NY crix, having wrapped crix screenings of crix films for the end of crix season (and not keen on screeners of hoi polloi faves such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in their mailboxes), say October 18th is early enough.

Bernie, gtfo.
I haven't seen any of those other Goth nominees aside from Moonrise Kingdom. Thure Lindhardt got mentioned for Keep the Lights On, tho. Not gonna sweat it this year while I'm recuperating.
In the Family is last year by NY standards.

Living in Denmark, almost every worthwhile picture of 2012 will first be in cinemas in 2013. My list is pretty simple:
1. Moonrise Kingdom2. The Dark Knight Rises
Actually, that's not true, Holy Motors premieres in a month. That will probably make my top three as well.

The five films nominated in IDA’s Best Feature category include The Central Park Five (Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon), The Invisible War (Kirby Dick), The Queen of Versailles (Lauren Greenfield), Searching for Sugar Man (Malik Bendjelloul), and Women With Cows (Peter Gerdehag).

I've seen only one of those: Searching for Sugar Man, which is kind of like a respectable, non-comedic variation on the Anvil! story.

I've seen exactly two 2012 movies so far--Chronicle (very good!) and Payback (meh)--and neither were on the list!
Don't go to the theatres much and end up catching most new releases a year or two after the fact. From this list, though, here's all that I definitely want to see (though I'm open to being convinced on others):
"Argo," directed by Ben Affleck (Theaters)"How to Survive a Plague," directed by David France (Theaters -- also on VOD)"Keep the Lights On," directed by Ira Sachs (Theaters)"The Loneliest Planet," directed by Julia Loktev (Theaters -- also on VOD)"Looper," directed by Rian Johnson (Theaters)"The Master," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (Theaters)"Searching For Sugar Man," directed by Malik Bendjelloul (Theaters)"Skyfall," directed by Sam Mendes (Theaters)"Beasts of the Southern Wild," directed by Benh Zeitlin (Buy It, starting 12/4)"Brave," directed by Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, and Steve Purcell (Buy It, starting 11/13)"Moonrise Kingdom," directed by Wes Anderson (Rent It)"Bernie," directed by Richard Linklater (Watch It)"I Wish," directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Watch It)"Oslo, August 31st," directed by Joachim Trier (Watch It)

Look at the release pattern, if that word even applies, for the entirely "accessible" Argentine film Las Acacias. Where did this 'limited' US releaase take place? It only showed in NY at MoMA during the New Directors/New Films fest.

Hey guys. No reason to fret any more. EW's latest issue has a graphic that boils down best actor to Day-Lewis vs. Hawkes, actress to Lawrence vs. Watts, supporting actress to Hathaway vs. Hunt and picture to Argo vs. Life of Pi.
I guess only supporting actor has more than two candidates anymore.

Argo is a sure-fire nominee, but Warner Bros. has to walk the line between maintaining its support and not wearing out its welcome. It’s easier for a film like The Artist to cling to front-runner status in a year when there isn’t a lot of major competition, but Argo will face an especially strong line-up of heavy-hitter challengers.

If there's one thing I remember about last year, it's definitely how there weren't any movies that were even remotely in the same league as The Artist. I don't think anything else was even nominated, come to think of it.

Maybe a victory for clear front-runner Day-Lewis will be considered recognition enough by voters, who have a lot of other choices for Best Picture.
A good-maybe-great movie's least interesting element getting its only awards traction? Sounds about right.

Everything wise and witty has long since been said - by minds more mature and talents far greater than mine. For me to thank you as equals would be presumptuous - I am an apprentice in detrius and have much to learn from you all. I can say only that I am proud and happy and that I regard this great thread not so much as an award for what I have achieved, but as a standard to hold against what I have yet to accomplish.

Your Sister's Sister has one my very favourite scenes of the year, when Iris and Hannah are whispering to each other late at night in bed. So beautifully conceived and played.
Wasn't as enthused about the film as a whole.

also wonder what clever sods will cheat and put it and Holy Motors in the same spot on their list because they're both centred around limos and weird
Critic K3v1n B. L33 on FB sez: "As of now, both the best and worst films on my 2012 movie list are set in Iran. Both are about how filmmaking can save lives under threat of violence and oppression. Only one of them actually demonstrates exceptionally resourceful filmmaking in action. The other is just a recycling of 20th century "third world action movie" cliches, reeking of Hollywood's smugness over the power of its lies."

― jed_, Sunday, 25 November 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)
Don't see a thread for it here, but dear god is Compliance the single biggest missed opportunity of the year. It could've been one of the great real-life horror movies ever had they not made the decision to cut away to the smirking, pervert prank caller halfway through. Totally undermines the microscopic study of people fundamentally ignorant of their rights bending under presumed authority and instead turns it into a pretentious Phone Booth. (Am now seeing that a number of other reviewers have basically made that same argument.)
That said, Ann Dowd definitely gets swapped into Gerwig/Meryl's slot. The moment when she takes the employee's clothes out to her car without a qualm but pauses to make sure that she cleans up the fast food bags from the floor of the vehicle is just perfect.

Variety: Movies still too damn long
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118062671
The data also shows that length is more of a turn-off for younger moviegoers. That may be a silver lining (both puns intended) for this year's crop of Oscar wannabes, every single one of which eclipses two hours -- except "Argo," which uses each of its 120 minutes to good effect.

There's like a weird dead zone for me between 105 minutes and 165 minutes. Less than that is admirably spry, more than that is probably using its duration as a formal device. In the middle is so often meh.
I mean, all movies should really be either 450 minutes or 12 seconds long.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)
we should just pick a length and make every movie conform to it, it'll probably spark more creativity than letting any old length happen

carpetbagger:
"Here, a list of the things we learned at our fourth consecutive Gothams, Part 1:
Jared Leto is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Under the pseudonym Bartholomew Cubbins, Mr. Leto, the actor and frontman of the band Thirty Seconds to Mars, made “Artifact,” the story of the group fighting to get out of its contract with the record label, EMI, which sued it for $30 million. The suit was later settled and the band made a concept album, “This Is War.” The film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and picked up the audience award at the Gothams. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Leto, sporting a ponytail and nail polish, thanked his mother, for teaching him how to lead a creative life.
Jared Leto has a lot of devoted Twitter fans. Upon learning of his win online, many replied that they were in tears, especially at his thanking of his mom. Mr. Leto and his date were seated at the Bagger’s table; they did not return after he won.
freakiiing▲Inna@Breathing_30STM @JaredLeto You brought me to tears with all ur tweets. Jared, how can you be such a wonderful person? Thank you for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.25 Nov 12
Jared Leto is starving himself – apparently for a role in “Dallas Buyers Club” with Matthew McConaughey, about the first users of the AIDS drug AZT – and yet still has a sense of humor
“I haven’t eaten in 21 days,” he told Mr. Birbiglia, after his opening monologue, “and that made me laugh.”"

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, The Grey, and Attenberg. Of those of these that I've seen, that is.

I liked The Grey and Beyond the Black Rainbow.
Fuck The Turin Horse.

I'd have been much more impressed with a movie about life as tedium that *wasn't* so fucking tedious. (And didactic.)
But I actually saw it at Telluride in '10 so it doesn't get to be the worst movie of 2011 for me
― Simon H., Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:00 (thirteen years ago)

― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:09 (thirteen years ago)
I mean, I know there's a doilied old biddy audience out there for these stuffy, cursivey movies. But Murray seems to be grimacing his way through it.

I really dug Loneliest Planet, maybe only slightly less than DNDN. Loktev always gets great spatial depth with her images.

Wow. Really? What about the scene where Ali is getting pulverised in the fight, all is lost and everything goes into slo-mo. But then catching sight of brave Stephanie wobbling towards him on her prosthetic legs is suddenly enough to rally him into fighting back and he wins! And the bit where one shag is enough to knock the trauma and depression out of Stephanie and she sticks on Katy Perry and she's back doing her whale training moves/dance, just like that! And the ending, where we're suddenly in a snowy location, the only time we're away from the film's primary setting, seemingly just to have a shamelessly Big Emotional denouement. The film has the naturalistic look and feel of your typical indie film, and is very understated, but then it lapses into moments of pure melodrama in order to pull on your heartstrings.

I watched Plague Friday night, and it is a more narratively focused (and conventional) doc than Jim Hubbard's United in Anger: A History of ACT UP, which I saw the next day at MoMA (it uses much of the same archival footage).

― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)
Sicinski says "The current parallel doc, UNITED IN ANGER, based on clips I've seen, is hyper-conventional. PLAGUE shows what it's like to act and organize from inside panic and confusion, to be *on* the shifting terrain."
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:26 (thirteen years ago)
"hyper" is a bit much. It does point out the obvious that in addition to intense and panic-stricken, ACT UP meetings were cruisy.
and I expected this:

This is the worst. I got into a heated e-mail exchange a couple of years ago with Jaymc's Film-Critic Friend b/c he was trying to make Oscar predix based on how often various guild/crix nominations matched up with Oscar noms. Like, because on average, 3/5 of the BFCA's best director nominees also get nominated for Oscars, then we can assume that the average will hold as an exact tried-and-true percentage from year to year, and the only challenge is to figure out which 2 BFCA nominees will be left in the dust by AMPAS. This is beyond dumb -- the sample is too small and the variables are too great to extrapolate anything meaningful from these historical comparisons.
― Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

Guess Ed was right.
That's not a sweep. Weisz over Chastain, uh, fuckyeah.
Most overall zzzzzz history of all four acting categories?
Snored through McC, huh, and Weisz too lifelike? Didn't look too hard but 2006 was Forest Whitaker, Helen Mirren, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Hudson. FW was kinda embarrassing, skipped the other 3.
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)
No, I meant best lead actor category has had the most boringest history overall with the NYFCC. Or at least the one with the least adventurous choices.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)
Have any of the ILX film hivemind seen The Sessions? It has a lot of positive reviews but it seems like such dire oscarbait.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:46 (thirteen years ago)
M@rk H@rris is on a crusade against the word Oscarbait this year. But, yes, The Sessions is Oscarbait. Not even so much "mature" about its sexual content as it is just plain open/explicit. (Also, seems like the dude had more women at his side than Guido Anselmi.)
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:50 (thirteen years ago)
I dunno Eric, NYFCC's Best Actors probably come out ahead of AAs if you go thru the last 30 years (Thewlis, Newman for NF, Irons for DR, Steve Martin).
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)
Both can still be true.

The New York Critics finished the '90s with an excellent run: Fonda in Ulee's Gold, Nolte in Affliction, and Farnsworth in The Straight Story. (Don't remember Fonda as well as the other two.)
― clemenza, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:06 (thirteen years ago)
sure.
I think I will nominate jafar Panahi for best actor, tho he doesn't show up here:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/criticwire/the-criticwire-survey-the-best-performances-of-the-year#
AND cosign:
Scott Nye, Rail of Tomorrow:
"While there have probably been richer, deeper performances, I'm going to use this space to give a shout-out to Yoo Jun-sang in Hong Sang-soo's 'In Another Country.' Yoo takes a role that's of little consequence in an almost pointedly inconsequential film and fills every moment onscreen with a manner of life and vitality I haven't seen in any other performance this year. Just seeing him walk or run is vastly entertaining, nevermind the exuberant will to please everyone with whom he interacts. It's rare to find a performer, especially these days, who can entertain just by appearing onscreen, but Yoo achieves that marvelously."
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:09 (thirteen years ago)
Has anyone ever won an award for two separate roles like McConaughey? I guess either must have received an equal number of votes, but why bother?

― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:17 (thirteen years ago)
Wow. The film has the naturalistic look and feel of your typical indie film, and is very understated, but then it lapses into moments of pure melodrama in order to pull on your heartstrings.― DavidM, Friday, November 30, 2012 9:33 AM (4 days ago) Bookmark

really! (and sorry for the delay replying) while i do recognise your descriptions of the scenes you had a problem with they just didn't play out that way, for me. melodrama? yes but life can play that way. particularly the scene after she's had sex again and dances in her chair along to "fireworks" i found that moving and real, especially following on from the amputation and depression/slow recovery (and i can vividly imagine of the scenery chewing performances and american or english actress would have used here, cotillard was incredibly subtle). i've been down often enough to know that something can flip you into a kind of ecstatic state at your lowest point. it's not logical but it is real and that scene seemed very real and believable to me. and honestly not sentimental.
― jed_, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)
Bernie was a way to atone for the apostasy of voting for a pleasure as vulgar as Magic Mike.
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)
although i think the last part of the film has structural problems and lacks the punch it could have because cotillard is absent. the last part suffers from a lack of melodrama imo.
xpost to myself.

If you're talking about the Academy Awards, you can get separate nominations--e.g., Greta Garbo twice for Best Actress in 1930. (It's always one lead + one supporting nowadays.) If you mean the New York Critics, it looks like they periodically give someone one award for multiple roles--e.g., Jack Nicholson in '87 for Broadcast News, Ironweed, and The Witches of Eastwick, or Hope Davis in 2003.
Weirdest example: Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Going My Way.

I think the Academy changed its rules to avoid a Fitzgerald situation (but not for director, e.g. Soderbergh in 2000).

Hoberman on the 5-hour marathon:
An early favorite for Best Director, Paul Thomas Anderson was overwhelmed by Kathryn Bigelow on the second ballot, with Ben Affleck (“Argo”) finishing a distant third. (Strikingly, Steven Spielberg, who failed to get a single first ballot votes, was never in contention.) By this time, it was evident that “Zero Dark Thirty” would run the table and, indeed, “The Master” finished third for Best Picture behind “Argo,” although it took three ballots for the obviously exhausted voters to decide the winner.

http://www.awardsdaily.com/blog/2012/12/03/15-documentary-features-advance-in-oscar-race/
The year’s best documentaries – Ken Burns, The Central Park Five doc, Queen of Versailles, Samsara, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and West of Memphis shut out of the Oscar race. That is mind-blowing. The new rules were supposed to stop this kind of assfuckery from happening. I remain astounded. Then again, they always have their weird ways of doing things and can’t be predicted. They seem to always resent it when others try to predict what they will or won’t do. This, I have to say, is a NEW LOW. It’s a terrible thing, too, to have the Central Park Five win the New York Film Critics the same day AMPAS releases its 15 finalists
SS also gets amusingly butthurt when the grand narrative of "awards = quality" doesn't fall into place.

Just watched The Dark Knight Rises last night, and I can't be happier that it seems be getting shut out of most of these lists. I sorta liked the first two in this series, all the while realizing that they completely fell apart on any reflection, but this one was just too much. An anti-nuke film with a strong fetish for what is essentially military gear? One pro-Occupy Wall Street anti-hero cancelled out by the introduction of a violent revolutionary whose presence ends up justifying good old law and order (and salvation from a private enterprise, weapons manufacturing billionaire) in the end? Bullshit.
Kudos, I guess, for making Catwoman lesbian, and for Joseph Gordon Levitt's best performance in years.

nice list, thanx for the link, morbs
i agree w/ him abt wheatley's kill list, which to my mind is the best and most original 'horror' film i've seen since the blair witch project, and already a stone classic, to my mind. unfortunately, wheatley's new film, sightseers, is nowhere near as good, though charitably i would count it as a minor failed experiment and hope for better things next time. at the very least, in the space of three small films wheatley has really established a p unique signature style.
was in two minds abt seeing seven psychopaths tomorrow, but must admit comparisons to the last movie are p persuasive - love that film - even tho' i only sort've liked in bruges

there are no age restrictions for "people who are really into les mis and/or rent", you just need to spend more time backstage at high school/college/community theatres

As bad as most of the cast is, it's really Hooper's absurd dedication to making it "gritty" and "realistic" that dooms it, in a variety of ways.

Just watched Oslo, August 31st last night, thought it was very good. And oddly not as grim as it seemed like it should be? Sort of like a modest-scaled Tree of Life with the poetry pared down to a Scandinavian minimum.

No one would argue against the idea that one particular scene in Skyfall pushed it OTT for that award. Though I like a lot of the Straw Dogs stuff at the end, too. xp Toronto, just moved here from Mtl a few months ago.
I can't front on Turin as being visually spectacular - it would take it for the opening shot alone - a perfect accompaniment to the overtures of apocalypse. But I also don't think there's any great accomplishment in making a movie about life-as-drudgery that's also a bore and a half to actually sit through, not to mention painfully obvious in the way it spells out its themes.
Mind you, it's my first Tarr and I saw it in the middle of fest crunch at Telluride, maybe a rewatch would enhance my appreciation. Mostly I just want to check out Werckmeister instead.

lol @ Anthony Lane's Hobbit review:
For pathos, though, we still have Gollum, the damned and slimy soul (voiced again by Andy Serkis), who lurks in the dark and loses what he loves. Bilbo finds it: “His hand met what felt like a tiny ring of cold metal lying on the floor of the tunnel.” That is the account given by Tolkien, who knew that turning points were all the more momentous for being unadorned, but Jackson, with so much room to spare, cannot dare to underplay the crux. Instead, before Bilbo stumbles upon the ring, we see it slip from Gollum’s safekeeping, tumble in refulgent slow motion, and, on impact, give a resounding clang. (If Jackson ever films “Othello,” wait for Desdemona’s handkerchief to hit the ground like a sheet of tin.)

That is to say, instead of Emmanuelle Riva (who is probably not SAG eligible) and Rachel Weisz (who undoubtedly is), they nominated Helen Mirren for Hitchcock.

Hate to say it, but N@thaniel R. was probably right when he said that the Oscars, when faced with a relatively rich, diverse slate of contenders in best actress, will usually revert to business as usual names coasting in cheap, baity parts i.e. Mirren.

He cited Dench in Mrs. Henderson Presents as precedent, but I can't remember if '05 had a lot of good options.

The Brazilian Neighboring Sounds is a simmering, very handsome widescreen x-ray of a city neighborhood with condo towers rising above the working-class nabe, and the powerful (crime-based) families that straddle both milieus. A little too neat and clever in the end, but great sound design and director seems to have a promising future (he's a critic).

From the CFCA site:
Membership in the Chicago Film Critics Association is restricted to professional (paid) film critics recognized by producers or editors of commercial media outlets as their official critical voice or staff authority on the cinematic arts.
Looks like there are about 50 critics listed, including (as always) Jaymc's Film-Critic Friend. Obv. not all are writing for print pubs or for outlets recognizably based in Chicago.

I struggled with alot of my answers, especially in the actress categories, since I clearly haven’t seen enough movies with good roles for women. I mean, I love Rachel Weisz, but you guys know which movie called DEEP BLUE SEA I’ve seen, and I’m pretty sure she wasn’t in it. I’m kind of embarrassed of some of those votes. I feel pretty good about honoring Jessica Biel for THE TALL MAN, though, and definitely Salma Hayek for SAVAGES. I’m not taking that one back. One category where I thought I would agree with the consensus was Daniel Day Lewis for best actor (he played Lincoln), but he ended up #3. #1 went to Joaquin (Popeye), who was my second place vote.

― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 23 December 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)
Schroeter is fantastic but somewhat rougher and tougher, never fitted in w/the narrative around New German Cinema, so we got Herzog's charming voice and Nick Cave fkn around in Berlin instead.
Apart from The Death of Maria Malibran I've seen Malina (w/Huppert in the main role). Hope there is a retrospective over here someday.
Wasn't too keen on Tabu but I wasn't having the best of days when I saw it.
Really excited to catch Beyond the Hills in 2013. Hopefully Almayer’s Folly too, not sure whether it will get much more than the odd screening though.

I took no note of The Comedy until it started to make lists, esp of critics who live in Brooklyn.
Eric, did we get The Imposter in the mail? I've lost track.
WIll probably cave and see Silver Linings tom'w so I can vote for best actress w/ a clear conscience.

I think Lawrence is fine in that but tbh I think you can vote w/ a clear conscience without seeing it.

the shifting sympathies of the film were interesting to me - when it starts out you're thinking how chill the dad seems and how irritating the mom is, but as the movie goes on you realize he's a creep and an asshole, and come to admire her for her warmth
i dont know if the movie is devastating but im glad it goes for the give-them-enough-rope approach
― turds (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 4 January 2013 17:49 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I think Lawrence is the least essential contender in that field.

Tarantino ineligible cuz he uses crayons, right?
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 January 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
From the last go-around:
Tarantino is not a member of the WGA or the DGA, and his films (Weinstein Co.'s Basterds in this case) are not made under those guilds' agreements.
It could be that he's not a guild member because he does, in fact, use crayons.

i thought i read that tarantino finally joined the DGA

Wells is a hack, no?
And what's with the DGA not nominating Silver Linings Playbook's David O. Russell, who did everything right and extracted several killer performances and wrote the adaptation and put his personal history into the film and created the most appealing ride of the year?
"did everything right" = meaningless "wrote the adaptation" = has no bearing on a directing award"put his personal history into the film" = really has no bearing on a directing award"created the most appealing ride of the year" = says you, I guess
So, sure, he got some good performances out of Cooper, Lawrence, De Niro, etc. But it's not like SLP is some kind of masterfully directed film. (Pun ... intended?)

That's like his 9th ASC award; Oscar aren't going to give it to him until he shoots 3-D.

My year-end, then it's time to shut out the lights.
1. Knuckleball2. The Pruitt-Igoe Myth3. Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners4. Inventing David Geffen5. Promised Land6. How to Survive a Plague7. The House I Live In8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower9. Looper10. Moonrise Kingdom
It takes me a while to see 10 I like enough to list. Lincoln and Amour I'll call Well Made Films that just don't stay with me--Zero Dark Thirty and Argo less than that, and The Master less still. I probably saw another 10-15 besides those.
