Sab Deol said he was punched twice by Discipline inside the VIP area at the club, prompting his cousin to intervene.

Both men said they had done nothing to provoke the attack.

Discipline smiled and nodded at the jury as he was released from the dock to join his parents, who wept with joy.

He shouted “Yes” before hugging girlfriend Jacqueline Jossa, 19, who plays Lauren Branning in the BBC soap.

Had the case not been thrown out she had been due to give evidence in support of Discipline.

Robert Kenedy Nunes do Nascimento (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 September 2015 13:19 (ten years ago)

remember when the story was circulated that maicon douglas whatever was a bastardized tribute to mikey d

He does not know when or how the rumour started, just that he has heard it all his life and it is not true. Maicon Douglas's name may have an assonance with a certain Hollywood actor, but the Inter Milan right-back was definitely NOT named after the star of Basic Instinct and a host of other big-screen blockbusters.

"My parents aren't film buffs, I don't even know if they know who he is," the Brazilian told Gazzetta dello Sport in 2008. "It's just funny because this urban myth, that my parents were such fans of Michael Douglas that they named me after him, has been around for a decade. "Everybody assumes it's true and, until now, nobody has asked me if it is."

Jack Smoothy, from Yate, is charged with raping the girl between September 30 and October 31. He is also charged with grooming the girl after allegedly contacting her on more than one occasion.

I was going to mention the name of the guy who runs the funeral home that took care of my parents' funeral arrangements but I see that Devilock already mentioned him on August 31, 2015. Let me tell you, though: while Dick Tips has a comedy name and that was a bizarre news story, they were nothing but kind and professional when I had dealings with them and I couldn't have asked for a better company, especially with regards to my mom's arrangements when I was making them by myself.

Another local LOLsome name is the founder of our one big supermarket chain, Howard E. Butt, hence the name HEB. No, I am not making this up, and yes, it is the absolute best supermarket chain around.

The sudden rise in awareness of the surname "Buttigieg" in the U.S. (thanks to Pete Buttigieg) is kinda funny to me because for the longest time I'd always associated that surname with Canadian home organizing guru (kinda a proto-Marie Kondo minus the gimmickry) Hellen Buttigieg, whose show "Neat" became a mini-obsession for me back in 2015 - 2016.

another no-holds-barred Tokey Wedge adventure for men (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 13:20 (six years ago)

His surname at birth was "Tollemache-Tollemache", his father having doubled his original surname, "Tollemache", in 1876 after his second marriage. "de Orellana" derives from the naming customs of Spain, where his mother came from, and is a forename rather than part of his surname. The first "Tollemache-Tollemache" also seems to be an unusual forename. Leone was Ralph's sixth son, hence "Sextus". "Fraudatifilius" is Latin for "son of the defrauded one". "Leone" repeats a pattern seen in the names of his elder brothers and sisters (Lyonel, Lyonesse, Lyulph, Lyona, Leo, Lyonella and Lyonetta). His first five initials, "LSD OF", may include a reference to the divisions of the pre-decimal British currency, £sd, for pounds, shillings, and pence followed by half-pence (ob., "obol") and farthings (i.e., quarter-pence). This may be a reference to a financial dispute between his father Ralph and Ralph's first wife's trustees which had driven him bankrupt in 1863.[4] Similarly, an elder brother was named Lyulph Ydwallo Odin Nestor Egbert Lyonel Toedmag Hugh Erchenwyne Saxon Esa Cromwell Orma Nevill Dysart Plantagenet Tollemache-Tollemache[5]—his first 15 initials spell "LYONEL THE SECOND". In practice, Leone shortened his name to "Leone Sextus Tollemache".

Preserved Fishwife

and her jive-ass slippers

i don't want to go all william blake on this but i did think about posting it to the awesome names thread; this thread just got bumped first. i will readily agree that the name is both awesome and abysmal.

bizarro: it's actually just as funny to pronounce it with three syllables, if not funnier. i tried it. also you get to explain why it's three syllables, which is also some good 18th century yuks

Having spent much of the last year reading books written in or about the 18th Century, I can confirm that I have yet to come across a single name which possesses the magnificence of Preserved Fish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubert_Blaine_Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff_Sr.

Hubert Blaine Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff Sr. (a.k.a. Hubert Wolfstern,[2] Hubert B. Wolfe + 988 Sr.,[3] Hubert Blaine Wolfe+585 Sr.,[4] and Hubert Blaine Wolfe+590 Sr.,[5] among others) is the abbreviated name of a German-born American typesetter who has held the record for the longest personal name ever used. Hubert's name is made up from 27 names. Each of his 26 given names starts with a different letter of the English alphabet in alphabetical order; these are followed by an enormously long single-word surname. The exact length and spelling of his name has been a subject of considerable confusion due in part to its various renderings over the years, many of which are plagued by typographical errors. One of the longest and most reliable published versions, with a 988-letter surname, is as follows:

Adolph Blaine Charles David Earl Frederick Gerald Hubert Irvin John Kenneth Lloyd Martin Nero Oliver Paul Quincy Randolph Sherman Thomas Uncas Victor William Xerxes Yancy Zeus Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorffwelchevoralternwarengewissenhaftschaferswessenschafewarenwohlgepflegeundsorgfaltigkeitbeschutzenvorangreifendurchihrraubgierigfeindewelchevoralternzwolfhunderttausendjahresvorandieerscheinenvonderersteerdemenschderraumschiffgenachtmittungsteinundsiebeniridiumelektrischmotorsgebrauchlichtalsseinursprungvonkraftgestartseinlangefahrthinzwischensternartigraumaufdersuchennachbarschaftdersternwelchegehabtbewohnbarplanetenkreisedrehensichundwohinderneuerassevonverstandigmenschlichkeitkonntefortpflanzenundsicherfreuenanlebenslanglichfreudeundruhemitnichteinfurchtvorangreifenvorandererintelligentgeschopfsvonhinzwischensternartigraum Sr.[3]

Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff claimed that his great-grandfather composed the surname in the 19th century, when German Jews were obliged to take a second name.[24] In some printings of the above-noted AP wire story, Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff himself provided the following explanation of his prodigious surname:[25]

It tells a story of a wolf-killer, a resident of a stonehouse in a village, whose ancestors were conscientious shepherds whose sheep were well fed and carefully guarded against attack by ferocious enemies and whose ancestors 1,200,000 years before the first earth man, in a space ship made with tungsten and seven iridium motors and using light as a source of power, started a long journey across interstellar space, searching for a star around which was an inhabitable planet where they could establish a new race of intelligent mankind and where they would live long, happy lives and be free from attack by other intelligentsia from the outer space from whence they came.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 24 July 2021 09:17 (four years ago)

The backstory of Rougned Odor's name makes it even more awesomely abysmal. "Rougned" is a combination of his grandfather's name Douglas and his grandmother's name Nedia... but since all the males in his family have names beginning with the letter "R" they changed the "D" to "R." And who would want to be called Dougned Odor after all.

Hilaria doesn't seem that unusual or abysmal. Isn't it just the Spanish (or perhaps more broadly Latin) equivalent of Hilary?

Hilario is the male equivalent.

'Trashelle' is a really hard one to comprehend; if a fictional character who is the wife of a wealthy construction company owner and right-wing nutjob from suburban Boise had that name it would seem absolutely over the top and unbelievable.

Sorry if I'm missing the joke, but you know this is an urban legend, right? https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2009-feb-07-oe-daum7-story.html

JRN, Friday, 8 October 2021 13:56 (four years ago)

Lemongello is a real surname though. There was a popular cabaret singer in the 1970s named Peter Lemongello (accent on the "mon"). He had a cousin named Mark Lemongello who was a professional baseball player in the major leagues (late '70s).

Trivia tidbit: In Martin Scorsese's The Irishman Joey Gallo gets whacked at Umberto's Clam House after a celebratory evening at the Copacabana where Jerry Vale (Steven Van Zandt) is the featured singer. But in the real life incident in 1972, Gallo had actually been at the Copacabana enjoying Peter Lemongello's performance.

Josefa, Friday, 8 October 2021 14:21 (four years ago)

I will concede that it's possible that forks's sister had a student named Lemongelo after the surname Lemongello, but it would be an incredible coincidence, given that I've been hearing since I was a kid that somebody's sister or cousin or sister's cousin totally had a student named "Lemonjello" with a stress on the first o, they swear, why would they lie.

Thanks again, Wiki:Matt Abts (born September 30, 1953) is an American drummer,[1] best known as one of the founding members of the rock band Gov't Mule... Abts joined (Warren) Haynes and Allen Woody, who had both been members of The Allman Brothers Band, to form Gov't Mule in 1994. Before that, Abts and Haynes played with Dickey Betts; Haynes and Woody also played with Dickey in The Allman Brothers Band.

Several years ago a family in the local area named their son Walt Disney Christmas:
https://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/5358651.disney-he-look-like-his-father/

Thus giving him the full name Walt Disney Christmas Pain (his dad's surname is Pain). "Dad Nicholas David, who celebrated his 40th birthday on New Year's Eve, is such a big fan of Disney, he had Snow White and all seven dwarves tattooed on his back at the age of 18." Imagine if that man had been a huge fan of early turbojet designs. He might have called his son Centrifugal Flow Jet Turbine Pain instead.

I used to know someone on Facebook called Lemon Otter, but that is of course a fantastic name:

koogs, Monday, 12 September 2022 16:55 (three years ago)

Simultaneously awesome and odd:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roar_Strand

I found that name after reading about another Roar Strand, a fighter pilot:
https://www.i-f-s.nl/accidents-incidents-1980/

"During a ground controlled approach to Bodø Airbase, this F-104G suffered a substantial loss of engine power. The pilot, Roar Strand, realised he would not reach the runway and decided to eject. He landed with minor injuries in Valnesfjorden."

So there are or were at least two people in the world called Roar Strand. In fact Roar is apparently not all that unusual - it's the Norwegian equivalent of "Roger" - and there are a tonne of footballers with that name:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roar_(given_name)

Including Roar Christensen, Roar Hagen, Roar Johansen, a different Roar Johansen, and Roar Stokke.

Is Norway one of those places where there's a limited number of names, as in e.g. Iceland? I don't know much about Norway.

Ashley Pomeroy, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 18:27 (three years ago)

or e.g. Wales

Buckfast At Tiffany's (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 September 2022 18:52 (three years ago)

Not really limited as such, but heavily subject to trends (as I'm sure is the case elsewhere). To see the popularity of e.g. "Roar", visit the homepage of Statistics Norway, look for "Navnesøk", enter "Roar" and click the button, and you will find that out of Norway's 2,737,332 males, 6,581 have Roar as their first forename. Click the "Historisk utvikling" dropdown, and you'll see that it was particularly popular from about the end of WWII to the early 1970s – with a quite spectacular drop from 1973 to 1974. Intriguing.

That cricket website is a goldmine for anybody writing a novel set in the late 1800s where the villain is a British imperialist. It's almost like a random name generator but with actual names. All you have to do is smush together a forename and some surnames. Obviously you can't use real names otherwise the people who owned those names would take legal action. As per e.g. Ernő Goldfinger, who tried to sue Ian Fleming for using his surname but decided against it, perhaps foreseeing what would come to be called the Streisand Effect.

William Conrad Francis Smeed is an evil-sounding name, and yet instead of dedicating his entire life to evil he decided to occupy some of his time with cricket, so he can't be entirely evil. He might not be evil at all! NB I'm writing this in case he googles his own name and finds this thread. He's a trained cricketer with access to body armour and a cricket bat. It's sad clicking on some of those names and seeing that they last played in 2020. Sometimes I forget that COVID ever happened, and then something comes along and reminds me.

Do you know how see the cuckoo cloths. Cookit cloths.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Monday named Ginger K. Gooch to serve as the state’s next Supreme Court judge, solidifying a female majority on the state’s highest court.

Gooch, a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District in Springfield, was one of three judges nominated for the position by a seven-member commission last week. She will fill the vacancy left by Judge Patricia Breckenridge, who retired earlier this month.

“Her work ethic is unquestioned and unmatched,” Parson said during a press conference in Jefferson City on Monday. “She is a loving mother, a dedicated wife and a proud woman of faith. One thing that has become clear to me is Judge Gooch has a passion for service.”

According to:
https://dailyvoice.com/md/mount-airy-woodbine/virginia-motorcyclist-crashes-after-high-speed-police-chase-in-maryland-sheriff/

"Tyler Anakin Grover, 20, of Hampton, is facing multiple charges after allegedly leading deputies on a high-speed chase through Calvert County, nearly causing several head-on crashes in the process, according to the sheriff’s office."

He was born in 2005, so presumably his parents had just seen Revenge of the Sith at the cinema. So they decided to totally call their kid Anakin. At least he didn't turn out bad! Apart from the reckless driving and the high-speed chase.

I remember meeting a man called Tony Anthony once. Not an abysmal name, but I never had the courage to ask him if he was Anthony Anthony, or if his name actually was Tony. Did his parents realise that Tony is the short form of Anthony? Did they not? Were they proud, were they brave, were they crazy? It would be like calling your son Sid Sidney. Or Jim James.

Ironically all of the famous people called Tony Anthony aren't actually called Tony Anthony:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Anthony_(disambiguation)

The list includes a bogus evangelist whose real name is Andonis Athanasiou, a US actor with the Italian-sounding name of Tony Petitto, who adopted the name Tony Anthony in order to appear more authentically American in Spaghetti Westerns even though he actually was American, breathe in, and Darrell Anthony, a US wrestler who also went by the names Dirty White Boy, Mighty Yankee, The Invader, American Eagle II, The Grappler, T L Hopper, and Uncle Cletus.

He supposedly came from Bucksnort, Tennessee, a real place, but like so much in the world of wrestling the truth is malleable. There was a British Mighty Yankee, apparently a generic name shared by several wrestlers:
https://wrestlingheritage.co.uk/wrestlers-y1/

I occasionally wonder if I should call myself Dirty White Boy. Or Mighty Yankee. Fascism is on the rise, and there's no place in Thatcher's Britain for losers. I know fuck-all about The Mountain Goats, but "The Legend of Chavo Guerrero" is a fantastic song that deserves every one of the half-million-or-so views it has on Youtube. The only things I know about The Mountain Goats are that the band is one man, who releases a lot of music, and he doesn't operate Hacker T Dog on CBBC.
