Quite excited about Bruce Dern in Nebraska, frankly.

Went with Gray here, in the hope he fulfills his promise. But no one gives a shit who wins the Palme, esp in the US.

It's a big deal for cinephiles and within the film industry.

i can't think of a prolific American filmmaker who makes LESS garbage than Soderbergh, cept maybe those Ocean's sequels I never saw.

soderbergh's made some movies i really hated, but im not gonna piss on a guy just because he shot for the moon and came up short. he's a quality filmmaker

i just read a lil about some of these movies; that the zhang-ke is a road movie w/martial arts sequences, that the sorrentino is another tony sevillo film.

One quibble is the full screen appearance of a movie poster for Disney’s 1963 The Incredible Journey near the end of the film. That would be fine but purists may quibble since Llewyn Davis is supposed to be set in 1961.

ya it was... it was a super-broad comedy and it was 2.5 hours long

the fireworks for jaws went off after richard dreyfus introduced it to the audeince and it started. it really should have been at the climax tho! i'm choosing to believe spileberg set them off as a "yo dudes" cuz they came from teh water from the general vicinity of his yacht

any claire denis film is a must-see but this sentence-- "Denis undermines traditional narrative at every turn, preferring elliptical, patience-testing opacity to moment-by-moment decipherabilty" -- gives me pause. i thought her last feature (white material) was pretty bad, mostly b/c this approach to plotting seems kind of modish rather than fruitful sometimes. 35 shots of rum was genius though.

Heard La Vie d'Adèle was quite the event.

Expectations are probably more modest for Nebraska, and the response today is what I’d call mixed-positive. Among the journalists I’ve spoken to, I’m one of the most enthusiastic; otherwise, I’ve heard a lot of “I like it, but I didn’t love it,” and then there’s the Village Voice’s Stephanie Zacharek, who told me that Nebraska made her want to stab her eyes out.

nebraska: alexander payne is still awful in black & white
la vie d'adéle: very french in the best way, super-erotic, emotional, lesbian love story, i loved it. sat two rows down from the stars and stood for the 15-minute standing ovation. whatsherface is gonna be a huge star. she was amazing.

in other news, sitting in the fourth row centre at cannes still doesnt stop some people from texting during movies

payne has made some good films. election is a little masterpiece IMO. the rest of them have some really well-observed moments and often promising beginnings but they then take some severe turns into conventionality.... he seems too willing to sell out his characters for a laugh or worse for a sentimental conclusion.

i guess re the descendants it just seemed like a mess structurally, thematically... for which i blame the screenwriters more than payne. naturally it won an oscar.

also the emotional beats in that movie felt increasingly false, by the end i was watching this stuff i could recognize in some abstract way as "moving" but it completely failed to move me.

music was very pretty but i knew that before the movie.

election is great, the rest is shit

Kechiche is the first African director to win the prize in 38 years, and only the second overall. As far as I can figure out, based on wikipedia. Also, he dedicated the win to the revolution in Tunisia. Actually, I'm quite pleased with the awards. Don't think the Coens need any more, but oh well.
