My sister's finally moving to L.A. in the New Year . . . any ideas for a cool type of gift membership or certificate I could buy her? I was looking at MOCA but I hear they have a lot of problems now, so maybe LACMA, or something more alternative/interesting?
― Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago)
If you want to drop 300 bucks to get her the black card for this, it's totally worth it: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cinefamily/cinefamily-digital-projection-and-theater-restorat

― Bound by Habitrails (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:05 (twelve years ago)
She does like movies, but not quite as much as I do. And it's a bit out of my price range, but I'll look at one of the cheaper cards. Does anyone know of anything foodie or wine-y or spa-y? I looked at the Esouteric Tours but I'm not sure how into it she would be.

We're playing at show this Friday at Viva Cantina in Burbank - it's an old-school, cheap-margarita Mexican restaurant near the LA Equestrian Center that's passed through the years without any incursions from irony or hipsters. The clientele skews older, but it's become a big locus of rockabilly and weird outsider activity. I like the place - Pappy & Harriet's as filtered through David Lynch instead of Gram Parsons. The food is sufficiently good, drinks are strong, and there's a good chance that the night can take a turn for the strange.
Anyway, Azalia Snail (and her new band LoveyDove) are putting together the night - first time doing so. Except for Azalia's band (they're great, check 'em out if you like her stuff), I'm unfamiliar with the other folks on the bill, except there's apparently poet performing in between bands and there's a sitar player at some point. We're going all-in on the drone rock, Young Marble Giants/Jesus And Mary Chain noise action. By the way, we're only playing Lady Gaga songs and (to take a page from Ciccone Youth) we're calling ourselves the Germanottas. Run for your lives...

Drove by the Dream Works building, which I had no clue was in Burbank. Those couple of blocks are so hidden -- the "Disney University" building and all the buildings Disney has purchased on Flower in recent years. All of the sudden, when I saw how extensively Disney-owned that area is, downtown Burbank's economy and infrastructure made much more sense.
The Dream Works building's location floored me. A lot of people assume it's still a part of Universal or it'd be in the Pico/Robertson area -- you never hear about it in Burbank.
― Cunga, Friday, 12 April 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)
I think spielberg's offices are on the uni lot, but dreamworks animation campus has always been in glendale. disney is in burbank though.
― wk, Friday, 12 April 2013 01:43 (twelve years ago)
Disney is in Burbank *and* right next to the Dreamworks office. They have Disney's University, which is called something more ambiguous on the signs (when there are any signs), and theres even a shuttle taking employees from Disney's Buena Vista location, the more well-known location, to its offices on Flower St. Disney bought more if this property in Glendale I believe. Walt originally wanted to build Disney Land in Glendale I was told by my tour guide/father.
And I think you're right about Spielberg's offices remaining on Universal. Amblin entertainment it was still technically called though the company itself was subsumed into Dreamworks.
― Cunga, Friday, 12 April 2013 03:10 (twelve years ago)
yeah, I just meant the disney studio lot. they have lots of offices all over the place. looks like glendale has imagineering, consumer products and tv animation.

book soup, y'all:
05/08/2013 - 7:00 pmEvent Details:Sally Kellerman presents and signs Read My Lips: Stories of a Hollywood Life
Sally Kellerman's portrayal of Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H remains a landmark performance. Throughout her long career Kellerman has been a real dame--honest, down-to-earth, sultry, funny, and unfiltered. In Read My Lips, Kellerman shares colorful tales of her years as an up-and-coming actress in the early 60s, when Hollywood was a small neighborhood full of chance encounters. To pay for acting classes (ten dollars each, alongside the likes of Jack Nicholson) she waited tables at a coffee house on the Sunset Strip that was a hangout for Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen, and Warren Beatty. While she watered her lawn one morning in her bathrobe, Ringo Starr stopped in his convertible to say he'd just moved into the neighborhood and she should drop by; during the Vietnam War, she dated Henry Kissinger. Over the years, there were drugs, affairs, diets, and therapy, a music album, a marriage, and motherhood. As the innocence of the 1950s collided with the free spirit of the 1960s, everything felt new and exciting, and Sally Kellerman was right in the middle of it. In Read My Lips Sally transports us back to that unique era and shares the challenges and rewards of her marriage, children, and her iconic career. (Weinstein Books)

also, burbank and toluca lake are definitely funny, but i'm on the fence about glendale -- i want to say yes because ethnic enclaves usually are funny, but otherwise glendale is pretty staid and middle class.

woodland hills has tons of comedy potential. u mad.
― wk, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:48 (twelve years ago)
agreed about Woodland Hills not having much room for comedy.
The country-ish, deserty areas surrounding Santa Clarita: Agua Dulce, Green Valley (home of the show "JUSTIFIED") are all hilarious. As are Valencia's "biggest fish in a small pond, BABY" pretensions. We will pass over Palmdale and Lancaster and Barstow with silence (trying to hold back the giggles -- and I lived out there, in some of these places, for a bit as a boy, so I can joke-fun all. I. want.)
Malibu - beaten to death, little room left for comedy unless you get really inside baseball about the place.
― Cunga, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)
Calabasas = very funny, because it combines elements of Malibu/West Side with the Valley -- it's not quite in Thousand Oaks yet.

― Salt Mama Celeste (donna rouge), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 23:07 (twelve years ago)
we are neighbors!
If New York City's Brooklyn neighborhoods were bathed in sunshine, they might find their west coast counterpart in Los Angeles' Highland Park. Not too far from Downtown, this northeast LA neighborhood is on the fast track to mass appeal. Historic homes combine with corridors replete with modern amenities and cozy bookshops tucked-away in secret corners.
― J'ackHughes (admrl), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 23:10 (twelve years ago)

but still good
i've only been to the original location (on heliotrope)
(big x-p)I did go to the Police Academy once, but on a weekend when the cafe is closed. There's a little outdoor patio/party area that's kind of wild (fake rock walls, jungle-ish plants, maybe a waterfall) I think I was told it's open to the public for free, so you can bring a lunch or even use the grill they have there. Probably no booze, though.
― nickn, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)
I eat at the Police Academy cafe pretty often. It's great if you low on funds and you just want a basic ham/eggs/pancakes and infinite coffee (No joke, if you order coffee they give you an entire thermal pitcher). Best time to go is in the late morning during the week - there's usually folks from other police forces training at the pistol range and the cafe is, well, filled with uniform officers. Absolutely do not miss looking over the historic LAPD photos on the wall and the Jack Webb shrine.

Looking for an indoor(or shaded)/outdoor venue for a large daytime gathering. Any thoughts. Would be great if it was east of Silver Lake and kid-friendly too. Tempted by the soon to be open Echo Park but am worried it might be crazy there for a while. Also considered Golden Road Brewery in Glendale but a bit douchey.
― J'ackHughes (admrl), Sunday, 26 May 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)

Golden Road has a douche element, but it's tolerable. Just avoid it whenever the LA beer crawl bus is making the rounds. The food there is still A+.
Home on the corner of Fletcher and Riverside Dr. could be another possibility (especially with the indoor/outdoor requirements)

That overnight Tonalism show in Altadena scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled. Some problem with the property it was going to be held on (Zorthian Ranch, which is accessed via a fairly narrow dirt road, though I don't know that that was the problem). about the metro bus/tow truck crash...
NBCLA reports that Adhami, who may have been driving twice the legal limit at the time of the crash, does not have a current driver's license. He appears to own the tow truck company Adhami's Hermosa Beach Towing, which does not have a permit to legally operate in the state. His license has been suspended four times since 2009.Adhami has also had run-ins with police, including a high-speed chase in Ohio in 2008. He was reportedly driving 69 mph in a 35 mph zone, and when police cornered him in a cornfield, he falsely claimed to have a bomb strapped to his body. He later pleaded guilty to feeling from police and making terrorist threats.

Secret to LA friends: the best place to soak up some public a/c is in the atrium of the Bonaventure Hotel downtown. Get any kind of drink at the bar - they validate parking. No public wi-fi, so you'll actually get some work done.

I walked to the "good" Ralphs in Western Pasadena today at lunch, and didn't want to leave.
Also, for those that know the old Ambassador College campus, the two "honeycomb" buildings are being demolished as we speak. RIP 60s modernist architecture.

good how? and which one? colorado?
― IKEA-Guinea (donna rouge), Friday, 28 June 2013 07:17 (twelve years ago)
like a ralph's fresh fare? i live near one of those (the one by where donna rouge works).
― paula deezen (get bent), Friday, 28 June 2013 08:02 (twelve years ago)
Yes, it's a Ralphs Fresh Fare, On West Colorado across from the Rusnak car dealerships. The Ralphs nearer to me was remodeled a few years ago so that it looks similar, but no FF designation and the contents aren't as good. The good Ralphs has salmon in the salad bar that is surprisingly good.
― nickn, Friday, 28 June 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)
oh yeah that ralph's by my work is nice, although some of the deli food was meh
― IKEA-Guinea (donna rouge), Friday, 28 June 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)
Last time I got a salad there the croutons were stale, but otherwise it's decent. I was really just impressed with the salmon, because it's much better than Whole Foods' salad bar salmon, which had a kind of "turkey loaf" aspect to it. So you work near that Ralphs? (Wells Fargo building?)

free screening of computer chess at cinefamily at 6 p.m. on the 28th. first come, first served.
― hannah arendt you glad you didn't say banana (get bent), Tuesday, 23 July 2013 06:27 (twelve years ago)
Wrapped up in a dense ball of whimsy, vintage tech gear, off-the-cuff surrealism and an Altman-like diagonal wanderlust, Computer Chess marks a breathtaking new direction for indie stalwart Andrew Bujalski, here departing from the mumblecore naturalism of Funny Ha Ha and Mutual Appreciation to present a left-field melding of the fantastical and the mundane. Setting the action at a nondescript hotel in 1980, and capturing his images using the unique B&W look of Portapak cameras (the pioneering Seventies portable video format), Bujalski brings together a panoply of old-school computer programmer types ostensibly for a chess tournament pitting circuit board against circuit board. What emerges from this breezy, vignette-laden masterpiece of spirit and comedic tone are quietly brilliant meditations on the nature of A.I., Carter-era optimism and the lingua franca of nerd-dom. No film released in 2013 comes even close to Computer Chess's wholly unique balance between playful emotional resonance and keen aesthetics -- and no other indie film in recent memory evokes the warm feelings of a bygone era with such empathetic zeal. After the screening, stick around for a Q&A with media theorist/chess obsessive Scott McCloud ("Understanding Comics") and computer programmer Maciej Ceglowski (Pinboard, Bedbug Registry)!Dir. Andrew Bujalski, 2013, digital presentation, 92 min.

sorry for thread-hogging, but i'm looking for a fairly central, low-key bar or gallery space that would let me have control of the decks for a night. thinking of doing a jodycast event where i play music from my podcast, maybe give away some "prizes," maybe get some innocent bystanders interested. really more for fun than for promo, though, and within the next few weeks.
do you know a good place for this?

Ran across this coffee place in Larchmont that caters to laptop nomads: http://www.bricksandscones.com
Sandwiches are good (but expensive), but it's comfortable enough to work for hours at a stretch. Handy to have a comfortable mid-day hangout in this part of town.

C+ in Glendale closed! I need a new midday hang out place in the east SFV. Basic requirements: 1. I can get a decent ice latte. 2. I can sit with a laptop for two hours and not get hassled. 3. There's enough other laptop jockeys working there that I can, er, "surf" their mental focus and actually get something done - making this whole effort worthwhile.
