because he really really deserves a thread of his own.

3 clips from limmy's show s3 here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01p085w

series returns next monday - still not uk-wide, shockingly. available on iplayer though

genuinely obsessed with his stuff. that perfect mix of rough (sidestepping the bullying of frankie boyle) and touching and ridiculous

NI, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know, it's much more variable than the other Scottish comedy shows on the block - for every "Wrong way down a one way street" there's a "Lloyds pharMAcy", and I have real doubts it'll ever get to the heights of the Falconhoof "Kill Jester" again - Gary Tank Commander is solidly good, and Burnistoun (although equally prone to misfires) stomps all over it with Jolly Boy John. I'll definitely be iPlayering it though.

Did anyone else ever try following him on Twitter? SERIOUSLY something wrong with him.

I love Limmy. Lloyds Pharmacy was hilarious for me. Yes or noo, all the Adventure Calls, the amazing "will I bring another spoon" sketch. I can't even remember all the ones I like cos there are so many.

Of the new clips, I like the one with the guy in the park.

Also Benny Harvey RIP!

i followed him on twitter for a while, had to give up after not long. though i do have some kind of admiration for someone who is a professional success despite spending all day picking fights with strangers.

Perfect Chicken Forever (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 17:21 (thirteen years ago)

The Bus trip to Yoker sketch is his crowning achievement IMO. Yeah his Twitter is pretty crazed.

Remarkable how many Limmyisms are still current between me and the missus: "a child's *sweetie*, officer?", "20s *plenty*?" "youse *guys*???", "REQUIEM" etc etc

Stevie T, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

The "Yoker" clip is all time. Never seen the "touching" one upthread before (aka Millport I guess), after a robustly shit day of it, mostly due to work, this struck a chord that's resonating like a tuning fork right now. Looking fwd to the new series.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

"Yoker" is great. I have no need to follow his twitter as it's all endlessly retweeted into my stream anyway.

I managed one episode of Gary Tank Commander and thought it was excruciating.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

I quite frequently get people retweeting him in my twitter stream... and he doesn't seem very funny, to be honest.

emil.y, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

The Twitter stuff isn't really representative of his TV comedy. Though I find the repetition and bloody-mindedness of his Twitter does sort of amuse me in a way.

In general with Limmy it's not a love it or hate it thing, but I definitely have recommended him to a few friends who saw no value in his sketches whatsoever.

I also think it's really clear from a lot of the sketches that he has been a major raver at some point, I can't pinpoint this in every sketch but his humour is definitely of that brand to me.

this one is probably the best, for me, a great sketch with a completely meaningless ending that just makes it even funnier:

My dad frequently tells me how much he loves the sketch with the magic picture frame and his dad in it. Limmy's humour is at its best when it reflects that particular Scottish sense of neither being derogatory /laughing at somebody's expense nor self deprecating - just funny because it is.

Burnistoun (although equally prone to misfires) stomps all over it with Jolly Boy John.

Much as I love Burnistoun and agree that both are hit and miss, I think Limmy's highs are higher.

I once spent half an hour suppressing giggles on a train after my brother texted "d'ye want this mushroom" to me.

I've followed and unfollowed Limmy several times on twitter. He's hard work sometimes. I used to occasionally watch his webcam stuff too.

The "Nightmare" sketch had me in hysterics first time I watched it.

So many good Limmy's sketches. I bought series 1 on DVD but when it came to watching it my flatmate was just unimpressed and I had to admit that series lacked a lot of the best of his work.

Looking forward to the new series. S2 was brilliant. Easily the best British sketch show (not that there's much competition) since The Fast Show and arguably more inventive.

Each to their own, but I find it surprising that people say Limmy is hit and miss compared to Burnistoun. There are a few great Burnistoun sketches (2 Litre Bottle of Ginger, The Lift, the single issue MP, er that's about it) but it's always been seriously patchy. The latest series was piss poor; lazy writing, a lack of imagination. With stuff like Jolly Boy John it's as if they're trying to go for the weirdness of Limmy, but it totally falls flat and just comes across as the sort of 'random' wacky shit Limmy takes the piss out of so well (youtube the Limmy 'random' sketch from the pilot - one of my favourites).

i'm hands down obsessed with the guy, greatest comedian of all time for me. certainly the most *now* in tone - as in it seems a product of internet age, cf: his previous career in webdesign and rise to fame through youtube

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

never seen burniston - is it similar stuff?

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

true about his stuff bleeding into everyday conversation, i'm always referencing the 'back on top' sketch after any minor/major mishap

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH9ajekHNKM

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

agree slightly about s2 being better than the first, but i can watch both over and over, soaking it up like whale noise. can't do this with any other tv show at all ever, there's something almost songlike and rhythmic about his stuff

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

vague mutterings online about a beef between him and his older brother, saying limmy jr robbed a lot of material from his bro. apparently elder limmy did 'requiem' for real in the 80s which is kinda horrifying if still a bit amusing

worth checking him out too, his twitter stuff is mostly football rants but there are gems like this on soundcloud and youtube:
http://soundcloud.com/davidlimond/me-calling-danny-dyer

as my mate phil put it, "like limmy but just dead rough and not honed at all"

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

(warning: bit of racism in that soundcloud link)

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

and if you've not heard limmy's 'world of glasgow' podcasts then you're in for a treat. should be out there to download but if not let me know and i'll upload a zip somewhere. mental image of jacqueline mcafferty dancing to 'call on me' is forever burned onto my psyche

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:47 (thirteen years ago)

can easily imagine him not being to many peoples taste, a lot of his material is just a torrent of grim with only a sliver of a pay-off (often just him pulling a disgusted face to camera). then again there are things that make me explode like "they all just wanna RRRRIDE me"

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

disappointingly his wife did the stage layout for frankie boyle's tour. boyle just seems like a thick nasty limmy, completely missing the point, hitting way below the mark

disappointingly his wife did the stage layout for frankie boyle's tour.

No, his girlfriend did the art on the DVD cover! (x-post)

He sometimes mentions his father, who is a regional "comedy hypnotist" that performs at local pubs. He's clearly got an interesting family history. Jesus - half the press for S3 is him talking about alcoholism and suicide.

It's amazing to me (as someone who didn't grow up in the UK, so his accent is sometimes REALLY hard for me to understand, like on the Dee Dee sketches or the amazing "Get away from the motor" one) how he can also have such broadly-appealing ones. The Mr. Mulvaney sketches are incredible!!!

She Got the Shakes, Friday, 9 November 2012 07:57 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't quite finish that thought - I just mean the range of his sketches is impressive. Total surreal non-sequitor stuff all the way to something that could have been a Mr. Show bit or whatever.

Part of it is that he's a genuinely great actor, I think.

She Got the Shakes, Friday, 9 November 2012 07:58 (thirteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggEUx-wS0ms

Burnistoun is kind of the flip side of the coin to Limmy's Show - an unashamedly big, dumb, noisy sketch show. There's usually one or two decent sketches per series, and the rest is sort of "hmm". It's disappointing cos the stuff Rab Florence used to do on his old shows(eg Consolevania & Videogaiden) wasn't like that at all, I get the sense he's playing things deliberately low-brow for a more mainstream audience.

Limmy's stuff is in a different league, which is odd as initially they were coming very much from the same place, humour-wise - both very Tim & Eric influenced. Not to mention Limmy was a regular in Videogaiden as "Zak Eastman".

Pheeel, Friday, 9 November 2012 11:09 (thirteen years ago)

tom d, did you know him well? was he always funny?

Pretty well. Yes, and the humour was exactly the same, but I would never have thought he'd end up a "comedian" with his own TV show!

something so brilliant and small about the GBM past of this 'doppleganger' sketch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLlLb4n8ZtY

that brilliant thing of something minor happening that you might raise an eyebrow for a split second before forgetting and moving on, but limmy grabs it and rinses it to death

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 15:20 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know, it's much more variable than the other Scottish comedy shows on the block - for every "Wrong way down a one way street" there's a "Lloyds pharMAcy"

see, i wouldn't pick out either of those sketches as being brilliant or poor, they're just his middling stuff to me. as you can see on this thread people have their own fairly obscure skits that hit a chord with them, that's his genius

and I have real doubts it'll ever get to the heights of the Falconhoof "Kill Jester" again

super disagree. that 'guy in the park' clip from s3 preview is as good as that for me. fascinated by what he'll do next, clearly has ideas and creativity by the ton so as much as i want him to go on making sketch shows forever i think he'll move onto bigger things. he's already mentioned writing a script for a horror film/tv series - bit gutted as i've no interest in non-lol-horror

NI, Friday, 9 November 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

limmy's dad's hypnotist show looks mental: http://youtu.be/J0xX3oxa1hk

skip to second half, 3.45 onwards. watch from 3.45 onwards. bunch of people sat in a row, raging at each other while limmy's dad - who has hypnotised them into thinking he's invisible - walks past slapping and nipping and pulling their hair. goes on for 5 relentlessly unpleasant minutes. no jokes or humour, just anger and rage and pain, increasing in intensity til it looks they're gona smash each others faces in.

at one point he grabs the old lady's boobs and she think it's this scally kid who did it. grim.

i liked the guy in the electronics shop, tho by the end it wasn't so good.

think my biggest laugh was the "i've never said this to anyone before.... " one. but the dude in the park was just brilliant. reminds me of some IRL twats.

adventure call was pretty good. i liked the bit with the guy drawing the picture on the napkin too. that actor is amazing.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 13 November 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

paraside and jac mccaff good and a good mix of others I realise what I enjoy is just limmy's v funny acting plus some v funny moments and ideas than payoffs/punchlines

conrad, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

picture on napkin guy was superb. limmy's face as it went on that bit too long, turning from matey laughing to something uncomfortable, just wonderful. (though needed a few seconds shaving off the end of the sketch)

i did think that there's a small risk some of his stuff could descend into pastiche, a bit catchphrasey. (though as catchphrases go, a disgusted look to camera is up there with the best of them.) don't think he's there yet but it could go like that if he's not careful

Was a bit disturbed by the giant doors in one of the lampshade sketch scenes. Is this a Glasgow tenement thing? Made the people look like children.

Also Deedee ("fucken Alan Titchmarsh").

calumerio, Thursday, 15 November 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

Deedee's one of the greatest comedy characters of all time. It could have been handled so much worse - point and laugh at the burnout scally, but you're always on his side. I get the impression, just form the decor of his room and the people he knows that he actually used to be a pretty stable guy who just happened to have hit a serious rut.

the crane one was amazing, and then it turns out it's all a hallucination based on the fact he skinned up on a book about Glasgow landmarks.

"Bastard widnae gie us a straight answer"

studge_siren.gif (onimo), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

read this somewhere else:

"One of the funniest things I saw him do was a webcam where he was waving a big knife about, acting as if he'd snuck it into a nightclub and was threatening to stab people with it. It was both hilarious and genuinely disturbing."

would love to see that

NI, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

on the webcam one night he pretended to masturbate to savage's "don't cry tonight" for the duration. while softly groaning "don't let me gooo", "don't cry tonight" and sobbing heavily. he kept restarting it, went on for about 20 minutes.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

don't think this has been linked on here yet, another of my alltime favourite sketches:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD8qjOjBk-8

similar to napkin one in tone - daft music, expressions, unpleasant payoff. probably my favourite style of the sketches he does (slapstick stuff, influenced by keaton/chaplin?)

NI, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

xp, ha his webcam stuff was intense. sometimes hilarious, sometimes uncomfortable. always with a great soundtrack though - endlessly pleased that the greatest comic mind of our generation is all about synths and gay club dance music and not lumpen indie

NI, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

You do realise, like 'hing', a lot of this stuff is just Glaswegian?

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 13:22 (thirteen years ago)

great ep

conrad, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

it is quite funny how you're often not sure when a sketch begins whether it is a new one or a continuation of an earlier one because it's usually the same people usually looking pretty much the same

it is quite funny I realised watching this ep but in eps back to the first series that he often uses liminal spaces for the outdoor sketches or maybe that isn't quite funny

conrad, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

The magic door on the waste ground was perfect.

calumerio, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

PARTY
CHAT

Almost too close for comfort that one.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Great episode. My wife pretty much hates it and was on laptop throughout, so I remarked that watching Limmy's Show might have to become my 'hing'; her considered response "Good, at least you'll do it when I'm not around then". Played right into her hands, etc.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

NI, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

ha, my gf hates limmy too. showed her a couple of my favourite limmy clips the other day while sat there stony-faced and disgusted. "i don't get it, i honestly don't see what's funny about it all"

NI, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

got a package in post the other day, come running upstairs dead excited like a kid at christmas. she looks at me and goes "what's that?" i open it and pull out this: http://cdn-2.cinemaparadiso.co.uk/110415085005_l.jpg

NI, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

still laughing now at the noise she made, like when you think you've stepped in dogshit and you check bottom of your shoe and find out it's true

NI, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

it's often the little details that make it so good, imo: the "enchanted forest" type music that comes in as various men describe their 'hing' delighted me almost as much as the premise itself.

Mrs A has shown v occasional amusement at some of his work (Yoker, the "two spoons" dessert sketch), but mostly tolerates it at best. Nothing worse than sitting there unimpressed whilst yr husband/lifepartner/other is braying with misplaced laughter across the room though, I imagine.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

the series 1 dvd comes HIGHLY recommended btw. each episode has video commentaries explaining each sketch, motivations, little details, etc. fascinating stuff. (dunno if ilx has a beef with cookdandbombd or what, but i ordered it via the amazon link on the top of the forum page to give the guy a few pennies, neighbourly like)

NI, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

right, that's Wishlisted for christmas then. Spread a little festive cheer and good humour for 50% of the household at least.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it's the details and limmy's mannerisms that make it. the larry forsyth thing is kinda just a one-joke premise but limmy's performance had me in stitches, the way he sneaked that "stop larrying me" line in there. so realistic, like a genuine aggro drunk

NI, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

credit due to the supporting cast too. tall skinny guy is terrifyingly funny and i almost wet myself when other guy said about (SPOILER) spending all weekend in that wardrobe laughing his head off. so much better than the 3 from s1 it's untrue

the s2 dvd with more of the same coming out in a few weeks too!

Yes but I lived in Glasgow for a while.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

i really like the younger guy. he's really good at that "whit ye talkin aboot?"/"couldn't give a fuck" kind of shrug or brush-off thing that's required in a lot of limmy's sketches. like the sketch this week with him pouring the big head on the pint followed by limmy's rant about a guy at a foam party which escalated when the guy wouldn't look at him doing the impression. brilliant sketch. "whit's yer hing?" and the chest-touching sketches were great too. it's not all gold though - that PARASIDE sketch is crap as was the scratch-card thing.

jed_, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah Paraside is pretty weak. Started watching this with flatmate, after Paraside and PARTY CHAT she said "ok I'm going to do the washing up". Not the best start to the show then but I was pissing myself through all of Larry Forsyth's Experiments.

ledge, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 09:16 (thirteen years ago)

i quite liked paraside. scratch card was shit though, i agree. the script in the corner shop "whit's yer hing" is so perfect. "i tell the wife i'm stocktaking..." followed by the conspiratorial "but you're not"

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:01 (thirteen years ago)

"Stop Larrying me!" and "something beginning with allpaper" had me in tears. Loads of meh scattered elsewhere though.

studge_siren.gif (onimo), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

The "reaction" sketch tied it all together (perfect deployment of the yelled "fanny" n'all), specifically justifying the scratch card sketch where the subverted expectation was resubverted by it having exactly the punchline you would expect have expected it to, had it not been a Limmy sketch.

Loved the fact that PARTY CHAT guy was always in the process of skinning up, even though it felt like the whole thing took place over a couple of hours.

Ain't Too Proud To Neg (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 25 November 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

can't imagine falconhoof making it to a spin-off. i'd say jacqueline mcafferty is most likely but my, and most people's, fave would be dee dee. huge undertaking though - he's hugely skilled at the under-3-min sketch but to stretch this out to a 30 min episode x 6, i dunno. fascinated by what he'll do next. can see him attempting a bunch of different stuff, charlie brooker style.

Ep 3 particularly dark, even more references to mental illness than usual.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 11:49 (thirteen years ago)

nah, it's a sketch show. You can pretty much pick it up whenever

Number None, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

I think that might have been my favourite episode overall. It was particularly bleak, even by the show's usual standards, but there was a thrilling kind of tightness to it; it felt like the themes were in even sharper relief than normal.

And Falconhoof. Poor, poor Falconhoof.

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

series 1 dvd comes HIGHLY recommended

My sister got me it for Christmas, but I did actually see an episode on my last trip to Scotland so it wasn't quite my introduction. Have only watched the 1st DVD but... Googoogagas: Modus Operandi? Looks like I might have to stop my (occasional) Bobby Gillespie skits on ILM in case people think I'm ripping Limmy off :( Dee Dee is an instant classic, the Finnieston Cran + the kitchen. And that sketch about the evil wee ned annoying the guy in the park is so accurate on evil wee neds, down to saying "Yas" instead of "Yes", *steps down to pick up a conker* "Gies that"...

https://vimeo.com/66155376#t=2206 the bit about working in an office and the guy next to him singing the words to the julian casablancas track under his breath, then breaking off to say "can you just put this on the server mate".

also the part where he's listening to skrillex then cuts back to that terrible terrible intro to the panda bear track. doing this relentlessly for ages.

both tracks are kinda crappy but limmy puts a magnifying glass right up to it, for 10/10 lols

NI, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 01:06 (twelve years ago)

NI, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 01:11 (twelve years ago)

The Caitlin Moran stuff is hilarious. I would like to see more of him v chattering classes idiots.

curses, i had vowed never to listen to the dp lp ever ever but a limmy liveblog is temptation itself

r|t|c, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 09:11 (twelve years ago)

not sure i want to engage with his music views, he likes funk d'void and other shitty scottish techno.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 09:12 (twelve years ago)

Never engaged with this dude before but seriously the longer the Daft Punk hate goes on the funnier it is.

He's right about the Peter Paphides piece being astonishingly patronising btw.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 09:16 (twelve years ago)

He's done way funnier stuff than the specific Daft Punk stuff - it's not even cos I disagree with him on the record, it's just not his best work. The Caitlin Moran fallout and the Paphides stuff is brilliant though. Esp the photos of him in the park.

Her tweet about "if he keeps slagging off my man, he'll be pissing through a straw" was incredibly embarrassing.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 09:23 (twelve years ago)

imo all paphides pieces make complete sense once u realise he is the spit of gale from breaking bad

r|t|c, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 09:32 (twelve years ago)

Her tweet about "if he keeps slagging off my man, he'll be pissing through a straw" was incredibly embarrassing.

It was so bizarre. All the more because he genuinenly did not slag off her hubby, not in a nasty way, but was more concerned about the DP opinion. Moran picked the wrong person to mess with, rookie mistake.

not sure i want to engage with his music views, he likes funk d'void and other shitty scottish techno.

gona disagree. he also likes pet shop boys, shannon, shit loads of early 80s disco and a ton of early house. i've always thought and been pleased by the fact he has vastly better music taste than pretty much any other uk comedian out there. (saw david baddiel tweet the singer of starsailor the other day saying he was a huge fan)

NI, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

the caitlin thing is car-crash interesting. i like her, and paphides writing, but her response to limmy was a real head-in-hands nooo moment

and yeah limmy was totally right to point out how condescending that PP article is: 'oh, the little people simply haven't heard it under the right circumstances' (though his early vinyl release idea does have something about it). i can't think of any circumstances where i'd listen to 'touch' or the panda bear track and think 'ahhh, of course!' shite's shite

NI, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

calling his daft punk patter an embarrassing obsession misses the point. seems to me he's pushing it as far as he can go, like matt dc said, the longer and more extreme he gets, the funnier it is. i doubt he lies awake at night legit fuming about it, it's just schtick

NI, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

the longer and more extreme he gets, the funnier it is

I mean yeah, this is what he does

isn't pete paphides from 6music? working for that station you could understand how he assumed music fans are myopic.

touch is awesome btw!

i dunno, i just didn't find the repetition funny in this case, he has done plenty of far funnier things. plus as well as being schtick there's an actual opinion in there and opinions aren't funny.

the one where he's pushing his kid in the buggy, spots the bottle of frosty jack then walks away from it bellowing. that one's amazing. almost sounds like he's taking the piss out of his son as in the first clip you can hear his son chattering on going "blehh blehh" then the final scene is limmy running away yelling BLEEHHHH BLEHHHH

I think Phil is my favourite WoG character - the mock-English accent captures perfectly a kind of strained, bullshitting search for pleasure and status. NI, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

I haven't been able to see what he's been tweeting since he blocked me for no reason a few months ago. It's partially a relief as he's one of those that seems to sit all day every day on Twitter and tweets constantly. Some of his tweets are brilliant but when he gets on a roll about being obnoxious about something it can be tedious having to scroll through it all.

hewing to the status quo with great zealotry (DavidM), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

he deleted all his tweets a few days ago too. annoying for a signed-up fanboy like me who hangs on his every word - means i missed his gta stuff, what was he saying? been a few things over the past few months where i thought 'hmm you've not really thought that through' but mostly im in agreement with him - or if not agreement, can see what he means but shy away because it's just too dark/cynical

NI, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

ha wonder why he blocked you? i do kinda buzz off that, how he's so brutal and harsh with his blockings. did you tweet anything at him? the 'getting on a roll about being obnoxious about something' is a real line in the sand for a lot of people it seems, i usually enjoy the relentlessness of it. ie. tweeting every couple of days about get lucky being the sound of the summer never fails to bring a mini-lol

NI, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

i enjoy his twitter, he obviously uses it excessively, but that's because he's a tv writer/performer who has a young kid , no friends, and mental health issues and spends most of his time at home fannying about on the computer. also because he is a bit of a self-confessed bam-up merchant/troll.

his vine has definitely gone downhill quite a bit, but it would have been difficult for him to keep up the early quality.

he's said recently how he's busy working on stuff til the end of the year but no clue as to what it is other than a vague mention of a sitcom. be interesting to see if he can pull it off - he's so skilled at the short intense blast, wonder if he can stretch it out to 6 x 30 mins. also if he'll be using dee dee, jacqueline etc, if he's playing most the parts himself - would actually prefer this for the sheer fuckedupness, no one else in the entire show except limmy dressed and made up in various ways

nah, he often rejigs early ideas (as do many writers/comedians/creative types, right?), and the density of ideas in his vines suggests that he's still 'got it'. he was saying a few days ago how he'd love to remake the benjamin skits from his world of glasgow but no tv person would fund the creation something so vicious.

remember thinking 'hm bit weak' about the first ep of s1 and s3 but subsequent viewings shows on a par with the rest, all part of a piece. falconhoof was good in this and the mr mulvaney is A+.

NI, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 21:37 (eleven years ago)

think he struggles with a theme, the "live" episode he did also fell a bit flat.also when he gets sentimental it can be a bit cloying.

really curious as to what he's going to do next. fingers crossed for a weird limmy sitcom.

http://www.comedy.co.uk/shop/limmy_daft_wee_stories_comedy_book/

Scottish comedian Limmy is working on a comedy book.

The writer and actor, real name Brian Limond, first came to prominence via his online blogs and videos. He has since gone on to create three series of the award-winning BBC Scotland sketch format Limmy's Show! and recently contributed filmed inserts for Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe.

Limond is now working on Daft Wee Stories, which is being described by publishers as a "inventive and funny" book.

Daft Wee Stories will feature a mix of "stories, thoughts, musings and anecdotes" from the comedian. The publication will present readers with a mix of short and long stories, with "stupid ones next to thoughtful ones, some written in the first person, some in the third person, some with illustrations, and some the size of a tweet sitting in the centre of the page".

Jack Fogg from publishers Century says: "Limmy has one of the most original, thoughtful and brilliant comic minds I've encountered. He can flip from side-splittingly funny to genuinely profound in the space of a paragraph. I'm sure that with Daft Wee Stories we're seeing the start of what will become a very exciting and unique writing career."

Daft Wee Stories will be published in hardback in July 2015, and as a paperback in 2016.

Last month Brian Limond spoke to GQ Magazine about fighting depression

The below behind-the-scenes video from Limmy's Show! sees the star talking about Falconhoof, one of his popular characters:

At the time of writing, Daft Wee Stories is not yet available to pre-order.

I'd always assumed that Limmy's work was a big outlet for his madness and that day to day he'd be quite diffident and socially anxious, but on his book readings he's just been affably commanding the attention of hundreds of people like an old school game show host, so naturally funny and at ease the whole time

Is the book any good? The deadpan bombshell he dropped in the middle of the second story he read last night had people next to me doubled over crying with laughter for minutes afterwards

The Tony Hart Land (Tom D.), Saturday, 8 August 2015 14:17 (ten years ago)

I downloaded the audiobook, it's good. No doubling over for me yet but I've drawn glances with the occasional snort-laugh. It's exactly as it says, daft wee stories, often grotesque, often with ironic punchlines you can spot a mile off, lots of great one-liners. Not earth-shattering but it's lovely to hear him read, he's a rare storyteller

what was his answer to "do you think you deserve to be world famous?"? saw him in manchester, was amazing but then again i'm a signed-up ultrafanboy. kinda wish someone would ask him about his estranged ex-con brother's claims that he came up with most of limmy's material, but don't know if that'd be going too far. he has been v candid in the q&as though, talking about how 'eckied dad' is so funny because of the line 'i'll be with you soon hen', as his mother is dead.

NI, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 03:03 (ten years ago)

started rewatching limmy's show s3 in advance and was shocked by how poor episode 1 is, esp the first half. fairly sure it picks up as the series goes on, but there are some dismal dismal sketches in that one

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 12 August 2015 16:27 (ten years ago)

Whatever the truth about him using his brother's ideas, I find a lot of his brother's own videos/audio unpleasant. Especially interviewing that crying woman on the street, unless it wasn't his brother.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 17:20 (ten years ago)

S3 ends really, really strongly iirc

imago, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 17:27 (ten years ago)

xp. his brother is a bitter, bigoted (jailed for racist abuse of a journalist online), unfunny arsehole. clearly a fantasist. the idea that limmy stole anything from him is absurd, as evidenced by a) how incredibly unfunny his brother is and b) the sheer length and breadth of original, funny content limmy has created over the last decade or so.

corbyn's gallus (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 12 August 2015 17:31 (ten years ago)

like his twitter bio used to bemoan the fact that limmy had stolen his name, ignoring the fact that it's incredibly common in the west of scotland for brothers to have the same surname-based nickname at school.

corbyn's gallus (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 12 August 2015 17:33 (ten years ago)

limmy a wee bit of a hard-sell for north americans wi his accent and aw, ive managed to get a couple of people into his stuff though.

the first series of limmy's show doesn't hold up that well, he's said himself it seems a little slow-paced. subsequent series he makes more cuts, sketches are a bit more kinetic.

well annoying it's not on youtube. i've got sky so i could've recorded it too.

anyone go to the limmy live shows last month? bunch of us went up from manchester. verdict: flawed but good, only really for full throttle limmy fans. bit panto in parts, lot of bits fell flat, lot of bits belly-achingly funny. can kinda see that he's not a great live performer but gets by on charm and skill of supporting cast. fair few old sketches rehashed to work live, often falling a bit flat. v expensive for what it was but hey, who'd begrudge him that. pretty sure he's touring the rest of the uk later this year - if you're a fan, go, but don't take people expecting it to convert them. i dunno if i'd spend another 30 odd quid on the manchester gig but i'd like to see how he's developed it. he's known for being meticulous and there's a fair amount of flab that could be trimmed

I'd almost prefer Patreon as there's a chance of more stuff coming out. Hard to say that Limmy would benefit from a BBC editor as his stuff varies so much, one man's £5 note trick is another man's Yoker, high chance of obtuse gold getting culled. I'd rather have 6 hours of Patreon videos, with a 50/50 hit rate, than 3 hours on BBC with 80/20.

this is really something. it feels like a window into genuine mental illness and into thinking about your own mental state. i'm glad there aren't six episodes of this. it was very overwhelming/depressing.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 6 April 2018 00:59 (seven years ago)

the depressing element of it seemed greater than the comic element of it.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 6 April 2018 01:00 (seven years ago)

His best stuff yet I reckon.

Amazing how he was the only person in it, all filmed himself round his house and local park, but it felt so rich and layered. So much more intense than his sketch show stuff, largely because it was all him, not having to reign it in or dilute it at all, no (or v few) clunky punchlines. Credit to the BBC that they'd put out something like that, but minus credit that it's online-only.

I didn't find it depressing though, more like he's pushing things further than most, saying unsayable, etc. Your mileage etc etc though.

NI, Friday, 6 April 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

Loved it. Agree with how intense it felt, very well crafted.

Currently don't own a computer and live in Canada so fuck knows when I'll get to see this. Murder.

Xpost to NI : it was shown on tv, on BBC 1 Scotland. Just not UK-wide.

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Saturday, 7 April 2018 04:44 (seven years ago)

Also loved this, seems like it's surely cost effective enough for the BBC to pay for more. Didn't find it anymore depressing than Limmy's Show or the Vines though. The mental illness has always been there, like the Millport sketch is just brutal.

devvvine, Saturday, 7 April 2018 10:43 (seven years ago)

I watched it on youtube last night. A search there currently turns up the full episode (uploaded by Darren Rigby-O'Neill) for those without BBC access, though I guess it may get taken down before too long.

With this and Limmy saying he was drifting away from the comedic approach, I wasn't expecting to laugh so much. This is as funny as he's ever been, I was laughing at this more than any comedy show since... maybe since Limmy's Show? I'm sad there's only one episode.

Did anyone else search for this on iplayer and find his Funny Valentines short video? That's good too. It's about a guy making a dating profile advert, who has no clue how fucked up he is.

cheers for the link, krakow. got it watched last night, thought it was cracking, not sure it will be commissioned for a series as it seems a little darker and even more sui generis than his earlier tv stuff. limmy tweeted that he will make a series whether it is commissioned or not, id imagine he'll probably going down the patreon route if it isn't

ogmor, Saturday, 16 June 2018 19:54 (seven years ago)

four months pass...

Been listening to the That's Your Lot audiobook lately and it's a LOT better than DWS, although that wasn't bad by any means. He seems to have nailed the craft of story-telling a lot better, less of the ta-da! punchlines or over-extended endings of DWS. Plus the final Benidorm story is fantastic - a total throwback to his World Of Glasgow podcasts but with all the skills he's learned and honed in the years since. Few duffs in there, particularly in the final third, but overall a lot better than I expected.

Two stories really stuck with me, for totally different reasons. New Life is this brilliantly understated, non-grim, non-shock, genuinely moving short story, which ends in the exact right place for ultimate spine-tingling effect. Getting a shudder thinking about it now, in a perfect world, where Limmy got his own series of Black Mirror, this would be his San Junipero.

And Moustache, which is classic dark Limmy, but it's a tone I've never come across anywhere, no other comedian, no writer. Totally unique, and again, stuck with me long after reading, but for nastier laugh-out-loud reasons.

(xp) Pretty much, that's was the desired effect I think.

Lammy's Show (Tom D.), Monday, 18 March 2019 18:01 (six years ago)

Turns out that Limmy was asked to star in Bandersnatch as the more experienced developer who leapt off the balcony after taking acid. But he turned it down as it clashed with the Bristol tour date.

Crazy that he turned it down - Black Mirror is a worldwide phenomenon and could have exposed him to a massive new audience and new acting roles. I mean, massive respect for not letting down his Bristol fans but he could have rescheduled that date, surely?

NI, Monday, 25 March 2019 18:48 (six years ago)

that's wild.

although i would say that he's never going to become a worldwide draw due to his accent and he probably wouldn't fancy a big acting career as he's a huge homebody

Haha! It's the way his smile drops at the end but he keeps baring his teeth, all manic. Absolute master of those tiny subtle moments like that

Similarly, at his Manchester show the other night he was talking about his penultimate pill in Ibiza, aged 35, stood in the middle of the dancefloor going YESSS, the other, younger clubbers backing away. Acting out their fears about him lashing out wildly with huge sweeping punches then gripping someone in a headlock leering down on them going ME AND YOU ALL NIGHT SON, ALL FUCKING NIGHT, eyes bulging, same terrifying grimace. Hands down one of the funniest things I've ever seen

NI, Monday, 25 March 2019 21:20 (six years ago)

I was trying to think what he'd do next. Hopefully more tv like his homemade show or vines, probably for Sky, or maybe ch4. I haven't delved into his twitch much, some of the improv stuff falls flat for me, same with the gaming, doesn't reach the heights of his earlier webcam party shows, but I hope he returns to that in some form. Having said that, apparently he earns decent money just from donations on twitch, like some kind of through the looking glass YouTuber, and he's said he loves doing that more than anything at the moment

His autobiography ends on a weirdly dark note, makes the reader hark back to the uncomfortable implication of the title. Whole book is full of astonishingly candid stories, like how not long before finishing the book he was on the verge of leaving Lynn, looking for a new flat. Brutally honest, but not in the usual way that term is used, in a smaller, more intense way

NI, Monday, 25 March 2019 21:27 (six years ago)

i don't envisage him doing more tv as it seems he can't get a series on the BBC. sitcom ideas patched by execs without even getting to do a pilot or anything, and then the homemade show commissioned but just a one off, no series commissioned. just can't be commercially successful to the extent of making it worth the BBC's while, which is a crying shame.

he twitch streams a lot. he goes on about how that's what he wants to do from then on quite often. he also occasionally mentions writing, what i assume is another book. think this will be him for a while

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 25 March 2019 21:42 (six years ago)

He doesnt seem like an arsehole to me. In the autobio he talks about not really having friends in primary school, and how his mother never told him that she loved him or cuddled him or anything (and obviously same with his da) and he is completely disinterested and unmoved when she suddenly gets ill and dies when hes in his late teens. He also just generally has difficulties forming relationships with people and is a fairly, to his own admission, bad father (though his love for his son is about the only strong emotion towards a person that he seems to have).

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 27 October 2019 07:10 (six years ago)

I mean that sounds like a bit of an arsehole? But he talks about feeling like he has something missing, that's kind of more the vibe.

He's certainly not an arsehole ime, though I knew when he had nothing - well, not much anyway. Not a saint either and not as out there as he likes to portray, he functioned pretty well

He's very intelligent and talented and I'm trying not to do the "There's a lot of funny people in Glasgow" bit, but he is a very Glasgow/ West of Scotland kind of guy.

Michael Oliver of Penge Wins £5 (Tom D.), Sunday, 27 October 2019 09:50 (six years ago)

was gonna say, this

how his mother never told him that she loved him or cuddled him or anything (and obviously same with his da) and he is completely disinterested and unmoved when she suddenly gets ill and dies when hes in his late teens. He also just generally has difficulties forming relationships with people and is a fairly, to his own admission, bad father

is very typical West of Scotland stuff

Making the first episode of this the episode that was already on was a terrible idea. I get it (sort of) but just list it as a repeat of the pilot, followed by a new series if, in fact, it is a new series.

kinder, Friday, 24 April 2020 20:25 (five years ago)

This series plays out like a terrible anxiety dream to me and a pretty good example of why you need to work with other people to make a TV show. The other players on his previous shows were so good and necessary. The effect here is so suffocating it makes me hyperventilate to even watch it. I'm a fan but I'd say this is about 10% funny and about 60% horrifying and about 30% thankfully, helpfully, "don't care".

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 02:05 (five years ago)

If you think it's good then that's great, of course, it's just extremely not for me and definitely did not help me out rn. I had to stop the 3rd episode.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 02:22 (five years ago)

I liked the way that some of the bits eventually pay off into something like a conventional punchline and some of them just leave you hanging. I agree about the anxiety dream thing, it's easy to imagine a sketch like the one with the guy's mate not liking the film he recommended being done with the shorter guy from Limmy's Show as the mate, but it feels so much more claustrophobic without them

soref, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 07:02 (five years ago)

It does feel weirdly appropriate for the moment, that claustrophobia, though. Lot of people rattling about alone indoors with their thoughts rn. Watched e3 last night and had tears running down my face.

stet, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 08:45 (five years ago)

Frankly I think Limmy's enough of a good weirdo that I could imagine him doing this show even w/o quarantine, so it's not been too bad on that front for me.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 11:00 (five years ago)

it was purely coincidental that this came out now, it was all conceived, commissioned, filmed and scheduled before COVID.

kinder, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 17:09 (five years ago)

gosh why am I not surprised that Lloyd Cole is a tedious and snobbish fucking bell end

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 09:09 (four years ago)

Why on earth would you read an autobiography by someone you've never heard of before?
Why would you read a book by a comic if you don't understand humour?
Or empathy for that matter?

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:12 (four years ago)

it's a shitty program (lol, that I frequently listen to!) that wasn't ever likely to be warm towards a Limmy biog. But they seem to be questioning the validity of an oik like that even writing one.

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:21 (four years ago)

I imagine he was given the book to review? The funniest thing was fat wanker Cole mentioning that he learned Flash too nyah-nyah-nyah, what a tool.

Wouldn't disgrace a Michael Jackson (Tom D.), Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:32 (four years ago)

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:33 (four years ago)

below in the comments someone is quoting Jerry Sadowitz: "I used to hate Bryan Ferry until I discovered Lloyd Cole"

calzino, Saturday, 31 July 2021 12:45 (four years ago)

The perception of Limmy's book I'd picked up elsewhere is that he does come across as a vaguely disquieting empathy void and his partner is quite long-suffering, but those lot come across as such raging wankers on that bit

Haha, I don‘t get it, but my brother often does when he is working.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 17:33 (two years ago)

Shit on the internet so much, but I could watch him watching old UK variety and game shows for 420 hours.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:05 (two years ago)

* not so much

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:05 (two years ago)

I can watch his stream for ages but it's an on-in-the-background sort of thing usually. There is a yt channel which compiles short (like 1-2 minutes or less) clips too.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:14 (two years ago)

I enjoy sticking on the old TV 'analysis' or some of the video games he plays for twenty minutes here and there, but there does seem to be a lot of people who hunker down for a focused four-hour stream, which yeah is behaviour that's very alien to me.

lazy rascals, spending their substance, and more, in riotous living (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 5 January 2023 11:27 (two years ago)

I pretty much watch any time it’s on if I’m not in the office, can’t get enough tbh

Yeah, I put it on in the background sometimes. Like NPR but y’know Limmy playing Rust instead of Here and Now.

Realize he has lots of unresolved challenges but anyway, he has wasted his talents.

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:21 (two years ago)

Limmy's Show = "The Stone Roses"
Handmade Show & books = Second Coming
Social media stuff = The Seahorses
"Stream me playing Animal Crossing" = Ian Brown's anti-lockdown song

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:28 (two years ago)

Idk, some of his social media stuff is arguably the pinnacle. Those Vines!

imago, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:33 (two years ago)

Imo he is best when working with straight actors which gives a reasonable context to his whole thing.

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:36 (two years ago)

He had the promise of a young Steve Martin or Rowan Atkinson. Someone who is just naturally funny with unique body language to express it. He could be making movies by now instead of retreating into a corner.

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:45 (two years ago)

he was unhappy with the pressure of making TV shows, he's much happier doing this

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:48 (two years ago)

i love that he’s stretching the boundaries of comedy, so glad that he’s embracing streaming and new tech.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 7 January 2023 19:57 (two years ago)

That is a very crowded field and he is a very minor participant. He is making a living perhaps but where's the evidence that he is happy?

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 20:03 (two years ago)

As long as he's happy and making a living out of whatever he's doing then that's a good thing. I don't think we really need a Glaswegian Mr. Bean tbh.

Aw naw, no' an Antonioni wan oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Saturday, 7 January 2023 20:06 (two years ago)

His autobiography had barely a moment of happiness in it.

everything, Saturday, 7 January 2023 20:06 (two years ago)

i mean, he says so, but if you watch the stream or just the clips channel you'll see how he's in a better place than a few years ago

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 7 January 2023 20:07 (two years ago)

(xp) That's just who he is. Let's just say as happy as can be expected.

Aw naw, no' an Antonioni wan oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Saturday, 7 January 2023 20:07 (two years ago)

I suppose there might've been a world where he could've gotten famous enough to make auteurist films, but really "he could be making movies" just makes me think of a scenario where he gets wasted in bit parts in Hollywood comedies, so I'll take the streams

Daniel_Rf, Saturday, 7 January 2023 20:54 (two years ago)

He would probably agree with you. His book has a strong vien of a particularly Scottish fear of failure and ridicule. Keep your expectations limited and know your place!

mick gagger (diamonddave85), Monday, 12 May 2025 02:52 (seven months ago)

I love his sketches but listening to his autobiography audiobook it sounds like someone with an amazing imagination, an urge to have fun and create things, but also finds the pressures of working in the public domain, and delivering to expectation extremely tough to deal with. It's not something that gets discussed enough about creative people I guess: We often just assume that creative minds are also extroverted minds, possibly because those are the ones that find it easiest to succeed
