set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 November 2013 04:36 (twelve years ago)

these guys are both funny and this show has some inspired stuff occasionally but man…they can peddle some hacky shit, this season especially. i mean bits about people who keep pressing the elevator button and women-who can understand them! jokes, come on comedy pros. and the fuckin jokes about sports…plus they have this super eager to please musical theatre major vibe that makes the pandering to the coveted bro-y Men's Health subscriber demo especially unpalatable to me. like they don't really dig that material but hey we have ad time to sell, times are tough. i mean in the last episode i watched that sketch with the gay guy, the feminist, and the black power guy being constantly offended by the befuddled white guy was like some shit that rush limbaugh would write for the 1/2 hour news hour.
also the gay panic/it's funny that these dudes are saying gay things sketches have started to feel really lol ew gross gays homophobic to me. comforting the comfortable. i dunno, it's a fine line when you traffic in dick jokes.

slam dunk, Monday, 25 November 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

yeah, show is really funny sometimes, but it's really buckling under the strain of 15 hours of scripted television in which 2 guys explore the same handful of topics/premises over and over

some dude, Monday, 25 November 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)

it's been a much weaker season this go round as they've been fighting to figure out how to turn characters into franchises, yes.

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 25 November 2013 17:48 (twelve years ago)

pretty much every sketch they've done about sports has been great. the one about excessive celebration was hilarious. they just nail so many of the little things which helps when most of your sketches only have one or two central jokes.

frogbs, Monday, 25 November 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

the over-celebration one was really good

deX! (DJP), Monday, 25 November 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)

This season has been pretty good so far. Some of the really far out or bizarre sketches are incredible. The ending twist on the "Cat Poster" was one of those "holy shit, this is brilliant" moments that so few sketch comedy shows have these days

frogbs, Monday, 25 November 2013 19:28 (twelve years ago)

it put a nice bow on the whole thing but i'd hardly call it a brilliant twist

some dude, Monday, 25 November 2013 19:28 (twelve years ago)

i just wish they hadn't flashed back through earlier parts of the sketch to drive the joke home. i just thought it was brilliant because it was one of those sort of reversal-of-fortune twist endings that happens to make no sense whatsoever

frogbs, Monday, 25 November 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)

the cat poster sketch was one of the ones that made me think 'damn they're really running on fumes here' like one of them had this idea for a usual suspects skit that they've had in a notebook since 1996 and madtv never went for it and its like finally the ball is in my court, comedy world

Nhex, Monday, 16 December 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)

the ending of the skit above where flamboyant gay man says "oh i'm not persecuted, I'm just an asshole" and then exaggeratedly licks a massive candy schlong is not particularly defensible

Strangers look on with a discernible, barely contained ‘wow’. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 December 2013 19:57 (twelve years ago)

I'm on board with these guys in general but there is something a little off, like they rely too heavily on certain tropes/approaches in a way that seems basically conservative - a midway point between Mr. Show and Dave Chapelle without ever going quite as far as either.

where did these guys come from? were they doing their own individual things (standup, improv etc) prior to this? they seem to have come out of nowhere

every episode so far has had one sketch that I absolutely love but I can definitely agree with this. lately it seems like a lot of these sketches are just vehicles for odd one-liners.

frogbs, Thursday, 19 December 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

The best skit show going (damning with faint praise I know). I like it better than Chapelle's Show (which had a lot of weak bits,) way better than "Whitest Kids" and miles better than those new dudes Bob Odenkirk sponsors. They can get just as weird as Tim & Eric and their acolytes but with the added benefit of actually being funny.

All kinds of heinous things, Thursday, 19 December 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

agreed

Nhex, Thursday, 19 December 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

yeah I find it funny that a lot of the online ads for it emphasize "hey, this is on TV, you don't have to just watch it on Youtube", even though it really is the perfect show for Youtube viewing, since a lot of these sketches are well worth watching multiple times and I don't think they've done an episode of all good ones yet (in my opinion of course)

frogbs, Thursday, 19 December 2013 17:39 (twelve years ago)

they're probably getting a minuscule amount of money from YouTube ads... but this is honestly one of the few sketch shows out there that has a > 50% hit rate on their half hours, for the most part, difficult enough task as it is

Nhex, Thursday, 19 December 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

kinda reminds me of Big Train (at least the first season), which was 25% absolutely hilarious, 50% interesting (if not laugh-out-loud funny), and 25% total dud

where K&P excel is that even if you don't really like the joke, there's something else to appreciate. the one where they're two jazz musicians constantly trying to one-up each other (or the funk band that was just spouting nonsense about garbage and food) weren't necessarily all that funny to me but they were shot and acted out so well that I really enjoyed them anyway.

props of course to these dudes but i wonder how much of this is due to being able to do pre-recorded segments with production standards that would've been insanely cost-prohibitive even five years ago. say what you will about the lonely island dudes, they afaik were the first to really do the whole high-end production w/low-brow humor thing.

part of what makes so many of their skits work is that they are on-location and not on chintzy soundstages. and not playing to a studio audience tamps down the tendency to go super broad and lowest common denominator.

GhostTunes on my Pono (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 14:40 (eleven years ago)

S8E1
"Steve, Stefan and the Winslow family spends a vacation at Paris with his Urk-Pad after accidentally sending Carl in place of cheese to his pen pal, Nicole. All is not well when they first arrive, Eddie accidentally damages the café that his parents were eating at and is forced to work there to pay off the damages. Then Nicole is blackmailed by her opportunist cousin, Gilbert to get the plans of the Urk-Pad. Meanwhile Stefan looks to Steve and asks him to help him build his family tree (per Laura's recommendation). The nerd not only helps him build his using the Urkel family tree, but he also admitted that he created Stefan for a lot of things he wanted to be in his life. Stefan admitted that he wasn't a smart guy, but does come close."

andrew m., Wednesday, 15 October 2014 16:00 (eleven years ago)

the Urk-Pad is a teleportation device of Steve's invention. He also invented a time machine, a cloning machine, a Transformation Chamber, and more. They're not exaggerating in the sketch, no.

I know taking a concept and stretching it way beyond the breaking point is these guys thing but damn did that two old ladies in church sketch go farther than I could've possibly imagined. Went from "I hope this ends soon" to "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON" real fast

They're increasingly hit and miss for sure

da croupier, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 03:09 (eleven years ago)

They definitely are, though I've rewatched some old episodes and found I liked a some of 'em way more the second time around. There are a lot of funny moments and great lines that they don't pause for. Also they tend to base a lot of sketches on kind of obscure tropes or insignificant tropes.

They're v inconsistent. And prone to running jokes into the ground.

Well the second part is what I love about them, they come out the other side sometimes and taking things a few steps further than any other comedy show would is kinda their thing. If nothing else they really know how to end a sketch which is really lacking in a lot of sketch comedy (see: like 80% of all SNL skits)

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 13:47 (eleven years ago)

The ending of the mattress skit is good, but what really gets me is when the sales guy goes to shake the customer's hand and the customer just sticks out his finger. It's a tiny moment in an otherwise pretty OTT skit but it's those tiny moments that make me love the show.

like "pussy on the chainwax"?

Nhex, Thursday, 6 November 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)

it feels like, as of late, they're leaning heavier on an insignificant trope to prop up an entire sketch and then not trusting the viewer to be clever enough to keep up
good example is the "Sex Investigator" skit last night where the character does the whole Hannibal 'this is my design' bit as he walks through the crime scene only he has to stop and masturbate every time he gets a revelation
just overly labored and without much payout; woulda been fine for a minute and a half and without the "Stand down Sergeant, that man is the best sex crime investigator in the department etc" expository
as much as i appreciate K&P show's high production values, i think the quality of the setup and filming sometimes hamstrings them by forcing them to ride a joke longer than they would otherwise if it were just a digital camera on location or in a set
the hit-it-and-quit-it dada quality of mr show and kids in the hall is lacking

this show does look really good. i was watching chappelle's show recently and was struck by how cheap and shoddy everything looked-from the sets and the props to the video quality. I guess part of it is how far digital video/cheap CGI has come in the last 10 years.

slam dunk, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)

I feel like I'm walking into the fire here but Chapelle's Show was really inconsistent too. All sketch comedy shows are really. I can't prove it but I also feel like Chapelle's only had like 10-15 minutes of comedy sketches in it per episode, it always seemed like it had way more commercials than any other CC show.

I guess I would agree that K&P tend to go on a little longer than they need to sometimes but I think their most brilliant sketches are the longer ones like "Flicker" or "High on Potanuse" or "Das Negros", and I think they work because they're not just comedies, they're like mini-dramas in a way. That's why I love the ending to the Matress Shopping one, cuz it's such an emotional shock

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:50 (eleven years ago)

Like I don't if they've ever seen the UK show "Jam" but there's a similar vibe there sometimes

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

Chappelle's per episode content was definitely skimpier but I think it's writing was more consistent and audacious. Mr. Show and KITH are the gold standard for solid comedy sketch writing imo - not sure what I would contribute their higher quality control to.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

also agree that this show looks REALLY expensive next to a lot of its predecessors but eh y'know that doesn't make it funnier

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

But even the gold standards of KITH and Mr. Show had lots of bummer sketches. Lots and lots.

Nhex, Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:10 (eleven years ago)

yeah i watched all of mr show recently and there's a lot of painfully unfunny stuff in the latter seasons. chappelle's show always had a lot of pretty hacky sketch concepts/jokes that were saved by chappelle being an extremely funny performer.

slam dunk, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:06 (eleven years ago)

anyway seems like maybe the biggest distinction between K&P and the better shows is all the other shows mentioned had really good casts. K&P has a regular cast of two plus the occasional cameo guest star and that's it.

xp

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:08 (eleven years ago)

I think I'm actually a little more forgiving because of that. Well, also because I missed the first couple of seasons mostly

Nhex, Thursday, 6 November 2014 23:22 (eleven years ago)

I was just thinking that, though K&P can each do so many characters they don't really need other guest stars. Still only having two ppl in the focus limits what they can do and the sketches with say Ty Burrell or Cedric Yarbough are real good so I dunno why they don't bring people in more often

i think the last couple of episodes have been great. last night's especially. i haven't noticed too much of a quality dip with this show at all, i seem to remember last season being maybe my favourite yet. otoh i can totally see the rationale in ending it after this season, it's pointless going on too long with any sketch show, and perhaps veering into the tedious/stale for them making it. plus it seems to have really launched their careers, they have a film coming up iirc.

agreed - there's a certain lazy haminess to a lot of it, just loading things up w silly faces/dialogue/slapstick to make up for a lack of strong writing

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 20:55 (ten years ago)

disagree!

this show is the best, it's hit or miss (e.g. ive never found the luther sketches remotely funny), like every sketch show ever. but there is a level of attention to detail in everything, a lot of the sketches are extremely well-realized in terms of direction, acting, writing imo.

think this season has been great, glad they're going out on a high. looking forward to tonight's episode.

corbyn's gallus (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 21:03 (ten years ago)

they do maintain high production values, but that only goes so far w me. A lot of times they have a simple concept taken to its logical conclusion and then run into the ground - like the politician dick pic sketch. As soon as the premise was made clear (ie within the first five seconds) I knew it was going to end with him walking out from behind the podium w no pants etc. and it did and then it got a callback later and I was just ehhh this is not that funny

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 21:20 (ten years ago)

Jordan Peele loves "acting gay" a lot for sure. Wonder when that (and "hilarious" long duck dong and indian sub-continent comedy cliches) will eventually become taboo. Answer: probably never, mainstream comedy has gotten more rather than less offensive in recent years. blah.

Show is nearly over, three episodes left. And it feels like it's time, I haven't like the last couple episodes much at all, but I enjoyed the hell out of this show at times.

frogbs, Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:18 (ten years ago)

the Tyson thing is easily way up there, so perfect. Gremlins 2 sketch not really funny if you have a) seen Gremlins 2 or b) find their gay stereotype schtick gross and stupid

show never rose above hit-or-miss imo, it always looked great but they had a tendency to run ideas into the ground and recycle stupid tropes as with the constant gay panic stuff

Οὖτις, Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:22 (ten years ago)

I'll see this movie though - should be fun if they don't go overboard with the action shit

Οὖτις, Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:23 (ten years ago)

the gay caricatures are definitely a problem

but never rising above hit-or-miss is a perennial feature of sketch shows imo - my favourite ever sketchshow kids in the hall has a ton of boring, unfunny sketches.

I appreciated that, and this probably contributed to hit or miss quality, they tended not to run successful recurring characters into the ground, and generally attempted to try new things throughout the show's run.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 January 2016 01:40 (ten years ago)

I was tired when I first saw it so I watched the trailer again. Not sure I found it funny, maybe fitfully amusing. Most of all it looked like a bit from the show, a fake trailer, but I can't imagine this stretched to a feature film length. The show's running riffs on cliche action movie tropes can be funny, but I don't know if they are 90 minutes of funny.

de l'asshole (flopson), Sunday, 1 May 2016 18:54 (nine years ago)

the whole movie is the scene in the trailer where K&P act tough and then someone pulls a gun on them and they squeal in terror and narrowly avoid death repeated literally sixteen times

de l'asshole (flopson), Sunday, 1 May 2016 18:56 (nine years ago)

damn that's pretty much what i was afraid of. will wait for video

Nhex, Sunday, 1 May 2016 22:13 (nine years ago)

I actually liked this a lot more than I thought I would! It is, yeah, pretty much the same joke over and over, with a couple recycled from the show for good measure, and definitely one or two bits go on waaaaaaay too long (drug deal, George Michael gags), but K&P have such great chemistry that I guess it didn't matter that the script didn't get a little more attention. (Even as far as some of this shit goes some stuff was flat out lazy, like the way they got K's wife out of the movie ASAP).

But yeah, won't miss anything on video, except for the welcome "awwwwww" that comes from the crowd literally every time the cat is on screen, which was kind of fun.

This, however, you should watch now:

why are comedy movies so hard to do well??????

no one in particular (Abbott), Wednesday, 4 May 2016 01:06 (nine years ago)

Comedy movies? I want to know why comedy TV is so hard to do well. Like "Amy Schemer," "Broad City" ... we're talking maybe 10 episodes a year, each running about 25 minutes, with months of prep, pro writing staff, creative freedom and low budgets, a whole team, and they're so hit or miss it's embarrassing.

when lincoln tells ilana that he slept with someone else and she makes him go over the details outside his car and jumps on it a la michael jackson and then gives him a penis kiss...man, that scene was a tour de force. and so expertly choreographed. just watched it last night. i feel you, i DO comedy LIVE at least once a week, and try to write once a day, and it is hard AF
it just seems like comedy movies don't happen very often and don't happen well when they do? like if you look at the whole HISTORY OF MOVIES how often a great one is a comedy is like...*shrug?* i would probably rate super troopers as the last great one??

no one in particular (Abbott), Wednesday, 4 May 2016 02:27 (nine years ago)

think some comedy screenwriters fall into the trap of writing for the joke instead of just coming up with a great premise and letting the shit congeal organically. like Ghostbusters.

also otm about Super Troopers being dope

PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 19:53 (nine years ago)

Looks intense.

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener, Captain Phillips) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods). At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

I almost wonder if K&P only got picked up for a second season because of Obama's 2012 victory. At the time Obama & Luther was their most famous sketch and the show was too high budget for the audience they got, and CC is famous for cancelling shows like that.

xxxp yeah that makes sense too. cherrypicking stuff on YouTube is generally the way to do it because most episodes would have one or two sketches that fell flat. and as mentioned the good stuff is really really good. in fact that's what often made the show disappointing since there are some sketches where you just think, "c'mon, you guys are better than this". that said the hit/miss ratio is a lot higher than any other sketch show I can think of, outside of maybe SNL from a zillion years ago

frogbs, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:45 (eight years ago)

K&P's sketches mostly followed a similar formula (something slightly ridiculous gradually escalates until it is the most ridiculous thing of all time), but the attention to detail in the costumes/production, the sharp writing, and the way that K&P would throw themselves into their characters elevated the show into a quality sketch show.

ridiculous perm ban decision (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:48 (eight years ago)

it's a similar formula but I feel like K&P took that idea a lot further than any other American sketch show I can name. the series finale callback to the first episode was pretty brilliant, in retrospect

frogbs, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:58 (eight years ago)

agreed - their h/m ratio was staggeringly good compared to like 99% of sketch comedy shows - even Chappelle's Show - and their highs were really high. the great production/direction helped a lot too ofc

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 22:10 (eight years ago)

That formula was SOOO consistent too, but gave some great classics like "I Said Biiiiitch" and the one where they order soul food.

soul food competition and I said biiiiitch.

the aerobics one was fun but it was also like, just a recreation of a real thing?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:05 (five years ago)

admittedly there are a lot of not very good or worse sketches I completely forgot about

was rewatching some early season news with my gf, who had never seen the show, and it is for sure a bit more hit and miss than I had remembered. she wasn't particularly impressed and we ended up only watching a season or so.

Obama mic drop on the street corner is almost too short to qualify but it’s another favorite.

iirc the later seasons were stronger. though some of the all-timer sketches are in seasons 1 and 2

The real thing didn’t have a murder subplot, tbf

college obama + bobby mcferrin vs michael winslow are the best key and peele sketches

i never found the outkast one to be that funny

Spottie, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 20:24 (five years ago)

the outkast one was funny, but not true to the rule dudes' dynamic.

bobby mcferrin vs michael winslow, that was hilarious. also remembering the lmfao sketch was pretty good.

It always seemed to me like Andre 3000 had flamboyant style but kind of a dour personality, while Big Boi had a more restrained personal style but was also more cheerful.

I love a ton of K&P sketches but I don't think any has made me laugh harder than the crying gangster.

omg, can't believe i didn't think about front hand, back hand

I'd missed that one somehow. Extremely good

I kind of feel bad for it, but I can't watch this without thinking of their aerobics sketch:

Una mujer hizo su clase de aerobic sin darse cuenta de que estaban dando el golpe de Estado en Myanmar. Y pues puede verse como el convoy de militares llega al parlamento. pic.twitter.com/fmFUzhawRe
