I recognized Cramer's name, but had to refresh my memory on who he was--I read his DiMaggio book. There was all this controversy at the time, but it seemed believable and fair to me. (About the most scandalous revelation that I remember was DiMaggio's cheapness.) Unsettling scene of DiMaggio's agent getting him to sign stuff while on his deathbed.

Donald Byrd Dead: Legendary Jazz Musician Dies At Age 80Posted: 02/07/2013 5:01 pm EST | Updated: 02/07/2013 5:07 pm EST
Legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd died earlier this week at the age of 80, but news of his death was only just confirmed.
Amoeba reports that Byrd's nephew, Alex Bugnon, confirmed via Facebook that his uncle died on Feb. 4, adding that for an unexplained reason other family members were trying to keep the news of his death private.
"I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family," wrote Bugnon.

They indulged in the mechanics of ostentation — they deserved me and I deserved them. If I rob Ivana Trump, it is just a meeting of two different kinds of degeneracy on a dark rooftop.”

Motown songwriter-producer Deke Richards has died at a Bellingham, Wash., hospice at age 68.
Peace Health St. Joseph Medical Center spokeswoman Amy Cloud confirms that Richards, whose real name was Dennis Lussier, died Sunday at the Whatcom Hospice House.
A statement from Universal Music said Richards had been battling esophageal cancer.
Universal Music says that as leader of the Motown songwriting, arranging and producing team known as The Corporation, Richards was involved in writing and producing many Jackson 5 hits. Those songs included the Jackson 5's first three No. 1 hits - "I Want You Back," ''ABC," and "The Love You Save."
He also co-wrote "Love Child" for Diana Ross & The Supremes, as well Ross' solo "I'm Still Waiting."

NOT the singer. But probably someone more important:
http://www.gollancz.co.uk/2013/03/in-memory-of-paul-williams/
In the wider realm of popular culture, you should honour him as the founding father of rock journalism. The magazine he founded as a 17-year-old college student in 1966, Crawdaddy!, was the first publication to focus on serious writing about the then-new music. It launched the career of writers such as Jon Landau (who went on to become Bruce Springsteen’s manager), Sandy Pearlman, and Richard Meltzer. It was the inspiration for subsequent magazines, notably Rolling Stone. Paul wrote many books about music, and particularly about Bob Dylan. As an sf reader, which I assume you probably are, you should honour him as one of the two principal figures who kept the name of Philip K. Dick alive in the decades following his death. Paul was a close friend of Dick’s, and his 1975 Rolling Stone article “The True Stories of Philip K. Dick” was the most significant piece of writing about him published during his lifetime. (It later formed the basis of a book, Only Apparently Real, which was in turn the first book about Dick.) When Dick died in 1982, Paul was named his Literary Executor, and he worked tirelessly in conjunction with Dick’s long-time literary agent Russ Galen (the other hero of this story) to keep his name alive. Paul founded and ran the Philip K. Dick Society, which attracted hundreds of members in scores of countries. The small publishing company he ran together with David Hartwell published Dick’s novel Confessions of a Crap Artist – the first time any of Dick’s non-sf novels from the 1950s saw the light of day.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/04/14/3344354/rock-and-soul-songwriter-george.html
JACKSON, Miss. -- Songwriter George Jackson, co-author of "Old Time Rock and Roll" and hundreds of other soul, rock and rhythm and blues tunes, has died. He was 68.
Jackson died Sunday morning at his home in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, said Thomas Couch Sr., board chairman of Malaco Records. Jackson had been sick with cancer for about a year.
"It was not unexpected, but it's always too soon," Couch said.
Born in Indianola, Miss., Jackson was writing songs by the time he was in his teens. It was Ike Turner who brought Jackson to New Orleans R&B pioneer Cosimo Matassa's studio in 1963, where he recorded his first song.
Jackson recorded dozens of singles in the 1960s and worked in Memphis, Tenn., but made his mark as a writer, beginning with FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. He later was a songwriter for crosstown rival Muscle Shoals Sound Studios before returning to Memphis. When Malaco bought Muscle Shoals Sound, it hired Jackson to write songs, said Wolf Stephenson, Malaco's vice president and chief engineer.
"George had hooks coming out of his ears," Stephenson said. "They weren't all hits, but I never heard him write a bad song. He never really got the recognition that's normally due a writer of his stature."
The Osmonds recorded Jackson's "One Bad Apple" in 1970, taking it to No. 1. Jackson and Thomas Jones III wrote "Old Time Rock and Roll," which Bob Seger recorded in 1978.
Stephenson said "Old Time Rock and Roll" is truly Jackson's song, and he has the tapes to prove it, despite Seger's claims that he altered it.

Best part is
Before their revolutionary work was published, Dr. Appel and Dr. Haken enlisted their entire families to check hundreds of pages of calculations, making sure that diagrams of map configurations matched the computer printouts and did not have typos. Andrew Appel said his sister, Laurel, found some 800 mistakes, most of which she could fix herself.

Not famous, but Greg Quill, a Toronto music writer:
http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/05/05/toronto_star_entertainment_columnist_greg_quill_dies.html
Don't think I ever met him, but we probably reviewed some of the same shows in the '80s, and Wikipedia says he once edited a magazine I wrote for (unless he did that at the very beginning of the magazine's existence, I think that's probably incorrect). He's the first local music writer I can recall dying, so sobering.

I saw the Dells live in 2005 and Marvin Junior's vocals on some cuts were just still chin-dropping great (years after the group's prime). The Rev. Will D. Campbell, a renegade preacher and author who joined the civil rights struggle in the 1950s, quit organized religion and fought injustice with nonviolent protests and a storyteller’s arsenal of autobiographical tales and fictional histories, died on Monday night in Nashville. He was 88.
Mr. Campbell was the only white person invited by Dr. King to the founding of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta in 1957. Months later, Mr. Campbell helped escort nine black students through angry crowds in an attempt to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Ark.

I'd say so, but with a grain of salt, as it was a show that probably would have benefited from shorter, cable-style seasons. There's a fair number of filler episodes. Another issue, although in some respects minor, is that they've never been able to get new clearances for the music on the dvds, so occasionally you get some distracting poorly done period library music in place of a good oldie.
BTW, the Mafia case they used as inspiration for the main arc of the series is the same one from Casino.
― Uncle Cyril O'Boogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 22 July 2013 19:51 (eleven years ago)
uncle cob otm about crime story, it was pretty great at the time and still worth watching (esp if you love mann obv) but it hasn't aged fantastically. somehow wiseguy and miami vice have probably aged better despite (or due to probably) a relative lack of ambition. farina was great in it obv and great in a ton of other things. least surprising 'he used to be a cop' ever. neat story from the av club writeup: In the meantime, Farina starred as the hardboiled Kennedy-era supercop Mike Torello in Mann’s TV series Crime Story, an ambitious tribute to early ‘60s fashions, longform pulp storytelling, violent male one-upmanship, tail fins, and Chicago architecture, at least until the action shifted to Las Vegas toward the end of the first of its two seasons. The series gave him the chance to work again with actor John Santucci, a former jewel thief who had also worked as a technical advisor on Thief. In an earlier life, Farina had once arrested him.

RIP Virginia Johnson, 1960s sex researcher
Working with an initial group of 694 volunteers — 382 men and 312 women — Masters and Johnson hooked subjects up to instruments that recorded heart rate, brain activity and metabolism as they copulated or masturbated. Using a tiny camera placed in an artificial phallus, they were able to capture direct evidence, previously unseen, of what happens inside the vagina during female sexual arousal.Among their findings were these:■ Contrary to popular belief, there was absolutely no difference between a vaginal orgasm (the good kind, according to Freud) and a clitoral orgasm (the bad kind).■ The length of a man’s penis has no bearing on his ability to satisfy his partner.■ For elderly people, a group long considered sexually demure if not altogether chaste, vigorous sexual activity was not only possible but normal.

ok, how 'bout
The political left, they deal in symbols rather than reality. The general difference between conservatives and liberals is that liberals like pretty pictures and conservatives like to build bridges that people can drive across. And conservatives are indeed conservative because if the bridge falls down then people die, whereas the liberals figure, we can always build a nice memorial and make people forget it ever happened and was our fault. They're very good at making people forget it was their fault. Allright? The CIA was gutted by people on the political left who don't like Intelligence operations... and as a result of that, as an indirect result of that, we lost 5,000 citizens last week. (Sept. 21, 2001)

Richard Coughlan, drummer for Caravan, on Dec 1.
From the Caravan facebook page:It is with a very heavy heart that we announce that Richard Coughlan passed away on Sunday 1st December. Richard was a founder member and drummer for Caravan for over forty three years. Richard died at his home and had been in poor health for the last few years. He has played on all of the band’s releases to date and was one of the early birds in the history of the Canterbury bands having sessioned with The Wilde Flowers and predecessors. Despite not being well Richard played percussion at Caravan’s reunion gig in London in December 2010 and received a standing ovation. His unique style of playing and wonderful character will be sorely missed. We pass our sincere sympathies to Richard’s wife Sue, his daughter Beth, and all his family. We will publish a fuller obituary in due course and will have a book of condolences on the website so that his friends and fans can leave a message. Richard was 66 years old May he Rest in Peace.

Joe Bihari, 88, the co-founder of a family record company that exposed blues performers such as B.B. King, Little Richard, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and Etta James to a wider audience, died Nov. 28 in a Los Angeles hospital, family members said."The Biharis had one of the most important companies in the history of rhythm and blues," said Jim O'Neal, founding editor of Living Blues magazine, "and Joe was the one who produced most of the sessions."O'Neal said the family's labels, including Modern Records and RPM, inspired other companies "to go looking for down-home blues."
