Just because it's "natural" doesn't make it a good idea. Dumping shit in a river is disrupting an ecosystem.

Was just thinking earlier that I don't remember ever having a green pint of guiness nor how you'd die it that way since it starts off darker.

Stevolende, Saturday, 16 March 2013 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

The venerable green beer tradition in the USA always applies to mass-market lagers, containing little more than a thin whey of water, barley, hops and chemicals. A drop of green food coloring is enough to make a distinct color difference.

Blue Waffle Disease (Aimless), Sunday, 17 March 2013 04:25 (thirteen years ago)

St. Patrick's Day in Chicago is a hellscape of drunken morons covered in green plastic flotsam and vomit, clawing at the windows of packed bars selling green Bud Light in commemorative cups that already litter my street. More appropriate for the river to run red w/ blood imo.

The green beer thing is way weirder than the green river thing imo. Like it's st paddy's, shall we have a pint of delicious porter? Nah let's just drink the same shitty American beer we always drink but dye it green. Like they do in Ireland.

Also you know that corned beef & cabbage or whatever you guys eat on st Patrick's is not actually a thing right? The future societies are so disappointed

carl agatha, Sunday, 17 March 2013 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not saying it's the best idea but "dumping chemicals in the river" is misframing it

Is it? I get how the word "chemicals" has certain baggage (esp given that everything is made of chemicals), but they *are* dumping barrels of dye that come from a chemical factory into the river. I don't really see how it's misleading, except that you're arguing that it's a harmless chemical. My argument is, even if it's claimed to be "harmless", do we really know this? And is this respectful way to treat an increasingly rare natural resource? Granted, there's a lot of bad shit happening to water supplies everywhere, and maybe this is low on the totem pole, but I don't think it's a good excuse to continue doing it.

Poliopolice, Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

all good points

mister borges (darraghmac), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

where do you stand on fluoride

mister borges (darraghmac), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

even if it's claimed to be "harmless", do we really know this

1. Is there a place other than Chicago that notably does this?
2. This "increasingly rare natural resource" is connected directly to the seventh largest freshwater lake in the world
3. "How do we know it's not harmful?!?"
brb with your evidence of absence

I mean, this is dumb, but trying to claim it could be harmful, don't know how, is pretty much applicable to any human action. Or any action by anything.

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

if only we could return to the days when a city could dump massive quantities of untreated sewage into their rivers

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

ya but at least it wasnt chemicals, ooooh did someone say chemicals dives into oxygen tent

mister borges (darraghmac), Sunday, 17 March 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

2. This "increasingly rare natural resource" is connected directly to the seventh largest freshwater lake in the world

And? That does not make it a resource that we should be cavalier about. Water is a rare valuable resource. Look into it. There is a very serious freshwater crisis on the horizon, and it is not getting better, despite the fact that there is a large lake in Illinois.

3. "How do we know it's not harmful?!?" brb with your evidence of absence

Hm. Your logic escapes me. You're kind of saying that as long we don't have immediately evidence that something is bad, we should feel good about doing it. I can see how that could be a valid argument when you're making a calculated risk for a greater good, but when we're talking about dumping dye in a river, I think the better argument is that we should avoid frivolously doing shit that is capable of causing systemic damage, even in absence of evidence.

where do you stand on fluoride

This is a red herring. Fluoride is put into treated water, not dumped indiscriminately into an untreated water supply.

what about all the air pollution from fireworks, Poliopolice? where do you stand on that?

I'm against unnecessary pollution. I'm surprised that I have to defend this stance.

This is a red herring. Fluoride is put into treated water, not dumped indiscriminately into an untreated water supply.

Does treatment of sewage and wastewater remove fluoride? Are you saying that all fluoride put into treated, drinkable water is either metabolized by people or removed from wastewater?

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Sunday, 17 March 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

What I meant by the fact it's a huge body of water is that there is the tiniest, tiniest fraction of green food coloring in the water. Which is, to our knowledge, completely nontoxic.

How about you read up about fertilizers spread inefficiently on frozen fields, pesticides, poor use of natural watersheds as filtering agents due to the draining of wetlands, and the wholesale sewage and toxic waste that gets into the watershed, and then tackle a stupid cosmetic trick that uses the tiniest amount of food coloring later?

☠ ☃ ☠ (mh), Sunday, 17 March 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

Dumping one human corpse into the lake, which the mob probably has done a zillion times, would put more pollutants in the lake than a few gallons of food coloring

almost time to revisit this retarded annual ritual. Reading over this thread, I'm kind of floored at how many people are defending needlessly dumping dye into our precious water supply because "it's not the worst thing we could be doing" and how apparently it's ok because there's pollution occurring elsewhere in the world. Holy shit, no wonder this world is fucked.

it is, actually! it's usually really helpful in determining whether to pay attention to them or not. like people who use slurs, for instance. or like me, for instance, who can't make a coherent sentence for shit.

brimstead, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 05:23 (eleven years ago)

poliopolice's staunch dedication to this issue should inspire us. here we are with St. Patrick's day still weeks away, a moment when most of us remain blithely inattentive to the coming horrors that are peeping at us from just over the horizon of time.

but not poliopolice, he is johnny on the spot, ready once again to take up the cudgels and batter away at his sworn foe for as long as it takes to beat it into the earth for another year. I have no doubt that we may look forward to many similar revivals of this lonely crusade, heedless of the odds, intent only upon the victory he alone believes will be his reward. it kind of makes my heart swell to contemplate it.

There are people in the U.S. who will get angry if someone wears orange to a St. Patrick's Day celebration (or on St. Patrick's Day). Is that an example of Americans shooting for authenticity and missing?

I think so. I'm not gonna say definitively.

if they'd a sash, a bowler hat or a lambeg drum OTOH they've got it coming to em.

I just misunderstood. I did a book report on troubles 25 years ago, and all I remember is that any good Irish Catholic should hate marmalade.

St Patrick's Day is on the 17th march

God Americans suck at being Irish but they won't stop trying

I have heard tell of other countries copying the Americanized celebration of St. Patrick's Day, complete with liquor and beer-branded merchandise and wearing novelty sparkly green top hats. Eventually it will be the canonical version. I mean, the population of Chicago is half the population of Ireland, and it's hardly the only city with stupid merchandising.

This whole line of thought is giving me a flashback to a UK-themed bar I went to last year. It was actually more like someone had gone to a UK-themed pub in the US, and then made an "American UK-themed pub"-themed bar.

iirc I grew up a lot further south of the border than you, and people wearing orange on Paddy's day would definitely be seen to be trying to be ~smart.

online I've only read Americans saying "OH I'M GOING TO WEAR ORANGE LOL", knowing what the symbolism is, so I'm inclined to think "twats", generally.

ppl in the pic above don't seem to be of that ilk, like they've just thrown it in as part of the complete tricolour :D

I went to a "British pub" in San Diego that I count among the worst drinking experiences I've ever had

I almost don't blame the places - there's a local chain of 'pubs' (sports bars where you can watch soccer) called The Londoner that everyone talks about as being Irish... despite being named The Londoner.

ya gyac you'd rly need to judge it case by case I'd say

donegal town had a large COI community, well integrated AFAIK, but even so I dont remember from my time there whether it was a big colour in the parade

but its on a few of the bands on the island definitely. possibly too far removed to have a sting associated there, idk. worth a read up perhaps

Wrigleyville has been a complete shitshow when I was there early in the night on a random weekend, I can only imagine the hell on earth that descends on St. Patrick's Day

didn't go north of 14th Street in NYC, but i don't get the green Mardi Gras beads shit; poor repurposing.

Did see a guy in a green t shirt pissing next to a real-estate office basement in the West Village, so the holiday was official.
