Does Dr. Pepper taste like medicine?

Message Bookmarked

Someone told me once that Dr. Pepper is p much only an Americn thing bcz people in other countries think it tastes like medicine. This is a thing that I think about sometimes. What was your initial impression of Dr. Pepper? Someone telling you that it tastes like medicine after the fact and then you being all "oh yeah I can sorta see that" doesn't count; I war to know what conclusion you came to on your own.

Yeah, Dr. Pepper does have a certain cherry cough-syrup similarity. It's no more than my 17th-favourite flavour of soda - although I did adopt the display name "Canadian Club & Dr. Pepper" for a few weeks back in 2011 or so.

Mr. Pibb didn't need to go to med school to learn how to taste awesome and provide high amounts of caffeine. Mr. Pibb learned all that in a two year associates program at a community college. Mr. Pibb has his head on straight, & doesn't need the high stress environment of a medical practice. He cold chills it at various strange restaurants and the occasional independent vending machines. While he doesn't need any ostentatious flair, he still loves his brother, "Pibb XTRA," although they have had squabbles in the past about the exclusion of the letter E.

There are a lot of internet theories about Dr. Pepper's secret ingredients (I had always heard prune juice was one; others deny this.) Here's a significantly different one than the OP:

1. Amaretto 2. Almond 3. Blackberry 4. Black Licorice 5. Carrot 6. Clove 7.Cherry 8. Caramel 9. Cola 10. Ginger 11. Juniper 12. Lemon 13. Molasses 14. Nutmeg 15. Orange 16. Prune 17. Plum 18. Pepper 19. Root Beer 20. Rum 21. Raspberry 22. Tomato 23. Vanilla.

Mr. Pibb is only available in areas where the local Coca-Cola bottler doesn't distribute Dr. Pepper, or something like that.

I've never seen Moxie sold outside the northeast US. I have no idea if I really like the flavor, but it reminds me of my two pleasant summers in Maine when I was a teenager so I like drinking it the few times i'm somewhere it's sold.

The period (full stop) after "Dr" was discarded for stylistic and legibility reasons in the 1950s. Dr Pepper's logo was redesigned and the text in this new logo was slanted. The period made "Dr." look like "Di:". After some debate, the period was removed for good (it had been used off and on in previous logos).[7]

It's not an apple, it's not an orange, it's not a strawberry, it's not a root beer, it's not even a cola. It's a different kind of drink with a unique taste all its own."[2]

Dr Pepper is great and this thread made me buy one. Used to get one every day but have been getting Coke instead lately for some reason. Damn my fizzy drink addiction. (Oh hi I am British)

WilliamC otm that "Dr. Pepper only tastes like medicine when it's warm and flat". Dandelion and burdock, now that's a good medicine-flavoured drink to serve ice cold with vodka. Kind of addicted to the Fentiman's one. Drink I had recently which most resembled cough mixture: corner shop pre-mixed "strawberry daiquiri", £3.

I really wanted to like root beer as a kid because of reading Peanuts comics and because I thought it would be similar to ginger beer (so good), but root beer is no ginger beer.

Sometimes - rarely - see DXM-containing cough medicine behind the counter at chemists in the UK but I think you need a doctor's prescription and I've never heard of anyone being written a prescription for cough medicine.

I routinely take more than the recommended dose of cough syrup when sick. The one time I purposefully drank a bottle of cough syrup back in college, I laid down for a nap then woke up two hours before I went to sleep. My mom called and I was having trouble breathing on the phone with her, but I convinced her it was because I had been doing "exercises" which lol because I'd never exercised a day in my life at that point. Afterward, I huddled under a blanket for like 5 hours listening to the theme from Terminator 2 on repeat and then So What by Ministry on repeat, drinking gallons of water, and getting some pretty bitchin visuals.

Once on a trip to the Boy Scout Jamboree, we stopped at 7-11 and I got a Big Gulp of Dr. Pepper. We got back out to the car and were driving down the road when I took my first sip: it was all syrup, no carbonation. It absolutely tasted like cough syrup in its undiluted form. Just tossed it out at the next rest stop.

Crazy talk.

Cream soda is disgusting. For some reason the place where I took riding lessons when I was little had all these strange sodas in a vending machine and one of them was cream and my mom always got it and oh god it's so gross. Cool story, I know.

-- the earliest diet version of dr. pepper tasted particularly medicinal and had a dusty artificial sweetener aftertaste. i returned to it recently and found it no worse than any other diet soda--maybe years of drinking aspartame-sweetened sodas since have inured me to the artificial sweetener aftertaste--but not as good as the full calorie version.

-- the antitussive ingredient in robitussin is dextromethorphan, a dissociative that has similar effects to dissociatives like ketamine or methoxetamine (mxe) or phencyclidine (pcp). during the last two years of high school, i routinely got high by drinking robitussin.

-- i had a bunch of empty bottles of robo under my bed. my mom came into my room and said, "it smells like dr. pepper in here."

dylannn, Thursday, 13 June 2013 13:37 (twelve years ago)

skoal xtra rich blend, after an initial burst of fruit punch-y artificial berry flavor fades out in the first few spits, tastes as close to a 50/50 blend of robitussin maximum strength and diet dr. pepper as you could ever want.

There's an alcoholic Dr Pepper combo, I had a six-month bout of being well into it. It's a half-pint glass, half full of lager, half full of coke, you drop a shot of amaretto into it and down it in one. Tastes *exactly* like Dr Pepper.

emil.y, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:55 (twelve years ago)

that would be a "flaming dr pepper"

fit and working again, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

For a Flaming Dr. Pepper you drop a shot glass of Amaretto topped with 151 rum set ablaze into a half glass of beer then chug it (after making sure the flames are out). So minus the coke, plus 151.

Many years ago, I drank a completely absurd number of Flaming Dr. Pepper shots the night before I was supposed to leave on a road trip from Colorado to Delaware. That was a baaaaaaad morning. Ugh.

dylannn, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 20:46 (twelve years ago)

Fanta originated as a result of difficulties importing Coca-Cola syrup into Nazi Germany during World War II due to a trade embargo.[2] To circumvent this, Max Keith, the head of Coca-Cola Deutschland (Coca-Cola GmbH) during the Second World War, decided to create a new product for the German market, using only ingredients available in Germany at the time, including whey and pomace – the "leftovers of leftovers", as Keith later recalled.[2][3] The name was the result of a brief brainstorming session, which started with Keith exhorting his team to "use their imagination" ("Fantasie" in German), to which one of his salesmen, Joe Knipp, immediately retorted "Fanta!"[3]
While the plant was effectively cut off from Coca Cola headquarters during the war, plant management did not join the Nazi Party. After the war, the Coca Cola corporation regained control of the plant, formula and the trademarks to the new Fanta product — as well as the plant profits made during the war.[2][3]

Something else from the fanta-wiki:

The original formula of Orange Fanta, available in Germany, Austria, and other countries, is completely different from the drink marketed in the United States as Fanta Orange. The brand name goes before the flavor. The original contains orange juice and has a color similar to orange juice, while the version made for the US market is artificially colored red-orange and does not taste like fruit juice. The US version also contains brominated vegetable oil similar to other orange/citrus drinks marketed in the US, such as Mountain Dew. This ingredient gives a beverage a candy-like flavor that seems to stick to the tongue; it is prohibited in India and some countries in Europe due to health concerns.

in high school when i lived in VA i used to get "dr perky" from food lion all the time,

On a high school trip to Ocean City, I chugged a two-liter of Dr. Perky in a game of truth or dare. I threw it up over a balcony.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 00:38 (twelve years ago)

xpost to Stevie re. Virgil's. i think i ran into the carbonation issue once when i bought Virgil's that hadn't been refrigerated. with ice it usually is good though. i value the complexity of Virgil's, there seems to be more going on there. subtleties.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 05:26 (twelve years ago)

I mean I buy it on the shelf fron Trader Joe's and put it in my fridge when I get home, but having worked stock in a natural foods store and actually checking in cases of Virgil's I can tell you that they are shipped and almost always stored at room temperature and put in cold cases like when the cold case needs to be refilled.

We also were once mistakenly sent a case of Virgil's Dr. Better and decided to just sell it rather than send it back. It was not better than Dr. Pepper.

I've decided Rocky Mountain Soda Co. Evergreen Elderberry soda is the baseline for medicinal beverages. Really borderline horrible cough syrup taste that seems like it needs to be mixed with alcohol, or maybe gasoline. And ignited.

You know what does taste like medicine is this imported can of Grape Fanta I just bought from the South African shop up the road
http://www.southafricanshop.co.uk/assets/thumbnails/products/19317/large/CCJL083C.jpg?1327355572

(this flavour doesn't exist in the UK as far as I know. Found some USian Grape Fanta while image-googling too, no idea if that tastes the same. This one tastes of cough mixture/children's medicine with a disturbing aroma and aftertaste of rotting/fermenting grain which made me check the use by date.)

My first experience drinking DP had it served hot, and as far as I knew it was meant to be served only this way. This was probably 1966 or 67, and it may have been another couple years before I had it again. It seems weird now, but I think this was a thing back then. Anyone else hear of drinking it hot?
