The Dallas Stars released a statement on Sunday saying the club did not condone comments made on Tyler Seguin's Twitter account over the weekend. A message from his Twitter account, @tylerseguin92, appeared on Saturday night that read, "Only steers and queers in Texas, and I'm not a cow."

I did not but that makes 100% sense.

also I have said it elsewhere but goalies have to be the most overvalued commodity in sports right now. In what universe does dropping 2M [even for one year...] on Khabibulin make sense (vs. minor league minimum; or 1m on, like someone under 50).

Also in the 11 days I've been in Iceland, so far I have been offered 6 pints just for being a fellow hockey fan. The sport is really growing there, according to the local kids.

god knows i love the red wings (apart from the 2008-2009 playoffs i mean) but it is disturbing to hear that subsidies towards a new arena are somehow going forward despite detroit's bankruptcy

The Dance Twerking Was MADE So (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 01:33 (twelve years ago)

I don't mind government subsidies for stadium, but I do mind it not being public property afterwards. Owners holding citizens hostages like in Edmonton or Miami (in baseball) is seriously wrong. But then municipal politics is the gangrene of North America.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 01:33 (twelve years ago)

Owners holding citizens hostages like in Edmonton or Miami (in baseball) is seriously wrong.

citizens/municipalities need to stop behaving like hostages! where were the oilers or marlins going to go?

mike ilitch is worth $2.7 billion. he presumably either makes a profit or derives some substantial pleasure from owning the wings. i'm guessing neither of those apply to the vast majority of detroit citizens. if he wants a new arena, he can fucking afford to build it -- abe pollan at least did that for the arena in dc.

(i don't mean to specifically pick on the wings -- almost nothing could be more egregious than jeffrey loria and the marlins, and my penguins were in this situation very recently -- but it's current and detroit is after all in bankruptcy.)

CEDAR RAPIDS – 'Pink in the Rink' turned black Saturday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Defenseman Dylan Chanter of the Dubuque Fighting Saints had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher midway through the second period of his team's game against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders after being knocked unconscious during a fight.

Play was suspended with 11:58 left, and Cedar Rapids leading, 2-0. It has not been determined when, or if, the game will be concluded.

Chanter scrapped with Corey Petrash of the RoughRiders in the corner behind the Dubuque net. The 18-year-old from Armstrong, British Columbia, lost his balance and fell backward, hitting his helmetless head on the ice (dyed pink for a cancer promotion) and dislocating his left shoulder.

The crowd cheered until seeing Chanter begin to severely convulse. His full-body seizure lasted at least two minutes, as team trainers and the RoughRiders' team doctor rushed to him.

He remained on the ice until paramedics arrived on the scene roughly 15 minutes later.

mookieproof, Sunday, 13 October 2013 05:18 (eleven years ago)

Severe concussions sometimes trigger generalized convulsions ("full body seizures"). Doesn't usually imply a more serious permanent brain injury than otherwise -- usually no intracranial bleeding, etc. Most patients recover quickly and do not develop epilepsy, and don't need long-term treatment to prevent further seizures. Looks scary but probably no worse than him being knocked unconscious (which is still bad).

Kesler. Argh. I don't even know what to say.

At least Torts has grown on me, despite all the craziness he was allegedly going to bring with him.

Still, I want to give him a little more time.

Because he didn't play against the Rangers, I was thinking how Adam Larsson is so far a massive flop, so just for fun, I made a small list of top drafted blueliners from 1995 to 2009 to see if it was some kind of trend:

(italics for first pick overral, bold for norris)

1995: Bryan Berard
1996: Chris Phillips
1997: Eric Brewer
1998: Brad Stuart
1999: Branislav Mezei

2000: Rostislav Klesla
2001: Mike Komisarek
2002: Jay Bouwmeester
2003: Ryan Suter
2004: Cam Barker

2005: Jack Jonhson
2006: Erick Jonhson
2007: Thomas Hickey
2008: Drew Doughty
2009: Victor Hedman

Good luck Ryan Murray!

skateboarding. halfpipe. coming down from vert the board slid out from under me as i hit the flat, ankle twisted, pop!

i picked up skating again early this year when i got my son a board. next thing you know i get one for myself, figuring it can be a father-son thing. next thing you know i'm hitting bowls and ramps (i'm from the old school). i knew i'd get somewhat banged up, but frankly didn't suspect something this violent.

3 for regulation win
2 for ot/so win

late to the OT party: get rid of 4 vs 4; save a little wear n tear on the players. go straight to the shootout, seeing as it's too late to put that genie back in the bottle. get rid of points; standings by straight winning %. there's no point in giving charity points if there is a guaranteed winner and loser every single goddamn game

oh god my team has become the worst

montrealers shrieking for the coach's head
probably therrien is the problem
but the trouble is that we need a french-speaking coach
and it is not clear who would do a better job

sean gramophone, Sunday, 26 January 2014 03:08 (eleven years ago)

therrien is supposed to be a defense-first coach (or at least he was in pittsburgh) so the fact that they suddenly cannot play defense at all is pretty damning

but the habs are basically a mediocre team after subban and price (and maybe paccioretty?) so i dunno that a new coach will help, no matter what languages he speaks

mookieproof, Sunday, 26 January 2014 03:26 (eleven years ago)

disagree that habs are mediocre; think the personnel is actually good! 9 olympians or somethin. Plekanec, Pacioretty, Gallagher and Markov are great for second-tier, and happy to have Desharnais and Eller lower down the roster.

defence is dire though

sean gramophone, Sunday, 26 January 2014 03:34 (eleven years ago)

well, there are olympians and there are olympians. petr nedved is an olympian these days too (which isn't a great sign for czech hockey)

Lotta goalie shifting, but not seeing much else the past few days? A little weird.

dan m, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 22:17 (eleven years ago)

i don't understand the luongo trade from either side. vancouver has now traded away two #1 goalies in eight months. florida is not one (very expensive) goalie away from contending for anything. did they need to reach the salary floor or something?

a+ tweets from luongo and eddie lack, tho

also the process of 'teams quitting on torts' seems to be accelerating; he should probably be coaching a team of young underachievers (hi oilers!) rather than a pseudo-contender

mookieproof, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 00:28 (eleven years ago)

Trade makes no sense to me either. The only thing I can think of is the Canucks might be after Halak?

sofatruck, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 01:39 (eleven years ago)

i mean the canucks aren't one ANYTHING away from contending (crapshoot playoff #SSS aside) so if you can get something more than a bag of iced down pucks for luongo you might as well. i stand by my statement that goalies are the new overvalued sports commodity. FLA is p much fucked but lolwhatever we will never speak of panthers or luongo again.

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 03:08 (eleven years ago)

Sad to see Lu go, but everyone knew it had to happen. There is no doubt Vancouverites know he is one of the best.

Lu wanted to go home to his family. Trading him was becoming to be near impossible. A year ago the Panthers couldn't go through with it. Owner Vincent Viola changed that, but still with Canucks paying 15% (about $800k) of Lu's salary with this current trade.

Lu will be 35 this year and has an f'd up contract. No way any GM could trade him for a top 6 power forward or whatever.

Markstrom, Lack and Eriksson are young, which is a big plus for the 'Nucks. And we add size, which I think we need to continue on Torts's more physical strategy. Good timing since Santo's gone.

Sedins and Burr are probably next probably.

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Sunday, 6 April 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

It is rare for a top-10 goal scorer to have even the worst minus mark on his team. In 2006-7, Ovechkin was fourth in N.H.L. goals with 46, but his minus 19 was the worst on the Capitals. Brett Hull did it with the 1992-93 St. Louis Blues (54 goals, minus 27), as did Mike Gartner with the 1990-91 Rangers (49 goals, minus 9), but neither of them came close to having the league’s worst plus/minus.

Photo
Ovechkin was on the ice when Adam Hall, second from right, scored for the Flyers on March 2. Credit Rob Carr/Getty Images
Perhaps the nearest equivalent to Ovechkin’s current performance is that of Gil Perreault in 1970-71, his first season with the expansion Buffalo Sabres. Perreault scored 38 goals, seventh in the N.H.L. and at the time a rookie record, but his minus 39 was the worst on Buffalo and the fourth worst in the league.

So if Ovechkin maintains his sizable lead in goals and hits bottom in plus/minus (Edmonton’s Nail Yakupov entered the weekend at minus 33), he will have pulled off a remarkable statistical feat.

tbf, steve ott plays in tougher spots (ovechkin's offensive starts % is over 60%) but he's now -11 in 19 games with the west's top team ffs

rip marty brodeur; maybe if you'd played less your team would be in the playoffs

how about jaromir fuckin jagr, tho. at age 42 he played all 82 games, led the devils in scoring with 67 points (elias was second at 54), led the devils in +/- at +16 (no other devil was better than +3), got the second-most ice time of any devils forward at 19:09 (behind travis zajac, who is 13 years younger). oh, and he passed gordie howe on the all-time assists list.

jonathan toews had one more point than jagr. patrick sharp and david krejci played less than jagr. guy is amazing

I apologize for recent behavior in this thread, it's embarrassing. Major apologies to Dan m whose posts on the beer thread I learn a lot from. I've been antagonistic towards him through the years due to some immature dislike of a sports team that happened to be rivals with the team I grew up with. Very dumb for a guy my age. So dan m- i sincerely apologize for my disrespectful behavior. even though i think i conduct myself professionally and with class in real life, I sometimes blow it online (see, eg, the NFC Championship game a couple years back).

I'm just gonna relax and enjoy the playoffs. No more scott Stevens hits or Claude Lemieux arguments. I'll post on other boards but hang it up on this thread till next year.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 02:16 (eleven years ago)

No hard feelings, Bill. I've been antagonizing as well, I admit, and I apologize for that. 20 year old hockey hate dies hard! I think some of my defensiveness is due to living in Chicago for so long as an open, unabashed Wings fan. Before coming here I never realized the depth of hatred people held for Detroit. Despite the fact that I grew up about as far from Detroit as you can get and still be in Michigan, I still get abuse, friendly and not-so-friendly.

Let's all just agree that Patrick Roy is a wife-beating POS and move on.

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:58 (eleven years ago)

Honestly, I'm glad he's gone.

However, this team has a long way to go before it recovers. The core needs some changes.

I'm on the fence on letting Hank go, but those contracts are killing us.

, Thursday, 1 May 2014 16:09 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I would want to see Joe T win a cup one day, he is one of those players.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 May 2014 18:27 (eleven years ago)

one of those players? don't think i've ever seen a player get so many assists year after year, always on the top line with their team's best and then invisible in the playoffs. i like Jumbo but he's never had a solid playoffs. not once

+/- doesn't mean much, we all know this. I remember him being particularly good in 2007, 2011 and 2013.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 May 2014 19:33 (eleven years ago)

It's been a while I have seen losing a game in which they were that dominant, Bruins will win this.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 2 May 2014 03:40 (eleven years ago)

there are reasons to dislike him -- even apart from the two goals -- and it happens in other places too, but booing the black guy every time he touches the puck is nagl

vhs i'll bet i've been to more games at the forum/bell than you've been at msg

i'm not sure why you've chosen the teams that you have, but not everyone's choices have been so arbitrary

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 May 2014 04:18 (eleven years ago)

There are many reasons, and they all make sense to the seven year old kid I was (and mostly i'm stubborn). My parent immigrated from Europe and never cared for hockey, so I was pretty much ground zero in that regard. It's just that there is a constant arrogance when it comes to the Habs fandom and francophone media that I'm certain most of you would despise. Also, I have been to MSG numerous time.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 17 May 2014 15:41 (eleven years ago)

van horn, i suspect what you describe as "arrogance" is probably just the typical boosterism for any major sports team in its home town. (it can still be gross though.)

sean gramophone, Saturday, 17 May 2014 15:47 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I was there, stopped cheering after the 4th goal. I understand it's 7-1 and you are mad at your team but why would you leave 10 minutes before the end of the game?

Also, I'm so tired of the extremely loud dubstep playing all the time at the Bell Centre, I wonder how it is in other indoor arenas for other sport events.

Everyone who stayed gave a standing ovation for St Louis getting the first star, that was a very nice moment.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:40 (eleven years ago)

^I think I heard something vaguely dubsteppy at Rogers Arena once, but it's not common, I don't think.

(i actively like henrik and marty and a.v. and don't particularly hate any other ranger -- although marc staal was pretty dirty last round -- but decades of loathing cannot be dissipated so easily, and also i live here)

mookieproof, Saturday, 14 June 2014 03:59 (eleven years ago)

I dunno. (amateurist), Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:09 (eleven years ago)

don't think vhs is having fun. not even sure jimmy mod is, despite my practically guaranteeing a championship with a gift of a sweater

mookieproof, Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:12 (eleven years ago)

Has any cup-winner ever taken 3 in OT, I wonder?

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:24 (eleven years ago)

dat's a wrap. the blaring horn sounds make a nice drone. we need more (sonic) drones on TV.

I dunno. (amateurist), Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:27 (eleven years ago)

I think every King is gonna give St. Louis a hug ;_;

Hockey is best

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)

egregious misuse of the word "benefactor" just now

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:33 (eleven years ago)

logical. great season overall. proud of my rangers. etc.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:37 (eleven years ago)

Careful Kopitar! He almost DROPPED IT two years ago

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:40 (eleven years ago)

when was the last time a team who didn't have a recent top 2 draft pick won the cup, the red wings in 08?

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:44 (eleven years ago)

down 3-0 in the first round

three game 7s, all on the road iirc

that is something

mookieproof, Saturday, 14 June 2014 04:54 (eleven years ago)

And only one reg time victory in the final. crazy

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Saturday, 14 June 2014 05:16 (eleven years ago)

Grats Kings, worthy champs imo

dan m, Saturday, 14 June 2014 19:48 (eleven years ago)

Happy with this result as a former New Jersey resident. Hate the Rangers.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Saturday, 14 June 2014 20:22 (eleven years ago)

Waiting for the first idiotic signing/the draft/when I come back from FLA to make the new thred. Accepting submissions for new titles (character restrictions apply)

Opening salvo:

'Ryan Miller: the carpetbagging years: your etc'

Bringing the mosh (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

dan m, Monday, 23 June 2014 19:09 (eleven years ago)

mookieproof, Monday, 23 June 2014 19:18 (eleven years ago)

Hartnell to CBJ for Umberger

sofatruck, Monday, 23 June 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I feel like forsberg is barely eligible like he was on a make-good nri shit as late as two seasons ago

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 June 2014 00:33 (eleven years ago)

yeah what do you think of that deal?

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 28 June 2014 01:36 (eleven years ago)

I'm always glad when a blueliner is drafted #1

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 28 June 2014 01:37 (eleven years ago)

i'm not really sorry to see neal go -- he won't put up those numbers without malkin and was evidently kind of a dick -- but they got no picks and no salary relief. tbf, i know absolutely nothing about the guys they got back, but i do wish i'd heard of them.

the whole gm/coaching search was awful and half-assed. the coach, who is saying all the right things and might still be great, was an obvious third (at least) choice who was compelled to take rick tocchet on his staff. the gm is an obvious caretaker with like half a dozen assistant gms fighting for priority.

i've heard that bill guerin (one of the agms) is super bright and beloved in the organization, but grooming multiple successors is just a recipe for further chaos.

crosby + malkin, tho. it shouldn't be this hard

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 June 2014 01:57 (eleven years ago)

apparently garth snow won the draft with ho-sang

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 June 2014 02:18 (eleven years ago)

I have waited for this day:

JAMES NEAL IS THE PROBLEM. JAMES NEAL IS THE SOLUTION: THE NHL 2014-2015 THREAD (INCLUDING THE ECSTASY OF RYAN MILLER, LOS ANGELES HANGOVER AND OFFSEASON SHENANIGANS. HOCKEY IS THE BEST)
