I think I have a thing in my brain that just tunes out sport talk the moment it happens. If sport comes up in conversation or on telly all I hear is "blahblahblahblah" MAybe if I didn't have this handy cerebral device I might learn something, but sadly it's there to stay.

i had assumed this is why crut revived the thread.

what i dislike most about the ice bucket challenge is that i feel like a terrible human being for not caring. at the same time i don't want to be cajoled into caring. someone nominated me the other day and every other post on FB is someone doing the IBC and nominating their friends and I just want it to blow over so i don't feel like a complete shit for not getting involved, but honestly...

it goes without saying that there's nothing wrong with people doing sponsored events to raise awareness for charity; it's a good cause and i'm not criticising anyone who takes part. But it's the 'chain letterness' and the organised fun-ness of the challenge - the idea that if you're nominated you HAVE to do it or else you're a heartless cowardly fun-hater. fuck it, i'll prob donate something all the same, if only to feel better about not dumping ice water on my head and uploading the film for everyone to see. and then what? all I'll have done is bought myself off. i haven't 'cared', i've simply bought a 'get out of guilt free' card for my conscience. meanwhile, if everyone on FB is donating to ALS doesn't that mean a lot of contributions that would otherwise go to other charities during this period get reallocated?

also i've never cared for flowers, how they look and especially how they smell. they all smell of grass to me, barring a few which smell like a sneeze against a mirror.

recognizing problems is obviously the first step in trying to solve them, or else align one's personal conduct in ways that would make it less harmful. it is in this sense that saying you "don't care" about an important issue, be it the ecological crisis or racism, seems negligent.

that said, compartmentalization is an important coping mechanism and i don't really think clouds was being condescending as much as descriptive. there is a reason people don't like to think about the problems over which they, individually, are basically powerless. the issue is that when everyone does this the issues are never addressed.

Didn't previously know about Stipe's tumblr, just been looking at it for a while.

I think tumblr is amazing in some ways but there's quite a few major annoyances.

I joined it for maybe 20 minutes and couldn't stand the way to browse all the posts you subscribe to. You just scroll up and down all the content in chronological order until your page crashes. I didn't see any options to change this way of browsing.
I really wished they used the deviantart system of checking off posts that you've read and being able to save some posts for later because some are going to require much more of your time. And I can't really give my full attention to political posts in amongst all the porn in the stream too, I'd like to separate that stuff for different times.

Even on tumblr sites I like there's just way too much and I wish more people be be more selective about what they posted or reblogged. Sometimes you have to wade through so much.

People quote a lot of impressive statements from writers and artists but something seems a bit off to me about all these little clippings of people saying cool stuff you agree with. I can't quite say what.

A lot of the piracy that goes on is quite hard to fight too, since so much content is shared so quickly amongst so many.

It's a pain in the ass visiting all the sites individually but I found joining the site even worse.
