argument for Bunheads as Twin Peaks-lite (dead character in the first episode driving subsequent actions, wacky townspeople, elliptical and premonitory dream sequences).

I didn't mind Hubbell dream sequence. It was kinda well done - slightly corny just for being a dream sequence, but I dunno. I thought it was nice. (hi I'm a cornball)

but this was maybe the best episode so far. all the threads! coming together! and Emily Gilmore went full Emily Gilmore at the end there when she yelled at whatsername. Awesome.

Tell you what though, that was a kickass version of "Maybe This Time". I loved how Foster restrained herself from going full Minnelli till the very end.

I was really impressed with the musical sequences in general in this episode. Doing Boo and Shorty's Astaire thing in a one-er in that crowded restaurant must have been a nightmare.

Yeah that was great! I liked that there was lots of dancing in this one.

Shirtless dude reminds me of a mildly-roided Dean.

The dream sequence was good because it was more Buffy/Sopranos and less Dallas.

I like all the dancin', too. It makes me miss the Borders in downtown Chicago, where you could look across the street from the third floor window and watch the Joffrey dancers practice. Too bad there's no other way to watch the Joffrey people perform...

I love this show so much.

Even if today's ep didn't have the best of storylines, it's found this insane confidence where introducing those two new students felt totally right. Also, Sasha's boyfriend coming out from behind the tree to talk to Michelle killed me.

Spending time with Boo's family (or at least her mom and dad) seems fun to me. Carl's parents are awful.

Glad they never revealed Marion. Would've been a letdown after such a build-up.

The Jenny/Melanie thing is starting to get on my nerves.

The whole Fanny/Michelle/Millie thing was pleasant, but Millie's personality may be a little overplayed.

Really wanna re-watch Bells Are Ringing after that ep.

Just to briefly step off the fanwagon here for a moment, the second half of the season does seem a bit aimless to me. I love that Bunheads has such a large and vibrant cast of characters, but the show had a lot more direction when things were focused largely on Michelle and all the kids' stories and Truly and Fanny and the town were just supporting players. Now there are whole episodes where Fanny is missing and Michelle is just on the fringes of the story and, though still likeable, are just shadows of the quality of the season's first half. If it's renewed, I hope Bunheads can find its center again.

Does it seem more aimless than the first half episode about Michelle trying to get a cup of coffee?

I love the second half more than the first half so far, although the first half finale was unbelievably good. Really like the ever expanding world of Paradise. Also I think that putting the spotlight on the kids for awhile is a great decision if they're trying to get a second season.

Definitely missing Fanny though.

Fanny is missing because Kelly Phillips has other commitments.

1. I've decided that I love the teen stuff. It's the show's caramel center & ASP does teens so good & these girls are almost getting their own personalities now.

2 Ballet clothes. Like, ballerinas in Casual clothes. PRETTY MUCH MY FAVORITE THING. No idea why.

3 Paris/Millie. As long as she's in the episodes that Fanny isn't in, I'm cool. She's bitchin.

I may have come across as hating all the kids' subplots. I don't. I like all of them. I just miss Michelle/Fanny being the focus. Every scene they have together is too short.

I'd been feeling down about the past 2 or 3 episodes, but tonight's was great. The miner helmet routine. Melanie saying "I guess it's time to talk about me" line. Truly...just everything she did tonight. Cozette telling Ginny the antelope story after Ginny sniffed Frankie's jacket. Lots of Michelle zings. A+

That mining helmet routine was the bomb. Awesome awesome awesome. And yeah that antelope story was hilarious.

I just remembered the pre-intro bit too, with Boo's parents rushing over to Sasha's apartment, bringing all the children, and the spider in the bathroom. COMEDY!

kinda of disappointed boo's "i don't need to worry about condoms, i'm on the pill" went unremarked upon by any of the other characters. felt like that was kind of irresponsible on the part of the show.

Finally watched Monday's ep this weekend, omg so good! Yeah Ginny is KILLING it. Even her dancing seems to have improved? Maybe it's just me but I notice her way more in the dance numbers now.

I wonder if Etoile will last or be another one-and-done. The first episode had too much scene setting and was a bit much. Maybe it'll settle down.
