well i guess i was taught that we lived in a postracial society and growing up i was in enough of a bubble to not really question that and that continued through college and then after college i moved to a place where i didnt have to think about it for 3 years and then i came back and i realized it wasnt true

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:55 (twelve years ago)

and then i realized i didnt really know the language for how to talk about these things and then i did some reading and found out and now i like to talk about it a lot

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

ias* my impression was that you were fairly savvy about identity/cultural studies issues and chose to develop conversations in unconventional ways. i'm a little disappointed to discover that the only barrier for you joining the aggrieved social justice brigade was acquiring the popular idioms of the tumblr intellectual movement :/

i wouldn't argue that marxism is the 'true' context for discussing social issues (tho it's obviously one i find particularly compelling) but i do find the irate shaming of social justice + privilege discourses to be anti-intellectual at best. i was really bummed when i read this post:

well sanpaku is a super-rational-bordering-on-savantism dude so i wouldn't really have expected better

― 乒乓, Wednesday, April 24, 2013 12:30 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

is super-rational-bordering-on-savantism something bad? i certainly prefer it to the airing of political grievances.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:08 (twelve years ago)

of course its bad because it assumes that there is a rational or logical way to think

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

privilege discourse and irate shaming are not inseparable, and the one doesn't always entail the other. it's easy to think it does tho if you get all yr inputs on this topic from tumblr

resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

are there more and less rational or logical ways to think though?

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

i appreciate when sanpaku takes that angle w/r/t stuff like oil, nutrition, i am gonna facepalm when he applies it to the topic of cultural appropriation

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:11 (twelve years ago)

probably and it's gonna depend on the topic! xp

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:11 (twelve years ago)

surely recognizing that no content is fully objective doesn't preclude one from having more intellectual or stimulating conversations

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:11 (twelve years ago)

i think one of the things that makes me most mad nowadays is like, when ilxors think that, because they post on this board and are pretty left in general, they think it means they dont have any blind spots in their own thinking (i'll cop to being like this all the time)

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

also i don't know sanpaku's identity structure but assuming he is a white privileged male i don't know why that should invalidate his opinion on cultural appropriation. he's an intelligent guy who is well read and has a lot of thoughtful ideas. i think a better move is to engage his argument on his terms, not ask him to check his privilege.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

tbh i think ilx's biggest blind spot in thinking is this social justice shaming nonsense

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

mordy the post i was responding to was literally the most anti-intellectual post posted on this board since momus left, if he had posted about idk the kilowatt extraction from oil shales i would not really care

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

hah hah you are already trapped in its logic of shame, there is no escape for u xp

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

maybe you can explain to me in an intellectual way why u think that way about social justice shaming

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:14 (twelve years ago)

yeah absolutely. it's bc instead of dealing directly w/ an argument is tries to undermine the person making the argument.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)

the whole gr8080 chicago schtick has been a development, like reading the prequel to the hawaii chapter. It's akin to the deniro/pacino chapters of godfather 2 or when the cast of coach would recall their minnesota days after moving to florida.

pplains, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

social justice is a political movement, not an intellectual movement- it's about who gets to speak, not what is said.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

i wouldnt really think of it that way, i would say its more making that person consider their own intense subjectivity

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

well when the opportunities for who gets to speak are disparately distributed, maybe u need to get that out of the way before u can start acknowledging what is actually said

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

idk it's more about seeking to establish a voice for ppl whose voices have had structural obstacles to being heard

resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

can the subaltern speak? is the question u should be dealing with imo

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

iow dayo otm xps

resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

this is something where i sympathize with mordy cuz the blog-language of communitarian resentment is dull and complacent, while recognizing that not being subject to various estrangements ensures that i can just ignore them in a way visible minorities cannot

wrt sanpaku, he is being blasé but then the subject (a minor pop artiste given to garish affectations borrows from whichever subaltern ethnic dress) is so minor that the calumnization is absurd

Toxicara Delevingne (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

haven't read "can the subaltern speak?" but I'm pretty sure the summary is "no"

resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

oh, if it's "intense" subjectivity then.

but seriously, it's not a huge ask to say that the argument is more important than the person making the argument. or at least that such a position is a virtue worth striving towards. but i also care more about arguing to the crowd than arguing to the opponent. i don't think i'll ever change, eg silby's mind, but i think ppl's reading an argument i may have w/ silby may find my arguments compelling. if you're more invested in actually converting your opponent then social justice becomes important. that is why it's political, and not intellectual. you aren't trying to make an argument, you're trying to make a particular person believe an argument.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:20 (twelve years ago)

Attempting to address social issues with pure intellectualism and pretend there's an objective position assumes that emotion and experience are barriers to overcome, not an essential part of the human experience

mh, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:20 (twelve years ago)

if "the argument" is privileged by the idea of an objective position, then you can attack the person's own position to show they're not on objective ground

mh, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)

Without wishing to cause offense, I find this thread somewhat tedious.

He has a lot of baggage (handlers' perks) (Michael White), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)

well mordy im not really trying to get on the harlem globetrotters here, youre right in that respect

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

sanpaku didn't argue that he was right bc he was objective tho.

re minority voices, i notice that on ilx the ppl most invested in the social justice discourse - not to bring other names in but let's say in this argument silby and dayo (tho there are far more egregious examples elsewhere on the board) were not silent or unheard before they jumped on the discourse, and in jumping on the discourse other voices weren't suddenly privileged. the same people are talking, they are just talking about something else (and something quite boring imho).

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

I can't think of anywhere else I'd be more disaffected, the sardonic posts would reach new heights

can someone move Mordy on to another thread

mh, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

i wouldn't have brought this up but i noticed that dayo went from a poster whose posts i enjoyed to a poster whose posts i could read from a dozen different dn's. like i wrote above it's a bummer, but it's obv his choice to post in whatever style he wishes. i don't think it's necessarily worth the otm's to compromise what i found engaging about his posting style, but that's my own pov and i obv don't have the same things at stake as dayo does.

idk mordy, i'd like to change but u know, once u have seen something u cant really unsee it. i'd like to change it but i cant really change my phenotype + the experiences it brings. u have a sibling for whom this might be true one day as well. it's interesting stuff! i wish u wouldn't be so dismissive.

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:27 (twelve years ago)

'political' to me reads as intent to win power and control resources, and in a mass political system implies a large constituency, which i don't think (internet) social justice really has. isn't it just... liberalism? or, arguments w/in it? liberals/liberalism (and people outside it) have been wrestling with quote-unquote identity politics forever. i'm not convinced of novelty here. either that or what constitutes #socialjustice hasn't been defined

goole, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:27 (twelve years ago)

i didn't really have cause to think of myself as racialized before, but now i do, and i can't unracialize myself, thats on america, u feel me?

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

Mordy's new shtick could be to have an epiphany mid-threads that he's made a change in the fabric of the conversation, go "Ah, yes" and step away from the thread. Because I have the tendency to linger on topics for way too long and drift between stern questioner and devil's advocate when I really said that all I had to say. And I recognize my own.

sorry we racialized you dayo :(

mh, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

Mordy I can honestly say during my first year or two at a Small Liberal Arts College with lots of Aggravating Activists I had some similar reactions as you to some of this stuff, and there's definitely approaches to anti-oppressive activism that aren't really, uh, well-pitched for winning over outside audiences (and some stuff that I'm never gonna get on board with like BDS)

so what I'd recommend if you find yourself clashing with other ppl on ilx (who, as I like to point out on situations like this, you probably would agree with on like 75%+ of randomly-selected political issues) on stuff is to find some people talking about it somewhere who you are otherwise willing to take seriously (i.e. not tumblr teens) and try to start grokking where it's coming from

tbh tumblr social justice warriors are mostly blowing off steam & interacting with their own echo chamber

resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

sry for helping to ruin the thread

resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

is tumblr social justice the thing where people complain about how they can't get a surgery to turn into a unicorn?

mh, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

there was a point in which i really did believe the author was dead, that it was the argument itself that mattered, yeah yeah, thats kind of boring to me now + doesnt reflect my experience of lyfe except in certain circumstances

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

but if u do care mordy i guess what made me mad about sanpaku's post was that it's just a stylized version of the kind of logic that has been used to justify white cultural appropriation + worse for many years now, some wld say centuries, but i didnt really feel like arguing with him since i didnt have 300 jstor articles to link to since thats what it would prob take to convince him

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)

a lot of this stuff is p basic foucault, butler, postcolonial theory in general, sometimes u dont feel like framing arguments in those terms and u just wanna lay a big fuck u down because it doesnt really even matter in the end

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

why do i get the impression that ppl who like to say that stuff is basic foucault, butler, postcolonial theory in general have read very little of the aforementioned themselves

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:40 (twelve years ago)

it's bc they don't actually seem to know what those ppl said. point me to foucault's book on cultural appropriation tho.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:41 (twelve years ago)

like it's been a few years since i read butler (and i didn't enjoy her much when i did) but she isn't just someone you can namedrop as a vague explanation for the position you aren't bothering to argue. just bc you've heard of edward said doesn't mean you can just say cultural appropriation and drop your mic.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

especially bc these aren't non-controversial ppl either. current thinking on foucault is that for all his very cool + interesting ideas he pretty much didn't understand history at all.

silby with all due respect i don't think you have anything to explain

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

what i find very influential from foucault is his idea of how power is distributed, but not only distributed + also how it's created - how maybe the general conception of power is that there is a powerful actor that is using it, maybe the state - but how does it manifest itself? it's one thing to say that the state represses, but how? i find it very useful when foucault characterizes power as being created from the amalgamation of the uncountable interactions between actors in every day life - how people are implicitly taught the power dynamics that exist in society from the moment they are born, they are socialized to use and take advantage of these expressions of power that occur at an individual + instantaneous level. summing up all these interactions u can maybe start getting an idea of what u might mean when u say that there still exists a global white hegemony. obv thats my application of foucault and probably u might say its facile and 2 easy! but i also find that it reflects my experience of life v well and thats why i like it

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:51 (twelve years ago)

the difficulty (problematics) occur when someone like silby, with his heart in the right place but seldom with anything terribly enlightening to say, can never be in the wrong on ilx

there are always demons to slay, and any excesses shall be forgiven in a noble cause, and no piety can ever be reaffirmed too often or too stridently

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:51 (twelve years ago)

but seriously, it's not a huge ask to say that the argument is more important than the person making the argument. or at least that such a position is a virtue worth striving towards.

― Mordy, Thursday, April 25, 2013 2:20 PM (12 minutes ago)

i tried long and hard to make this point on ILX, with little success. i eventually came to see that, if you have an overriding interest in clearing room in the discussion for underrepresented voices (and perhaps minimizing the influence of overrepresented ones), it's irrelevant at best, regressive at worst. that insight didn't make me believe it any less, but it did incline me to be a bit less insistent.

anyway, that's my new schtick.

contenderizer, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

the problem is that silby is trying to teach ppl about privilege and using the little academic jargon he knows as a blunt object to project authority. that's tumblr intellectualism. he isn't making an argument about what butler meant when she said X in Y text. that's why his argument always reduces to: "it's frustrating to argue with you bc you don't get it," bc he isn't actually making an argument, he's making a political move. (silby, sorry to pick on you - again you're hardly the worst offender here but you're the only one on this thread.)

what i find interesting about butler is the social construction of not just gender but also identity? the move away from objective underlying bases that express themselves as performances of identity, rather, that performance /is/ identity, that the underlying objectivity that it supposedly is grounded on is unstable, or maybe even doesnt exist. its an attack on essentialism which i like. what it means for me is that, when i am forced to cover up my own identity in order to 'conform' to societal expectations (and im sure u know that in the channels that i am moving now this is something i have to do) there really is no identity for me to protect - i am how i act, there is no underlying stable core. and thats upsetting to me, that i have to distort, maybe even destroy myself simply based on what others think of me because of my phenotype

i think a big fear i had was that the further u moved up the ladder in the academy the more things would be motivated not by the strength of what u wrote or argued but by mundane factors like prestige, departmental politics, money. so far i havent really seen anything that would argue against that

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)

if u really wanted to we could probably have nilmar choose a long-ish passage from foucault or bulter and we could submit competing 15 page papers on our interpretations of it, filled with complex qualifications and doubling backs and invocations of Lacan and Hegel. im not so far removed from the academy that i cant do that anymore, it can be fun sometimes. but on most days i prefer to read dune and watch action movies + bball tbh

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)

i think if you're going to form your shtick around identity politics, and you want to do it in an intelligent interesting way, you need to be willing to write paragraphs about lacan and hegel. if you just want to bitch at ppl bc you're angry about how americans treat ppl of chinese descent, that's not necessary, but realize that not everyone is going to love reading the rants.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:05 (twelve years ago)

well yeah of course, i dont think everybody loves reading paragraphs about lacan or hegel either

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:06 (twelve years ago)

the whole grad school author thing is a nonsequitur, i don't think the worst instances of tumblr.txt apologetics on ilx involve distractionary appeals to academic authority, more that they inflate the semiotic aspects of cultural hegemony at the expense of the material

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:08 (twelve years ago)

isn't that always the backdrop behind the omnipresent complaint that "i don't want to have to explain this to you" tho? - what is the thing presumably being explained? the assumed academic justification for the political maneuver.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

not to make a distractionary appeal to academic authority but I don't think "distractionary" is a word

i guess at one point, in college and maybe for a year after college, i was p invested in appearing smart, not just smart but smart, u know, can quote my theory, can talk about problematics, can really close read the shit out of something and show u all the unstability. but now i gotta make a living, which is a lame excuse i know, and also i guess it all felt kind of like a carousel, i never really arrived at anything that i was really invested in, other than some core truths abt perception and subjectivity, the phenomenal and the noumenal, and the myth of silenus. im comfortable with treating those as truths by the way and not things to be problematized further.

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

i know i dont have the greatest history of hearing things correctly on ilx, but i think its clear that the white dude says 'sour' pretty rhotic-ly, like, "sow-errr"; whereas the server says it in a non-rhotic way, "sow-ahh"; i know the server dude only says like 5 words total but its def there imo

^^ like de facto racial quotas at prestigious universities are much more interesting than this

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

pretty much the only reason i participate in ilx is bc it's a surrogate intellectual community post-graduate school (while i, too, try to earn a living). that's why this move to privilege studies bothers me so much. i feel like it erodes the value i get from ilx, either by silencing posters i think make intelligent contributions (like sanpaku, or contenderizer) or by turning interesting conversations into ongoing referendums on whether a particular object is racist or sexist.

it is p weird to discuss cultural inclusion while making first hand knowledge of unabridged theoretical texts a prerequisite, imo. to build on my enduring signature ilx schtick of standing up to defend ignorance, it seems like pedantic pulling up the ladder to the treehouse behaviour to me to deny the currency of naming authors as shorthand for certain broad sets of ideas; these things aren't binary & still exist (as ... texts) and influence varied, personal conclusions, at whatever level (repping here for the enriching effects of hours of considering just the title of against interpretation w/o ever reading it). demanding fluency or assuming ignorance is conversationally p limiting I think.

does this mean, not to overstate the face/off aspects of this contretemps, that mordy and dayo are approaching this from almost the same position of disenchantment with academe? that one finds a measured personal/political epiphany away from ~the game~ and is able to enlist ilx in the same struggle, while the other seeks to revivify the argumentative elements of the university in the informal setting of ilx but finds ilx becoming less and less disputatious?

you misunderstand my complaint. ppl can speak from any canon (or personal experience). my only complaint is when the theoretical texts are cited for authority w/out actually using the texts themselves. you don't necessarily need to do a close reading (tho it's appreciated) but namedropping butler and not following it up w/ anything butler actually said is the problem.

Mordy, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:31 (twelve years ago)

i think i also became disenchanted with the method of literary analysis that i see so presently used. i think it goes like this, that you read a text carefully, but u look for repetitions, rhymes, echoes in the text, u see that structurally an element is repeated here but slightly differently there, u begin to theorize about why. u start to think about the energies of the text, right, how certain themes or motes or ideas get repeated - but not the same way! - and how it builds on itself. u get excited. u see an individual struggle between pierre and an assailant get interspersed between chapters of troop movements at the crimea. u read that pierre all of a sudden notices his hand, he uses his hand, and maybe 5 chapters earlier there was a metaphor about how the russian army was like that of a fist. u get excited! u write about it. it gets saved in a word doc, or on ilx.com. a week goes by, what do u remember of it? what does anybody remember of it? time to die.

乒乓, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

just to add- it's not necessarily butler but this subtext that the entire discourse is already justified by a body of academic work that is alluded to but never itself discussed - "I don't have time to educate you." xp

Every few weeks I read an article about how a Chabad synagogue in the world, in France, in India, in Nigeria (!), in Cyprus, has either been attacked, or there's been an attempt to kill the people who pray there. I pray in a Chabad synagogue and people carry guns there because they are afraid that someone might come and kill them. This directly affects my life and yet I don't come on ilx and complain whenever I see something that seems vaguely anti-Semitic. Maybe the problem is that racist doesn't affect you enough.

anyways, to sum up the thread and my new schtick & to smooth over the rifts i will relate to u a parable

"How did I get here?" I exclaimed. It was a moderately large hall, lit by soft electric light, and I was walking along close to the walls. Although there were several doors, if one opened them one only found oneself standing in front of a dark, smooth rockface, scarcely a handbreadth beyond the threshold and extending vertically upwards and horizontally on both sides, seemingly without any end. Here was no way out. Only one door led into an adjoining room, the prospect there was more hopeful, but no less startling than that behind the other doors. One looked into a royal apartment, the prevailing colors were red and gold, there were several mirrors as high as the ceiling, and a large glass chandelier. But that was not all.

I do not have to go back again, the cell is burst open, I move, I feel my body.

thank u very much

i can tell u about how it works in america

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

i think oxford had fewer students of african/caribbean ancestry than it did pupils from about 20 elite schools

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

surprise?

contenderizer, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:19 (twelve years ago)

de facto quotas for asian americans can severely limit the opportunities for asian americans who are part of distinct ethnic subgroups that are separate from east asians or south asians. groups like cambodian americans, laotian americans, hmong americans have really different immigration patterns from other asian americans - in fact, iirc, almost all of them are refugees from the fallout of the vietnamese war. when they immigrated they were handled by the us government but in ways that were really... not opportune. i think 'smart' admissions departments probably have ways of allowing for diversity at this level through inferring from surnames, maybe, or maybe they have an open-ended ethnicity box or something. but i think in general it's really easy to look at a university's demographics and say "wow, 20% asian american? way overrepresented!" and move on.

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:19 (twelve years ago)

did i not start a thread on this?

the late great, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:20 (twelve years ago)

i mean there was something ridiculous like 10 afrocaribbean students in a single year compared to 30 people from eton or whatever

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:20 (twelve years ago)

yeah we did discuss it and the bias against east asians at ivies etc was prima facie clear iirc

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:21 (twelve years ago)

even within east asian and south asian communities there are huge gaps between those who are skilled professionals who migrated over during times of oppressive political climate or limited opportunity and those who are economic immigrants (i.e. from the coastal regions). it seemed that all the asian americans i knew at yale had parents who were doctors, scientists, researchers.

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:21 (twelve years ago)

xxp - I don't think the quotas work the same way now as they did back in the day where there were official quotas on the number of jewish students.

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Friday, 26 April 2013 00:22 (twelve years ago)

the landscape of asian in america changed dramatically after 1965 when the de facto ban on asian immigration was lifted by new federal legislation. coincidentally that's also around the time of the cultural revolution etc.

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:22 (twelve years ago)

no they're soft quotas, and they're not reachable by law at most private universities. but it's been statistically proven that asian americans have to score 100-150 higher on sats than a white student to get admitted

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:23 (twelve years ago)

white ppl r dumb

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Friday, 26 April 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

you're right though that the 'holistic' admissions process that lessened the focus on raw testing scores was implemented to keep the number of jewish students down

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

white people have other valuable things to offer universities, such as rich parents and lacrosse skills

iatee, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

it's been said that affirmative action or diversity concerns for underrepresented minorities takes away from spots for asian americans. that's not true. letting in more white kids takes away spots from deserving asian american students.

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:25 (twelve years ago)

and everybody else. except white kids.

well there is a quota for white kids, it's just a big quota

iatee, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:27 (twelve years ago)

yeah, we're not really taught to think of the admission of white kids as fulfilling a 'quota' - it's easier to assume that they got there by their merits & dedication to hard work & overcoming adversity

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:28 (twelve years ago)

you post about college stuff a lot

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Friday, 26 April 2013 00:32 (twelve years ago)

this is v much a disinterested view from afar so caveat lector but american elite private college admissions both historically and currently seem centred on creating an ideal type of student coterie rather than seriously addressing socioeconomic disparity, so they seek a platonically apt proportion of this or that subgroup (not just races but athletes, legacies, science bros etc)

hence the headline figure of black students which might seem quite 'reasonable', even if there are a lot of people like my friend (the scion of nigerian oil trader) who mostly idled through school in england while the chance of someone going from whichever deprived inner city suburb to columbia is still fairly remote

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:32 (twelve years ago)

also that guy in the commercial pronounced sour as "sow-wahh" whereas most americans pronounce sour as "sou-err"

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:32 (twelve years ago)

american elite private college admissions both historically and currently seem centred on creating an ideal type of student coterie rather than seriously addressing socioeconomic disparity, so they seek a platonically apt proportion of this or that subgroup (not just races but athletes, legacies, science bros etc)

"platonically apt proportion" = 'diversity.' don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of the concept but i acknowledge that we really only talk about this stuff in terms of 'diversity' because we're no longer allowed to think about racial make-up in terms of remediation for past historical discrimination and continuing structural discrimination that still exists

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:35 (twelve years ago)

the concept of diversity was iirc pioneered by harvard and other elite colleges in the 80s when it looked like racial quotas were not gonna be upheld by courts? i dunno if the ivy league ever practiced *real* affirmative action in their admissions.

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:36 (twelve years ago)

it tends to just end up being mostly upper and upper-middle class kids of whatever racial background -- like when I went to college and realized how many of my classmates' parents were professors, all I could think of was "reproducing the means of production"

You must be very cold in the sack. (sarahell), Friday, 26 April 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

it's not in their economic interests to practice real affirmative action, it is good pr to practice a tiny bit

iatee, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

sow-ahhhh. sow-errrrr.

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

that is p much what 'diversity' means to white ppl, a heuristic to solve the aesthetic affront of having 100% white people, which might be predicated to some degree on guilt but isn't essentially about justice

乒乓, Friday, 26 April 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)

i mean, maybe its wrong to think about the west as being about the history of white supremacy that was practiced in some parts of the west as recently as 1988, a white supremacy that still finds itself embedded and fossilized in state policy and socioeconomic armatures that have carried on to this day, unconsciously and without agency but the effects are still there. maybe that's the wrong way to think about things. but a lot of things make sense 2 me now

though i've learned certain lessons along the way, i still feel pretty much exactly as i always have about most of this stuff. i'm more interested in discussion and argument for the sake of the ideas involved than i am in moralistic political positioning. i find ILX's hostility to dissent somewhat depressing, though i do enjoy the resulting dearth of outright idiocy. i don't regret the unpopular stances i've taken from time to time (and will likely take again). i am not sorry i said anything.

Dudes, I love y’all and I'm a huge fan of ILX whether I’m posting here or not, but seriously. This has become massively fractal and out of control.

I’m not a sock puppet. If you don’t believe me, do a search for “three handclaps,” which was the username I posted under here back in Fall 2007 when I was a junior in college. There’s a thread I started about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and several threads about rock criticism, the same kind of stuff I post about today. I eventually took a break from the board and lurked for over a year, returning to post as “kshighway” earlier this summer. Many people started to criticize me for unironically, enthusiastically posting about indie rock and other related topics; while I understand that attitude, I find it difficult to believe that the people who were knocking on me couldn’t conceive of the fact that a 22 year old who had just graduated from college had a taste in music that adhered to the indie canon. (I also started topics on ILE such as Living in a City without a Car: Classic or Dud and S/D: Contemporary Continental Philosophy. Why someone would sign up for a message board and start both of those threads as a joke makes no sense to me. Anyway.)

In early September, I decided I was spending too much time here and not getting enough out of it anymore, and like many before me I quit the board. I changed my password to a set of random characters so I wouldn’t be tempted to log back in again, and I stopped reading the boards completely. I eventually started to lurk again, following my P2k thread among others. I saw people start to mention my username, and I decided I wanted to come back and start posting here. Apparently electricsound denied my registration request for “kshighway1” because he thought I was someone else trying to impersonate me; that makes sense considering the circumstances. I wasn’t sure if something was wrong or not since I wasn’t receiving a confirmation email, but I persisted in signing up, someone eventually accepted my registration, and here I am again.

I would really appreciate it if people would back off on the whole sock puppet thing and let me post. I’m as tired of all the meta-bellyaching as many of you must be, and I’d rather focus on doing my best to contribute to threads concerning stuff I’m excited about from now on rather than answering unprovoked attacks.

Thanks everybody.

silby, Monday, 11 May 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

it is p weird to discuss cultural inclusion while making first hand knowledge of unabridged theoretical texts a prerequisite, imo. to build on my enduring signature ilx schtick of standing up to defend ignorance, it seems like pedantic pulling up the ladder to the treehouse behaviour to me to deny the currency of naming authors as shorthand for certain broad sets of ideas; these things aren't binary & still exist (as ... texts) and influence varied, personal conclusions, at whatever level (repping here for the enriching effects of hours of considering just the title of against interpretation w/o ever reading it). demanding fluency or assuming ignorance is conversationally p limiting I think.

does this mean, not to overstate the face/off aspects of this contretemps, that mordy and dayo are approaching this from almost the same position of disenchantment with academe? that one finds a measured personal/political epiphany away from ~the game~ and is able to enlist ilx in the same struggle, while the other seeks to revivify the argumentative elements of the university in the informal setting of ilx but finds ilx becoming less and less disputatious?

- adorno

imago, Monday, 11 May 2020 17:16 (five years ago)

I've never read Adorno but I think I have a pretty good idea about what he was on about.

silby, Monday, 11 May 2020 17:16 (five years ago)

schlumps point there comes across out of context as maybe defending that, in context i think i read it as more of a criticism of namedropping these authors and writings as a method of claiming a discussion is closed or w/e anyways

spruce springclean (darraghmac), Monday, 11 May 2020 17:47 (five years ago)

plagiarism is good, namedropping is a courtesy

xp silby -- sorry you should stfu about everything except computer programming until you have read Adorno, whose writings I wrote essays about at the Ivy League university I attended and graduated from btw.
