Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio said there was "special significance" to the fact that the race is 26.2 miles long and 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

Laura Nowacki, a spokeswoman for the Newtown Strong Fund, says the runners will hit Heartbreak Hill knowing it's nothing like the pain felt by the runners back home. She says, "It's just running, but we want our steps to count."

The mile marker that will hang at the end of the 26th mile will feature the city seal surrounded by 26 stars, one for each victim.

There also will be 26 seconds of silence at the start before the race.

the camera is obviously pointing down, swinging wildly as the person runs, and the dude on Channel 5 says "at the end, you can see someone's legs go flying through the air"

this is very obviously NOT the case, what you see is a swinging camera filming the legs of running people with the camera adjusting poorly for rapid light changes

My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Sometimes I want to think all these bombs and killings are accidents (I'm trying to come up with dozens of reasons this could be accidental), but the truth is there are many people with so much hate and feel the need to hurt others in various ways, even those who are doing no harm and, on the contrary, are doing something positive in their lives.

We really have to ask ourselves why we have failed, because it isn't only those who commit these crimes that have failed, it is everyone in a given society.

Anonymous tweeted something like "Welcome to the Police State in Boston". Honestly, this is part of the problem. Shutting down WiFi because the bombs might be detonated this way blocks innocent people from getting in touch with family and authorities. Now we don't know what is going on. If people wanted to detonated bombs via WiFi they could do it, blocked or unblocked. It will just take them a little longer to do it.

It also does cut down the WiFi 'traffic' connection or whatever the police need to monitor, but everyone is left unaware. Better to be transparent in this case, withholding only leads that help catching those responsible. It is a fine line, I know.

We will have to wait until all this is over and people get a chance to tell their side of the story. Hopefully people are recording what is going on with their smartphones (pictures and videos and sound).

just to provide a little color, the marathon is one of the best days we have here--arrival of spring, day baseball, big crowds and public gatherings all over the place. it's also one of the best public drinking events i know of, and even the cops can't be bothered with much more than a half-hearted "pour it out."

Also just for the record, 4:00-4:10 is a solid time (~9.5min/mile pace)... a faster than the average finishing pace at Boston which is a more elite race than most being that you need to qualify for it.

CLEVELAND - RTA confirms a suspicious package at the RTA Rapid station located at East 55th Street and I-490.
The package was reported around 9:30 a.m. There are K9 dogs on site, the area and buildings surrounding the station have been evacuated.
RTA has stopped all trains going east of Tower City including red, blue and green. The red line operating west of Tower City is operating.
Buses are now transporting riders on closed lines.

I want to read these stories because I almost feel a duty to put faces and names to these fatalities, to recognize them as human beings.

tbh, i'm reassured by the reticence. nowadays, we expect immediate information access, but where criminal investigation is concerned, i think it's often best to make sure the information is legit before spreading it around. perhaps especially where terrorism is concerned. better a period of uncertainty than one of baseless, racist finger-pointing. not that you can't have both...
