When Did Old-School ILX End and New-School ILX Begin?

Message Bookmarked

using the ILX search function, i noticed that the first mention of "old-school ILX" was made in April 2003 (by bona-fide old-school ILXor Strongo). that seems a little TOO early though ... i'd put April 2003 firmly in the "old school" camp.

but when did this magical change occur exactly?

when ilx was first invented, you used to have to put a shovel of coal into your computer five times a day, or anytime you wanted to refresh new answers. in 2001, we all pooled our coal together and created a zing!

just as there's an argument that most genuine evolution in music stems from technology (electrification, the keyboard, the sampler, etc), this logic does seem to applicable to ilx - youtubes, the coding toys of jw, the s-ban

when i was saying good night to rufus last night i told him that sometimes i felt weird because it didn't feel like i was living in the present and that instead it felt like i was living in his past because so much time is spent later in life thinking about childhood and the dim memories you have of your weird father telling you strange things when you are trying to fall asleep.

banning dom and ethan was pretty much the end of ILX's first golden era, and the beginning of our neverending nightmare of polling AcclaimedMusic.com lists, penning unnecessarily long "wacky" thread titles, and basically sitting around the campfire making smores and singing cassie songs

vagina the escape G.O.A.T. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 26 January 2013 18:01 (twelve years ago)

Two of the bigger ilx turning points I can recall:

* the advent of real user registration: no longer could anyone log in with any name at any time, and the (unverified and often false) email address associated with a poster's login name disappeared at the same time and 'display names' were added soon after. This allowed users to sort out who was in the pig pile.

* the introduction of the suggest ban and the tightening of moderation: ilx became less like the wild west and more like post-homesteading era; shit-stirring for its own sake dwindled down to a mere shadow and vestige of its once-mighty presence.

founders of ilx are mainly long-gone to lj and tumblr. serious old ilx was v. small and friendly and discursive -- the rise of zing culture was arguably the first big shift. at a certain point i lost track of most people and i never really figured it out again.

xpost yeah the rise of comedy anon display names all around was probably a good marker of when we went from a small community to a place where ppl actually cared about protecting their identity -- also probably tied to, basically, the internet happening all around us. at this point ilx is probably one of the longest-lived online communities around. weird.

btw just for anyone who is finding this thread boring because all the events referred to predate their tenure, just jump in & start posting about events that never happened; people will assume you were here before them & eventually your hasty hairbrained apocrypha will be absorbed into ilx lore. talk about when judas got 51'd; about the time a guy harvested ilx threads & sold their stories as a treatment for a never made movie; about the era when ilx happened like a telephone chatline, & you could call in through a couple hour window early every weekday morning & talk to other people who'd dialed in to talk shit about guitar bands.

bookmarks probably had a huge impact on the board. probably more posting than ever, but less ppl paying attention to the top of new answers vs. sticking to their particular threads of interest. probably a good thing.

there's a notion now of like "if you think this show is terrible maybe find a different thread" and in the old days it would have been "board democracy! every thread is for a debate if something is great or terrible!" whereas now there's a sense that maybe if you don't click with a particular set of attitudes, or tastes, or w/e, then maybe just don't read that thread, and this isn't being not true to your "opinions" or whathaveyou, but instead just being polite and reasonable.

Somewhere there's a bizarro universe where we're all still fiercely debating whether Chairman Meow is the best cat name or not - balkanised rolling threads with inter-warring factions, EOY polls based on cat names and variations on the spelling of "MEOW", many posters who are actually anti-cat name, etc...

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 28 January 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

Personally I can remember joking about “nu-ilx” when I met NickB, and Julio I think, at the Slint gig in 2004, but I think it had been a thing people had talked about for at least a year or so.

Guess papers = threads started by randomly googling students asking for exam papers in broken English. Cue ilx0rs trying to incite more of this sort of thing.

Tittwis = "this is the thread where I say..." - usually rolling chatter threads that were overly pleasant for the zing crew, I believe.

emil.y, Monday, 28 January 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

tittwis was basically the same thing as "seriously though, what's happening with our board right now?"

Why they hide the bodice under décolletage? (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Monday, 28 January 2013 22:37 (twelve years ago)

guess papers are sample exams for public schools in India and Pakistan. back when the sub-boards allowed unregistered users, hundreds of random googler schoolkids flocked to IRE every winter and begged for free guess papers, and the IRE crew played along with it for teh lulz. all you really need to know about them is IM GEETIKA.

I've always looked at the December 2006 - February 2007 exile in the sandbox, followed by stet/Keith's nu-code rollout as the single dividing line between old/nu.

sub-board mods immediately became less powerful, while sub-boards simultaneously became more visible (via SNA), followed by things like mandatory registration, polls, SB, and 77.

everything else (posters, memes, clusterfucks) are just points on a continuum

Old school ILX ended when sub-boards became a thing in the first place. Or when we moved over from Greenspun.

Matt DC, Monday, 28 January 2013 22:59 (twelve years ago)

Actually I'd say that old-school ILX probably runs up until about 2004 and the creation of the Noize Board. There was a real marked tonal shift at that point. Middle period ILX is probably up until the new code in early 2008. Since then it's broadly felt like same place with the same group of posters, but they feel like three distinct eras.

GUess papers was a thing on one subboard about six people went on and no one else was involved with, I dont get how it is even remotely a big ilx "thing". Random googlers generally, sure. But to pluck that out you might as well do the same for hairdye advice or Dave Matthews.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 28 January 2013 23:12 (twelve years ago)

there was something very specific about guess papers to 2005-2006 Internet in general though; where an unused thread on an abandoned board populated by people from English speaking countries suddenly made it to the front page of results for a term being searched by high school students in India and Pakistan.

it may have just been an in-joke for the IRE crew but it definitely spoke volumes on where ILX sat in relation the the rest of the Internet at large at that time

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Monday, 28 January 2013 23:18 (twelve years ago)

wasn't the hairdye advice thing the same though? one thread coming up in searches over and over again.

bantz a make her dance (c sharp major), Monday, 28 January 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)

Actually I'd say that old-school ILX probably runs up until about 2004 and the creation of the Noize Board. There was a real marked tonal shift at that point.

OTM.

It's actually not just "zing culture" but the creation of a space on ILX with an ethos that felt significantly different from, and often antithetical to, the rest of the site. There were subboards before Noise -- I Love Books, Film, and maybe even Baseball predated it (probably others, too) -- but they felt more like natural outgrowths of the site as it was, with ILM as the existing model for specialized conversations. In its early days, the subtext coming from the Noise Board was that the space was, in fact, superior to the rest of ILX. If old-school ILX had a decidedly British slant, with even the Americans at least somewhat Anglophilic, the Noise Board was not only NYC-focused by default but those American Anglophiles were actively sneered at. I'm sure there's been a certain amount of cliquishness on ILX since day one, but the Noise Board was the first time I felt like, "Do I even belong here?"

These days, I think the existence of different ILX "crews," with different sensibilities and values, is taken for granted. And it's not necessarily a bad thing, either. Even though I did have some negative experiences with the Noise Board in its infancy, I ultimately like a lot of what it brought to ILX and don't know that I'd want to return to the days before it.
