AG = Algerian Goalkeeper? Yeah, that dude only likes white music.

As loathe as I am to stand up for his poll-running practices, he actually has a pretty healthy knowledge of large swaths of jazz and loves funk music deep down. The reason that poll is so exclusionary and focused on basically "white music" is that he feels like ILM mostly covers stuff that isn't that (and Tuomas has a disco poll coming down the pipeline).

to answer the question in the OP: it is because ilm posters can start any poll they damn well please and the mods aren't such dicks as to censor a rockist poll just because it is rockist. they have better ways to spend their time.

:C (crüt), Thursday, 28 February 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

got to admit I'm a bit confused by a poll that covers mainstream rock as long as it is "hard and heavy", rock which isn't heavy as long as it's weird and not mainstream, and funk but only if it's not disco-related, and nothing in between - even if it's by an artist whose other albums meet these fairly arbitrary requirements

also suspecting that if this is the stuff that AG feels doesn't get enough Best 70s Ever love, not just in general but even in the previous ILM Alternative 70s poll, then one of these disparate strands may get short shrift here too and need yet another confusingly delineated poll

but hey, other people clearly get it as they've nominated and voted and such, and AG is a good guy and interesting stuff was nominated so I expect the results will be p. cool despite my confusion (or even because of it)

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)

well in fairness this is good evidence of a problem! though accurately locating the problem is the trick.

is it in the political economy of music-making in the 70s? or in that of "music remembering" in the '10s? in ILM? or in... algerian goalkeeper himself.

i mean, i'd pick a couple of those to examine. but who did our brave interlocutor go after...

goole, Thursday, 28 February 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

if people dont want to nominate then I can hardly force them. I do not know why most nominate male artists. That seems to be a general problem on ilx and I daresay music crits/media in general. Look at all lists. By having open limitless voting I provide the chance for everything to be nominated. I cant help what is nominated or not.
I just nominated as much funk as I could!

got to admit I'm a bit confused by a poll that covers mainstream rock as long as it is "hard and heavy", rock which isn't heavy as long as it's weird and not mainstream, and funk but only if it's not disco-related, and nothing in between - even if it's by an artist whose other albums meet these fairly arbitrary requirements

also suspecting that if this is the stuff that AG feels doesn't get enough Best 70s Ever love, not just in general but even in the previous ILM Alternative 70s poll, then one of these disparate strands may get short shrift here too and need yet another confusingly delineated poll

this is otm. i have no problem with people having idiosyncratic personal canons but, like, chuck eddy just makes his own lists, he doesn't spend months and months corralling as many people as he can to play within the boundaries of 'metal' that only he understands. it's this weird mix of wanting others to participate while also wanting complete control over the boundaries that makes these AG polls kind of obnoxious and in a pretty different spirit than other fun silly ilm polls imo.

it's this weird mix of wanting others to participate while also wanting complete control over the boundaries that makes these AG polls kind of obnoxious and in a pretty different spirit than other fun silly ilm polls imo.

I don't know, the arbitrary boundaries are themselves pretty silly which I think does make it a little more fun than most ilm polls. but I'm not going to vote because the nominating, discussion and listmaking are what's fun to me. I think it's weird that people get worked up because it's a poll. If it were the rolling "post heavy, weird, funky '70s shit that rolling stone hates" thread nobody would complain. But because it's a poll it's somehow serious business?

wk, Friday, 1 March 2013 02:33 (twelve years ago)

I think the spirit of this poll is very positive and not really all that hard to understand. The boundaries established are to make sure that the overall results are "rockin" but also include stuff left out of the 'traditional' 70s rock cannon. I think such a poll has been done before but I didn't get to take part in it so I really DGAF if its being re-done or whatever.

Also I am pretty into lists and polls and that might be seen as disgusting or whatever by some other people but again, IDGAF.

Vote in BOTH ILM 70s polls please! (Viceroy), Friday, 1 March 2013 02:35 (twelve years ago)

i guess i don't understand the point of drawing up all these complex ideas about what to include/exclude. i mean, ballpark figure, what % of the 200 albums that placed in the two previous '70s polls are eligible for this one? it's gotta be a pretty large amount, right? what's the point? it's not like those lists were overrun with R&B anyway. it's all a little "white history month" to constantly be protesting that ILM doesn't like rock music enough and we have to come up with special ways to recognize it.

I think any poll that attempts to be anti-canon should first define the canon (collect a bunch of lists like the above) and then disqualify all of the artists that are part of that canon. My only problem with AG's poll is that it's too inclusive and the nominations ended up including a ton of canonical stuff.

wk, Friday, 1 March 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)

There were conflicting goals imo: polling an aesthetic (albums that rock) vs being somehow anti-canonical or anti-RS.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 1 March 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

so we compromised. And with 1000+ nominations nobody has had any problem making ballots. Out of 56 album ballots so far more than half have filled out all 100 places.

Pretty good going and I think a lot of people have had fun checking out unknown albums to them. And hopefully more will do the same when the rollout begins.
The length of voting was decided due to seandalai being too busy to do tabulating (also why the big ILM EOY poll had to be completed early).

Seandalai is the only reason these polls can be done. So we need to do it when it suits him. I for one are thankful he volunteers his services.

As for nominations "missing" why not take part in them?
And if you think the results wont be to your liking then vote and improve them.

And this is how the rules were set up for the trax poll

tracks sister to 1970-1979 WTF - The Hard 'n' Heavy 'n' Loud + Krautrock, Arty, Noisy, Weird, Funky, Punky Shit - Albums Poll! Nominations ! (ends Oct 17 you slack bastards - jjjusten edit)). as i explained there - i'm really hoping to see alot of tracks that would qualify from artists/albums that really don't qualify for albums poll (not restricting it to that mind you, you can still vote for 'supernaut' don't worry, just saying if you wanted to nominate goodbye yellow brick road on the basis that some of it really does rawk well it's gonna get vetoed here i bet but in tracks poll 'all the girls love alice' and 'saturday's alright for fighting' could totally get in). also for big canonical artists ag has quarantined - stones bowie floyd boss - i will consider only tracks/singles NOT on those albums listed above and tbh for springsteen you're gonna have to remind me what tracks could possibly qualify. i'll be fairly catholic there and esp friendly to hard rock moves/gestures by not normally rocking artists. so if ag vetoes it cherrypick the most shredding cut and it probably makes my poll. i guarantee you somebody maybe even you will suggest something i'm unfamiliar w/ so if this is the case (maybe it's a record some huns recorded or by some other ppl that don't even speak english) and i go 'wuh?' at a suggestion it would awesome if you have a spotify or youtube link or someone somewhere describing it in terms that suggest it qualifies. also when voting comes there will be some voting limits of sorts put in place, not as restrictive as album poll but you will not be able to submit yr top 100 aerosmith tracks nor for that matter have a ballot that has peter criss tracks at 1-10 and then fills out the rest of the ballot w/ whatever. so nominate accordingly i guess. nominations close on october 17th 2012, midnight, eastern standard time.

ALSO, URGENT + KEY:

LIST YR NOMINATION IN THIS FORMAT PLZ

Artist - "Rock Song Title"

I was on board with excluding albums. AG didn't know where the line could be drawn. The top 50 from the last two 70s polls and the Rolling Stone top 50 could have worked, but I didn't feel strongly enough to push it. I'm pretty confident the results of this poll will be pretty unique. I'm focusing on the heavy rock aspect on my ballot, but German space rock, funk and Fela, why the hell not!

y'know I never understood AG's idiosyncratic control freak approach until the 80s hard rock poll. I'm not a huge poll fan but I was mentally invested in that time period so I took part, and tho I can't logically justify his means I also can't argue with the results. they were weird and surprising and the rollout was a lot of fun, and some of his outlandish decisions really paid off (e.g. the massive number of albums in the rollout).

the 70s one has suffered from fits & starts & scattered focus but I'm looking forward to the rollout. yeah AG can get eye-rollingly overheated about this stuff and the beserker spamazon poll promotion is over the top, but he reminds me of another patience-straining super-enthusiastic poster who unfortunately is no longer with us, a guy whose contributions I regret dissing and dismissing while he was still around. AG's heart's in the right place and he does these polls out of 100% love for the music. I'm not gonna say his mind's in the right place but hey those of us without sin can cast the first rolling stone.

and this poll was actually a bunch of people. balls,myself,sund4r,edward and hellhouse who got together to decide the parameters.

There were conflicting goals imo: polling an aesthetic (albums that rock) vs being somehow anti-canonical or anti-RS.

I see that I’ve been summoned back into what has apparently morphed into Meltdown Telethon of Hitler-Based Rockism v5.0, so I thought I’d hit a few of the poll’s historical highlights on what is now the fifth thread dedicated to this particular punishment channel.

the original idea was to run a 70s version of the recent 80s poll, but the concept hit the wall p. quickly b/c while a lot of the best hard rock in the 80s came from yet-to-be-canonized and generally unpolled underground/alt. sources, rock or "rock" or shit that rawks in the 70s had already been heavily polled and was also scattered across a blurred landscape of criss-crossing genres with unstable boundaries between known and occult artists. my .02 was to run a cracked anti-poll that 1) ditched disco, AOR, singer-songwriter shlock, prog and chart pop, 2) extended back to '67 to pick up Beefheart, VU, Silver Apples, garage rock, &c in a wide-angle birth-of-horrible-noise bit of historical framing, and 3) concentrated on a deliberately skewed stew of punk, postpunk, no wave, krautrock, funk, psych, minimalism and art rock/industrial (Residents, Cabaret Voltaire, Yoko, etc). there was even ~crazytalk~ of throwing out Sabbath, Stooges, Zep and Stones to give the anti-poll notion teeth, but this idea survived only in the symbolic Stones one-rec nom and in the labyrinthian rules intended to limit people from cramming their ballots w/ stuffed-trouser stomp. a number of the above ideas were discarded 'cause they were pragmatically unworkable or w/e, and over the course of four threads -

- AG revamped the poll about fifteen times to the point where now itt he’s all “yeah, vote f/Styx + Judy Collins, IDGAF just vote”, but in fairness this poll has weathered numerous setbacks and is still going so more power to him, 'cause it's really all his poll at this point (I agree w/Sund4r that AG and Balls both had the final word on the poll's parameters).

AG, I’ll prob. still do a ballot btw even though as EIII mentioned I’m crushed f/time these days (must.vote.for.Red.Transistor).

But I cant do these polls on my own. the 80s poll was 100% me and i could stick to the vision but it wasn't like that with the 70s poll.
