i just figured what the heck

dunno if i will watch this thing

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 21 October 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

mostly i just wish this election was over already

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 21 October 2012 03:22 (thirteen years ago)

Romney's clumsiness (to put it charitably) with foreign policy notwithstanding, not sure if Obama can gain much out of tomorrow night. One, my guess is that fewer people watch the third debate; two, there've already been two, and anyone who was going to be influenced probably already has; three, it appears that Obama didn't get much out of the second one.

clemenza, Sunday, 21 October 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

Conference call, voting machines. Latching down hard on those two things could seal the deal for O. Hard to swing in a foreign policy debate, though, I guess.

Schieffer's as old as Lehrer, so maybe he'll just nod off while they talk about whatever they want.

Schieffer is a granitehead even as senescent CBS types go.

Also, well, early voting in full force.

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 21 October 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

what do you mean by conference call, voting machines, lunch? sorry, morning fog in my brain here

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 21 October 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

Conference call, voting machines, Romney being unsurprisingly but still brazenly underhanded and amoral in his attempts to swing the election utilizing methods that are just this side of illegal (in a way not at all unfamiliar to corporate oligarchs).

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

I realize I should know better by now, but I really can't believe the conference call hasn't become a bigger story, just on sheer juicy whiff of scandal narrative stuff for a slow news day.

I'd like to see the results of other, similar polls. Have there been any?

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 21 October 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

first thing i've seen on it - it could be one of those things where if you ask the american ppl they'll guess at a right answer but support in reality is very very soft (cf polling on universal health care over the past how many decades). still i would hope that after having very recently dug ourselves out of one money and blood sucking quagmire in iraq and just now starting to begin to dig ourselves out of another in afghanistan that their gut reflex might be not to go jump into another one in iran. curious what the numbers are on syria, where there's a much stronger case to be made logistically and 'morally', how much of this is tied into 30+ years of historical hatred of iran and romney neocon and us likudniks rattling swords about iran's 'nuclear capabilities'. considering all the 'responsible' concern over the deficit from washington media i'm curious if there will be any questioning of romney about how he would pay for whatever invasions and occupations he's got in store for us. not holding my breath.

balls, Monday, 22 October 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

I would bet the numbers would look more or less the same if you replaced 'iran' with 'pakistan' in those questions. but yeah, if it became a big time political issue and romney becomes pres, who knows. it's never good to bet against americans wanting to kill people. but I think it's possible that there might be a growing faction within the republican party that's tired of paying for foreign adventures + he just doesn't seem like he'd want to focus on foreign policy when he didn't have to. it would really be a question of 'who's running the show' at that point.

iatee, Monday, 22 October 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

I would bet the numbers would look more or less the same if you replaced 'iran' with 'pakistan' in those questions.

The numbers would look more or less the same if you replaced 'iran' with 'anyplace but England or Israel' in those questions.

Force Boxman (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 22 October 2012 02:02 (thirteen years ago)

So....it's going to be, what, an hour? Ninety minutes? Presumably we'll get some Benghazi stuff up front with a rehash of what we heard at the last debate. And some swaggering about Iran and/or Syria, similar to the VP debate with both sides insisting that they'll be "tougher" without any clarification of how, or why, or what that will do. Something about China which will just be a rehash of gibberish already given re: trade deficits, keeping good jobs at home, blah blah....

That still leaves an awful lot of airtime - what are the other "foreign policy" questions that will come up here? Is immigration a foreign policy question? The distance to Russia from Romney's house vs. Obama's? What?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 22 October 2012 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

this was posted a couple weeks ago, who knows if it's still accurate:

The topics for the third and final presidential debate, which will focus exclusively on foreign policy, were announced in Friday.

Politico's Mike Allen was the first to post the topics, which were selected by the moderator, CBS anchor Bob Schieffer. The debate will take place on Oct. 22nd at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.

The topics are:

America's role in the world Our longest war -- Afghanistan and Pakistan Red Lines -- Israel and Iran The Changing Middle East and the New Face of Terrorism (two segments) The Rise of China and Tomorrow's World

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/12/presidential-foreign-policy-debate-topics_n_1962460.html

apparently it has the same format as the first debate - 15 minute open ended segments, vague questions from an old white guy who is famous but not a very good journalist, etc

Loved listening to the perceptive cynicism of the grouchy old man decrying the debates on NPR this morning. He joked that his upcoming column on tonight's debate was already 2/3rds written, and predicted the only thing that will be newsworthy would be some accidental deviation from prep. Prolly pretty accurate.

Sullivan totally off suicide watch:

10.35 pm. After the first truly epic implosion in the first debate, Obama has clawed his way back in the following two, in my view. He has marshalled his arguments as potently as possible; he brought the themes of his candidacy together compellingly. His advantage on foreign policy will not, I think, diminish; it may well strengthen. And that is only just. After eight years of the most disastrous, misguided, immoral and a catastrophic foreign policy, Obama has brought the US back from the brink, presided over the decimation of al Qaeda, the liberation of Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, and restored America's moral standing in the world.

For Romney, he made no massive mistakes. No Gerald Ford moments. And since the momentum of this race is now his, if now faltering a little, a defeat on points on foreign policy will be an acceptable result. But this was Obama's debate; and he reminded me again of how extraordinarily lucky this country has been to have had him at the helm in this new millennium.

He's flawed; he's made mistakes; but who hasn't? If this man, in these times, with this record, against this opposition, does not deserve re-election, then I am simply at a loss for words. I have to believe the American people will see that in time.

Surprised Obama never consistently challenged him on this, using Romney's various statements from the Republican debates to point out how Romney talking about Massachusetts Dems from the past is not the same as somehow achieving valuable real bipartisanship in the US Congress. Some undecideds might buy Romney's myth

I wish Obama would confront him more directly on the "apology tour" nonsense. He did, sort of, but not specifically enough. Either "Give me a specific example of me apologizing" or "Do you think we've ever been wrong about anything?"

For perspective, a high school classmate of mine just posted this in my FB feed. This is a woman in her early 40s, a stay-at-home mom who I don't think went to college and lives in a small town outside a medium-sized city.

So I watched the whole debate this evening except the last 25 min of it....I think that is pretty good. I do have to say that I have no idea what the Hell they are all talking about...I mean I am not stupid or anything and I know what is going on in the world and all but when they start talking I get so confused.. I think that Obama sounded very convincing and he really is a good talker but....his eyes could not stay straight and he can't seem to look at that guy that was sitting in front of him (sorry I did not know his name) and that usually means when you can't look someone in the eye..you are lying or you are bullshitting!!!!!! just sayin....Now I am all for Romney this time around...and no I did not vote for Obama the last time....and I do have to say that Romney pulls me in with his words too....so on the lighter side of this I have no clue what was actually said...but they both sounded nice tonight in my opinion and there was even a couple of times that they complimented eachother....well agreed anyways. they both are good talkers which makes them well the only place to be...IN POLITICS!!!...Listen only God knows who is meant to be our leader and he will help us pick the right person. He knows what is best because I have NO CLUE!!! lol...dont be mean with your comments I am just trying to be honest here!!! lol

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

Tipsy, your classmate's comment scares the hell outta me

I asked upthread about any IQ studies on the undecideds, and the comment tipsy quoted actually confirms something I've begun to think about this odd sliver of the electorate. I actually think the issue is not so much stupidity per se, or even ignorance, but a kind of rudderlessness regarding the very criteria by which decisions are made. I feel often in the comments from the undecideds there's confusion, not in terms of facts, but in terms of what should matter in deciding whom to vote for. It's like there's no hierarchy of values. A partisan Republican, for example, could very well think that Romney is a flawed candidate - a relative lightweight in terms of actual substance - but will recognize that Romney is more likely to carry out a conservative agenda than Obama, and will be willing to "put up" with Romney's flaws. By contrast, these hard-core "undecideds" lack a sense of any overarching agenda. Everything matters equally: the candidate's fiscal policy as much as how "nice" he is during one particular debate. Because everything matters equally, they remain undecided until the very last second prior to arriving at the booth. Any new piece of information could tilt the direction of their momentary preference.

The thing that made that segment so great for me was that it seemed to arise spontaneously, so Obama didn't dwell on each line, the way he often does when he's got a prepared line. (Even though it may have in fact been prepared--someone tonight said Romney's been complaining about the declining number of warships for weeks. If so, it didn't seem rehearsed.)

I'm reshuffling two paragraphs from Alec MacGillis here, but I think this sums up last night well:

Something that's become so plain these last few months is how acutely Obama is aware of how far he's fallen short on the domestic side, not only with the economic recovery but with his whole vision for transforming politics. Whereas, for all the troubles abroad--the Syrian bloodbath, the Benghazi attack, etc.--he surely believes he's achieved real progress. And finds it galling as hell, no doubt, that this former private equity man who managed to offend England over the Olympics and is being tutored by Dan Senor, the former Bush spokesman in Baghdad, may be on the verge of taking the country back to the disastrous Bush ways...As he was hammering Romney over and over--for his anachronistic view of the world, for his "all over the map" stances on Afghanistan and so much else, for his empty talk of military buildup (equating Romney's lament about the bygone Navy to talk of "horses and bayonets")--one half expected him to suddenly stop and paraphrase another Democratic candidate's Saturday Night Live moment: "I can't believe I'm almost losing to this guy!"

So is that pretty much it now? Does it just come down to who gets out the vote in Ohio?

I mean, it's worth repeating that a lot of that precipitous drop after the first debate isn't due to much that Obama said and did as much a cessation of Romney doing things that made his campaign managers slap their heads on camera - he really is a terrible candidate, but his staff have figured out that they can improve his 'presidentiality' more than his actual job skills.

But there’s an odd twist here. The betting markets can sometimes be swung -- at least temporarily -- by single traders who post extraordinarily large trades. That appears to have happened Tuesday morning, when a single investor spent about $17,800 on Intrade and boosted Mitt Romney’s fortunes considerably. For about six minutes.

But the bigger problem was that they agreed on the essentials, which were all about foreign policy. Romney refused to tackle Obama directly on Libya (I shouted at the TV that he should, but he just wouldn’t listen) and Fast and Furious seems to have been forgotten by the GOP. In everything else, Obama has become so homicidally neoconservative and Romney so desperately peaceful that they’ve met in the middle on most issues. Both would defend Israel in the event of an attack, both want out of Afghanistan in 2014 and neither would let Iran get the bomb. If you want a real debate on foreign policy, you’re just going to have to wait until Rand Paul gets the nomination in 2020.

Karl Rove employed exactly this strategy in 2000. As we now know, the race was excruciatingly close, and Al Gore won the national vote by half a percentage point. But at the time, Bush projected a jaunty air of confidence. Rove publicly predicted Bush would win 320 electoral votes. Bush even spent the final days stumping in California, supposedly because he was so sure of victory he wanted an icing-on-the-cake win in a deep blue state. Campaign reporters generally fell for Bush’s spin, portraying him as riding the winds of momentum and likewise presenting Al Gore as desperate.

can't be repeated enough.

BBC reporting momentum toward Kerry and things getting a bit rumbly at Bush HQ.

I'm pretty sure that Kerry's ability to credit Americans with the ability to do a fraction of the research he does all the time is no stretch to anyone who has done their own bloody homework. Which is most of us, Yalies included.

pplains, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

I feel absolutely *gutted*. even though i didn't let the optimism of the amin election thread lull me into a falso sense of security, there was part of me that was sure Kerry would win. Bush has always seemed essentially inelectable to me, but he triumphed again, over decent man who ran a decent campaign, and it seemed he only employed the 'legal' dirty tricks to win (ie no grand scale voter fraud).

So is this it? Do we live in a world where a liar can scare the populace into voting for him, over a man whose policies would arguably make the world a better, safer place (at least than his opponents)? Are we stuck living in the nightmarish Pottersville of George Bailey's Christmas Eve nightmare?

Prophetic:

i jus think this talk of "seceding" from the red states; being "ashamed" etc is divisive, defeatist, and plays right into the Repubs' hands. we need to get better connected. town and country have to come together or RoveCo will continue to wedge us apart for their own electoral/financial/etc gain (as long as the math continues to work)

Hi effete elitist here, and I'm saying that the above kind of thinking is just going to get us more of the same. For too long we have expected people to be motivated by the greater good, when in fact most people are motivated by fear, greed and stupidity. I have no interested in getting “connected” with the lowest common denominator. I’m tired of being ruled by their superstition, their cheap morals and hypocrisy, and most of all their blind allegiance to a cult of personality. Plus their food sucks, their music is bad and their clothes are goofy.

My friend who has been living on edge lately has found solace in going door to door, registering people to vote, ideally for Obama. His positive mental attitude is that he'd rather get one person to vote for Obama than argue with two people who won't, so for him it really is a one-by-one election. I'm heading out with him to Iowa this weekend to give it a shot.

obv war is horrible and stuff but the very existence of aircraft carriers, and the fact that they run smoothly by and large, is at least a lil mindblowing at times

well if it isn't old 11 cameras simon (gbx), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

Out of more than 65 aircraft carriers shown, there are about 8 total that are NOT either US Navy, or else belong to NATO allies or to other firm US allies, like Australia and Japan.

the max in the high castle (kingfish), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

both carrier graphics are misleading - pplains's graphic is more complete since it includes ships currently under construction (eg. HMS Queen Elizabeth) but also some that are decommissioned (eg. USS Kitty Hawk). JF's graphic has some rotary-wing only platforms but not all of them.

infowars.go.com (los blue jeans), Thursday, 25 October 2012 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

The plain fact is that the USA and itsNATO and other allies pwn the rest of the world in aircraft carriers and neither graphic misleads one about that reality.

Aimless, Thursday, 25 October 2012 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

well yeah
