Yeah, Dr. Pepper does have a certain cherry cough-syrup similarity. It's no more than my 17th-favourite flavour of soda - although I did adopt the display name "Canadian Club & Dr. Pepper" for a few weeks back in 2011 or so.

People drank recreational Robotussin DM when I was in high school and college.

Mr. Pibb didn't need to go to med school to learn how to taste awesome and provide high amounts of caffeine. Mr. Pibb learned all that in a two year associates program at a community college. Mr. Pibb has his head on straight, & doesn't need the high stress environment of a medical practice. He cold chills it at various strange restaurants and the occasional independent vending machines. Mr. Pibb is only available in areas where the local Coca-Cola bottler doesn't distribute Dr. Pepper, or something like that.

I've never seen Moxie sold outside the northeast US. I have no idea if I really like the flavor, but it reminds me of my two pleasant summers in Maine when I was a teenager so I like drinking it the few times i'm somewhere it's sold.

The period (full stop) after "Dr" was discarded for stylistic and legibility reasons in the 1950s. Dr Pepper's logo was redesigned and the text in this new logo was slanted. The period made "Dr." look like "Di:". After some debate, the period was removed for good (it had been used off and on in previous logos).[7]

Not really. It has about 15% more than the equivalent amount of Coke, and a third as much as a cup of coffee. Pepsi Max is the major-brand soda with the most caffeine in it.

I really wanted to like root beer as a kid because of reading Peanuts comics and because I thought it would be similar to ginger beer (so good), but root beer is no ginger beer.

Sometimes - rarely - see DXM-containing cough medicine behind the counter at chemists in the UK but I think you need a doctor's prescription and I've never heard of anyone being written a prescription for cough medicine.

I routinely take more than the recommended dose of cough syrup when sick. The one time I purposefully drank a bottle of cough syrup back in college, I laid down for a nap then woke up two hours before I went to sleep. My mom called and I was having trouble breathing on the phone with her, but I convinced her it was because I had been doing "exercises" which lol because I'd never exercised a day in my life at that point. Afterward, I huddled under a blanket for like 5 hours listening to the theme from Terminator 2 on repeat and then So What by Ministry on repeat, drinking gallons of water, and getting some pretty bitchin visuals.

Once on a trip to the Boy Scout Jamboree, we stopped at 7-11 and I got a Big Gulp of Dr. Pepper. We got back out to the car and were driving down the road when I took my first sip: it was all syrup, no carbonation. It absolutely tasted like cough syrup in its undiluted form. Just tossed it out at the next rest stop.

Birch beer is big in Delaware, too. People always forget Delaware when discussing Mid-Atlantic/northeast regionalisms and where hurricanes are going to make landfall. :(

There's an alcoholic Dr Pepper combo, I had a six-month bout of being well into it. It's a half-pint glass, half full of lager, half full of coke, you drop a shot of amaretto into it and down it in one. Tastes *exactly* like Dr Pepper.

Fanta is delicious. You can get it all over the UK and Europe and I think here on the East Coast too but maybe I'm wrong. When we would go to Germany when I was little my favortite thing to order was a Spezi which is fata and coke mixed. So good.

xpost to Stevie re. Virgil's. i think i ran into the carbonation issue once when i bought Virgil's that hadn't been refrigerated. with ice it usually is good though. i value the complexity of Virgil's, there seems to be more going on there. subtleties.

I mean I buy it on the shelf fron Trader Joe's and put it in my fridge when I get home, but having worked stock in a natural foods store and actually checking in cases of Virgil's I can tell you that they are shipped and almost always stored at room temperature and put in cold cases like when the cold case needs to be refilled.

We also were once mistakenly sent a case of Virgil's Dr. Better and decided to just sell it rather than send it back. It was not better than Dr. Pepper.

maybe i am just enamored by the fancy label.

i don't drink virgil's regularly at all though. i gave up soda for the most part years ago.

I've decided Rocky Mountain Soda Co. Evergreen Elderberry soda is the baseline for medicinal beverages. Really borderline horrible cough syrup taste that seems like it needs to be mixed with alcohol, or maybe gasoline. And ignited.

I have an inhuman sensitivity to licorice flavors because I hate them, but I do adore Dr Pepper so I'll rep for the secret flavor not being licorice.

(this flavour doesn't exist in the UK as far as I know. Found some USian Grape Fanta while image-googling too, no idea if that tastes the same. This one tastes of cough mixture/children's medicine with a disturbing aroma and aftertaste of rotting/fermenting grain which made me check the use by date.)
