an exquisite video in which oblivious shitbag robert scoble (a) thinks everyone should like having a video camera pointed at their face (b) writes off tacit discomfort as people not magically understanding how this thing works (c) carries on with some ridiculous utopian bullshit of everyone bolting one of these things to their head (d) wears this thing when he's HAVING A SLASH AT A URINAL (e) blithely glosses over very real privacy concerns and (f) constantly CONSTANTLY interrupts the interviewer

never thought i'd see a "technology evangelist" answer a question about whether or not his cyberglasses might one day include a cell phone with "no -- because of battery life, weight, and cost." oh you mean the three things in tech that do nothing but go down.
― the white queen and her caustic judgments (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:39 (twelve years ago)
except for battery life i mean that goes up
other than that the high point's prob when the other guy says that people might not like having cameras maybe-or-maybe-not pointed at them in the street and the longhorn evangelist explains, twice, like he wasn't understood the first time, that in america it is legal to take pictures of anyone you want in the street and "you can't do shit about it"
― the white queen and her caustic judgments (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:42 (twelve years ago)
otm, the man's clearly got no idea about technology as well as social conventions (or was just being an obstructionist dick)
and the longhorn evangelist explains, twice, like he wasn't understood the first time, that in america it is legal to take pictures of anyone you want in the street and "you can't do shit about it"
add to that the incredibly loud body language of the interviewer (how he didn't whack scoble right there on the stage i don't know) and the whole thing would be an hilarious farce if scoble weren't a real person
― great wallogina (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 May 2013 12:57 (twelve years ago)
his point was clearly that most people won't talk to anyone with a video camera strapped to their face, indicator light or otherwise. i straight up won't go near anyone with a spycam strapped to their face. you want to speak to me? remove your dorkpants video camera or fuck you, no third option.

also this covers a lot of the admirably idealist but still thoroughly misguided ui bullshit around ~being~ the interface for google glass
Designers at Fjord speculate that these kinds of body-based micro-interactions are the future of interface design. “Why swipe your arm when you can just rub your fingers together,” they write. “What could be more natural than staring at something to select it, nodding to approve something?… For privacy, you’ll be able to use imperceptible movements, or even hidden ones such as flicking your tongue across your teeth.”

The first drafts of “Super Sad” had a technology called The Eye, which was basically an äppärät inside a contact lens. My editor suggested that it was a little much, and it certainly was in 2008, at a time when even the first iterations of the iPhone seemed like they were beamed back to our world from some glorious future civilization in Cupertino. By 2013, having a miniature screen above my right eye tell me all about “Ashton Kutcher’s new job” feels about right.

It turns out she was taunting people by calling them names and being a drunk asshole while she was recording the entire confrontation.
She also has been served two restraining orders in the past few years: the first from her own mother (!) for violence, and the second by her neighbors for recording them without their consent on her phone.

Jason McDonald, an Internet marketing consultant at JM Internet Group in San Jose, said Slocum's emergence comes as the public is looking for something tangible to latch onto in the debate over Glass."People are quick to condemn the person, or come to a person's defense, because they really hit a nerve on an issue," McDonald said. "In this case, she's become a flash point. She's like the guy in font of the tank at Tiananmen Square."

i don't understand how google glass is supposed to work, beyond it being an easier way to use, say, a gps, or as a convenient means of getting quick answers read back to you, in lieu of a google search where you stare at a monitor and operate a keyboard. but, if i want to read a newspaper or research a topic or play a game online, google glass isn't helpful at all, is it? it seems too close to your face to have any useful visual display applications.

Happy to live in a small town where I'm not likely to meet anyone wearing these in a good long while yet.
Are there any good articles about what in the above-linked article is referred to as "the anti-tech fervor" in SF? That's the side of these recent stories that has struck me as most interesting. I gather it's in large part about how lots of rich technology workers have made the city more expensive and difficult to lie in for everyone else. Would love to see read more about that and about what other sides there are to the hostility.

It sounds like ultimately this might really be the fault of a (maybe?) bad policy rather than the geeks, since they had in fact reserved the field through the city, but perhaps the introduction of a reservation system represents the encroachment of gentrification in an uncomfortable way.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/11/20959066/apple-augmented-reality-ar-headset-glasses-rumors-reported-release-date
Apple plans to release its first augmented reality headset in 2022, followed by a smaller device — a pair of AR glasses — in 2023, according to a new report from The Information.Apple’s entry into the world of augmented reality has long been rumored, with many in the tech world seeing AR and VR as the next big platforms after mobile. But an exact entry date has been unclear, with some analysts suggesting a 2020 launch. Citing internal presentations made at Apple’s headquarters, The Information pushes this rumored timeline back to 2022, presumably due to difficulties in developing the technology. As well as the new timeline, The Information’s report offers new detail about Apple’s AR headset, codenamed N301. The device supposedly resembles a slimmer version of the Oculus Quest, a virtual reality headset released in May. It has AR and VR capabilities, uses external cameras to map the user’s surroundings (including the outlines of people, furniture, and rooms), and has a high-resolution display to show information and blend virtual objects with the real world. Employees were told that the company would be reaching out to developers to build software for the headset from 2021.After Apple has built this larger headset it plans to release a smaller pair of AR glasses. Unlike the headset, these will be designed to be worn for longer periods of time, with The Information reporting that “current prototypes look like high-priced sunglasses with thick frames that house the battery and chips,” according to a person who has seen prototypes. Apple has also reportedly explored lenses that darken when in operation, to signal to observers that the user is otherwise occupied.
