Tall men - is it a prerequisite?

It seems that there is a rarely discussed rule that many women have about potential partners. They must be taller than them at least, and preferably at least 5'10" or whatever. I know Kate and Paul are an exception to this. If I were short I'd be well pissed off and probably compensate with aggression or something, but that's life.

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey Nick, first you start the fat vs skinny men thread and now you start this. You do like to live dangerously.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually don't prefer taller men, or rather I don't necessarily find them more attractive. Some guys are intimidated by me if I am taller than them, tho, and that in turn makes me uncomfortable.

Kerry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone wants me to unleash my ferocious kick-boxing skills.

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jane the Glorious hath said unto me this: she finds it distinctly unfair that she, being on the shorter side, has to crane her neck to look at me. And yet she puts up with me, so wahey.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, my rule is that a man has to be at least my height. That being said, I went a long time dating men that were my height or just barely taller, because I figured I could kick their ass real easy, and now that I'm dating someone significantly taller than me (about 4 or 5 inches), I have to say I well prefer men who are quite a bit taller than me. It makes me feel little. I like being little, I haven't been little since I was 12 and suddenly became GIANT CHILD.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have dated the freakishly short (4" 11" ) and the absurdly tall ( 7'). I prefer the slight though.

anthony, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me too. Looks like we're going to have to arm-wrestle.

suzy, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only dat e beautiful lovely, me

Mike Hanley, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do you shake hands at the end of a date or are you more passionate?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not hard to be taller than me. I'm 5'3", so, if you're a guy and you're shorter you're pretty damned unusual. No height requirement, then, but I do like skinny guys, as previously stated.

Melissa W, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not even 5'2", so I'd prefer someone taller than that. 5'7" is a comfortable height.

Lyra, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am not picky. If it walks on all fours and treats me well, he can stick around.
Seriously, I like tall. If he's smaller than me, then I look down on him. That's a definite no no in my book.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once had a long and loud argument with Pete on the bus on this very subject which culminated in me admitting I would only go out with someone I fancied which made Pete tell me I was shallow. Hmmm.

I prefer taller and preferably sufficiently taller that I can wear heels and he is still taller (or not shorter). I went out with someone for the first time ages ago and discovered that my boots made me taller than him and spent an evening leaning at an uncomfortable angle on the bar. Bah.

Emma, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am on deadline and unable to give a thought-thru personal answer (my favourite ever sex-dream featured no sex, but me snuggling up childlike into the belly of an impressively fat bald man with a beard — favourite I think becoz of sense of loved security — however waking and abroad in the world i am to be honest more inclined to FANCY petite ultra-boyish women): BUT does anyone know of any culture anywhere, high, far, ancient, whatever, where the girlz favour smaller men? (eg as the men in jamaica favour FAT girlz...)

all care and attention and caveat being attended to, re foolish or offensive generalisations etc

mark s, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taller guys are good. But I can make exceptions as of course the most important size is WALLET size. I'm petite anyway. It's nice being with a tall guy. You feel all nice and snuggly and fit together well. Mmm! A shorter guy? Don't think I could do it. Just being a little bit taller than me is fine also. But my current crush is on someone a lot taller so shush.

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark: on Venus in the culture of the Treens the shortest man is leader. They have however eliminated 'desire'.

Tom, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am so not getting involved in this conversation.

Alright I am. The only reason ever given to me when being spurned is that I am too short. This should make me aggressive, yet it doesn't. Not excessively anyway. Except for the chair thing. And making people cry.

Oh.

Pete, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
overrated

Mary (Mary), Friday, 25 July 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it went the other way around - guys look for women who are shorter.

I've never had a relationship with anyone taller than 5'5" or so, usually closer to 5'1" (I'm 6', give or take). Not something I do on purpose, it just happens that way.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 July 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

short girls are hot

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 25 July 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

taller than 5'4 would be nice, otherwise i don't care.

Pabst Blue Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 July 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 5'10", my girlfriend is 6'0", the first taller girl I've ever been with. It was difficult at first. Now it's fine. It's her legs, dammit. Ooooh, I hate it when she wears high heels. I feel dwarved.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 25 July 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I prefer men my height or taller, but I don't suppose it would really matter.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 25 July 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

as Sarah says, it's the size of the wallet that counts. Wallet does mean the same thing over there as it does here, I assume?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 25 July 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

it means NOB

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 25 July 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(may not be true)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 25 July 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Either way, it's still true.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 25 July 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

My girlfriend and I are both 5'11". I wish she was shorter. Not that I have anything against her, mind you, but just as Ally likes to be litte, I like girls to be little. Because only by comparison am I man size.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 25 July 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a compact 5'5" and have yet to go out with anyone shorter than me. The same height, yes, but not shorter.

My last girlfriend was 5'7". Actually, she probably still is. I felt slightly ill-at-ease when she wore heels and I doubt I could date someone taller than that and not feel slightly absurd.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I am only 5'3" so to date anyone shorter than me, well lets face it, i'd be dating a midget. Other reasons, 'little man syndrome' they always have soooo much to prove. It's like 'dude, you're short, face it. Now run along lil fella.'
I am with a 6'2" lad & it truly is so, so, so much better!! (not that i have ever been out with a midget!?!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I had no idea I had any kind of issue about this until Isabel (who is 5'10") bought these high-heeled boots and was suddenly as tall/taller than me and I had a really hard time adjusting.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

pinkpanther its not my height hun that makes it better, its my girth sensitivity

james (james), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

*sniggers*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 5'7. I was once pursued by a 6' woman. Had I noticed, I would have gone out with her, and I don't think I'd have been terribly worried by it. (Another woman, oddly with the same name, was interested in me at the same time - I didn't realise either were interested - the other asked me out, and it was only after we started dating that she mentioned that she felt she had to get in quickly.)

In my time on dating sites, it seems almost a universal requirement for woman that men are at least as tall. I'm not sure the reverse is so explicitly true with men - I don't look at male profiles so much.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the story that proves my flakedom. When I first met Dan, I thought we were about the same height (5'11"). It wasn't until two years into our relationship that I noticed that he was a little bit shorter then me, and when I asked him how tall he is it turned out he was 5'8"! He couldn't believe that I had never noticed before that he was shorter than me, but I really am that spacey.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i am 5'9" and thus a little short. however, i and don't really care whether women i date are short or tall. i have to say that i'm not a huge fan of women as tall as me wearing massive heels an towering over me, but i do like heels so prob abt 5'6"ish is my fave height, but it's not exactly set in stone and i'm not paranoid abt it...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah is a good 3 inches taller than me. After the first couple of months, I stopped noticing.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think my loved one and I are exactly the same height. I like it. I don't get a crick in my neck when I kiss him. If he was a wee skinny slip as well though I'm not sure I'd be so keen - I like something to hold on to.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 6' even. I've only ever dated one girl who was 'short' and she was always giving me shit about how she was actually above average for women. I called her a midget and a dwarf and it was cute and stupid. Frankly though I find height to be one of the most attractive things in a woman, because it makes spooning so much easier.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 6'4", so most girls are shorter than me. Yet, even then I prefer girls who are 'fun-sized'.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I'm 6' in some of my shoes, sometimes taller! Of course it is a prerequisite for me. I mean I've dated plenty of men who were under 6' tall but it kind of looked moronic.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

to ans the q: it better not be.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i always saw you as being really small ally - dunno why but... oh well...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I am, I just wear stilts a lot.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to forget the height difference until someone else points it out. Like isn't it funny?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

stilts = fairground chic
(which isn't much of a step from clown orgies but i'll leave that alone for now)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the completely boring-sized girls, who are like 5'7" or 5'8"? I feel my height is very bland.

Mandee, Friday, 25 July 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather be bland than hear stupid "Wow! You sure are tall!" comments from asshats.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 5'8 or 5'9 and still get asshat comments.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

that's pretty tall for a woman tho'

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How about "Wow! You sure are boring sized!" comments from asshats?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also pretty fly for a white guy, what's yr point?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

N., shut up you stupid sociopath.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

how can you be a boring size, that's stupid...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Man #1: "hey, you know what, i really think xxxx is pretty, interesting, cool and everything..."
Man #2: "nah, don't go there she's boring-sized..."

doesn't happen

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

As other small girls have said, I'm only 5'2" so ...

Toby is around 6". Ask him if he gets back ache.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also pretty fly for a white guy, what's yr point?

i wasn't talking abt you... you just rudely interrupted my posting...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Toby is around 6". Ask him if he gets back ache.

i am in fact 6". anna wears heels lots, thankfully. short girls rock, they're just the right size to put your arm around.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm about 5"5'. Everyone else in the world seems taller than me :(

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My girlfriend and I are the same height to the millimetre (both 6 foot dead) and it's kind of nice, but there is kind of a residual anxiety when she's wearing bigger shoes than me. I've never dated anyone taller than me, though for a while I really wanted to.

My shortest gf was 5 foot nothing. It was fine, I can remember nothing about it that felt strange or wrong.

In general, height is like totally irrelevant, IMHO.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, this isn't about what you like - it's about what het girls like.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Toby is around 6". Ask him if he gets back ache.

Dude, if six inches gives you a backache...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 5'6", so just average. Some are so opinionated about height, but I don't much care. I've fallen for guys my height before. I don't notice such things that readily (unless someone's reeally short or reeeally tall), and I generally overestimate people's heights.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

N., this thread is about what het girls like, not smug know-it-alls butting their way into conversation to belittle people.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick - sorry.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark - sorry.

Please can we kiss now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them under 5'10". 5'10" would be the maximum acceptable. Short guys get more sex anyway.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 5'11"; my girlfriend is a couple inches taller than me. I get to wear the heels, so it's good stuff.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote tall, skinny dudes but I would wouldn't I?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they're evil and elfen?

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Or elven. Whatever.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

How tall do you like your chix0rs, toraneko?

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I like evil, elven dudes. Like N.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tall skinny guys are kinda creepy

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They always look like they have scurvy.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

OK by "skinny" I don't mean "Jarvis-like" you know.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

so, no giant grosshoppers then

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am only 6'0" so I don't think I'm that creepy. Wait, I am skinnier than Jarvis so maybe that makes up for it. OK I am creepy.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, we're not talking "unhealthy", I just tend to like lanky.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to be lanky

now i'm uh what's the opposite of lanky?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hulky?

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Voluptuous.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in perfectly good health thank you very much.

That's too bad.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i was looking for "bogged down"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mentally unhealthy, N.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, I'm crazy me.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Mandee, I followed up your comment about being a bland height by saying that that is better than having stupid people make dorky comments about tallness. I would never call you stupid.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

She was totally calling you stupid, Mandee. Have her.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tall, but I don't particularly like being skinny, I think I'm getting more lanky than anything.

i think it is really unfair when tall dudes date 5'4" and shorter girls. they don't need the height! let them have the 5'7"-9"-ers so that i, as a 5'7" girl can have a 5'11" or taller dude!

Tall people are tall because God is pulling them towards Himself. Short people are short because the Devil has the same idea.

The great thing about being 6'2", is that I don't care how tall a woman is. She can be short (I've dated girls around 5'2") or tall (I've also been with a girl almost as tall as me and definitely taller in heels) and it doesn't make any difference to me as long as I'm taller than most of the guys.

The Dutch led the way. At the end of World War II, the average Dutch male stood no taller than 5 foot 7, about 3 inches shorter than the average American male. Today the average height for Dutch males is a shade less than 6 foot 1, making them the tallest people in the world. Scandinavian males run a close second.

I'm 5'9" and a half and RS is 5'10" and a half. The halves are very important. ;-) I have dated guys shorter than I am but have always been more attracted to taller guys. I would never say it was a prerequisite though, that just seems a little silly to me.

I will admit to breaking up with someone mainly because I was uncomfortable with how little he was. The guy in question was about 5'3' and very small and elfin. I felt like a giant next to him and it was just too weird.

Michael White, Friday, 25 July 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

why do guys who are 5'8" ALWAYS say they are 5'9"

Ha: I started saying I was 5'9" because either my brother or my father was claiming to be 5'8", and I am demonstrably taller than both of them, and it was easier and more pleasant to just decide I was 5'9" than argue with them that they were actually 5'7".

nabisco, Friday, 25 July 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

P.S. I really like the common "my boyfriend must be taller than me" rule women hold, insofar as that (and, occasionally, baldness) are the two dogmatic "superficial" points where women cede the high ground on these matters and we can all of us understand that we are all of us "shallow" about certain points and that is normal and good and it's no big deal.

nabisco, Friday, 25 July 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

(Not that it evens out levels of superficiality among men vs. women, or anything, but it's good that both sides have some experience of such things.)

and what, Friday, 25 July 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

okay but here is the thing i'm thinking right now
i always thought i was 5'8 but in fact i am really more like 5'7, somewhere in btwn the two. but in fact are we not always taller than actual doctor-office aka no shoes height b/c usually we are wearing shoes? i guess the shoes i wear always give me an extra inch minimum.

tho probably it doesn't matter so much, this matter of an inch or two, when probably what we're really talking abt here is more significant differences in height. whatever the case, somehow being a 5'7 tall woman seems not as tall as a 5'8 tall woman. and yet i always feel pretty tall. nb. quebec is full of short guys.

thinness in women is for other women, is it not? Boniness in women is not a terribly attractive quality (for the most part)

Ismael Klata, Monday, 31 August 2009 12:31 (sixteen years ago)

I met a couple once in which the girl was 6'4'' and the bloke 5'6''.

chap, Monday, 31 August 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - yeah but thin women generally get hit on more, it's true. i am under the impression that a lot of guys like delicate looking women.

the nice thing about being 5'1" is that almost all guys i meet are taller than me by at least a few inches, and if someone's 5'7" instead of 5'11" i'm fairly unlikely to notice on first impression. so basically i have a wider dating selection than my taller or pickier friends.

Maria, Monday, 31 August 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

I have always found it immensely refreshing that with certain exceptions for people who ALREADY have very thin girlfriends and whose loyalties lie in that direction, ILX men in general are equal opportunity leches where being not-thin is concerned.

The Lion's Mane Jellyfish, pictured here with its only natural predator (Laurel), Monday, 31 August 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

It's kind of like, it's not necessarily either thinness or shortness is preferred in women, but more the idea that the woman should just be *smaller*. Like, it's almost like it's OK - or even considered cute - if a short woman is plump, because it's almost like it heightens the effect of her petiteness.

Or maybe that's just my perception, because I've always been both tall and plump - and surrounded in my family by very tall men who just prefer very tiny women.

Except in a very few rare cases (I mean, OK, I have to admit part of the physical appear of Erol Alkan is his sheer physical massiveness - like, he's so huge he makes me feel doll-like by comparison which is a very rare experience for me these days) I tend to prefer men who are about the same size as me. (Ha ha, as stated in the original post there.)

Maybe it's an equality thing - or maybe, I admit, with my history, perhaps it's being physically afraid of men who are much larger than me.

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Monday, 31 August 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

I think that overall in popular culture, you're exactly right w/r/t women's sizes, in one way or another. But on an individual level, I've known plenty of guys who also like a statuesque armful and have gone for girls in that category. So in conclusion: meh.

Boys who like girls, like girls. Meeting someone you like who has different qualities can make you re-evaluate those qualities in everyone else. That has DEF happened to me w men: I now find a lot of things desirable based on certain people, that I didn't nec like before.

It drives me insane when tallish women have this requirement that guys they date be taller than them. I get maybe that you don't want to completely tower over yr dude (even though it's totally giving in to bullshit gender roles, but w/e, those are powerful, I understand), but like, I'm 5'11", and if a woman's 6', I'm pretty sure we'd work out just fine and that very few people would see us together and immediately think "oh what a a freak of amazonian nature that midget man seems to have found".

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Monday, 31 August 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

Ha: I started saying I was 5'9" because either my brother or my father was claiming to be 5'8", and I am demonstrably taller than both of them, and it was easier and more pleasant to just decide I was 5'9" than argue with them that they were actually 5'7".

god bless this -ation (Abbott), Monday, 31 August 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

haha I'm mostly just interested that with short guys it's considered a chip on the shoulder rather than, like, a fight against real discrimination

it's (mostly) a type of subconscious discrimination, so I'm not sure how you could really fight against it. if someone is choosing between two candidates for a job, I imagine that statistically the tall guy has a better shot. but that's partly because of subconscious judgments (taller person had more 'presence' or whatever) + partly because taller people are going to be more confident and confident people are going to get more jobs.

so I'm not sure what the employer could really do to fight against this discrimination - should he actively pay attention to the heights of the candidates and try and discount his own biases? even were he to do this, you'd still have the confidence gap.

iatee, Monday, 31 August 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

tehresa, Monday, 31 August 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

wait, iatee, I am totally confused by two things in there -- (a) if taller people are going to be more confident then wouldn't it kinda make sense for short men to compensate by trying to project confidence, i.e. the whole thing we're talking about, plus (b) honestly, aren't gender and racial discrimination pretty often exactly as much about "subconscious judgments" as what you're describing?

(again, I'm not saying short dudes are huge victims of systematic discrimination, but it's one of those things, like being an overweight woman or being deemed unattractive in general, where you're gonna get negatively judged in a lot of ways, and nobody even feels super-bad about it)

a) yes, I agree and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. it's probably a good thing in a lot of situations.

b) I think height discrimination is more subtle than gender and racial discrimination because people don't *actively* dislike short people? It might be comparable to the type of subconscious gender/racial discrimination done by a left-wing white male who's politically correct and really doesn't hate women and minorities?

^^ which I know is kinda just The Way It Is, and people do better by just accepting certain societal things and being serene about it and being awesome about whatever they are, etc., but it's funny how when it comes to like short guys or bald/ugly guys or whatever there's rarely acknowledgment of this stuff

I had a conversation with an ex who fell in the former category about whether it's a "thing" that some shorter girls seem to go for really tall guys. ^^^i once made a huge mistake at a party when i compared another guests skin tone to an oompa loompahs. i told her this. out loud. and then she got skin cancer within like a year.

this has sounded in my head at least once daily for the last 21 years.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Monday, 31 August 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

Que, maybe the charitable way of looking at it is that you warned her, only a little too late?

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

Que, you know Lindsay Lohan?

nabisco, Monday, 31 August 2009 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i guess? still felt like an ass. to be fair, even though i was drunk at the time that i saw it her skin tone was TERRIFYING

"xp - Nate: double bass as in the large string instrument or as in the type of pedal that lends itself to blast beats?"

Why would anyone brag about playing an orchestral instrument? No I'm talking about heavy metal thunder. Little guy, big sound.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

haha in my town double bass players are very in demand, if you know what i mean

(the large stringed instrument)

mince lice (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

I think both are awesome, btw ... the balance issues with double vs single pedal are taking me a bit to get used to.

I was just responding to something I'd asked nate before this thread reverted back to being on topic ... my adventures in double bass pedal land are not nearly as compelling as the dog pics ...

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 02:33 (sixteen years ago)

no ... the reason I took it up was because it's entirely modular, so height/length of limbs differences don't make much of a difference. My hands are too small to play guitar well.

My bf is only about 5 foot 4 or 5. he's tiny. But thats ok, cause so am I, so I can look him in the eye when I headbutt hug him.

After 4 years dating a guy who is 6 foot 6 or more, it's something of a change.
