everybody on ilx complains about reddit

This thread title is both an observation and an invitation!

The way you guys complain about reddit and its users, it seems like it must make it's way into your lives quite a bit. But I only hear about it through ilx! Except for the Obama thing, I think I heard about that in a newspaper or something. So how do you guys know so much about redditors and their loathsome opinions?

Are you all reddit users too and when you go over there, do you complain about ilxor?
Do people share contemptible reddit links on your facebook/twitter?
When you're out at the club, do people ask you if you saw that thing on reddit?

i have some irl friends who are active on reddit.

at first i only knew of reddit because my wife started forwarding me a bunch of the image memes from whichever board of theirs focuses only on pictures. i started clicking around the site and ended up on one of those creepy boards dedicated to men and how terrible women are and have p much written the site off since. i mean, i'm sure there are some just fine places on reddit, but i got a really uncomfortable vibe from it.

only thing i know about reddit is there's this crazy keyboard techno-busker in town who's constantly trying to get his Facebook "fans" to sign up to it so they can vote for him in a poll, except he keeps writing the wrong instructions on exactly what to do and he's been at it for days and days....

challenged a friend on that and he offered the semi-convincing argument that you can control your subscriptions or whatever and make the site into whatever you want it to be. but i still steer clear.

I don't know, but both times I've been on reddit it was full of this stuff. either way I think my point stands. this is just how young people communicate.

the niche subreddits are fine because they're usually small and of likeminded people

That said, “Redditors” are mostly awful 20 something white male alpha nerd atheist gamer types who think they’ve got the world figured out and they’re insufferable and have terrible taste in everything.

there's a disconnect between what some notable people (some of whom probably should know better) who end up doing IAMAs think reddit's readership is like and how it actually is, that you get a lot of cool people who aren't joss whedon getting only a few responses to the point where you can ask, say, James Fallows a question and it will probably get answered. It's kind of nice!

I don't think I 'get' reddit... I've only ever seen a couple of the ask me anything threads and they just kind of seemed like the comments section of the av club or whatever.

Metafilter is much better than reddit imo, but they both have their uses. With reddit, the key is to register and then only subscribe to the subreddits that have actual interesting content.

But ye I spend time on both: Metafilter gives better link than reddit, but for tech stuff I can bear the horrible nerds on the programming reddit more than the "bro, bro, watch me pivot" clan on Hacker News

(The traffic that reddit sends is astounding, btw. We more than doubled our daily average when a link got on reddit, and it wasn't even on the front page, it was buried somewhere with 5 upvotes)

I think there are cooler dudes per capita on metafilter but on average it's about the same as reddit. i'd recommend straightdope over metafilter.

metafilter still consistently trafficked, I've spotted a few ilxors over there. I think the median age seems older, but there are a lot of known personalities and in-jokes and, yeah, very po-faced these days

reddit's frontpage culture is like a whirlpool of mediocrity sucking in a variety of interests but ends up pandering to a 20 year old white male in college who plays video games, likes cat pictures, and has odd paternalistic or misogynistic views but no self-consciousness about it. I can skim over the front page or two occasionally if I want lots of links but little content, and can go to specific areas that are about topics. Most of the topical areas are total cesspools, but it's a large enough site that some of them get enough traffic to gain popularity.

The image-site mining areas and the people exposing themselves for site cred are kind of the worst

pretty much none of the tumblrs I follow ever have any written content, so I forget that there is this other tumblr where people write stuff.

I started a thread like this a week ago, but no one commented on it. Oh well.

With the spare time I've had to myself since I made that thread and my wife left me, I have this new way of organizing snacks.

I've tried to dig into reddit a couple times (halfheartedly) since my job involves internet & social media but the way comments are threaded I find it super confusing and non-user-friendly

But I'm not registered and I avoid the comments. The people who post there and like 89% of the boards are pure (something)awful.

yeah SA these days is mostly just a bunch of jaded nerds, they relinquished the whole meme generation/funny photoshop aspect of the site to reddit years ago

and the funniest people on SA have all moved their acts to twitter anyway

it all kind of depends which forum you're on. some of them are full of really helpful and geeky people (such as the music board), who don't mind writing 3,000 words on Muse or whatever if you ask them "what's the best album"? other forums are full of people who try way, way too hard to imitate old front page articles, "wouldn't it be funny if I talked about something mundane but used a lot of fucking profanity!?"

One of the dudes who died in the attack on the US consulate in Libya was a SA goon. Pretty influential in their community for the game EVE online. My friend seems to mostly go to that forum and the car one.

Not sure what forum my other friend frequented on there, but she was on SA for a really long time.

When somebody tries too hard to go viral you end up with stuff like those bizarre Quizno's commercials or Snakes on a Plane. I don't know how many huge viral videos out there were made with the specific intent of going viral (maybe "Chocolate Rain"??)

I'm not sure to what extent this still exists but basically it was some poor guy who wrote this 200 page fanfic about Sonic that was absolutely insane in all the worst ways, like 3rd-grade level writing, but half of it was made up of these bizarre sex scenes, and some of the SA guys did dramatic readings and even made animated videos of some of these excerpts which probably made me laugh harder than anything else on the internet. I have to see if it's still up somewhere.

4 points to defend my reddit usage:

2. interesting sub boards appeared over the years so now i check it pretty much every day. i use it like it has been said upthread , i selected a bunch of sub boards about stuff i am interested in and use it like a news aggregator. so... now i can waste even more time consuming choice informational tidbits about indie gaming, futurist stuff, useless talents, streaming good documentaries, skeptics lols and of course there are also the boards highly moderated for quality control about philosophy, history, social justice etc etc.

3. there is a sub board for my peeps! the québécois. there is only 3000 people subscribed to it but i think that is so cool, it's the first time that i am part of a french speaking online community. we talk about items in the news, politics, pop culture, just ordinary stuff that we have in common and it does good 2 me.

one of my closest friends spends a lot of time on metafilter and lj/tumblr 'fandom' spaces and we spend a slightly embarrassing amount of time comparing internet beefs/discussions/news reactions and talking about the culture of different spaces. it is endlessly fascinating to me.

It probably comes as no surprise that I really hate the term “fee-fees.” For those of you more fortunate than I, “fee-fees” is a disparaging term that SJ folks throw around. tumblr's kind of amazing, isn't it - there are so many different cultures happening on it, and when you talk about it you'd say "people who have tumblrs" and assume your interlocutor knows what you mean but maybe their experience of tumblr is totally different, maybe they think you mean SJ folks and actually you mean street fashion folks.

basically i would like someone to do a project where they 'map' tumblr to work out what percentage is taken up by different cultures, and how these cultures cross over.

of course the fascination is only increased by how opaque tumblr is - the 'notes' that don't differentiate likes and reblogs, how hard it is to follow reblogged conversation, the way that if you follow more than 100 people you stop seeing posts from the people you followed first (apparently), the crufty tag system. nothing like the clarity of e.g. a reddit or a slashdot or a mefi.

I registered for reddit like six years ago; I'll look at the front page now and then, tried to set up subreddits as a way to prise some kind of utility out of the place, failed. I definitely know ppl (non ilx) that READ it for time wasting (cats) but I don't think anyone i know actually "reddits." commenting system is confusing, lots of idiots, etc. many corners best left uninvestigated (in addition to the out and out misogyny and paternalism that mh referenced, there's creepy picture subreddits...which, I actually found out about because of, I think, a link on the front page to the gawker story about same).

it's not a revolutionary idea but who knows maybe it will have some pop legs.

There are a couple subreddits for very specialized tech/science stuff which there's basically no substitute for at the moment. I'd be happy if they migrated to a less overall screwed up environment, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Some of the other speciality subreddits aren't bad for skimming either. At this point tho, I think the problems with reddit are almost "the problems with lots and lots of young people whose jobs give them time to waste on the internet."

I hate reddit cause I hate the vote-up-vote-down/collapse-expand nested post format. That design (along with other things) also makes Daily Kos unreadable.

Also its full of the same tech-worshiping lolbertarians that used to be on Digg.

Ubiquitous up/downvotes help cut down on "me too" noise. For the subreddits I'm on the nested format works pretty well. Discussions also only rarely go past ~40 posts. (And tend to hover around 10 usually). When they do go past about 50, things become pretty unmanageable. At a certain scale, you're not having one discussion any more, but just sort of wandering a cocktail party and eavesdropping on lots of completely unrelated conversations.

ALMOST WENT TO JAIL/BANNED FROM CAMPUS FOR DOING DAYGAME

For the past 3 weeks I have been sarging a local university campus after school trying to get over my approach anxiety. I have done extremely well. Some days not so much, but I am seeing a great improvement in general. Used to, the very thought of approaching a hot girl would give me anxiety, but now I can talk to them like it's no big deal.

I admit it was dark when I did my last approach for the day, a 2 set walking to their dorm. I ran up to them and said, "hey you guys. Relax, this is not a robbery. I just have to tell you I saw you guys back there and I thought you were really cute and I had to come say hi." They laughed, so I introduced myself. Afterward, they started to walk away. I tried to save the set by saying, "so where are you guys going right now?" And they said back to their dorm. I ejected at that point, and told them it was nice meeting them and left. (Keep in mind I have NO GAME yet.)

About 15 minutes later I go back to my car, get in and a cop in an SUV pulls up next to me.

"I need you to step out of the car. I'm campus police."

I thought "what the hell did I do?" But complied anyway. Once I stepped out, he radioed a bunch of cops and they all surrounded me. I was scared shitless. "What did I do?" I asked. "You're creeping people out." He said. He asked me where I had been recently and I told him what I was doing. Then I proceeded to tell him the whole story-how I was trying to improve my skills with women by talking to as many as I could. Then the cop behind me chimed in and berated me. They said the girls got scared when I told them "this is not a robbery." I tried to explain it some more, I said that as halfway a joke and half way to keep them from thinking that, to no effect. That's a line I got from Sasha Daygame for God's sake. "You're a fucking weirdo." He said, "and I consider you a threat to the mental health of my campus."
