Because:

Bryan Singer, who helmed the first two superb installments that launched the franchise at Fox and whom Deadline was first to reveal will helm X-Men: Days of Future Past, has just Tweeted the following news:

“I’d like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult to X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Also thrilled to announce Sir Ian Mckellen and Sir Patrick Stewart.”

How is that going to work with the actors playing both Magneto and Professor Xavier, in the same movie with Fassbender and McAvoy, who played those characters as young men in X-Men: First Class? “The movie is called X-Men: Days of Future Past, use your imagination,” Singer tells me.

they're supposedly doing Guardians of the Galaxy. That team has a somewhat similar feel.

mh, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 22:25 (thirteen years ago)

first class was awfully good, getting both eras together like this seems more like a third movie thing than a second one.

X-Men 3 suuuucked btw

mh, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

It's really going to depend on how they adapt DOFP to the movie universe; the less actual overlap between the past and future eras, the better.

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

First Class was better than 3, but they both suuuuucked, though for different reasons. I liked Magneto: Nazi Hunter, just like in another universe I liked David: Space Dodderer, but man, I did not otherwise think Fassbinder did a good job. His strainin'-my-brain Magneto moves looked like he was taking a big dump in his pants.

mh, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know that he was ever washed down, really, so to speak. X2 might be his best movie (guess which other obvious contender I don't think much of). He was probably dumb to leave the franchise in the first place, and going back to it is probably the best thing he could do for himself.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

Oh i think he's a terrible director (don't even rate X2 that highly) but this seems like a backwards step for everyone concerned. Compared to the excitement surrounding the other Marvel universe, this is all a bit old hat

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 02:15 (thirteen years ago)

There's some really good stuff in the second X-Men movie, and I imagine without it and its success we wouldn't have gotten the more successful subsequent Marvel reboots. Then again, you could also say that without the silly failures of Ang Lee's "Hulk" and Singer's "Stuporman" we might not have gotten the more successful reboots, either.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

Man, can't believe Singer is almost 50.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

Compared to the excitement surrounding the other Marvel universe, this is all a bit old hat

Yeah, this is otm. The Marvel Studios movies have done a great job of putting a lot of the fun stuff from the comics on-screen and creating a sense of a shared universe. The X-Men movies, on the other hand, have seemed increasingly like box-ticking exercises to ensure the movie rights didn't revert back to Marvel.

I did enjoy First Class, mainly for Fassbender and McAvoy's performances, but the idea of a flashback movie must surely have come because they had painted themselves into a stupid corner at the end of X3 and couldn't think of an alternative. I have similar reservations about the thinking behind bringing back McKellen and Stewart.

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

the 3rd x-men movie is like a surprisingly entertaining bill mantlo fill-in after the ponderous len weinesque first two

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

I liked the first two fine but I always kind of tried too hard to like them because that was as good as it got at the time. Glad that Marvel is finally putting out movies that I enjoy unreservedly (Lee's Hulk was stylistically annoying, and I never got what people saw in the Spider-flicks).

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

xp Haha, I'd never thought of it like that before but you're right. It certainly has all the Mantlo hallmarks of being hastily hashed-together at the last minute to cover a blown deadline. In fact, wasn't X3 rushed into production to meet a predetermined release date?

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

turds (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

he didn't like the fact that they didn't have a script or finished production design but that the release date meant that shooting started in a week or three, iirc

Or... they are taking the second-most popular X-Men story and adapting it for the big screen after taking the most popular X-Men story (Dark Phoenix) and adapting it for the big screen

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

Of course that's what they're doing, DJP - it just seems to me that the fact they needed to quietly reboot with a shift to the sixties instead of just continuing on to do Days of Future Past as a direct sequel to X3 suggests they ran out of narrative steam with the third movie.

It had a cool plot, more going on in it than the first one by far, some nice shoutouts to bits of continuity that you wouldn't think they'd use, the cool Wolverine/Deathstrike fight, the whole Magneto-recruiting-Pyro thing which was cool...but just overall not compelling. Lololol this movie. Not like the continuity ever made any sense before either but you can pretty much ignore everything that happened in at least three of the previous movies now. I just can't figure out -which- three.

Roz, Thursday, 22 May 2014 08:33 (eleven years ago)

well good because who remembers any of that stuff anyway

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 May 2014 14:55 (eleven years ago)

Even the poster has continuity errors! To be fair, is this now the longest same-continuity superhero franchise? Seven films? Gotta be hard to read capsule plot summaries of that many movies and keep it all straight.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 22 May 2014 15:53 (eleven years ago)

Fox needs to do the right thing and sell the rights to Disney

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 22 May 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

imo the franchise would be best served by forgetting most of the other movies existed so I don't see that as a negative

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 22 May 2014 16:02 (eleven years ago)

To be fair, is this now the longest same-continuity superhero franchise?

IIRC the Wolverine movies and First Class contradict each other in many parts, and of course Magneto and Xavier and Beast in the X-Men movies are younger than they are in First Class (though with Beast there's at least a bit of a handwave to explain that in FC). Before Days of Future Past was announced, I think everyone assumed FC was a reboot?

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 May 2014 16:20 (eleven years ago)

except they emphasized repeatedly it was not a reboot and had jackman as wolverine in it

balls, Thursday, 22 May 2014 16:23 (eleven years ago)

idk, the hand-waving and flat-out ignoring of continuity when it becomes inconvenient is a pretty key part of comics history anyway, doesn't really bother me.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 May 2014 16:26 (eleven years ago)

i kinda like the absurd nods to continuity in the bond series (generally references to the wife) where they pretend connery -> dalton (maybe brosnan even) is all one guy

this was pretty good

adam, Saturday, 24 May 2014 23:19 (eleven years ago)

yeah this was enjoyable and really was able to take advantage of there being so much backstory by now, enjoyed also how it used continuity as something you can have fun w/ but not something you ever need to feel beholden too. was pretty skeptical of quicksilver going in but everything w/ him was fantastic. making these things period pieces adds so much to the appeal for me, in my dreams the same would be done w/ fantastic four but that's clearly never going to happen. had just half watched first class the night before so was kinda stunned that literally every mutant from that movie that didn't have a line in this one was tortured and killed in the interim. couldn't tell how much mckellan and stewart looking so old was they are so old or just 'it's the future'. they're getting better at making these things.

balls, Sunday, 25 May 2014 00:20 (eleven years ago)

This was ok I guess. Quicksilver parts were the most fun.

Least convincing movie-Nixon since Watchmen lol

The internal logic (ha) kinda confused me. So the original sentinels were invented in 1973..ok. Where were they during the previous movies? Why weren't they being used against the mutants then?

Also what was the point of Magneto lifting a stadium, other than looking sort of impressive?

Yeah, this was okay - lol at how ruthlessly they erased X3 from history, though.

Quicksilver's set piece was clearly the best part. I wish they'd kept him around for longer, but I guess they dropped him and removed Charles' powers for most of the movie to ensure the whole thing wasn't wrapped up in 30 minutes.

Also lol at how thoroughly they managed to fuck up the continuity not just across the whole of the X-Men movies but also even between the end of The Wolverine and Days of Future Past, which were made so close together that there's an apparent setup for the latter in the former. At the end of The Wolverine, Logan's lost his adamantium claws and returned to having bone claws; in DOFP, he has adamantium claws again in the future. In The Wolverine, he's approached in the present day by Charles and Magneto who need him to help in the past; in DOFP, it's way in the future before they realise they will have to send him back in time.

Disagree. And im not into firey solos chief. (Phil D.), Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:21 (eleven years ago)

right but the only magnetic fields strong enough to be felt are ferromagnetic so urgh why am I even wasting time thinking about this

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:26 (eleven years ago)

The primary application of his power is control over magnetism and the manipulation of ferrous and nonferrous metal. While the maximum amount of mass he can manipulate at one time is unknown, he has moved large asteroids several times and effortlessly levitated a 30,000 ton nuclear submarine. His powers extend into the subatomic level (insofar as the electromagnetic force is responsible for chemical bonding), allowing him to manipulate chemical structures and rearrange matter, although this is often a strenuous task. He can manipulate a large number of individual objects simultaneously and has assembled complex machinery with his powers. He can also affect non-metallic and non-magnetic objects to a lesser extent and frequently levitates himself and others. He can also generate electromagnetic pulses of great strength and generate and manipulate electromagnetic energy down to photons. He can turn invisible by warping visible light around his body.[93] Another way in which Magneto frequently uses his power is the projection of force-fields which selectively block out matter and energy. These fields are strong enough to withstand the detonation of multiple thermonuclear weapons, hence Magneto is invulnerable to most harm when surrounded by his shield and can survive in deep space thanks to it. He can also channel his powers through his own body to increase his strength and durability far beyond human limits and has a baseline reaction time 15 times as short as that of regular humans. On occasion he has altered the behavior of gravitational fields around him, which has been suggested as evidence of the existence of a unified field which he can manipulate. He has demonstrated the capacity to produce a wormhole and to safely teleport himself and others via the wormhole.

they weren't reprogrammed (they still have the 'kill all mutants' directive); they were restrained with the metal cords. magneto probably 'sees' with the metal stuff the same way a plumber 'sees' with a snake. what didn't make sense was why the 70s sentinels looked like ipods, when they should have looked like getter robo or mazinger or something.

That was very silly, but I just went along with it. They did bother to have a scene where he's magnetically stitching himself up while examining the blueprints for the robots, so I guess he could've figured out how to mess with their programming. But yeaahhh it's a stretch.

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 29 May 2014 20:17 (eleven years ago)

no, she survives, they just captured her and got her DNA (remember that in that timeline X-Men 1/2/3 still happen) but she presumably escapes later. it still takes them 50-60 years to get decent Sentinels apparently, but I guess they did have one in the Danger Room sequence in X3

Magneto has been painted a true genocidal maniac in these movies so his SUDDEN AND INEVITABLE BETRAYAL was unsurprising. also the gun flipping into his hand was pretty boss.

Nhex, Thursday, 29 May 2014 20:30 (eleven years ago)

Saw this this morning, was OK. Pretty ugly to look at and took a while to get going, but worked out in the end. Felt nice and self-contained, ie, very two issue narrative arc. Love how (and this is true in the comics) that certain mutants, even those with seemingly mundane powers, can be written into being basically all-powerful, not just the likes of life stadiums while he's controlling killer robots Magneto or Prof X or Jean Grae but but also Kitty Pryde or Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver or whomever. Quicksilver bits and 3D teleporting stuff the best in here. Meeting of the generations was a little weird, Wolverine looked like he was hanging with kids. Surprisingly violent for a PG-13. Lots of impaling.

I saw a 10:30 screening, and within one minute in a theater with six people in it there was a fight and they had to have a cop escort a woman out. Pretty sure it was cell phone related, and not related to arguing about the space-time continuum.

Vitamin D deficiency is known to cause several bone diseases[8] including:

Rickets, a childhood disease characterized by impeded growth, and deformity, of the long bones. The earliest sign of subclinical vitamin D deficiency is Craniotabes, abnormal softening or thinning of the skull.[9]
Osteomalacia, a bone-thinning disorder that occurs exclusively in adults and is characterized by proximal muscle weakness and bone fragility.
Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by reduced bone mineral density and increased bone fragility.
Muscle aches and weakness (in particular proximal limb girdle)[6]
Muscle twitching (Fasciculations)[citation needed]

The writer actually answered this in an interview. He said someone comes in each week with a plastic razor and shaves him.

Loved how they worked in Kelsey Grammer Beast just randomly walking down a hall, saying hello.

The plot is just Terminator 2 which I am fine with. They even had the time traveler wake up nude!

Enjoyed this, thought the slightly ponderous dialogue scenes had some of the same flavour as prime Claremont/Byrne handwringing - and the predominance of Brit actors in the main parts started to feel like a nod to Byrne and Claremont's anglophile roots.

da croupier, Friday, 6 June 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

Loved this. Couldn't give a shit about continuity with the other movies. The Quicksilver set-piece and the Zapruder-style footage of Magneto and Raven fighting are the kind of flourishes that superhero movies need more of. Strong performances too - pretty sweet that they have actors as good as McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence for the central not-quite-love triangle.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Friday, 6 June 2014 16:19 (eleven years ago)

Just watched this, did not do the comic justice IMO.

Why did Mystique shoot Magneto, though? Was she just getting even with him?

Haha, yes!

Wished the future-set scenes, and numerous other conspicuous FX sequences, weren't so butt-ugly. Like, even when I'm watching this at home in two dimensions, I know that I'm watching something that was made for 3D.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 October 2014 04:33 (eleven years ago)

The Terminator came out after the original story though! Cameron might've got the idea from Claremont and Byrne for all we know.

Maisie Williams was just cast as Wolfsbane in the upcoming New Mutants movie (which I somehow only heard about for the first time this week). That might be the most perfectly spot-on X-Men casting decision since Kelsey Grammer's brief tenure as Beast.

And as a huge X-Men fan can I just say, as it sounds like they're going with the old school roster, that I'm 1000000000x more excited about a New Mutants movie than I have been about any of the X-Men movies. Seriously, if Warlock is in this thing I might pretty much just die.

my greatest wish for this is that maisie williams plays rahne with the same godawful scottish accent that claremont used to write for her

also i'll crack up if they bring in Cable to connect this to Deadpool 2

Well, I guess they're also making an X-Force movie in the wake of Deadpool's massive success? I assume the X-Force and New Mutants films are separate things, anyway.

My Batroc-ization of Gambit's dialogue is a reminder that Claremont's accents could be seen as relatively restrained in comparison to those employed elsewhere in the Marvel universe.
