everyone always gets so excited when spring is finally here, but this is a thread for appreciating the slow onset of spring

i love how clean the streets look after the snow melts

þjóðaratkvæðagreiðsla (clouds), Friday, 1 March 2013 15:07 (twelve years ago)

and/or talking about rites of spring -- actual rites, not the band (unless you are dying to talk about the band but tbh i never felt strongly about them one way or the other)

i love the smell

this is going to be a good month. i turn 30 and i get my annual bonus on the day i turn 30, with a week off work.

longer evenings have just started becoming noticeable too.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Friday, 1 March 2013 15:08 (twelve years ago)

that sounds like a plan!

this is happening in town on sunday

What you'll hear in the Fern Room is Orniphonia 2 by Chicago composer and artist Bob Snyder. Importantly, there are no actual bird sounds in this piece at all—everything is created through electronic means using analog synthesis. The compositional approach is similar to the groundbreaking Forbidden Planet (1956), the first movie with an electronic soundtrack. In that film, each character is accompanied by a unique sound created by an electronic circuit. In Orniphonia 2, the sound of each “creature” is also generated by a particular circuit. Each circuit generates patterns consisting of cycles within cycles that interact and change. The fact that a circuit producing regular interacting patterns of change can mimic a living organism reflects the fact that all living things exhibit rhythmic behavior, and that all biological life interacts with its environment in a regular way.

All this and my birthday's tomorrow so fuck yeah March.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2013 15:13 (twelve years ago)

the first bike ride through the park to the fern room is one of the things i am looking forward to the most. i am maxed out on drama and ready for some outdoors activities prontito.

the neighborhood makes me skittish but we should go together!

þjóðaratkvæðagreiðsla (clouds), Friday, 1 March 2013 15:16 (twelve years ago)

me too, but i brave the waters for the fern room (it's closer to me than gp too)
this weekend is super weird for a reason i will hopefully explain to you when i see you on sunday! this event has been on the calendar, which means i have to actually do it.

one thing i find difficult/challenging about spring is remembering how to do things again; slowing down in the fall is always a challenge too.

I hated March growing up because in upstate NY it was pretty much just gray, muddy, icy, slush, punctuated by the occasional blizzard. March in East Tennessee is a whole other thing, there's usually a point during the month where suddenly everything blooms in about 3 days and it's 70 and sunny. We get some more dreary weather into April, but still, it's generally beautiful. It hasn't started well this year -- 35 and gray today -- but forecast says 66 by next weekend, so here's hoping.

early to mid spring here is harsh and schizo. the air is cold and the sun is glaring. you're grateful for the extra 10-15 degrees F but it's still a little unpleasant, it's dry and dirty, everything is still dead, the sun feels pissed somehow. our last snowstorm usually isn't until may. around then it starts to soften up a little and there you are in early summer. spring is like all the coughing and drainage of congestion you have to go through before you finally kick a cold.

Jeff, Sunday, 9 March 2014 17:06 (eleven years ago)

True, living in Texas I have never understood the reason for DST. All it ever did was make bedtime difficult when I was a kid. Perhaps TX could opt out! Sum sets damn close to 9 pm in south Texas in the summer.

I was 8 or 9 and figured if the time could be changed and you lose or gain an hour then what was real?

*tera, Sunday, 9 March 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

Just seen a glorious sunset, it feels like the first in a long time. Saying that there been some wonderful winter sunrises during the shit weather. The first sight of spring gives me a jolt of optimism and gaiety, which has usually dissipated badly by the summer, but still it is nice while it lasts.

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 9 March 2014 19:10 (eleven years ago)

when i first learned of daylight savings, i thought it meant i would lose an hour of sleep every night until the fall ;_;

i think it's a little too early now -- i remember when it was the last sunday in april. late march/early april would be better imo. also it kind of bothers me that 'standard' time is only in use 1/3 of the year

it's more than the weather for me -- the cold season (nov-feb) is accompanied by a slew of holidays that i don't care about/would prefer to ignore and a hibernation period i find stultifying. it's more than the weather for me -- the cold season (nov-feb) is accompanied by a slew of holidays that i don't care about/would prefer to ignore and a hibernation period i find stultifying. March-October brings increasing sun, warmth, AND people. that's important to me. i didn't realize how important it was for a long time but it is important to me!!

In the UK, we've just had the wettest February on record; they don't keep wind records but I'd happily bet it's been the windiest, too. The woods are a carnage of fallen trees and the fields are shin-deep in water but the days are heavier with light and the birds are singing so I'll take it.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 1 March 2021 16:17 (four years ago)

Growing up in the Northeast, spring was my least favorite season. I remember it as a slurry of dirty snow, muddy boots, damp mittens and dead yellow grass poking through during thaws. I never understood the appeal of the season til I moved to East Tennessee, where it really does that Bambi thing where everything suddenly flowers in mid-to-late March, we get highs from 65 to 75, and it is just totally gorgeous (if hard on the sinuses).

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Wednesday, 1 March 2023 16:51 (two years ago)

The excitement of March is dampened a little by the prospects of a snowstorm getting prepared to dump up to a foot of snow on us tomorrow. :/

Also the part of the forecast that pointed out additional systems on the way that may likely mean March alone exceeds our snow totals for all of the rest of winter.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 2 March 2023 21:15 (two years ago)

Fret if you must — I will deal with snow when it happens but the trajectory is inevitable. It will gradually get better and no snow dumps can stop it.

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Friday, 1 March 2024 21:26 (one year ago)

It's not like many of them make much sense. February is just a weird word altogether, while September, October, November and December are based on the Latin for seven, eight, nine and ten, respectively. All very plainspoken and orderly you might think. But they're months 9 through 12.

The numerical discrepancy is because the calendar ours is based on originally only had ten months in it so when they inserted two new ones it got all messed up. Why did they add them at beginning and mess up the count? They didn't! Originally New Year's Day was March 1st and January and February were at the end of the year.
