amazing that we haven't had a thread going all year AFAICT - maybe for the best. I can't seem to find the really juicy ones I expected - everyone seems either demoralized or so far into fantasy-land that none of the talking points connect. checking the usual suspects....

I live on a different planet than these people

i've grown accustomed to her face tat (m bison), Sunday, 4 November 2012 02:30 (twelve years ago)

It's been said before on one of the many past threads, but if there is a legitimate reason to look at this stuff beyond wanting to scare yourself (or feel better about yourself), it's that through cartoons you can get a really quick, shorthand glimpse into this alternate universe. No long essays to read, no links to click on, but the simple stipulation "this is intended to be funny" makes you start to realize all the kinds of crap that has to be ASSUMED AS TRUE for the rest to hang together. And indeed..it's a different planet.

"Biggest story since Watergate"

They're desperate for a smoking gun in the right-wing blogosphere aren't they? It's not enough to hate Obama's policies - he has to be guilty of corruption, impeached, imprisoned. But they keep coming up with nothing. It's like the Clinton years before Lewinsky, only more intense.

goole, Sunday, 4 November 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago)

I do appreciate that he tried ("tried") to render the actual specific NYT building, rather than like a generic skyscraper or something.

Really bugs me how many of these people not only cannot draw but just haven't made the slightest effort to improve. Day By Day has existed for a decade and still looks just as shitty. By contrast, Trudeau made huge strides in the same length of time. I guess the same gripe could apply to a lot of webcomics - something like Sluggy Freelance, which I haven't read regularly in a lonnnnng time, still basically looks like it did in 1998....but it's just a silly gag adventure/soap strip with no pretenses to be delivering THE HARD TRUTHS from a position of moral superiority so maybe I find the simple craft appealing rather than a sign of some sort of hypocrisy between talent and posturing...

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 November 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago)

bnw, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 16:25 (twelve years ago)

xxxpost No, I'll totally concede that. Just, I mean, practice usually makes some kind of difference in this stuff. Thinking also of like, the PVP or Penny Arcade artists, who have gone through a ton of experimentation and tweaking in their style over the same span of time. Actually think both got kind of over-stylized after a certain point but you at least get the sense of people trying hard to improve their techniques. Also speaking as a guy who used to draw a lot of comics purely as a hobby, fell out of it years ago but part of the satisfaction really was looking back over a few years of work and being like, shit, I used to draw like that? Not that I ever necessarily got even as "good" as DBD guy but, y'know.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago)

and that's exactly the Doonesbury book I was thinking of! Will keep my eye out for a super-cheapo copy.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 16:28 (twelve years ago)

what exactly does "celebrity in chief" mean?

frogbs, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago)

Wow, had no idea that Trudeau had collaborators. Kind of mindblown at the moment. I mean, I know that a bunch cartoonists have them -- does Mort Walker even read Beetle Bailey anymore? -- but assumed Trudeau was a one-man show.

5-Hour Enmity (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago)

According to Wiki: Doonesbury is written and pencilled by Garry Trudeau, then inked and lettered by his assistant Don Carlton.

I think there have been other assistants, too, and I wonder how 'complete' Trudeau's pencils are

By and large, most American newspaper strip artists have had assistants - producing a daily comic strip is sheer hard work! Schulz is the most famous exception to this

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 17:00 (twelve years ago)

I don't think Scott Adams gets any help. Then again Dilbert doesn't seem awfully hard to make!

frogbs, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago)

Watterson was proudly assistant-free, and took a thinly-veiled dig at Walker, something like "the assistants do all the work, and the person taking the credit is on the golf course."

5-Hour Enmity (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago)

Scott Adams started getting help for a while when he developed a weird nerve condition in his hand

So it's stupid to figure out the party by checking in with the Hispanic vote? Or is it, if the Republicans "spoke Spanish" better, they wouldn't have made this obvious elementary mistake of performing the autopsy on yourself while still alive?

I know that a lot of business associations were in favor of prohibition because workers had a tendency to show up drunk, which is anecdotal support for the truly grotesque amount of drinking people did. Also the temperance movement was largely women because of the link between drinking and domestic violence, plus men being too drunk to work and financially support their families.

took me a while to interpret this, thinking this was a cop and there was some complex statement being made about how the government is robbing cops of the power to fight back with all this non-lethal defensive stuff...but actually it's about everyday citizens "needing" all this gear to protect them from all the bullets flying around? which sounds like a good argument for gun control but i don't think it is.

Not really a "right-wing political cartoon," but close enough - this appeared in the Wall Street Journal in an article on tax changes in the "fiscal cliff" bill:

As this blogger points out, Yes, in that comic, every single one of those families makes a six figure income, the lowest being $180 thousand, and yet because of the new tax hikes imposed by Obama, they all appear as though he ran over the family dog.

The median household income in the U.S. between 2007-2011 was $52,762, but the American people are all supposed to shed tears for those that make between three to twelve times as much?

Mordy, Thursday, 14 February 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

the "it's snowing lol there's no global warming" thing makes me want to slam my head repeatedly on my desk.

obviously a lot of people intuitively understand that one in the history of the universe has ever suggested that an increase in average global temperature, whether 1 degree F or 5 or 12, would mean that it would not snow ever again. no one except for everyone's idiotic uncle, i guess.

but a lot of people don't realize that warmer temperatures, someone intuitively, create larger snow storms. From Kevin Trenberth, former head of the Climate Analysis Section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research:

Ingredients for a big snow storm include temperatures just below freezing. In the past temperatures at this time of year would have been a lot below freezing but the ability to hold moisture in the atmosphere goes down by 7% per degree C (4% per deg F), and so in the past we would have had a snow storm but not these amounts.

Z S, Thursday, 14 February 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

i used intuitively twice there, both incorrectly. first shouldn't have been there, second should have been counter-intuitively.

it's possible that my repeated slamming of my head on my desk may be impacting my braaaaaaaaainz

Z S, Thursday, 14 February 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

Yes, getting people to understand that climate change is contributing to more snow here in Cleveland because Lake Erie never froze over, therefore we get lake effect snow all the time now and well into April, is a fool's errand.

Maggie Thatcher trapped at the age of being a pile of gelatinous yet scratchy white globules, possibly a giant mushy brain or by a great stretch of the imagination a flower arrangement.

Seriously lost here. Does this take place in heaven? If so, why is Thatcher a corpse while everyone else is alive? Why is sinister droopy Ratzinger there, and still in pope costume? Why is Churchill so grumpy? Why is it noteworthy that Biden's not present? If this is taking place at the funeral on earth, why is nobody else present, or reacting to the presence of two to three ghostly world leaders? Baffling.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 18 April 2013 14:38 (twelve years ago)

clearly Thatcher went to heaven where she was then immediately ghost-murdered by the spirits of Churchill, Reagan and one of the popes that's not in hell.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 April 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

I think that the point is that she's not going to mind that either Obama or Biden appeared at her funeral because she has all these friends in heaven - though she hasn't come to see them yet because???

Maybe she's tied to her body until cremation - presumably with burial you only appear piecemeal as the worms actually eat you. Which ties in to Doctor Casino's theory - these are the bits of her brain that have already rotted over time.

I can definitely see that and I almost said something earlier. The one thing thought that doesn't 100% sell me on it being a positive cartoon is the girl asking "Who's Norman Rockwell?"

Rockwell is tied with Warhol as the most famous American painter of the last century. His name is printed on the card posted on the wall. Where the boy was asking "What's a traditional family?" because the ideas of what's traditional has changed, questioning who Norman Rockwell is slants to the whole "turning our backs on the values we used to cherish" angle.

The better question asked should not have been "What's a traditional family?" but instead "Why is that a traditional family?"

New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

nickn, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

Re-looking at the original, it seems like the "Who's Norman Rockwell" is more to inform the reader what he's looking at, since the painting is not Rockwelly enough to discern that otherwise, and the ID tag beneath it is barely legible.

nickn, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I think that's what the dialogue is there for too, to make it abundantly clear what we're looking at. Much like how our usual batshit cartoonists feel the need to label their drawing of the Capitol with "Congress". Suppose that's its own complaint.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i'm going to say a cartoon "BOOM!" sound is always a hard sell when people are dead and injured, etc. There's a great concept there to undergird a more somber and perhaps that much more damning political cartoon - but that might have also ended up ridiculously OTT, in a different way.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 28 April 2013 05:10 (twelve years ago)

Maybe instead of a Boom, we could've had another Perry OOPS.

That's some good art, I know that.

Perry demands apology for cartoon, Ohman/the Sacramento Bee won't apologize:

I'm defending this one because I think that when you have a politician traveling across the country selling a state with low regulatory capacity, that politician also has to be accountable for what happens when that lack of regulation proves to be fatal.

That's exponentially more offensive to me.

My job, as I understand it, is to be provocative. I provoke, you decide. I don't dictate, I put out my opinion along with everyone else. I sign my name. I own it. In my opinion, I could have gone further. Much further.

Well, the political point was that Perry's politics are to blame in these deaths. How is he supposed to make that point without using the deaths? And really, more than a 'political' point, it is a 'true' one.

Frederik B, Monday, 29 April 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)

"simplifying" isn't really the right word, forks

The issue as I see it is that the cartoon comments on the explosion in that manner depersonalizes the lives of the people affected by it; the point is IMO extremely valid but it's presented in a manner more interested in scoring points off of Perry than it is in remembering/honoring the people who were killed,, which is going to be problematic for people whose empathy works in that particular manner. Those whose empathy is engaged by feeling rage towards the behavior that created the environment that allowed the explosion to take place are less likely to be upset.

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Monday, 29 April 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)

it's a cartoon. the point can be made clear without drawing a rendition of a disaster where people died. it's in tremendously poor taste and unnecessary.

simplify=depersonalize, yes.

brb buying poppers w/my employee discount (forksclovetofu), Monday, 29 April 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)

"Fast and Furious" is shorthand for the ATF's bungled attempt at a gun-running sting operation, about which right-wingers remain very incensed. Presumably the idea is that if the administration is concerned about gun control they should have controlled those guns! Etc!

Confusingly, the cartoon is also set at a movie theater in a year when a Fast and the Furious movie is coming out, rendering everything a totally confusing mess even if you're able to penetrate the cartoonist's signature heavily bolded text and 0-point line spacing.

With this brilliantly executed political cartoon, Branco proved that a picture can indeed be worth a thousand words. In fact, with an artfully crafted caricature and a context that is nothing short of creative genius, Branco made a statement more powerful than my fellow authors and I have been able to make in our lengthy columns on this subject. Only the best political cartoonists are able to do this, and Branco is one of the best.

if i had to guess: all science lacks credibility and the author assumes all scientists work in the same building, together. Thus, as our very cold winter has shown us that global warming is clearly a fake concern (why, even global warming scientists like to slide down snow; clearly dubious behavior), pro-vaccination scientists look upon them with disdain as they fear a similar comeuppance... like maybe they'll just lick the face of children with mumps or something? I dunno, this is fucking complicated.

pplains, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 15:43 (ten years ago)

it says it's the top floor of the building, so the climate scientist who thinks the world is doomed is trying to commit suicide by jumping out the window only to be surprised that there is actually snow right up to the top floor (a lot of snow means that the science behind global warming is wrong).

Vaccine scientists on the other hand ... (I don't know)

silverfish, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 15:43 (ten years ago)

Obv. Global Warming scientist is ruining the credibility of SCIENCE itself by being wrong about snow, causing people to not trust the Vaccine Scientist who is warning us about a real problem. Done.

In 2006, Tinsley was arrested twice for driving while intoxicated, once in August and again in December, both Class A misdemeanors. He had a blood alcohol content of 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit.[14] [15] After the December incident, he attacked the sentencing judge, Roderick McGillivray, in several of his comics.[16] Due to his large readerbase, he was successful in influencing Judge McGillivray's defeat during that year's election.

Do political cartoonists have editors that provide feedback and approve their proofs for publication? Just wondering after looking at that dinosaur one. Was it someone's job to take a look at it and say, "Hey, this is really dumb, can you at least change it from 'nukes' and 'nuclear arms race' to whatever you imagine the jurassic equivalent to be?"

the idea that "the sjws (or even liberals generally) push an ideology of 'cultural marxism' -- they are communists without knowing that's what they are" is a really common thread on the right; fairly mainstream figures can be seen pushing the idea. in a darker mode a lot of the alt-right further believe that 'cultural marxism' is a jewish plot.

goole, Monday, 21 March 2016 21:20 (nine years ago)

the right insinuating a link between jews + marxism has been true since before the bolsheviks came to power. protocols came out during the tsar's court and the whites were all obsessed w/ it and of course fascist germany.

Mordy, Monday, 21 March 2016 21:26 (nine years ago)

true, a lot is shorthanded by the term "alt-right" (which i don't like for a number of reasons, but it's what they call themselves) -- right-wingers trying to resuscitate all the things the 20th century eventually beat out of official conservatism, like anti-semitism and overt white supremacy

this account of how 4chan took a bunch of his cartoons and doctored them to include explicitly anti-semitic/pro-nazi stuff is interesting (it's breitbart so it more or less passes over how a lot of the cartoons are pretty racist to begin with)

interesting in terms of being some kind of old-right vs alt-right sort of thing, maybe? Garrison seems fairly befuddled by 4chan. another account of the same, in comic strip form:

pplains, Sunday, 26 June 2016 18:26 (nine years ago)

yeah totally. FWIW also, from what I let myself page through, he's not totally foreign to the nu concerns and ways of the youth right, given the recurring "SJW" material in his cartoons. I'm sure if I went back far enough I'd find specifically GG-themed cartoons, but I don't really want to.

Harvey Manfrenjensenden (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 26 June 2016 18:42 (nine years ago)

well that's the interesting thing, it seems like that kind of stuff was alien to him (he's a middle aged guy who apparently didn't follow politics until the financial crash, after which he became a Ron Paul guy) but he's adapted:

After years of being tortured at the hands of the internet, there appears to be a glimmer of light on the horizon. That 4chan generation is growing up, and Garrison has become a cult figure of sorts for those who follow web culture. Indeed, that was why Breitbart Tech chose to launch with one of his cartoons on our front page.

The culturally libertarian, web culture-savvy generation have grown fond of Garrison, and in the wake of our commission, he has been receiving similar offers of work.

“I’m starting to see an expanding fan base for my “politically incorrect” cartoons. I didn’t really understand the culture war stuff, but after reading a book about SJWs written by Vox Day, my eyes are open. I’ll draw more cartoons pertaining to that subject.”

“Making a living as an independent political cartoonist is a notoriously difficult task, but it now seems possible. One collector has been buying up the majority of my original cartoons, and I can’t thank him enough.”

soref, Sunday, 26 June 2016 18:47 (nine years ago)

as the imaginary romney presidency draws near to its close, i have checked in on townhall.com for i guess the more 'mainstream' of batshit rightwing cartoons. pretty pathetic to be honest - there's a lot of swings at "the media" being in cahoots with clinton, and of course some general-purpose anti-hillary stuff. but almost no enthusiasm for trump himself. they really can't buy into him. some of that any cartoonist's fundamental instinct is going to be to caricature this guy because he's so ridiculous, but there's an affectionate way to do that and they aren't bothering. an important bellwether imho.

True fact, there was never a ban on horseshoes. We as a nation, of men, fathers of boys, simply became too weak to throw them, and so the game became impossible. Shortly thereafter, abortion was legalized.

Yeah, I was thinking about the lack of this kind of thread recently. There's a lot of background in the casual racism and sexism in gaming thread and then scattered throughout the various politics and election threads, but not necessarily a central repository to discuss the ascendancy of the deplorables.

how's life, Thursday, 6 October 2016 10:43 (eight years ago)

Isn't there already a Men's Rights thread?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 6 October 2016 10:55 (eight years ago)

Oh yeah, that too. And the racism threads.

I think the difference though it's that with their recognition in the national news media, there's serious cause for concern that they won't just crumble into cheetoh dust when the election's over and get swept beck down into their mothers' basements. Batshit has always been troublingly close to the surface, but now it's normal and accepted and out there.

Banhammers, imsgo? If you're going to invite Milo Yiannopoulos to ilx he won't be the only one getting banned.

batshit rightwing cartoon thread occasionally descends down an alt-right rabbithole - when it does I suppose it's the next closest after what became the Gamergate thread to describing a community of these fuckers.

Which is to say: Mr Gorbachev - make that thread.

brimstead, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 04:39 (eight years ago)

after spending some time on social media and among men and women who are righteously angry about "pussygate", I am making an effort to finding the balance between being less flippant and ironic about the daily horror of the front page without ending up TRENCHANT and unnecessarily didactic in that process. somehow pointing even obliquely at shit like this feels more enabling than escaping, i dunno. Help?

brimstead, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 06:22 (eight years ago)

doing some of that.
my 2 cents stays 2 cents if i keep it in my pocket so when i share it with people it's less about being instructive or incisive and more just hopeful it can turn into silk scarves or doves through the magic power of dialogue.
but i can diggit if an arched eyebrow is about all that post earned.

You believe having control of your privacy is important. You also believe Ronald Reagan was the greatest president in your lifetime - a man who honored the Constitution and the Rights expressed therein.

We agree, and that's why we started this company - to give you the privacy you deserve and the ability to share the Reagan name with every email you send.
